T here’s something overtly romantic about boarding a gigantic wide-body aircraft, taking off and leveling out seven miles above the earth, and peering out the window as the pilot gradually turns the nose and points it straight south. Twelve hours later, you’re in an alien land unlike any you’ve ever encountered: where the flora and fauna are the kind only found in exotic locations; where your winter is their summer; where the sun sets at half past 10 o’clock in the evening; where dinner is served at 11. A long w ith ex tensive read i ng about the goings-on in the southern hemisphere, I had met plenty of people over time who experienced the friendly, inviting South American culture. But despite the articulate and well-educated folks who sang the praises of Buenos Aires, Argentina, none were able to adequately verbalize the city’s grandeur and majesty. No one told me that the Spanish spoken in the United States and in Mexico was so decidedly different than that spoken in this former Spanish colony. And none were able to evoke just how painful saddle-sore can be after a day of polo. At least partially enlightened, I set off on a whirlwind trip to this crown jewel of Argentina. I would only have five days before the domestic grind pulled me back stateside, yet I committed to doing all those activities that you just can’t do in North America—not with the same style, anyway. So as style goes, I wanted to be in lavish surroundings when I was doing my planning, plotting, and sleeping. I booked a room at the Caesar Park Buenos Aires in the heart of the swanky, European-accented Recoleta district. When the taxi driver pulled into the brickyard roundabout, no fewer than seven attendants clad in black tie and tails opened my cab door, the cab’s trunk, then all four doors of the hotel. It was quite a grand arrival for a kid from Cleveland, but then again, it also served to set the tone for the forthcoming week. I checked into my plush room and stretched out on my down comforter. I could have very easily spent those five days lounging around that hotel, as I was completely at ease with an untrammeled view of downtown and 56 the Rio de la Plata. But I had things to do. People to see. And I was committed to not only riding a horse for the first time since I was 7, but to playing the sport of choice in that country: polo. The Passion of Surrender Tango is to Argentina what hip-hop is to America. I had often heard about the exhilaration of a live tango show, in the same way I had heard from people that visited Hawaii before me how a luau was a must-see event. Only when I got to Hawaii, the luau was in a stadium setting with 2,000 of my closest friends wearing Hawaiian shirts, black socks, and tennis shoes. To avoid a similar scene playing itself out in South America, I queried some locals and learned that the best tango show in town is Rojo Tango at the Faena Hotel & Universe. This would be an intimate gathering, no more than 70 people congregated in a room lit in all red. Even though I was there with my photographer, Scott, and not my wife, I got the sense that the venue’s atmosphere, coupled with the exquisite prawns, veal tenderloin, assorted desserts, CaesarParkBuenosAires Reservations: (54 11) 4819-1141, [email protected] www.caesar-park.com RojoTangoattheFaenahotel&Universe Reservations: (54 11) 5787-1536, [email protected] www.rojotango.com OperaPampaatLaRural Reservations: (54 11) 4777-5557, [email protected] www.operapampa.com.ar and bottomless glasses of Malbec (all included), would easily create a couple’s ideal romantic evening. Rojo Tango is essentially theater in the round. The musicians are positioned behind the audience, giving the sensation of surround sound in harmony with the visuals unfolding before your eyes onstage as well as in the aisles, behind the curtain, and on the bar. Each pair performs their act as though they are alone in a ballroom, where there are no wrong moves and where each touch on the back triggers new feelings of passion. They danced with entrega, a cultural paradigm that literally means to give of yourself to someone. To surrender. That’s exactly what each couple did. I mentioned to the hotel’s manager that, in addition to them being the most fluid, creative artists I’d ever seen, they were also incredible actors to make it appear as though the passion between them was authentic. “That’s no act,” she said. “True, they were hired and coupled together for how well they danced, but over time, every couple ended up being, well, a couple. You don’t dance like that night in and night out and not develop a chemistry.” Rojo Tango was truly a case of life imitating art. Ambling Through Town Buenos Aires is a pedestrian-friendly city. You can walk anywhere without incident and there’s no “getting lost,” because around each corner stands another interesting artifact or edifice. That’s the good news. The bad news is that given the breadth of uniqueness at your disposal, it’s almost impossible to cover everything in just a few short days. I started my stroll in the eclectic area known as La Boca, the Little Italy of Buenos Aires. All the storefronts are painted varying bold colors and the thoroughfares are lined with sidewalk ca fes a nd couples ta ngo da nci ng for money. From there, I caught a cab to Plaza de Mayo. Best known for housing the Casa Rosada (Presidential Palace), the area resembles the Reichstag in Berlin. A quarter of a mile away, the Obelisco is similar to the Washington Monument. When taken together, these attractions form a hybrid of western architecture that is accomplished much more colorfully. The famous Opera Pampa dinner show at La Rural in downtown provided that evening’s entertainment. The production was a unique combination of “Madame Butterfly” and Medieval Times. The show was in Spanish, but the visuals were so commanding and the music was so compelling that I followed the entire storyline with ease. Dinner was an authentic Fiesta Gaucha, where gauchos served glasses of Malbec along with all-you-can-eat meats and empanadas. Watching those horses perform inspired me to take my place in the saddle. Over the next two days, I would get to know Argentina’s equestrian culture, even though I hadn’t so much as petted, let alone ridden, a horse in over 25 years. Horsing Around Traveling to Argentina and not engaging in the horse culture is like visiting New York City and not seeing the Empire State Building. This is a society predicated on a ranching background. Many estancias (country homes) in the area open their ancient wooden doors to visitors as a means of escaping the urban bustle. The classiest of them all is ironically the one located closest to the airport, Estancia Villa Maria. A drive into the interior pampa region takes only 40 minutes (and they pick you up), yet the aesthetic of the home and the well-manicured grounds give the impression that you’re hundreds of miles into the hinterlands. The days are lazy and slow—simply a flawless environment when the master plan is to relax. Visitors can lounge by the pool or stroll through the woods at will. I found sanctuary under a lonely palm tree three stories tall and flanking a koi pond with a book I had been meaning to read. The other seven guests ambled the grounds, some rekindling once-virulent relationships; others were falling in love for the first time. More still rode horses. Me, I had Scott—more burro than thoroughbred—so I settled for a little R&R. And solitude. Each meal throughout the day is served outside. The other guests meet at the same time and share stories over more Malbec and bife do chorizo. I shared sweeping conversations with my new friends, though our bond was strengthened when the server presented us with mate, an herbal tea that is sipped communally. After another stroll, I decided it was time to climb on a horse and work up a lather with it. Instead, I got on the horse and trotted the feeling out of my lower half. Still,I had enough tension drained during my time at the estancia—and enough hours logged in the saddle—that I decided to ratchet it up a notch the next day. Argentina is the polo capitol of the world, claiming more international championships than any other country. El Rincon del Polo Club & School is regarded in riding circles as the Harvard of polo. Owner/operator Estani Robledo Puch and his two brothers are former professionals who have competed in every country where the sport is played. They pass their knowledge onto patrons of the ranch with lessons and matches, called “chukkers.” Experts and novices alike are welcome—even super-novices like me. I listened with rapt interest as Estani gave me a tutorial. He walked me (actually, he walked my horse) through all the scenarios one encounters in a match, then he took me to a family meal to meet the other players. Later that evening, I donned my red polo shirt and white jeans and played an official game of four-on-four. Watching polo matches before in West Palm Beach, Fla., I always remembered thinking: “If I had West Palm money, I’d be as good as those guys.” Well the hard truth is that polo players are some of the finest athletes I’ve encountered in any sport. This fact becomes even more apparent when they start young, like 11-year-old Cholito, who schooled me up and down the field. I couldn’t stay mad at him, though—not with that classic gap-toothed grin he flashed at me as he made me look like it was my fi rst time ever on a horse. “How absurd!” I thought. “It’s my third time on a horse.” I didn’t want to bid farewell to Estani and the polo ranch. Nor did I want to say goodbye to Estancia Villa Maria. Or Rojo Tango. Or Opera Pampa. Or the Caesar Park. But my journey was done and it was time for the “round” part of my trip. I had those same romantic feelings as I boarded the wide-body jet for my ride home. Truthfully, they were more intense, since folklore gave way to reality as I experienced the best that Buenos Aires had to offer. Or maybe my feelings were more intense on the way home because of the 12 hours I had to really get to know my saddle-sore. ADAM PITLUK is the author of Standing Eight and Damned To Eternity. After browsing through this brochure, or our Web site, tell us or your travel agent where you want to stay, for how long, and what sort of things you want to do while you are there. We will quote a price that includes a special airfare, hotel room and applicable hotel taxes, as well as any airport transfers or optional features that may be available through AmericanAirlines Vacations. Unless otherwise noted, as in the case of hotels identified as “All-Inclusive,” our quoted prices do not include other taxes or governmental fees, meals, gratuities or security surcharges, porterage, car rental drop-off fees, and items of a personal nature. GENERAL CONDITIONS Reservations: How Do I Book? If you are familiar with your chosen destination, you may want to book it yourself either through our Web site at aavacations.com or by calling us at (800) 321-2121. If you are not certain about any aspect of your plans, particularly if you are trying a new destination, we suggest you let our specially trained representatives or your travel agent make your reservation to assure that the vacation package is best designed specifically for you or your family. Deposits and Final Payments: When Do I Pay? Once your specially designed vacation is booked, a deposit of $100 per person is due within three (3) days. Final payment must be made at least 45 days prior to your scheduled departure. From 12/17/2008–1/3/2009, final payment must be made 60 days prior to departure. In some cases, there may be special airfares that offer better fares than our tour fares. In those cases, full payment on the air portion may be due within 24 hours of booking. Bookings made through our Internet site require deposit within 24 hours from the time of booking rather than the 3 days. We urge you to pay special attention to these dates because your booking will automatically be cancelled if payment is not received. Again, payments can be made either by contacting us directly, through your travel agent, or online for online bookings. AAdvantage® miles may also be used to pay for hotels stays, airport transfers, and other features. Price Guarantee: What if the Price Changes? The simple answer is that if the price increases after you have given us a deposit, it’s our problem. We guarantee the cost of your vacation will not increase. However, this guarantee does not apply to increases in fuel surcharges or air taxes. In some cases, there may be special airfare sales that actually offer better fares than our tour fares. In those cases, we will give you the option of either using the tour fares, with all the flexibility and protection they offer, or using instead the sale fares. The sale fares are often not refundable and will be guaranteed only when you make final payment on these sale fares, rather than from the time of your deposit. Documents: What Sort of Vouchers or Tickets Will I Receive and When? AmericanAirlines Vacations will send you two separate sets of documents. First, you will receive either an electronic ticket confirmation or paper ticket (subject to printing surcharge if not using the electronic confirmation method), issued for your air transportation. With electronic tickets all you need is a passenger receipt and passport. Second, we will send you vouchers or confirmation slips for all of your land arrangements. These documents will be mailed approximately three weeks prior to your departure date. We urge you to review your documents thoroughly to ensure they are correct. To expedite documents, an additional service fee of $25 would apply. Restrictions and Fees: Are There Any Special Rules I Need to Know? Yes. In order to put together the special values we offer, we have to impose some restrictions. For example, the minimum consecutive stay we can offer is two nights. Other restrictions include: Revisions/Cancellations: Rules and fees for revising air arrangements depend upon the type of airfare used. Non-refundable fares remain non-refundable even when the AmericanAirlines Vacations Administrative Service charge fees apply for changes to dates or destination. American Airlines lost ticket policy will apply for reissuance of lost air tickets. For revisions to your land arrangements, a $25 revision fee will apply for each change after the documents are issued. In addition, no revision may be made within 7 days of departure. Cancellations: If a vacation is cancelled, AmericanAirlines Vacations will retain a cancellation fee. Contact an AmericanAirlines Vacations specialist for details. Any money to be refunded to you will be refunded in the same form of payment you used originally (i.e., credit card) and will be received within 6-8 weeks. Though we process refunds as quickly as possible, we must receive the vouchers and/or air tickets we forwarded to you before we can release any refund. These documents, any application for refunds or compensation, if permitted, must be submitted in writing to us within 45 days of scheduled return and must be accompanied by all negotiable land documents and air tickets. It is not necessary to return non-refundable air tickets. Vouchers must be returned to: AmericanAirlines Vacations, Customer Service, Mail Drop 5445, P.O. Box 619616, DFW Airport, Texas 75261-9616. VACATION DETAILS Please note that refunds are available only when vacations are properly cancelled within stated time limits. Because our vacations are specially priced as complete, customized packages, we cannot refund portions of the vacation price for unused or partially unused land components or features, including unused hotel nights or other components such as car rentals, transfers or lift tickets. Travel Agents please note: you must cancel records in your automated tour system or the land portion will not show cancellation, and penalties may apply. Late Bookings: We try to accommodate vacation bookings as little as 4 business days before departure, subject to availability. Any booking within 15 days of departure, however, will include an expedite fee of $25. AAdvantage: If applicable, AAdvantage miles are awarded once per booking to one AAdvantage member who must be one of the passengers in the reservation. AAdvantage miles cannot be earned on multiple reservations for consecutive days, known as back-to-back reservations. Mileage is awarded after travel is completed. Members using any amount of miles as a form of payment will not be able to accrue mileage credit in the same reservation. Cancellation and Change Waiver What if Something Goes Wrong? Fee Waiver/Pre-Departure Protection: $59 per person. Allows you to revise your booking at any time before 7 days prior to departure (no revisions are possible within 7 days), or to cancel your booking entirely any time until your scheduled departure time, without incurring any revision or cancellation fee. Some features of your vacation may not be refundable, even if this waiver is purchased. Other conditions of this waiver may apply. Again, some airfares may be put on sale as non-refundable or with other fare rules and those rules are not covered by this Waiver. Waiver is not available to purchase for the travel dates 12/17/2008 –1/3/2009. Airport Check-In: It is recommended that you check-in at the airport at least two hours prior to the scheduled flight departure and report to the gates at least 30 minutes before the flight departure. Failure to comply with these conditions may result in the loss of your seat. Car Rental Requirements: Driver must be at least 25 years of age and in possession of a valid driver’s license and a major credit card in their name. Car cost may not include drop charges, tolls, taxes, surcharges, upgrades, recoupment fees, airport fees and optional charges such as protection options and additional drivers. An under age fee will apply for drivers age 21-24 years. Rental charges are based on each 24 hour period commencing at time of rental, with any additional hours subject to extra charge. A major credit card or a cash refundable deposit is required to protect against incidental charges and damages, payable directly to the rental car company. Car rental companies will not refund any unused portion of a voucher.
