She sang in church choirs as a child, played piano when she could, listened to jazz LPs on the family’s large Blaupunkt Hi-Fi stereo and went to sleep to classical music playing on a small AM radio most nights. She taught herself guitar at 13 and soon formed an all-girl rock and roll band called “the Anti…” . An unexpected love affair with opera led her to voice lessons and eventually to enroll in the music program at Sonoma State University in 1985. In 1987 she formed a theater company called “Mixed Company” with choreographer Diana Keener. She wrote and performed in 6 mixed media theater pieces integrating her original music, dance, spoken word, sculpture, film and projections. The company performed throughout Sonoma County as well as Theater Artaud in San Francisco and CalArts in Valencia. Since 2004 she has directed and performed in the Mad Maggies. It was the events of 1991, twenty-five years ago, that began her story with accordions, love and the Cotati Accordion Festival. Thank you to the board members of the Cotati Accordion Festival for selecting me as the honorary director this year. I was startled to receive this honor but even more startled to review the past twenty-five years and see how much the festival and my life as a musician have been entwined since 1991. That fateful year started off with a friend giving me two Hohner accordions Maggie Martin of the Mad Maggies with husband Gary Wium. which she had inherited. Knowing I was a musician, she figured I would know what to do with them. One was a dry-tuned student model Hohner, the other was a musette-tuned 1932 Hohner “Carmen”. It was love at first hearing. Just days later, on February 12th, Gary Wium and I, already falling in love, connected in the biblical sense and began, what is still, our wild adventure together. In June, I graduated from Sonoma State University with a B. A. in Music cum laude, with distinction. It was a continued on page 10 7 8 what’s Happening at the Festival...? That August, Gary and I were living in Cotati when we heard about an upcoming accordion festival in La Plaza Park. Of course I had to go. I hauled my old Carmen to the plaza and, when the moment came, I joined in on the “Lady of Spain-A-Ring”. Thus, my very first public appearance as an accordionist was at the first Cotati Accordion Festival twenty-five years ago. I have been a fan and supporter ever since. That September, in a moment of true daring, I entered the first San Francisco “Main Squeeze” contest at the Cannery which was organized by Tom Torriglia (Bella Ciao). I took second place, certainly more for my chutzpah than my fledgling accordion chops. I sang a Cajun/Zydeco inspired song called “Street Dog” that I had written for Gary. He had come to support me in the audience but didn’t know about the tune. I loved Maggie Martin and Roxanne Oliva at the Cotati Kid's Day Parade. surprising him in front of the hundreds of spectators. Cotati Festival founder Jim Boggio was one of the judges. He told me how much he liked my tune. I was thrilled. An accordion babe was born. I still have the gold colored tin crown hanging in my studio. Years of accordion-laced activities followed. In 1994, I joined Polkacide and survived thirteen years playing punk polkas, gigging throughout the Bay Area and touring the West and Midwest. In 2004, I gathered together fellow musicians to realize and record some of my compositions. The Mad Maggies began with that first album recording. Now eleven years and 6 albums later, we are still going strong. We’ve played all over Northern California and have toured the Northwest and Midwest. The Cotati Accordion festival is, hands down, one of our favorite shows to play. I have volunteered several times to talk up the festival on local radio stations, joining festival stalwart Richard Cullinen and others, often entirely too early in the morning. “Accordion Babe” Maggie. continued on page 38 10 Skyler Fell's Accordion Apocalypse Stage ★ Hernandez Hideaway (North Bay) ★ The Ghost Note Ensemble (Oakland) ★ Eight Dice Cloth (Santa Cruz) ★ Skyler Fell & Friends ★ Amber Lee Baker ★ Hernan Cortez Find us just inside the south gate! After two years of basic musical education he began to play the accordion at the age of six and a half at the municipal music school of Süßen and his teacher was Mr. Anatoli Lick until September 2009. Since 2006 he has been a student of Hans-Günther Kölz at the Hohner Conservatory Trossingen. Since he was nine, Matthias has also taken piano lessons. His recent piano and jazz piano teacher is Martin Rosengarten. Matthias’s musical education also include master classes with Frédéric Deschamps in France, 2006 Matthias won the national final of the prestigious German competition “Deutscher Akkordeon Musikpreis” (German Accordion Music Prize) in the virtuoso entertainment music category and 2009 he won the first prize in the virtuoso entertainment music category of this competition as well as the first prize in the classical music category and therefore was awarded the prize by the Prime Minister of his state Baden-Württemberg. 2007 and 2010 Matthias received the first prize in the national competition for classical music “Jugend musiziert” (Youths play music). A great experience was an invitation of the German Music Council and the Goethe-Institute to play four concerts in Ankara in 2008. 2008 Matthias won the second “Premio” during the 33rd international accordion festival “Città di Castelfidardo” in the junior competition for classical music. 2011 he won the third place in the famous competition for virtuoso entertainment music “Primus Ikaalinen” which was televised by Finnish Television. Also in this year he won the “Coupe Mondiale” world championship in the category “junior virtuoso entertainment” and got the 8th place in the category for classical music of the same competition Electronic music also fascinates Matthias. 2009 he received the first prize of the ROLAND V-Accordion Festival in the junior category and 2011 he won the national final of this competition in the adult category and received the second prize of the international competition in Rome. Matthias was awarded the title “Kid of the Year 2009” as overall winner of the “Kids2Keys” contest which is a competition for creativity and electronic instruments organized by the IFET association. Since then he has played concerts for ROLAND, for example during the “Night of Keys” on the Musikmesse Frankfurt. What Matthias likes about the accordion is the sometimes underestimated variety of this instrument and the possibility to use it for every possible style of music which often results in surprises. ▲ 12 Patrick Harison Patrick Harison is a young American button accordionist adept in a wide variety of settings and genres. The Deaf Club (an actual club for deaf people) had been hiring punk bands to perform. When it was suggested that some did not want a punk band, an inspired band leader and founder Ward Abronski, along with his long term girlfriend and Polkacide’s first drummer, Hayok Kay, formed a “really loud polka band” to play. When the gig was cancelled (ironically for noise abatement), Ward realized it was too good of an idea with too many great musicians, to just let die. He booked the band for San Francisco’s punk club The Mabuhay on February 8, 1985. Unfortunately, the Mab misspelled their names on the flyers but the rest, as they say, is history. Since then, Polkacide has played with such diverse groups as Sun Ra, Primus (Basa guest with his ocarina at The Fillmore), Brave Combo, k.d. lang, The Dead Kennedys, and many, many more. Dan’s music is influenced by the traditions of Eastern Europe from Bulgarian Roma Wedding Bands to polyphonic vocal laments, Early American Jazz and Film music from Busby Berkeley, and Cab Calloway to Scott Joplin, and modern alternative rock like Radiohead, Bjork, and Soundgarden. His extensive scoring catalogue for film and television is described as “hauntingly beautiful…quirky and energetic” (SF Bay Guardian). His soundtrack artistry spans a wide range of emotion and style, and has supported hundreds of cinematic works with rich virtuosic performance, lush acoustic orchestrations, sonic textures resonant with sound design, and strikingly innovative melodic themes. At the age of seven, a local Chicago accordion school called his parents and offered six weeks of free accordion lessons because they had heard their son “had talent.” After resisting a highpressure accordion salesman, private lessons were arranged. A move to California during Jim’s high school years seemed to halt his accordion career, but fate stepped in once more. Jim’s father actually saw in the Long Beach paper, “Wanted: Accordion player.” I ask you… how many times have you ever seen that? Jim earned his way through college playing at Knott’s Berry Farm as a street musician. In 1972 he met up with (by chance?) a saxophone player by way of a 3x5 card posted on a bulletin board and they went “on the road” playing at Holiday Inns all over the Midwest. After over 35 years, they’re still together along with a guitarist and a drummer that were added in 1975. Jim’s not a one-man band; he’s a one man orchestra. “It’s truly amazing what electronics, computers and MIDI have done for the accordion. Acoustic purists may turn their noses up at all this stuff but the audiences love it,” says Jim. You can contact Jim at 714-7776667 or [email protected] ▲ 19 The Steve Balich Polka Band 25 years at cAF Steve Sr. is one of the originators of the festival who, along with Clifton Buck-Kauffman and our own Jim Boggio, pioneered this event in 1991. Steve was instrumental in helping Clifton book some of the headliners we’ve enjoyed over the years after Jim passed away, including artists such as Dick Contino, Chuck Berger, Tony Lovello and resounding hit accordionist, Alex Meixner. The Steve Balich Sr. Polka Band has recorded three hit recordings. If you love Italian music, you’ll love these: “Our Golden Years,” “Steve Balich Sr. Plays All Italian,” and “Steve Balich Sr. Plays All Italian, Vol. II,” with no duplications. Band members include: Steve Balich Jr. & Lindy Mantova accordion; Scott VonHeim drums; Art Wood trumpet & trombone; and Jim Gilman keyboard. ▲ Polkapalooza Tent A huge wooden dance floor is provided for your dancing enjoyment. Polkas, waltzes, cha-chas, tangos, western swing, you name ’em, we play ’em (unless you name disco, in which case, shame on you.) The band has been together for more than ten years. They play family fairs, polka festivals, nightclubs, birthday parties, bar mitzvahs, senior centers, music festivals, beer festivals and Oktoberfests. Based in San Francisco, they have played as far afield as Milwaukee, Pittsburg and New York City. The band always entertains. The band personnel is: Big Lou (accordion and vocals) - Lou has played with such bay area notables as the Melotones, the Stir-Ups, Thee Hellhounds, and Polkacide. She founded Those Darn Accordions. Lou cut her musical teeth playing country-western piano in Austin, Texas. She loves most music, but has a soft spot for the ethnic variety, especially Eastern European polkas and French waltzes. A native of Hollywood, she also treasures movie music, and loves to play songs from the wide screen. David Golia (bass and vocals, also known as “Dave the guy who carries the accordion”) - David has played everything from heavy metal (Holy Mary) to blues (The Hurricanes) to C&W. His favorite musical experiences were his stints with Dino Valente and the Rayons. David is happiest when wearing a funny hat. David Phillips (steel guitar) - David is as versatile as a steel guitar player can be. He has played jazz, calypso, blues, rock, folk music and oh yeah, Country and Western. He has played with such notables as Tom Waits, Peter Rowan, Shelby Lynne, and almost everybody else. Gene Reffkin (drums) - Gene Reffken has a BA in music from New York University, thus making drummer jokes no fun at all for the rest of the band. Gene also plays with the Paul Dresher Ensemble and has played Carnegie Hall. Greg Stephens (trombone) - Greg plays with Tango Number Nine, and is a veteran of the Extra Action Marching Band, the As Is Brass Band, and the Berkeley Opera, among others. Greg took his trombone with him on a pleasure trip to Morocco. He carried it with him on the back of a camel so that he could jam with local musicians. Annelise Zamula (saxophone) - Annelise’s background is jazz, swing and classical. She plays with Noertker’s Moxie, the Montclair Women’s Big Band, and the Moodswing Orchestra. Annelise, like Imelda Marcos, is fond of good shoes. ▲ Polkapalooza! 21 The Johnny koenig Polka Band Johnny Koenig is a high energy, young star accordion player in the polka field, now living in the Pittsburgh area. The style that Johnny plays is Americanized folk music based with roots in Europe. This style of music appeals to all ages and a broad audience. Born and raised in New York City, Johnny grew up with polka music, first learning from his father who had his own band for many years. This is where Johnny first learned accordion. He picked up his first accordion at age five, and took private lessons from a local music teacher for a few years. Johnny, only seven years old at the time, had the honor of singing with America’s Polka King Frankie Yankovic at an event in New York City. He began performing professionally at age fifteen, taking over for his father after he passed away. During his years in high school, he played trumpet in the school’s concert band. Johnny released his first professional recording in 2007 entitled “The New Kid In Town”. In 2008, this CD made the first round GRAMMY consideration ballot in four categories. In 2007, he produced and arranged the music for VerbBallet’s “Polka Madness” dance repertoire. Johnny was interviewed in the movie documentary “Polka! The Movie” which is repeatedly shown on TV Slovenia in Europe. During his time in Cleveland, Johnny also served as a trustee on the Board of Directors for the National Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame. He is currently working on his second full-length CD, as well as recording with various musicians in rock, folk, R&B, and jazz. A significant amount of his time is also dedicated to working as a full-time paramedic, saving countless lives. Johnny Koenig: Press 18 year old Johnny Koenig is indeed the “New Kid In Town” having moved to Cleveland from the New York City area in 2006. His fine accordion work is enhanced by Bob Kravos (recording engineer) on accordion fills, bass, piano, and solovox; Norm Kobal on sax; Mark Habat on drums and Frank Okicki on banjo and guitar. Special guest performers include Canada’s Polka King Walter Ostanek and Joey “The Cow-Polka King” Miskulin. Johnny began playing music at age five with the influence from his late dad John, an entertainer and promoter in the New York area for many years. — Tony Petkovsek - WELW Radio “Cleveland has been noted as the polka capitol of the country and it’s lived up to its billing,” Koenig tells Benson. “It’s been great. I’ve met a lot of people and some talented musicians. It’s just a great hobby and a great way to meet people and have a good time. You’re getting paid for one of the most fun things to do.” — John Benson - Cleveland Plain Dealer Johnny Koenig has been playing accordion since the age of five and is looking to change how people think about the genre. ▲ 22 Silver Jubilee Grand Finale produced and directed by Maggie Martin 5:45 to 7:00 on Sunday featuring: Skyler Fell, Dan Cantrell, Sergiu Popa, Cory Pesaturo, Kep Protopopov, Paul Rogers, Sourdough Slim, Stas Venglevski, Sam Reider, the Great Morgani, Ginny Mac and the Mad Maggies band with special friends. What began as a one night stand at a local SF watering hole has morphed into a kaleidoscopic configuration of accordionists. Ranging from a line up of up to 17 to the current 4 piece ensemble, TDA has continued to push the boundaries of what is possible when a traditional instrument like the accordion is run head on into rock and roll. To commemorate the 25th season of the Cotati Accordion Festival, TDA is assembling many of the original members that performed at their legendary shows in the early days of the CAF. One original member, the late, great Clyde Forsman, will not be able to join them, but will surely be there in spirit. Expected to join the current TDA line up of Paul Rogers, Suzanne Garramone and Lewis Wallace are Bill Schwartz, Big Lou, J. Raoul Brody, Tom Torriglia, Ron Muriera, Ron Borelli and Art Peterson. TDA will be dusting off their blazing renditions of such tunes as Viva Las Vegas, The Devil Went Down To Georgia and We’re An Accordion Band along with some fan favorite originals. Dubbed the “Delta King” and awarded the “Best Zydeco Band” in 2007 by Bay Area Blues Society, Mark’s been playing his traditional style of zydeco music since the age of 13. His music is best described as infectious — once the band starts playing, the crowd doesn’t want him to stop, yelling “Play One More” over and over! Mark sings in both English & Creole French. We pride ourselves in being able to give the crowd a variety, zydeco, blues, R&B and even a lil’ country. Followers of this music loves the excitement it brings and the joy they get from dancing to it, be it a waltz, two-step, line dance or a down home flat-foot zydeco! We play festivals, Mardi Gras, weddings, anniversaries, private parties, corporate events, New Years and/or whatever you like. We will perform to whatever the theme. The moment this award winning Western showman steps into the spotlight, it’s apparent to everyone that they’re in for a rollicking good time. Ten gallon funny-man Sourdough Slim transports us to a whimsical world where vaudevillian camp and cowboy lore intermingle to produce grins galore. Slim, aka Rick Crowder, is a well traveled veteran of stages ranging from The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering to The Lincoln Center’s Roots of American Music Festival and the Carnegie Hall Folk Festival. His fastpaced stage show finds him crooning Western classics, playing accordion, guitar and harmonica, dancing a jig, twirling a lariat, dishing out hilarious comedic sketches and letting loose with some absolutely mind boggling yodeling. His truly astounding yippie-ti-yi style won him the Academy of Western Artists 2001 Will Rogers Award for “Yodeler of the Year” and 2009, 2010 and 2011 nomination for “Entertainer of the Year” from the Western Music Association. As Cowboy Magazine editor Darrell Arnold puts it, “There’s no one else out there like Sourdough Slim. An accordion playing, yodeling, tongue-in-cheek, cowboy-dressed entertainer deluxe. Catchy, uplifting, irresistible, jolly fun.” The East Bay Express calls him, “The most entertaining cowboy singer-yodeleraccordionist extant!” Via Magazine heralds him “Entertainer extraordinaire!” Born in Hollywood, California, Rick Crowder spent much of his childhood on a family cattle ranch in the Sierra foothills. But as he explains, “my true calling as a cowboy was not on the range but rather, on the stage.” A childhood cut-up, he developed his comic character, honed his musical and yodeling skills and garnered the nick name “Slim” while performing in several traveling western bands in the 1970’s and 80’s. Sourdough Slim emerged in 1988 when he came up with the idea to meld his experiences into a solo act based on continued on page 46 45 FOOD VENDORS IN THE PARK Motor dude Zydeco F1A & F1B: Petaluma Poultry Chicken and salad selections +. MENTAL NOTES draws from folk traditions where the accordion and fiddle play tightly-knit unison melodies against a lush & percussive DADGAD-tuned guitar. MENTAL NOTES plays for contra-dances, cèilidhs, folk festivals, and regularly delights unsuspecting pub crowds with effervescent tunes. Playing fiddle since her early childhood, Rebecca Richman has embraced the Irish fiddle as her own. She recently added English Concertina to the mix. She also shreds Old Time and French tunes with ease. Accordionist, recording artist and Celtic music teacher, Roxanne Oliva has appeared on over 30 albums, a host of musical styles, with various luminaries including Paddy Keenan and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s Tom Waits. Michael Harmon, rich with performing and sound-engineering experience, can currently be seen playing for square and contra dances, driving the beat of Irish sessions, and delighting friends with a heartwarming song around a campfire. roxanneoliva.bandcamp.com/ album/mental-notes ▲ 53 Motor dude Zydeco Accordion Student Stage New for 2015 by Sheri Mignano Crawford, Student Stage Coordinator It all started with a young accordion student Jim Boggio. The festival’s main stage in the plaza provides great entertainment from the current generation of talented accordionists. We are proud to announce that the festival supports the future generation of accordionists as well. On the 25th anniversary of the festival, for the first time, students can compete for scholarship awards. We hope this starts a brand new tradition in Cotati. Over the years, the festival has supported many youth organizations and now each of us can contribute to the young accordionist’s music lessons and studies. The festival and its sponsors encourage you to show your support by attending the competition (between 9:30 am to noon Saturday, August 22, 2015) at the social hall of Church of the Oaks (300 yards from the polka tent). No ticket is necessary and anyone can hear these talented students. If you’d like to contribute to the Student Stage Scholarship Fund, please specify “CASS” donation on your contribution. Many generous individuals, including accordion companies such as Petosa, have invested in it. The winner(s) will be announced Sunday, August 23 at approximately 2:05 from the Main Stage. I’d like to thank this year’s judges who all started their accordion lessons as kids: Xavier de la Prade, John Covarelli, and Anjali Crawford. If you would like to be involved with the Student Stage and help it thrive, please contact Sheri Mignano Crawford: CotatiAccordionStudentStage@ yahoo.com ▲ Thank you Sheri - ED 54 Il Sole - Steve Albini & Tatiana Semichastnaya The Italian phrase “passione e fuoco,” “passion and fire,” truly describes the music of singer/musician Steve Albini and musician Tatiana Semichastnaya. A two-time first prize winner of Bayan competition in the Republic of Moldova, Stas is a graduate of the Russian Academy of Music in Moscow where he received his Masters Degree in Music under the tutelage of the famed Russian Bayanist, Friedrich Lips. In 1992 he immigrated to the United States. Stas is an accordionist, a Musician, an Arranger, an Entertainer and a Teacher. Stas’ repertoire includes his original compositions, a broad range of classical, contemporary and ethnic music. He has toured extensively as a soloist throughout the former Soviet Union, Canada, Europe, and the United States, including numerous performances with Doc Severinsen, Steve Allen and with Garrison Keillor on the Prairie Home Companion Show. Additionally, he has performed with symphony orchestras throughout the United States. He performed the world premiere of Concerto No. 2 by Anthony Galla-Rini and also the world premiere of Bayan and Beyond, composed for Stas by Dan Lawitts. He is a regular participant the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s Arts in Community Education Program (ACE); has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra; has done television commercials and performed in theater productions; produced numerous recordings including a transcription of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite for Bayan as well as one of original compositions. He has published several books of original compositions. Stas founded Accordion XXI Century Series in 2010 so that the Midwest audiences can experience the amazing range of the Accordion and Bayan by bringing gifted artists from all over the world. In a concert setting, these gifted 56 musicians share their skills and cultures to provide the audience with a unique musical experience. The performances feature the Accordion or Bayan in solo presentation and, when possible, in concert with other instruments. The brilliant artistry and musical virtuosity of Stas afford an expanded dimension in music and an innovative musical adventure to the audience. The Accordion In the accordion class of instruments are the piano accordion, bayan, concertina, bandoneon, button box, et al. The concept is universal and each culture has adapted the instrument to its own requirements. The genesis of the accordion is thought to be the Chinese Sheng, which dates back to around the 13th century B.C. The Bayan is an accordion that was developed in Russia in the very late eighteen hundreds. It differs from most accordions developed in western Europe primarily in the detail of its construction. These details make the Bayan a richer sounding instrument with a wider range of notes. It shines its best in the classic repertoire. Stas Venglevski performs on the Petosa Concert Series Cathedral Bayan SV developed by Petosa Accordions in Seattle, WA, and custom crafted specifically for Stas. It has 61 treble notes and bass converter for either 120 Stradella bass or 55 free bass. The Cathedral Bayan SV has fifteen treble registers giving it incredible range and large spectrum of sounds. The left hand is a specially designed Russian system offering the sound quality of a Cathedral Organ pedal tone. When you see Mr. Venglevski perform, ask him to play Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. Then, just close your eyes and listen. ▲ The Amigos “This accordion-based group is updated Americana at its best. He was responsible for the set up and teardown of the Charlie Brown beer booth as well as beer pourer extraordinaire.
