Growing up: Kevin and Sadie
1 Graduation
Read the texts and answer the questions below.
Colleen Ann Fitzpatrick is the real name of the American pop singer Vitamin C. Her biggest hit is the song
“Graduation (Friends Forever)”. The song is often played at high school graduations. Here are some of the
lyrics:
… Will we think about tomorrow like we think about now?
Can we survive it out there?
Can we make it somehow?
I guess I thought that this would never end
And suddenly it’s like we’re women and men
Will the past be a shadow that will follow us ‘round?
Will these memories fade when I leave this town.
I keep, keep thinking that it’s no goodbye.
Keep on thinking it’s a time to fly.

better known under her stage name Vitamin C.
Colleen comes from Old Bridge in New Jersey. She
is the youngest of three children.
When she was in high school she was a dancer
and later she started to sing in a few local bands.
Her musical talent doesn’t stop at singing: she
can play the bass guitar and the keyboard, too.
Colleen started her career as the lead singer of
the punk band Eve’s Plum. The band was quite
successful and performed together until 1998.
After her band broke up Colleen started her solo
career in 1999. She changed her stage name to
Vitamin C and performed dance/pop music.
The Vitamin C song “Graduation (Friends Forever)”
became a huge hit in the spring of 2000. The song
reached the Top Ten in the USA and the second
position in Australia’s and Ireland’s charts in
2000.
Afterwards, Colleen didn’t have any more hits as
Vitamin C and lost her recording contract.
In 2000, when she was very well-known as
Vitamin C, toy producer Mattel released a doll of
her and Tommy Hilfinger made a lipstick matching
her orange hair.
Colleen also tried acting. She had small roles in
a number of well-known films like The Naked Gun
2½, Scary Movie 2 or Dracula 2000.
Colleen has written or co-written many songs for
other artists. She wrote the song “We Are Gonna
Happen” for Emma Roberts. She co-wrote “Where
Do We Go” with Scout Taylor-Compton in 2005.
She wrote the single “Make Some Noise” for
Krystal Meyers in 2008. In 2009, she wrote “Let's
Get Crazy” for Miley Cyrus who sang it in the film
“Hannah Montana”. Colleen also wrote the song
“One and the Same”, for Demi Lovato and Selena

One of the themes in the book is that it only takes a few seconds to do something that is going to affect
the rest of your life… I think the decision to write for teenagers partly came about because I’ve noticed an
increasing number of teenagers coming to the readings for the other books.
I wouldn’t like to think that there is a morality to the book. Obviously it’s kind of moral territory talking
about teenagers having sex and making mistakes ... Well, I think kind of a theme of the book is the future.
It is something you spend an awful lot of time thinking about when you’re a teenager.
