cancer didn't
stand a chance.
A new treatment, developed at the Ben Towne Center for Childhood Cancer
Research, is producing stunning results by reprogramming a child’s immune
system to destroy cancer cells. Welcome to Strong Against Cancer: A team of
doctors, nurses, researchers, hospitals, companies and people like you—captained
by Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. We have the science and the results.
Now we need the resources to bring this life-saving treatment to more children.

You know the story. That
curmudgeon, the Grinch, is a
holiday hater and he attempts
to ruin Christmas for the Whos.
Sounds like a dour story, but
at the heart there are lessons
on giving, learning to live with
less, and forgiveness. It’s the
giving lesson that teaches us
the importance of sharing the
resources we have with others.

You might not think of Seattle Theatre Group as an organization with an
interest in the healing arts, but our Dance for Parkinson’s® program is exactly
that. This is a place where we can contribute the resources we have in order
for those with a potentially debilitating disorder to find comfort through dance.
Originated by the Mark Morris Dance Group, Dance for PD® blends the skill of
professional dancers who train their minds and bodies to execute difficult movement with confidence, power and grace, and empowers people with Parkinson’s
to do the same. Along with professionally trained dancers, balance, sequencing,
rhythm and aesthetic awareness is useful to persons with Parkinson’s.
STG offers Dance for PD® classes in Seattle, Kirkland, Des Moines, and
Issaquah. The program is one way STG is able to give to those in need in
a way that is enjoyable, healing, and refreshing. Look for more information
on this and other STG programs during the year.
As we close one year and prepare for the arrival of a new one, our calendar
is filled with another season of entertaining and diverse arts. The year kicks
off with the return of Dame Edna, to say “farewell” once more, at The Moore
January 15-18th. Join us for a night of fun and lively mischief.
Stay up to date on shows and special offers, by signing up for our E-News.
And be sure to check out STGtv for exclusive artist interviews and behind the
scenes coverage. You can also learn more about programs like Dance for PD®
at www.stgpresents.org.
Thanks for all of your ongoing support!

hit show Plain and Fancy as well as Redhead,
for which he won the Tony in 1959. His film
and TV career started when he was in his
late 50s with the role of Professor Shorofsky
in the movie Fame and the “Fame” TV
series, and continued with many small roles
in movies such as Space Jam and The Story
of Us. Born in 1920 in Berlin, he escaped
the Nazis via music scholarships in Rome
and Cincinnati and settled in NY. The
music from The Grinch is his most enduring
achievement.

The Piano Guys
COME VISIT!
Open House
The Paramount Theatre
December 17th and 18th, 2014
Saturday,
DEC 6 at 1pm
Sometimes the key
to success is just
being in the right
place at the right time,
and no one could tell that story better than
Jon Schmidt, Steven Sharp Nelson, Paul
Anderson, and Al van der Beek, also known
as the Piano Guys. One day in 2010, Schmidt
walked into Anderson’s piano store (named
“The Piano Guys”) and upon striking up
a conversation, the two decided to make a
commercial for the store featuring Schmidt’s
music. That commercial soon became the
first in a series of collaborative videos also
featuring cellist Steven Sharp Nelson and
producer Al van der Beek. Those early videos
received millions of views, and not long after,
they were touring outside of their native
Utah, playing shows to captivated audiences
while still regularly making videos.
The group’s penchant for mixing up
classical music with popular songs and
soundtracks is now one of their trademark
characteristics. Some of their most
memorable projects include a mash-up of
the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and
Michael Jackson, a medley of John Williams’
Star Wars soundtracks, and Beethoven’s 5th
Symphony with OneRepublic’s “Secrets”.
They’ve filmed performances all the way
from the top of Red Stone Mountain in their
hometown of St. George, Utah to the Great
Wall of China.
The self-described “ordinary guys” are
now taking their classically-influenced
performances across the world, with tours in
Germany and England on the horizon. This
fall they’ll be taking songs from their new
album, Wonders, to theatres across North
America, including a two-night stand at the
Paramount this December. Still beaming
throughout every show, it’s clear that these
four “guys” are the same ones that met in the
piano store that fateful day, even if they’re
famous far outside of Southern Utah.

PARAMOUNT AND MOORE
SEASON PARTNERS
From Youtube to Stardom
The Moore Theatre | March 14th, 2015
In 2011, a video of two cellists playing a
classical cover of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth
Criminal” went viral around the world, and
within the span of just three short years, Luka
Sulic and Stjepan Hauser’s music as 2Cellos
has crossed countless musical and national
borders. The Croatian duo was one of the first
classical groups to truly capitalize on using
the Internet as a way to broadcast their music
to audiences who may not be familiar with
classical music. As they continued to put out
videos of their thrilling interpretations of
popular music, their profile grew far beyond
the confines of the internet.
Honored graduates from the Royal
Academy of Music in London and the Royal
Northern College of Music in Manchester,
respectively, Sulic and Hauser’s partnership
has been admired from day one, not in the
least by Sir Elton John, who invited them
to open for him on a worldwide tour. A
subsequent appearance reprising their cover
of “Smooth Criminal” on the hit television
series Glee and a performance on the CCTV
New Year’s Gala viewed by more than one
billion people continued the young musicians’
upward trajectory, which resulted in sold-out
shows in North America, Europe and Japan.
Their second album, IN2ITION, was
released in 2013 and sees returning

contributions from some of their advocates,
including Glee’s Naya Rivera, virtuoso
guitarist Steve Vai, world-class pianist Lang
Lang, and a rare recorded collaboration
with Sir Elton John. Since IN2ITION’s
release, the duo have toured even more
extensively around the world, stunning
audiences with the skill and speed that has
captivated hearts from Vienna to New York
City. Just this past October, the duo’s cover
of Iron Maiden’s “The Trooper” was widely
acclaimed, and by the time 2Cellos bring
their riveting show to the Moore Theatre in
March, they’re sure to have added another
brilliant rendition of a non-classical song to
their already impressive oeuvre.

The Moore Theatre
February 5th – 8th, 2015
Mark your calendars
because this February,
Seattle Theatre Group
is the place for you.
Starting off with a bang (and a bit
of bending) is Circus Oz - the internationally acclaimed Australian circus
troupe. Although they sowed and
welded their first tent together with
their own hands in 1978, the vibrant,
explosive performances from the Melbourne collective now occur in much larger, alreadyconstructed venues across the world. As one of the first modern circus troupes to incorporate
rock and roll, theatre, and satire into their act – Circus Oz continues to thrive with new shows
and performers collaborating to create one of the Australian troupe’s most thrilling eras yet.
After playing sold-out shows all across Australia, Circus Oz will bring their brand new show,
“But Wait…There’s More,” to Seattle this February 5-8th as the first stop on their month-long
North American jaunt. Inspired by an abandoned theatre, the show features new spins on some
of Circus Oz’ trademark aspects including breathtaking acrobatics, lightning-fast juggling, and
other incredible feats of athleticism and wit. Accompanying the performers are fantastical, visual
displays of fire, smoke, strobes and original music making “But Wait...There’s More” a performance that audiences of all ages can enjoy from beginning to end.
Not even a meteor could crash this roar of fun!

Enjoy an afternoon
of family fun at the
Neptune Theatre
January 31st, 2015
Although he’s been a premier
children’s entertainer for four decades,
Raffi’s career happened somewhat
by accident. Born in Egypt and an
immigrant to Canada while still a child,
Raffi Cavoukian was a musician playing
folk music when his mother-in-law
noted his talent for connecting with
children and invited him to sing in her
nursery school classroom. Realizing
his talent for writing children’s music
and surprised by the lack of children’s
music with production value, Raffi soon
shifted his focus towards, to quote his
debut album, “Singable Songs for the
Very Young.”
As his success grew, Raffi dedicated himself to using his music as an
educational and edifying tool for children, incorporating positive messages into his songs and
refusing to place his music on television or commercials due to a resolute belief that children
should not watch significant amounts of television. In 1988, Raffi was inspired to become
an environmental activist after viewing a presentation on the decline in the beluga whale
population. In 1997, he released a book detailing his holistic philosophy towards raising youth,
titled Child Honouring.
Today, the 66-year old spends the majority of his time continuing to advocate for ecological
sustainability and, more recently, an end to online bullying. His concert tours are now relatively
sporadic, meaning that his January appearance at the Neptune Theatre is going to be a rare treat
for both children and their parents, who grew up listening to “Baby Beluga,” “Bananaphone,”
and “Down By The Bay.”

SEATTLE THEATRE GROUP
RELEASES 2013 ANNUAL REPORT
The 2013-2014 season was Seattle
Theatre Group’s most successful yet,
not only in terms of the quality of our
productions, but also in the amount of
resources given back to the region of
Seattle. In our work at the historic
Paramount, Moore, and Neptune theatres
and the many other venues we partner
with, we strive to engage the Northwest
region in ways that encourage the
creation and appreciation of art.
We strongly believe that art and culture
are not luxuries; rather, they are vital to
our existence. They are a source of mental, emotional, and spiritual sustenance,
which is why, with your support, Seattle
Theatre Group plays an indispensable
role in cultivating and presenting this
vital art to our community.
As part of Seattle Theatre Group’s
ongoing educational initiative, we
collaborated with 843 young artists and
produced 218 free events for students,
including master classes, workshops,
rehearsals and discussions. Through our
theatre access programs, a total value
of $238,232 in subsidized tickets was
donated to young artists, community
organizations, schools and seniors.
Over the next several months,
we will be sharing profiles online at
stgpresents.org/stories that highlight the
three main goals of our work: delivering
world-class performances, providing arts
education and access, and preserving
Seattle’s historic venues. As we present these stories we invite you to share
memorable art and culture experiences
you’ve had with STG using the hashtag
#MyVitalArt.
