CHURCH OF DIVES IN MISERICORDIAE
_richard meier
Adresse: via francesco tovaglieri, 00155 roma
The proportinal structure of both the church and the precinct is
predicated on a displaced square and four circles. The three
shells that determine the primary gastalt of the church are based
on three circles of equal radius and refer discreetly to the Holy
Trinity.
The perceptual volume of the church is directly influenced by zenithal light on the east-west axis; glazed skylights between the
shells create changing patterns of light and shadow. According to
the season, the weather, and the time of day, light is graduated
across the inner surface of the shells, giving the chapel and the
baptisery a particularly vivacious yet ephemeral character. The
norditalia > roma > church of dives in misericordiae > 2003 > richard meier
effect is further enchanced by the light entering trough translucent glass between the shells and the narrow band of clear glass
around the perimeter of the church. Of particular note are the
large curved walls on the south perimeter of the church. These
three walls vary in height and are, in effect, segments of a sphere.
Each shell is built of pre-cast concrete segments, post-tensioned
in situ; by virtue of the curvature in plan, each is independently
supported. Wind load resistance is developed through a vertical
cantiever effect acting across the full depth of the curved section.

PALAZZO DELLA CIVILTÁ ROMANA
_marcello piacentini
Adresse: piazza giovanni agnelli, 10, 00144 roma
The Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, also known as the Palazzo
della Civiltà del Lavoro or simply the Colosseo Quadrato (Square
Colosseum), is an icon of Fascist architecture. It lies in the district of Rome known as the Esposizione Universale Roma (also
known as ‘E.42’ and ‘EUR’). It is particularly symbolic of this district, exemplifying its monumentality.
The Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana was constructed as part of the
program of the Esposizione Universale Roma, a large business
center and suburban complex, initiated in 1935 by Benito Mussolini for the planned 1942 world exhibition and as a symbol of fascism for the world. The Palazzo was designed by the architects
Giovanni Guerrini, Ernesto Bruno La Padula and Mario Romano
and constructed between 1938 and 1943. It was inaugurated on
30 November 1940 as the centerpiece of the Esposizione and
continues to be its most iconic building. The structure is also considered one of the most representative examples of Fascist architecture at the EUR.
The EUR provides a large-scale image of how urban Italy might
have looked if the fascist regime had not fallen during the war—
large, symmetrical streets and austere buildings of limestone,
tuff and marble, in either stile Littorio, inspired by ancient Roman
architecture, or Rationalism. Its architectural style is often called
simplified neoclassicism. Marcello Piacentini, the coordinator of
the commission for E42, based it on the Italian Rationalism of
Pagano, Libera, and Michelucci.
norditalia > roma > palazzo della civiltá romana > 1938 > marcello piacentini
The design of the “Square Colosseum” was inspired more to celebrate the Colosseum, and the structure was intended by Benito
Mussolini as a celebration of the older Roman landmark. Similar
to the Colosseum, the palace has a series of superimposed loggias, shown on the façade as six rows of nine arches each. These
numbers are said to be an allusion to the name of the Fascist
dictator: “Benito” having six letters and “Mussolini,” nine.

NUOVO PALAZZO CONGRESSI ITALIA
_massimiliano fuksas
Adresse: piazza john fitzgerald kennedy, 1, 00144 Roma
The new Convention Center will be a work of extraordinary artistic value, characterized by innovative logistics solutions and a
choice of technologically advanced materials in the construction
industry.
The building is being built in a strategic area of the historic district
of the eur, a quadrant bounded by the Via Cristoforo Colombo,
Viale Europa, Viale Asia and Viale Shakespeare, fully inserted
in the urban environs, an area of about 27 000 square meters
owned by EUR SpA.
The externally visible part of the new Convention Center will
be the result of the interaction of three elements: the theca, the
“cloud” and the hotel. The “cloud” is, without doubt, the characteristic architectural element of the project: the structure, with an extraordinary visual effect, will be made of an innovative membrane
(fiberglass and silicone can guarantee the highest level of fire
safety) and ‘floats’ in a “showcase” of steel and glass 40 meters
high, 70m wide and 175 long.
The theca-cloud system was functionally designed to cover the
exhibition space of the forum, but also as a horizontal connection
of the various meeting spaces and connective midpoint between
the basement and the “Cloud”.
The design of the New Convention Center is distinguished by its
eco-friendly approach: a set of choices to reduce energy consumption by using energy produced through renewable sources.

BIBLIOTECA LATERANENSE
_king roselli architetti
Adresse: largo de’ ginnasi, 2, 00186 roma
On commissioning the project for the new library extension to the
Pontificial Lateran University the chancellor Mons. Rino Fisichella
was quite clear in his main objective: to bring the activity of reading and the consultation of books as the central occupation of the
university.
The library’s presence can be perceived from the university;
through a series of viewing cones created by joining the window
reveals (that once gave on to the exterior) to apertures closed
with fire glass in the book stacks. It is entered from the first floor
corridor of the main building down a flight of basalt stairs under
the first level of the book stacks into a spacious foyer. This is
where the locker room, computer indexes-laid on an articulated
table, card index, professors reading room and librarians posting
are set.
The library is arranged so that for every two floors of book stacks
one sloping ramp, “U” shaped in plan, connects them. The book
stacks are as low as possible to avoid the use of ladders to reach
the highest shelves and, given the thin floor slab, are made look
like a set of bookshelves themselves. They are connected vertically by a staircase set between the containing wall and an interior façade of bookshelves facing the reading ramps dedicated
to publications, to form in effect a book tower. The slope of the
ramps is determined by joining the regularly spaced floors of the
book stacks to the irregular cuts in the façade which creates the
reality (not simply the effect) of volumes floating in light.

MACRO MUSEUM
_odile decq architect
Adresse: via reggio emilia 54, 00198 roma
Paris-based architect and urbanist Odile Decq was commissioned
with the redevelopment and expansion of the Roman Museum of
Contemporary Art in 2001 by Rome City Council.
The main site of the museum was already the product of the restoration and redevelopment of the old Peroni brewery, an important industrial building from the beginning of the 20th century. The
French architect was faced with the complex challenge to introduce a Contemporary Art Gallery in an old mixed industrial building. Decq welcomed the opportunity to transgress more conventional attitudes towards the integration into a historical context:
the result is a convergence of ramps, illuminated staircases, a

bamboo garden, roof terraces and transparent spaces with multiple cross-flows of visitors moving through the building. Perspectives are tangential, allowing chaining and sequential points of
view. Space is not centred and static but in constant tension, expressing the sense of a dynamic equilibrium. The spacious foyer
at the entrance will lead to a large exhibition hall, to the Art Café’
and bookshop. The central volume of running water over the centre of the foyer intends to create a sensation of freshness.
The red « Z » running through the courtyard, the foyer, the garden, the restaurant and the roof is a projection screen.

NEW TIBURTINA TRAIN STATION
_abdr
Adresse: piazzale della stazione tiburtina, 00162 roma
The renovation of Tiburtina station in eastern Rome has been
talked about since 1984 and alas works have begun. The operation is complex as it involves resizing the station, regenerating
the surrounding areas and adding a stretch of road to improve
the local traffic.
The new design is a bridge over the existing spinal chord of the
rail tracks. It aspires to be a station at international level and a
meeting point at neighbourhood level. It will be a bridge but also
an urban boulevard that will reconnect two areas that had long
been separated by the tracks: the residential Nomentano and the
more rundown Pietralata.
norditalia > roma > new tiburtina train station > 2011 > abdr
The Bridge-Station is designed with flexibility of space in mind:
inside, suspended multi purpose volumes have been created and
vertical support structures have been eliminated to help reduce
the impact of vibrations coming from the trains whizzing past below. Similar to the tongue of a bell, thanks to gravity each suspended space will soften the vibrations transmitted by the container.

ARA PACIS MUSEUM
_richard meier
Adresse: lungotevere in augusta, 00100 roma
The Ara Pacis consists of a rectangular enclosure containing the
true altar. The most significant scene in the decoration is the one
featuring Augustus, Agrippa, Julius and Tiberius.
One of the walls bears bronze letters stating Augustus’ testament,
known to historians as “Res Gestae”. Sealing the Ara in a marble
case designed by architect Vittorio Ballio Morpurgo in 1938 failed
to save it from decay - hence the decision to put it in a museum.
Richard Meier’s project preserves the Ara Pacis Museum largely unaltered, surrounding it in a permeable, transparent case.
Whether or not one agrees with the principle of creating this contemporary ‘skin’ around the monument, the attraction of Richard
Meier’s project lies in its lightness and alternation of open and
closed areas while remaining “permeable”.
Glass and travertine are the key materials in this highly linear
building right in the historical centre of Rome, on the western side
of Piazza Augusto Imperatore, parallel to the Tiber.
The structure, which measures about 4,200 m2, is divided into
three functional areas (the museum, multimedia halls and offices)
on several levels, adapting to the morphology of the site.
A large staircase takes visitors to a hall lit up from the side and
from above and then to a dark gallery set up as a didactic museum route with panels, models and portraits. This takes visitors
to the case in which the Ara stands with the Res Gestae tablets.
norditalia > roma > ara pacis museum > 2006 > richard meier
In the central pavilion, the Ara Pacis is flooded with light from the
skylights and filtering glass during the day. This solution required
assembly of more than 1500 m2 of tempered glass plates measuring up to three by five metres, ensuring that the pavilion does
not feel enclosed and guaranteeing maximum visibility.Travertine
marks the entire perimeter of the building and the two terraces,
one of which will be planted with a garden.
The museum is completed by a 150 seat conference room, a
museum-shop and an underground office area.

AUDITORIUM PARCO DELLA MUSICA
_renzo piano
Adresse: viale pietro de coubertin, 00196 roma
Auditorium Parco della Musica is a large multi-functional public
music complex in Rome, Italy. The complex is situated in the
north of the city, in the area where the 1960 Summer Olympic
Games were held.
Parco della Musica was designed by Italian architect Renzo
Piano. Three large concert halls (Sala Petrassi, in memory of
Goffredo Petrassi, about 700 seats; Sala Sinopoli, in memory of
Giuseppe Sinopoli, about 1200 seats; Sala Santa Cecilia, about
2800 seats) are structurally separated to ensure soundproofing,
though joined at the base by a continuous lobby. A fourth “concert
hall”, called Cavea, is the open air theater recalling ancient Greek
and Roman theaters. The fan-shaped layout is formed around the

central piazza. Structures have several nicknames such as blobs,
beetles, scarabs, turtles, insect carapaces, computer mice.
During construction, excavations uncovered the foundations of a
villa and oil press dating from sixth century BC. Renzo Piano redesigned the facility to accommodate the archaeological remains
and included a small museum to house the artifacts that were
discovered. Such changes delayed the project by a year.
The Parco della Musica was formally inaugurated on 21 December 2002; in few years it became the world’s most visited music
facility with over one million spectators in one year.

PALAZZETTO DELLO SPORT
_pier luigi nervi
Adresse: piazza apollodoro, 00196 roma
Built for the 1960 Olympics, the palazzetto is a modest sports
stadium in an innovative concrete dome. Designed by Pier Luigi Nervi it hosted boxing among other sports during the Olympic Games. The innovative dome is made of ribbed reinforced
concrete. The lower half of the dome has continuous ribbon of
window the whole way around the circular stadium, beneath the
elegantly ribbed, white-painted concrete ceiling. A wonderful
space. Pier Luigi Nervi was educated and practised as a “building
engineer” in Italy. After 1932, his aesthetically pleasing designs
norditalia > roma > palazzetto dello sport > 1957 > pier luigi nervi
were used for major projects. This was due to the booming number of construction projects at the time which used concrete and
steel in Europe and the architecture aspect took a step back to
the potential of engineering. Nervi successfully made reinforced
concrete the main structural material of the day.

PONTE DELLA MUSICA PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE
_buro happold & powell-william architects
Adresse: viale pietro de coubertin, 00196 roma
Construction of Ponte della Musica, a new dual purpose pedestrian and public transport bridge crossing the substantial River
Tiber in Rome, is due to begin early in 2008 and will take 18
months to complete. This major crossing will join the banks of
this substantial river between the Foro Italico and the area of
Flaminio. The bridge is a key part of the Rome city plan which
involves the development of a new east-west axis along the Via
Guido Reni on the east bank of the Tiber. It will connect the various cultural and sporting facilities of the Flaminio district with the
Olympic stadium and other sports facilities on the west bank in
Monte Mario. The scheme consists of two inclined steel arches
supporting a steel deck.
norditalia > roma > ponte della musica pedestrian bridge > 2010 > buro happold & powell-william architects
The arch springings, designed in concrete, incorporate staircases
providing secondary access from the lower river banks. Primarily,
the bridge has been designed for pedestrians but it also allows
for future conversion that will accommodate vehicular and tram
loading.
Buro Happold’s scheme was developed in collaboration with
Powell-Williams Architects and emerged as the winner of an
international design competition organised by the Comune di
Roma. Once finished, this contemporary new crossing will measure approximately 200m long with a clear span of around 150m.

Total surface area 225.000 m2, frequented by approximately
480,000 persons per day, over 150 million per year. The station is
located in piazza dei Cinquecento, in the heart of the city.
Even beyond these figures, Roma Termini has come to play a
primary role in the urban, regional, national and international
transport system. Taking as its starting point the consideration
that stations are privileged places of passage, fundamentally important resources for cities in constant expansion and evolution,
the Grandi Stazioni project was developed to transform Italy’s 13
most important stations into comfortable, secure and assessible

Lab is intended to be an iconic building expressing Italcementi’s
position of leadership and commitment to research and innovation in the use of concrete and reflecting its celebrated reputation
for technical expertise. The structure is a benchmark in sustainable design, seeking to attain the first LEED platinum accreditation in Europe.
The new building reinforces the boundaties of the triangular site
and incorporates a program of technical and administrative spaces into two wings. Comprising two levels above grade and two
basement levels including parking, the V-shaped configuration
houses separate laboratory and administrative wings surrounding a central courtyard, which features a garden and provides service and underground parking access. Below-grade courtyards at
the perimeter provide natural light to basement-level laboratory
spaces and fresh air for the mechanical spaces and the garage.
At the northeast corner of the building, which is also the terminating corner of the scientific park, a large covered public plaza
forms the main entrance leading to a two-story skylit atrium. The
central atrium houses public reception as well as security control
and provides circulation space for both of the structure’s wings

LIBRARY OF ARCHEA
_archea associati
A building erected in 1897, intended as a primary school, that
has been used for many purposes over the years, first becoming town hall, then kindergarten and finally consulting room. The
request of the municipality was to solve the contingent state of
abandon, turning the building into a library, to provide the town
with a facility dedicated to education and information of the
residents.
The strategic position in relation to the urban tissue, the architectural character of the original structure, closed on three sides,
and the need for new spaces oriented the project towards the
addition of a new wing in the form of a new construction that
closes the only open side, that once faced a courtyard.
norditalia > bergemo > library > 2007 > archea associati
The new building, connected via the basement, is separated
from the existing structure on all sides, thus underscoring a difference that, in spite of the communicating plan, bears witness
to a constructive and formal choice that establishes a dialectic
contrast with the historical character of the original building;
completely transparent, it is characterized by its surface, made
of terracotta elements measuring 40x40 centimeters, glazed in
carmine red, supported by a structure made from coupled steel
profiles. This building technique has made it possible to screen
and filter the sunlight. The choice of earthenware has been suggested precisely by the typical characteristics of the material, its
performance as a screen protecting from light and its link to traditional building methods, but also by the contemporary image
created thanks to the assembly technique and its durability.

close to the 17th century church of San Alessandro Martire in
the suburb of Paderno-Seriate south of Bergamo.
The church with the squared ground floor is the center of the
whole project site with a side length of 25 meters and a height
of 23 meters. The bearing structure is in reinforced concrete, the
facades are clad in natural stone slabs of Stone di Verona (split
slabs),while the interior walls are covered with panels of gilded

wood (similar to the technique of gilded frames). The interior
space offers itself as a one and only volume shaped by the
lateral wall, light flows in down along the walls from the four roof
skylights. The same Verona stone characterizing the buildings
exterior is also used, polished, in the interior as a continuity of
the whole flooring shaping the plinth of the walls and the liturgy
furniture. A stone clad twin apse completes the church space
and offers a sculptural work with a crucifixion scene realised
within the stone size of the cladding by the Italian artist Giuliano
Vangi.

BIBLIOTECA
& AUDITORIUM BY CURNO
_ archea associati
Adresse: Strada Statale del Sempione, 28, 20017 Milano
he site for the building of a new public library and a small auditorium with 250 seats has been found inside an existing school
campus. The location has suggested the idea of a project centred
on the continuity of the surrounding public area.
The building, conceived as a kind of open book, is therefore
characterized by a sloping roof which is terraced to form stands,
and which may be used for open-air events, to extend the public
square in front to the roof of the building.
The plan distinguishes the activities which pivot on the rectangular hall of the auditorium from the areas of the library, whose
perimeter consists of a longitudinal outline characterized by the
jagged geometry of the external facade.
The line of demarcation and communication between the two areas takes the form of a new urban itinerary, a triple-height void
paced horizontally by a system of split levels which in their turn
serve as communication paths, and vertically by a succession
of uprights which structure the entire wall as container case of
books.
The materials, which have been reduced to the essentiality of an
untreated concrete mixed with colour, have made it possible to
mould the vertical surfaces as the pages of a conceptual book,
engraved here and there with letters.

Adresse: Assago, Milano
The Milanofiori Housing Complex in Milan is a modern apartment
development that utilizes an innovative double garden system to
buffer the apartments against the elements. Designed by Open
Building Research (OBR), the project forms a C-shape as it wraps
around a public park and it is designed to optimize solar passive
design. Each apartment features an indoor-outdoor garden set
behind double-glazed glass so that residents can enjoy a bit of
nature whether it’s summer or winter
The 107-apartment complex is part of a much greater master plan
for the Milanofiori area designed by Erick van Egeraat. OBR was
in charge of designing the complex, which has both a public and

a private facade. The exterior of the curved building is more urban
and it creates a sense of belonging with white wooden screens.
These shade screens can be moved along the balcony so each
resident can control the amount and quality of light reaching into
their home.

spanning 106 acres on the old fairgrounds of this historic city.
The scheme of Fiera Milano incorporates residential and office
development, retail space and a museum all built around a central park. In 2004 Studio Daniel Libeskind along with Zaha Hadid
Architects, and Arata Isozaki Associates won the commission
for the development of the site. In addition to leading the master
plan, SDL is designing the contemporary art museum, the central
office tower, a residential tower (the Park Tower), and the first
housing parcel which is currently under construction.

Given the size of the lot we decided to aspire to re-interpret the
complexity of the city through most designers who, at odds with
each other, bring the power of buildings with different shapes and
materials. In any street in Milan are still buildings from different
eras and with different architectural features. Hence the liveliness
of a city, in the dynamic tension between the works of later periods in an archipelago of images and colors. This was our ambition, choosing to work in groups. In our area we wanted to check
the design through a mathematical system: the Penrose pattern.
Designed by a British mathematician, it allows you to create
complex forms of diamond always the same, but put together
norditalia > milano > housing complex > under construction > arata isozaki
so infinitely different ways thanks to mathematical variables.
The size of the lines are always the same and then just decide a
convenient measure to apply to the types everywhere and thus
check the result size and distribution. On this basis, we applied
the volume and types of residential accommodation for offices
like pattern of vertical extrusions. The residences are spread out
around an interior garden with cherry trees, which continues the
theme of the park in the residences, and grow in height going
towards the skyscraper. In the design of the facades we reported
the mathematics of random pattern, alternating rhythmically terraces, stone, glass and blinds in long vertical stripes.

THE
MACIACHINI CENTRE
_ sauerbruch e hutton
Adresse: via benigno crespi, 20159 milano
The Maciachini Centre is a brown-field regeneration project of a
former industrial site once occupied by pharmaceutics manufacturer, Carlo Erba, in the north of Milan.
The new business park will be a multi-purpose tertiary centre of
some 100,000 sq m with offices, shops, restaurants, fitness and
sports facilities, and cultural activities including a museum-theatre complex. The daily footfall in the Centre is forecast at around
4,000.
The design includes green spaces, squares with fountains, bicycle paths and accessibility from all sides.
The three large volumes of this complex follow the main axis of
the site. They are positioned to allow easy accessibility to the
site’s internal areas while creating an acoustic barrier blocking
out the noise of traffic from roads bordering the site perimeter.
Two of the buildings are linked by a glazed atrium space.
Architecturally the three volumes are striking for the horizontal
and vertical accents afforded by the 1 ½ metre high façade cladding modules in coloured screen-printed glass with operable sunshading elements on an aluminium frame. This ensemble forms
the outer envelopes of all three buildings. The inner layers are
made up of double glazing with operable windows.
The mosaic on the exterior façades to the north (overlooking the
park), west (Via Imbo nati) and south (Via Bracco) comprises thirty different shades going from red to pink. On the inward facing
norditalia > milano > the maciachini centre > 2010 > sauerbruch e hutton
façades, shades moving from green to blue reflect the colours of
the immediate surrounds.
The elevations are further differentiated by façade modules arranged like a series of same-height but varying sized pixels that
lend a dynamic to the sequence of volumes.
A key objective for the new-build facilities is the reduction of both
energy requirements and harmful emissions while at the same
time guaranteeing user comfort.

THE SOLE 24 ORE HEADQUARTERS
_renzo piano
Adresse: via monte rosa, 91, 20100 milano
When this building was designed the pre-existing structures were
kept in mind: a portion of the former factory has been demolished,
but the reinforced concrete skeleton and the foundation grid have
been maintained. Two more floors formed by light steel structures
have been added and foundations have been strengthened. The
southwest wing and the inner part of the block, entirely occupied
by warehouses, have been knocked down.
The building consists of two side units and one central unit laid out
around an urban park with different types of trees. The buildings
are divided with transparent partitions, true windows that make
the town and the internal garden inter-communicating. Each one

of the side units is divided into three parts, with functional nodes
with elevators, staircases, lobbies and recreational areas, with

FAIR CENTRE
_massimiliano fuksas
Adresse: strada statale del sempione, 28, 20017 milano
The New Trade Fair is not only a big project for the Milan region
- its dimensions make it one of the biggest buildings in Europe.
Massimiliano Fuksas conceived the site on the outskirts of the
city as a new landscape with its own geography. The project is
structured by a central axis that connects the service centres, offices and the exhibition halls.
The whole complex is covered by a vast roof - an undulating lightweight structure, with a surface area exceeding 46.000 square
metres, over 1300 metres long and approximately 32 metres
wide. Made up of a reticular rhomboidal mesh structure in pre-
norditalia > milano,rho > fair centre > 2005 > massimiliano fuksas
finished steel profiles, it is connected via spherical nodes and
covered with laminated glass attached via plates to the profiles
below. It is supported by 183 steel columns 500 mm. in diameter which branch into smaller supporting arms above 12 metres.
Fuksas derived the form from constant altimetric variations as
found in the natural landscape in the form of ‘craters’, ‘waves’
and ‘dunes’.

MALPENSA AIRPORT
_atelier manferdini
Adresse: milano airport
The project involved the replacement of the connecting tunnel
between the Express Train Station and the Terminal 1 of the Milan Airport, all in preparation for the World Expo in 2015. The
designed segment comprises a covered area that will serve as
an exhibition space as well as a pedestrian trajectory, connecting the sides with roof gardens. The part of the roof overhang on
the west side is clearly visible from the street lanes that flank the
underlying construction of the new Hotel Malpensa.
The roof is supported by a metal frame to ensure lightness and
limit the weight, and avoid compromising the existing structure of
the parking lot below. The north side of the structure is adjacent to
the hard deck of Terminal-1, which connects the foot to impart the
norditalia > milano > malpensa airport > under construction > atelier manferdini
necessary lateral stability against wind and seismic loads.
The cover is made of a modular system of metal bent brush anodized in 3 shades (gold, natural and mirrored). The geometry
of folded panels and reflective surfaces of the metal create rich
effects in light and color that change with the angle of the light
source and with the observer’s viewing angle, giving dynamism
and lightness to the new port of Milan. During daylight hours,
the geometry of the modular system and its openings are less
frequent at the ends of the cover and act as tree branches by creating a play of light and shade. During the night, the perforations
in the cover spread interior lighting onto the pedestrian crossing.
