Easter Newsletter - The Business Academy Bexley
Spring 2016 Dear Parents/Carers This term has seen some really exciting events at the Academy, such as numerous enrichment, academic and parent events. The pupils and staff are working diligently as we approach external examinations this summer. For many, their exams have already begun with English Speaking and Listening tests. Both staff and pupils are working hard to ensure that pupils are fully prepared for their exams by providing walking talking mock examinations, Saturday interventions, week day interventions and Easter revision classes. The support of parents/carers is crucial to help us to support your child in reaching their full potential. I have held a number of coffee afternoons with parents/carers and will continue to do so next term, details will be available on the website and via text. The Academy’s vision and values underpin all our work, it is vital that our staff and pupils embrace and model these values. I have seen real examples of this recently, most notably from our older pupils in the 6th form, the details of which can be found in this newsletter. They th are a credit to their parents/carers and Mr Cook and his 6 form team. Whatever the final outcomes in the summer for our year 6, 11 and 13 pupils, the staff and Governors of the Business Academy Bexley are extremely proud of them all. The Academy recently welcomed the regional schools commissioner and educationalists from the DfE, they were truly impressed with our progress and the warm welcome from our pupils. Our Head of Primary phase Roberta Michalski is retiring after many years of successfully leading our younger pupils, both staff and pupils wish her well and thank her for her dedication to our school. May I take this opportunity to wish you a happy Easter. Yours sincerely Niall Fallon - Acting Principal Believe · In ourselves and others · In dreams and aspirations Achieve · By being the best we can be · By seizing every opportunity Be Responsible · By taking ownership of our learning and behaviour · By taking pride in our community 1 Contents Page Page 1 Message from Mr Fallon Page 2 Contents Page Page 3 Beavers and Cubs arrive at the Academy Building Safe Havens For Jimmy Page 4 Post 16 Refurbishment Year 13 BTEC Business Trip Page 5 The Academy Choir Year 9 Parents/Carers Tutor/Options Evening Page 6 University Challenge Day GCSE Walking - Talking - Mocks Page 7 World Book Day Page 8 Exercise Unified Response Page 9 Year 7 Transition Speech and Language Intervention Page 10 Speech and Language Therapy (SALT) Year 11 Saturday Intervention Classes Page 11 Extended Services - Primary After School Activities Page 12 Extended Services - Secondary After School Activities Page 13 Attendance Parent/Carer Contact Information Page 14 School Payment Options Free School Meals Easter Holiday Vocal Courses Page 15 Calendar Events Exams Page 16 Academy Uniform - Secondary Page 18 Academy Term & Holiday Dates - 2016/2017 2 Beavers and Cubs arrive at the Academy st st The 1 Thamesmead Beavers and Cubs started here at the Academy on Tuesday 1 March and will run every Tuesday during term time. We recently hosted a taster evening for parents/carers to find out a little of what happens at both Beavers and Cubs. Beavers is for children aged 6 - 8 and runs from 3.30 – 4.30 Cubs is for children aged 8 – 10.5 and runs from 4.45 – 6.15 Both Beavers and Cubs are held in the primary hall and parents/carers wishing their children to join either Beavers, or Cubs should see one of the Beaver/Cubs leaders after school in one of the session times. Alternatively, primary reception have contact details for both clubs should you have any questions. They will also provide a basic young persons information contact details form, which should be completed and taken to the first session. Building Safe Havens For Jimmy For Jimmy started working with Year 6 pupils from the Academy as part of their social action schools programme, being carried out in 18 schools across three London boroughs last year. For Jimmy is partnering up with Volunteer Police Cadets to launch a Junior Police Cadet Unit for the pupils. At the start of the New Year the Year 6 pupils were taken on their first Safe Haven walk on Plumstead High Street. Safe Havens are a simple idea, the pupils go out onto their local high street and ask shopkeepers if they would lock the door and call the police if a young person or adult was in danger or felt threatened on the street. After a successful Safe Haven walk, the young people signed up shops along the length of the high street, each of which will display a Safe Haven For Jimmy sticker in their window. As well as helping to keep young people safe in the community, the scheme has been vital in building relationships between young people, local businesses, the police, council and community in and around Bexley. As part of the day the young people visited our Ten Thousand Hands café in Ladywell. They were then taken to the For Jimmy office to meet the whole team and learn about the different roles undertaken within the charity. The most exciting part of the day for all the pupils was a visit to Catford Police Station, where they were all so inquisitive and enjoyed exploring the building. Pupils were given a tour of the station, visiting the cells, getting to meet the officers on duty and a few of them ending up in handcuffs! As well as it being a fun day out for the pupils, they also gained a greater insight into the work of For Jimmy within the community, and built relations and an understanding of the role of the local police. 3 Post 16 Refurbishment In September Mr Cook challenged the Sixth Form Junior Leadership Team to re-design the Sixth Form area, which had become outdated and failed to promote a vibrant and inspiring working environment. Initially, we were given a budget of only £500.00, which once our costing was finalised we soon realised that we needed a substantial injection of capital. So we decided to embark on a different avenue, fundraising! In several meetings we put our heads together and brainstormed various ideas including movie nights, discos, nonuniform days and crowd funding, the nonuniform day last month raised a massive £706.55! But, with deadlines in place, it soon became apparent that this avenue would not generate the funds required within the deadline set. Our next thought was to locate a sponsor and where better to look than our own Sir David Garrard, whom after an exchange of warming letters made a very generous donation…it was now time for a plan of action! With the Year 13 Business group working on a unit which could incorporate this project we moved forward with our vision. Colour scheme (after much debate!) was agreed upon, carpet and furniture ordered, then it was the practical side of the project with some of us showing a natural flair for the art of decorating and some of us not! The assembly of flat packed furniture was a learning curve for all of us! We are now making full use of the refurbished areas and once our “snagging list” is cleared we are planning to have an official opening hopefully with Sir David undertaking the cutting of the ribbon. On behalf of the entire Sixth Form we would like to thank you for your support towards our refurbishment and if you would like a viewing please speak to a member of the Junior Leadership Team who would be happy to show you around. Year 13 BTEC Business Trip On Wednesday 2nd March, the year 13 BTEC Business students were welcomed to the John Lewis branch in Bluewater to listen to a talk from a senior partner who explained how the business organises its customer service. The students had a chance to tour the food retail section Waitrose and had the opportunity to ask partners within the business questions. The whole day was a great success and the students were impeccable in their behaviour. 4 The Academy Choir The choir meet Friday lunchtimes with Mr Dennis and Miss Carless our resident singing teacher and is open to all year groups. In Term 2 we performed at our annual Christmas concert and went into the local community where we performed at Thamesmead Town Centre. This term we will be performing alongside the primary students singing a selection of songs in time for the Easter holidays. Year 9 Parent/Carers Tutor/Options Evening Our Year 9 Evening was held on the 10th March and was a resounding success, it was wonderful to see so many parents/carers attend. The purpose of the evening was two-fold; for parents/carers to speak with their child's tutor and to see what we have to offer in terms of educational choices as they move into Year 10. Each subject was promoted by teachers in the Business Court, showcasing their subject and speaking to both students and parents/carers alike. The choices that students make at this crucial point in their lives could be one of the most important decisions they make. These shape future opportunities and help achieve aspirations. When students leave Year 11 we want them to be proud of their achievements and believe that 'you can be the best that you can be', this evening was the first step to making sure the right decisions are made. 5 University Challenge Day In February we took a group of Year 9 students to a University Challenge day at University College London (ranked 7th in the QS World Rankings). University Challenge is a full day visit for gifted and talented pupils. This consisted of a motivating introduction to university, designed to address the challenges facing their specific Year Group. Students took part in an interactive, academic taster session to broaden awareness of subjects taught at university, a tour of the UCL campus led by a current student and an educational quiz about aspects of university. The day was enjoyed by both students and staff alike. GCSE Walking - Talking - Mocks Our GCSE candidates sat Walking Talking Mocks (WTM) in Maths on the 2nd March. The purpose of the WTM is to help the candidates build their confidence in answering exam type questions in the environment that they will find themselves in the summer when they sit their GCSEs. The candidates sat in the same seats that they will be sat in the Summer; making them feel familiar with the environment will boost their confidence when it comes to thier final exam. Mr Sadiq (Head of Maths) did a fantastic job in going through the exam rubrics and deconstructing the exam questions for the candidates. Many of them left the WTM saying that they now felt more confident and ready to tackle the mock exam next week and ultimately their GCSEs in the summer. 6 World Book Day - Primary Thursday 3rd March saw books come alive at the Primary as pupils and staff seized the opportunity to dress up as their favourite book character. Gangsta Granny, Fantastic Mr Fox, The Mad Hatter and The Wolf were just some of the characters spotted throughout the day. To date, we have raised just over £150, which will allow us to purchase additional books for our Accelerated Reader scheme, providing the children with the opportunity to enjoy even more books! Thank you for all your support in making the day such a success. World Book Day - Secondary English Team From Jay Gatsby to Matilda, staff and pupils at the Academy celebrated some of the most revered - and feared - fantasy characters from their favourite stories to mark World Book Day on Thursday 3rd March. World Book Day is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it's a celebration of reading. In fact, it's the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world. 7 Exercise Unified Response The Year 11 team would like to congratulate Joe on his participation in the recent Exercise Unified Response. Following his success, last year, on the Fire Cadet Course, facilitated by Erith Fire Station, Joe was invited to take part in this once in a lifetime experience. The exercise, which took a year to plan, took place between the 29th rd February and the 3 March, and was conducted simultaneously at four separate venues across London. The purpose of the event was to test London's response to a major incident and was the biggest training exercise in UK history; it involved London's firefighters, police officers and ambulance staff, responding to a staged building collapse over the London Underground. Specialised teams from Hungary, Italy and Cyprus assisted with the training event, alongside teams from Disaster Victim Identification and Urban Search and Rescue. Thousands of people, hired to play the roles of disaster victims, wore special effects make-up to add to the realism of the scene. Joe supported this exercise at Dartford, where an entire tube station was recreated, then crushed beneath a disused power station. The scenario was created to simulate a tower block collapse onto Waterloo station. As well as convincingly playing the part of an injured member of the public, Joe supported the professionals by carrying equipment and performing essential maintenance tasks. Joe, who one day hopes to join the Fire Brigade, described the event as 'an amazing experience that I will remember for the rest of my life. It was an honour to work with the emergency services'. We are extremely proud of Joe's commitment and involvement in an event which will ultimately improve the way in which future emergencies are dealt with and save many lives. Well done Joe, you're a hero! 8 Year 7 - Transition The Year 7 students in Transition are studying poetry within their English lessons this term. They are looking at different forms of poetry, including: limericks, sonnets and haiku, to develop a deeper understanding of the technical terms and techniques used within poetry; namely similes, metaphors, alliteration and onomatopoeia. To strengthen these important skills pupils have been given a term-long project to create a poetry anthology of their own. Joshua began his anthology with a counting poem and used alliteration for effect to convey his thoughts and ideas about 'Movement'. Movement One wonky wheelchair wobbling wildly Two tatty Toyotas turning tightly around the track Three thrilling Thunderbirds throbbing before takeoff Four fast Ferraris fighting for the chequered flag Five flying fighter planes flaming their engines Six sailing ships shrinking into the sunset Joshua Year 7 Speech and Language Intervention Speech and Language intervention is part of the curriculum offered by the SEN department to many of our students, who need to have the opportunity to raise their skills in speech, language, comprehension, social skills, emotional and anger awareness, memory recall, confidence and self-esteem building, this intervention also builds on students literacy skills. This intervention has a working achievement board, to enable the students to recognise where they are in terms of achievement, which also motivates our students and builds on their team building and competitive skills. The SEN department are delighted to announce we have three students whom have shown great commitment and participated in all aspects of the SALT programme and have achieved step four of the working board and have been rewarded with certificates, trophies and prizes. These Students are Ugur (Year 7), Samir (year 7) and Olivia (Year 8). 9 Speech and Language Therapy (SALT) Targeted speech, language and communication intervention is offered to students who have difficulty with comprehension, social skills, confidence and communication. Students are able to monitor their own progress through a working achievement process which builds motivation, team building and competitive skills. Intervention may be individual or within small group settings and the aim is to improve communication and literacy skills. Intervention staff regularly monitor and track students' progression through a process of regular assessment. Year 11 Saturday Intervention Classes Saturday Interventions classes started on the 27th February and the last session before we th break up for Easter will be 19 March. Attendance has been by invitation only and more than 70 students have benefited from these sessions. The students have been full of praise for the work that has gone into these sessions and they have said that they feel the sessions have been very beneficial to them personally in preparing them for their exams. The reason for this success has been making sure that the intervention is targeted to individual students that need it and keeping the class sizes small. It is our intention to continue after the Easter break with these Saturday classes and our hope is that we can involve more year 11s. 10 11 Wednesday Wednesday Netball Coaching Police Cadets 6 7 8 Pale Green = Ac vi es clubs run by - Primary & Secondary Yellow = Our Academy Community Partnerships Clubs Family Zumba Club Thursday Saturdays Only Saturdays 9 Bird College - Music Club 10 Bird College - Music Club - Invite Only Saturdays 5 Tuesdays Tuesdays Tuesdays Tuesdays Beavers Clubs 1st Thamesmead Scout Girls Only - Football Coaching Session Maths Club 3 4 Club Days Mondays Mondays Clubs Futsal & Football training Dance Club No 1 2 Year 6 Year 4 Year group Recip on to Y6 Year 4 to Y6 9:00 - 11:00am 1:00 - 3:30pm staff All Welcome Year 5 & 6 Year 6 3:30 - 4:30pm 3:30 - 4:30pm 3:30 - 5:00pm 3:30 - 4:30pm Age 6 to 8 4:45 - 6:15pm Age 8 to 10.5 3:30 - 4:30pm Year 6 3:15 - 4:15pm Y6 Booster Sessions 3:30 - 4:30pm 3:30 - 4:15pm Club Times Extended Service - A er School Ac vi es Clubs - Primary Sec on As From - 11th April un l Friday 27th May 2016 Primary main hall & Library Invite Only - Primary main hall Primary main hall MUGA - Netball Courts Primary main hall Primary main hall Primary main hall Astro Turf Pitch with CACT Year 6 rooms Sports Hall Sec or Astro Turf Pitch Primary main hall Venue Dates TBC Dates TBC On going - Term me only On going - Term me only On going - Term me only On going - Term me only On going - Term me only On going - Term me only Tue 3rd May On going - Term me only On going - Term me only Time Line 12 Futsal & Football training Greencar - Club Art Club - Support Sessions Guitar Club Art Club - Support Sessions Drums & Percussion Clubs Army Cadets Netball Coaching - £1.00 per person Fridays Only Music Club Basketball Coaching Football - Open Sessions - FREE 16 17 19 20 Thursday Thursday Thursday Thursday Friday Friday Friday Music Sports Community Sports Wednesday Wednesday Wednesday Wednesday Academic Music Community Community Sports Academic Music Sports Technology Tuesday Tuesday Tuesday Tuesday Tuesday Tuesday Monday Monday Monday Monday All Years All Years Year 9 Only All Years All Years All Years Year 10 Only All Years Young People Y6 to Y9 All Years All Years Y6 - Primary Only All Years Year group Room Number Music Rooms Sports Hall DT Work Shop Room 131 Room 243 Music Rooms Playground Astro Turf Mr G Dennis Mr Bu on Mr Langford & Mr Crouchman Music Rooms Sports Hall DT Work Shop Mr Rose-Mr Kearey-Ms Razvand G07a - G07b - GO6 Mr G Dennis Army Cadets - Peter Kim of - CACT Ms Vina Mrs Crouchman Mr Rose-Mr Kearey-Ms Razvand G07a - G07b - GO6 Mr Dennis Mr Reardon Mr Langford & Mr Crouchman Mr Rose-Mr Kearey-Ms Razvand G07a - G07b - GO6 Leading Person 3:05 - 3:35pm 3:30 - 4:30pm 5:00 - 6:50pm All Years 6 Formers & Y11 Young People Mr G Dennis Mr B Clark CACT - Kickz Programme Music Rooms Sports Hall Astro Turf 3:05 - 5:30pm All Years Mr Rose-Mr Kearey-Ms Razvand G07a - G07b - GO6 3:05 - 3:35pm All Years Mr G Dennis Music Rooms 6:00 - 8:00pm Young People Army Cadets - Peter Playground 7:30 - 9:00pm Community - All Ages Steph - Now's the Time MUGA 3:05 - 5:30pm 3:05 - 3:35pm 3:15 - 4:15pm 3:05 - 4:30pm 3:05 - 5:30pm 3:05 - 4:05pm 3:35 - 4:15pm 3:05 - 3:35pm 6:00 - 8:00pm 3:15 - 4:30pm 3:05 - 5:30pm 3:05 - 3:35pm 3:30 - 4:30pm 3:05 - 4:30pm Club Days Club Times Pale Green = Ac vi es clubs run by - Secondary staff Yellow = Community Partnership - For Young People & Community Art Club - Support Sessions Keyboard Club Football Coaching Greencar - Club 21 22 23 Academic Music Sports Technology Category Art Club - Support Sessions Academic Science & Gardening - Club Academic English Interven on Academic Technology & Apple Garageband - Club Music Army Cadets Community Girls Only - Football Coaching Session Community Sports Club 12 13 14 15 5 6 7 8 10 11 No 1 2 3 4 Extended Service - A er School Ac vi es Clubs - Secondary Sec on From - 11th April - 27th May 2016 Attendance The classes with best attendance to end of Spring term are: Reception: Key Stage 1: Key Stage 2: Key Stage 3: Key Stage 4: RD 2R 6L 7REG1 10REG8 97.6% 98.3% 97.6% 96.6% 96.6% Congratulations on your excellent attendance! We have been working hard to improve attendance and time keeping at The Business Academy. There are a few key things that we wish to develop with all our families. If your child’s attendance falls below 95% it is investigated more thoroughly and may be referred to the Education Welfare Officer. If you are supported by the Education Welfare Officer and by school, but the attendance rate doesn’t improve, you are at risk of being taken to court. This is an extreme measure, but one we have taken in order to improve our attendance rate. Going to court involves explaining to a magistrate why you, as a parent/carer have failed to bring your child to school and it could result in a large fine. Social care may also be contacted. Why is high attendance important to my child's education? As a parent/carer you want the best for your children. Having a good education is an important factor in opening up more opportunities in adult life. Absence at any stage leads to gaps in your child’s learning. This in turn can: • mean that they fall behind in work • affect their motivation • affect their enjoyment of learning • lead to poor behaviour • affect their desire to attend school regularly • affect their confidence in school • mean they miss out on the social life of school and extra-curricular opportunities and experiences • affect their ability to have or sustain friendships. Let us know if you are finding it difficult to get your child to school as we can help and by working together could prevent further action being taken. Continue to contact school with any reasons for absences and bring in evidence of absences. Thank you for your on-going support and cooperation in this area of school life. Parent/Carer Contact Information It is very important that we can contact you in case of an emergency. We need to have at least one other person we can contact if we arene not able to reach you. Please complete a contact form to keep the school informed of any changes in contact details or emergency contacts. If you are leaving your child in the care of someone else (i.e. grandparents or older sibling) for any period you must inform the school of the new arrangements and provide the school with the name, contact phone numbers, and address of the person and the length of time you will be away. 13 School Payment Options – Primary School Meals, Breakfast and After School Club only We have now introduced a new system for the payment of Primary School Dinners, Breakfast and After School Club.
