Piraeus serves about 20 million passengers a year. Also, at the end of the line, in Piraeus there is a free shuttle bus that transports passengers to the gate their ferry departs from. LAVRIO & INTERVIEWS THEMES HISTORY // THE GUARDS OF ATHENS SYMBOLS OF HELLENISM, STEADFAST AND UPRIGHT, ARE THE EMBLEMATIC FIGURES OF A STORY 2.800 YEARS OLD. REPORTAGE: YIANNIS FOSKOLOS PHOTO: KOSTAS ΚΑPARELIOTIS 51 HISTORY // 52 53 HISTORY // THE TSAROUHI IS WORN LAST. EACH PAIR WEIGHS THREE KILOS. From the time of Homer 2.800 years ago the Evzone was the well belted fighter because of the lightly armed belt he wore which was a sign of an elite group of soldiers. Quite a few centuries later, during the Turkish occupation (1453 - 1821), the skirt clad Evzone became a “tsolias” (tsolia meant rags in Greek) because of petty attire of the rebellious Greeks. Today they continue the tradition as the motionless and erect guards of the unknown Soldier at Constitution Square and the Presidential Palace. Soldiers are chosen very meticulously to become Evzones. They must have a height of 1.87 to 2.05 meters, excellent physique and character. Their “headquarters” can be found behind the Greek Parliament building which is where we can always find them. “They are trained always in pairs” explains the Commander of the Presidential Guard, Colonel Peter Miliopoulos “as the ierolochites of ancient Thebes were, I think”. The dress preparation of the pair of Evzones is a complete ritual and impossible to be done alone. The whole process can take up to an hour for the uninitiated and no less than 30 minutes for the more experienced Evzone. They wear two pairs of stock- ings so that their legs are undistinguishable and appear to be more like ancient Greek columns. Their caps, a blood red color, and their skirts have 400 folds, as many years as Greece was under the yoke of Ottoman rule. The Tsarouhi is worn last. Each pair weighs three kilos and is made of calf’s leather. The shoes are fastened together with 120 nails and stitched with 650 threads. Legend has it that the tassels at the nose of the shoe hid a knife. Once the Evzones are fully dressed they assume their duties. They will stand for hours, completely motionless, next to the eternally burning flame of the tomb of the unknown Soldier. A passerby may wipe the sweat from their eyes or the rain from their faces but they remain completely still. They are entitled to four hours rest before returning for another hour of duty. Every Sunday at 08:00 the Greek flag is raised on the Acropolis with all due honors and at 11:00 the official Changing of the Guard takes place. It is at times like these that the thoughts of the proud Evzone may travel to their colleague, Konstantinos Koukides, who in 1941 wrapped himself in the Greek flag and fell from the Acropolis to his death, refusing to surrender the flag to the nazi’s. 54 PHOTO: PARIS TAVITIAN 55 INTERVIEW // DU QIWEN BEIJING ATHENS HE IS AN AMBASSADOR WHO UNDERSTANDS GREECE DEEPLY AND SHOWS PROFOUND APPRECIATION FOR THE CULTURAL SIMILARITIES BETWEEN GREECE AND CHINA. INTERVIEW: YANG SHAO BO 56 INTERVIEW // I tOOK up My dutIes as China’s Ambassador to Greece in August 2011. Actually, Greece is where I started my diplomatic career. I was serving as a junior officer at the Chinese embassy between 1st May 1976 and 22nd August 1982. So, I spent the best years of youth, from the age of 24 to 30, in Greece. In a sense, Greece is my second homeland. Greece always occupies a special spot in my heart with its magnificent natural beauty, splendid cultural heritage and the friendliness of its people. I’m not superstitious. But I feel that it is fateful that I should come back to work as China’s Ambassador in Greece after some 30 years. ChInese ChILdren learn about Greece from textbooks in middle school. Their lessons on world history and culture start with Greece. People in China know that Greece is the birth- INTERVIEW // silk fabric produced in China around 200BC was recently excavated in Keramikos, Athens. We know that China was known as the silk country in ancient Greece. In Chinese museums you can see many Byzantine gold coins. A second century BC letter with both a Chinese and Greek seal was found in western China on the ancient Silk Road, providing unmistaken evidence to the interaction between the two ancient cultures. ALtOGether about 100.000 Chinese tourists visited Greece in 2012, which is expected to grow by a big margin this year. According to our friends at the Greek Embassy in Beijing, Chinese tourist’s applying for visas have increased more than 50% in the first half of this year. We are sure, this trend will keep growing stronger for many years to come. GREECE DRAWS SPIRITUAL NOURISHMENT FROM CULTURE AND PHILOSOPHY AND PHYSICAL NOURISHMENT FROM HEALTHY AND DELICIOUS FOOD! place of western civilization. The fact that China and Greece are the origins of the eastern and western civilizations respectively and each has made important contributions to human progress has given our two peoples a special cultural bond. We feel like spiritual pals. Despite the geographical distance between them, our ancestors were working, at about the same time, on the same key questions concerning culture and philosophy. Their findings formed the twin peaks in world civilization. ChInA AttAChes great importance to its relations with Greece, which is regarded as one of its best friends in Europe. Sino-Greek cultural exchanges can be traced back to ancient times, with the Silk Road playing the key link. I’m told by a Greek archeologist friend that GreeCe Is A fAsCInAtInG destination for Chinese tourists, with its seas, islands, mountain villages, archaeological sites each having its own charms. To me, Greece is the land of cultural diversity. Take the Cyclades islands for example, Santorini, Mykonos, Milos and Paros, each one of them is different and unique in its beauty. Of course, there are also places like Meteora, Mount Athos and the royal tomb of King Philip II in Vergina. The tourist can be sure of continued surprises and new discoveries during his visit in Greece. GreeK OLIve OIL, wine, and feta cheese are my favourites local products. While in Greece, you do not only draw spiritual nourishment from its culture and philosophy, but also relish its very healthy and delicious food. 58 59 FICTION STORY // PERICLES WALKS THROUGH HISTORY FAR FROM BIASED BELIEFS AND WITH A GENTLENESS AND PERFECT SENSE OF PROPORTION, PERICLES LED THE ATHENIAN DEMOCRACY THROUGH THE BRIGHTEST PERIOD OF THE CAPITAL'S HISTORY. In the area where the monument dedicated to his grandson Antiochus IV stands there once spanned the prestigious district of Melitis. It is morning in about 430 BC. Pericles has just left Aspasia at home to inspect the works of the Acropolis, which has begun reconstruction on his initiative after the invasion of the Persians in 480 BC. With his familiar restless gaze he walks on the paths that much later, in the 1950’s, the architect Dimitri Pikionis will so artfully pave with irregular stones and various other materials while always keeping a perfect sense of proportion. He passes the monumental Propylaea and quarries of Pendeli Mountain to reach the mount of the Acropolis. The sculptor has already outdone himself with the decoration of the temple. The statue of the armored goddess Athena made of wood, gold and ivory stands at 13 meters in the inner sanctum of the temple. The Athenians may have complained about the 44 talents of gold, which statue cost, but Pericles explained to them that, if necessary, the gold could easily be removed. The frieze of Ionic order is also in its place wrapping the temple with 160 meters of sculptures depicting the Panatheneic Procession. Phidias made sure to chisel the top of the stones deeper so that the sculpted surfaces would be inclined towards the viewer. This finding in combination with the bright colors - especially the deep blue background - solved the problem of the large Dionysiou Areopagitou Perikles (Filopappou) Dimitri Pikionis POST CLASSICAL ATHENS "SPROUTED" FROM VARIOUS MARBLE FRAGMENTS OF THE ACROPOLIS: 482 FRAGMENTS WERE USED IN THE ARSAKEIO GIRL'S SCHOOL, 128 IN THE OLD NATIONAL PRINTING PRESS AS WELL AS IN VARIOUS OTHER POST CLASSICAL BUILDINGS OF ATHENS. his eyes ferociously hunt for flaws but find none and exhibit a look of wellbeing when he sees that everything is going according to plan. He is satisfied with the intelligent and innovative solutions given by Mnesicles for the shaping of the rough terrain. From the south slope of the Acropolis Sophocles can be heard rehearsing verses from Antigone. Two and a half millennia later the Roman Odeon of Herod Atticus (stands where the Odeon of Pericles once stood. Antigone, however, always remains the same. As soon as Pericles passes to the other side of the Propylaea his face lights up. The most perfect accomplishment of the Athenian Democracy has been completed. We are in the year 430 BC and the Parthenon stands before Pericles. The only thing yet unfinished are the sculptures on the pediments but those too will be completed by 428 BC. Phidias has promised and there is no reason to doubt him. The pure white marble must travel 17,400 meters from the marble 64 Arsakeion 128 height at which the frieze was placed. The duo of Iktinos and Kallikratis also managed to give to the temple what Pericles had envisioned: life! Their design was based on extremely subtle calculations, refinements and curves to achieve the ultimate harmony. The columns taper from the base to the top and converge towards the inside (if elongated they will unite to form a pyramid) with plasticity deconstructing the burden of Dorian immobility. Although the tenacity of the general will not permit a public show of emotion, he is deeply moved by what he sees. He closes his eyes and inhales a deep breath of the Attica air. He remembers his mother, Agaristi, who just a few days before his birth saw in her sleep that instead of giving birth to a human child, she gave birth to a lion. He feels justified that he treats Aspasia as an equal, even if everyone judges him unfavorably, including his own son. A notion grows within him that history will remember him. 65 482 INTERVIEW // ELEFTHERIA DEKO THE ENLIGHTENED ONE WITH LIGHT EMBEDDED IN HER GENES, THE VERSATILE DESIGNER EXPLAINS THAT LIGHT DESIGN IS AN ART. INTERVIEW: KATIA MILIARAKI PHOTO: PARIS TAVITIAN HAIR & MAKE UP: STELLAR 67 INTERVIEW // you are the first “light architect” in Greece and the first Greek Woman in the Guiness Book of World records with an eMMy for the lighting of the Opening Ceremony of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Only God can be called an architect of light. I am simply a designer of lighting and I use light as a tool and mode of expression. As for the Opening Ceremony of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens I do not know what to say first. It was an experience of a lifetime. It had the majesty of a large in volume but also in artistic significance work for me. But more so, it was the feeling of responsibility towards empowering the expectations of all Greeks and the responsibility to succeed. We worked all together for an idea, not for individualism, and I think the result achieved and experienced was admired by all Greeks. And the Emmy came as further confirmation and I confess great joy and satisfaction. INTERVIEW // I got involved with the art of lighting by chance. It is the way life pushes you to accidently stumble upon your purpose. “Something” pushed me and I enrolled in a lighting design course at nYu where I was working on my Master’s Degree in Performance and Choreography. And that was it! Immediately a new world unfolded before me, colorful, bright and dynamic and it touched the chords of the figurative artist in me. As a child, I realized that I could paint my scene with light. Black and white or colorful, could “ dress” the scenic space, and more importantly could infuse feeling into the scene with light. I could change atmospheres with just light, depending on the project whether it was dance, theater or music and in this way contribute to the intention and inspiration of each works creator. you have highlighted with architectural lighting the building of the Alexander s. Onassis foun- WATCHING A SUNSET OR A SUNRISE ON A GREEK ISLAND THE FEELING IS ALWAYS THE SAME: AWE AND GRATITUDE. there is an urban myth that the inspiration for the famous lit pregnant belly of Opening Ceremony of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens was inspired by the arrival of your daughter. I did not know that the “secret” was out but yes, I was six months pregnant with my daughter, when our creative team was employed with the task of representing the transition of the history of art from antiquity to today for the opening ceremony. There was difficulty in deciding what artistic movement of Modern Greek art would follow the voice of Maria Callas. I remember putting my hands on the swollen belly and I said to the group “Let it be the Future, a promising and bright future, our children!”. The choreographer Dimitris Papaioannou asked me after that meeting if I would object to a photograph of 1:10 our mock design and so my pregnant bright belly got the script for the Opening Ceremony. how did you know that the sun, the light was something that would help you express yourself? dation on Amalias Avenue. On which other historical or modern building of Greece would you cast more light? Lighting has an obligation to respect Architecture and a very close relationship between the architect and the light designer is absolutely necessary. There is a worldwide trend today to “marry” architectural and lighting design in order to create very strong visual proposals as can be seen in the national Library of Minsk in Belarus, the Channel Tower in Tokyo, the Art Museum in Graz and the unica Tower in Vienna Austria, the Torre Agbar in Doha and the Institute of the Arabia World in Paris. In Greece there are many buildings which I would like to light but at this moment I feel that we need another kind of light in our country and in the minds of our politicians. Can you remember the first feeling you had looking at a sunset or a sunrise on a Greek island? The feeling is always the same: Awe and gratitude! 68 69 TRAVEL WITH YOUR SENSES ELEGANT SPOTS // ELEGANT SPOTS // DELICATESSEN STREET FOOD PANTOPOLEION THANASIS The full name is Pantopoleion tis Mesogeiakis Diatrofis.
