MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Happy Summer !
The summer season, filled with warmer temperatures and time off from school brings back fond
memories as a child! The wonderful weather and longer days is a great opportunity to get out of the
house and do a favorite activity, such as taking a walk or getting out and playing in the park with
your children. The Ojai Recreation Department offers numerous activities for you and your family
to partake in. Please take a moment to review the summer brochure; maybe you’ll find a new interest such as rowing at
Lake Casitas, horseback riding or our Legos Camp that you’ll want to explore this summer!
Since the last brochure, I am happy to report that the following projects have been completed during the last four months
at the Ojai Recreation Department!
• The Boyd Center renovation project; the men’s and women’s restrooms and exterior hallway in front of the building
were completely renovated making them ADA (American with Disabilities Act) compliant;
• The Boyd Center interior hallway and kitchen repainted;
• The Boyd Center interior hallway new flooring installed;
• The Boyd Center exterior was pressure washed;
• Stucco repair and repainting of the John Martin Gym exterior ;
• A new awning installed over the main entrance of the John Martin Gym;
• New carpet at gym entrance;
• The gymnasium floor was repaired and refinished;
• The gym drinking fountain re-located to the gym entrance.
Funding for the capital improvement projects above came from the City of Ojai’s General Fund and CDBG (Community
Development Block Grant). In addition, staff has been very busy and more projects will be on tap for the remainder of
this fiscal year and next year which include: renovating the outdoor picnic area and remodeling the outdoor restroom
building to be ADA compliant. Funding for these projects will be from CDBG, Recycling Grants and other local grants.
On behalf of the City of Ojai, I appreciate the communities’ patience and understanding as we complete these exciting
projects and much needed facility improvements!
As always, I have an open door policy, and encourage you to stop by to share your ideas and thoughts on how we can better
serve you. From our family at the Recreation Department to your family, we wish you and your family a safe and fun summer!

Instructor Highlights
Summer / Fall 2009
John Horwick
John Horwick has been working at the Ojai Recreation Department and has refereed High School soccer
with CIF since 1984. According to John, he has played soccer since the age of 8 on a proper team. But,
started playing in the streets of London at a much earlier age, when they used tennis balls and even rocks!
John came to the United States in 1970 after watching the World Cup in Mexico and traveled north to the
United States. In 1971, he returned to England and came back to the U.S. in 1972. Then, after two years
of traveling through South America and Africa, he went back to England until finally coming back to the
United States in 1976. John coached soccer in England, Japan and the United States. He was also the Sports Editor of the
Brazil Herald when he lived in Rio de Janeiro. Nancy and his young daughter Kate came to Ojai in 1981. John moved to Ojai
in 1981, with his wife and began playing on the Ojai Condors Soccer Club in 1981. John was an excellent center midfielder
that moved the ball well and created plays. He retired from playing with the club in 2006, but remains as President of the
Ojai Condors.
John Horwick “has been an excellent mentor for young referees in our Youth 5-A-Side Soccer Program! He has always had
a passion for the game of soccer and is a soccer nut”!
Rick Thompson
Rick Thompson’s love for tennis started at an early age, and he has been teaching tennis now for over thirty
years. He began teaching at the age of 16 at a tennis camp in Germany, and later taught at the Kramer Club
in Los Angeles where he worked with top juniors including Pete Sampras. He was the Head Pro at a large
indoor club in Memphis, Tn., and was the Head Pro at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club for 9 years. Rick has
spent the last decade teaching through the Ojai Recreation Department, and has developed programs for
adults and juniors. The World Team Tennis Program offers a fun, competitive league for juniors and adults, and currently
has over 100 players enrolled.
“For over 6 years, our family has had the awesome privilege of participating in Rick’s classes, private lessons and World
Team Tennis program for youth and adults. Not only has the quality of instruction, variety of drills, and teaching methods
been exceptional, but his ability to identify and solve individual problems tremendously increased the level of our games.
He has instilled in each of us a deep, life-long love for the wonderful game of tennis.”
Melissa White:
Melissa White is honored and privileged to facilitate horsemanship through the Ojai Recreation Department.
She looks forward to seeing you soon for her horsemanship class, fun camps or a personal trail ride. These
opportunities are available for people to ride, learn and enjoy all kinds of things connected with horses.
Her role is to provide instruction in riding and horsemanship, instill proper care of the animal, and promote
the ideals of sportsmanship, citizenship and loyalty, thereby cultivating strength of character and selfdiscipline. She is a third generation resident of the valley and has been in the field of education for 30 years.
Horses have been her passion since she was a young girl. She has joined her educational background with her love of horses
to provide participants with a positive horsemanship experience. She looks forward to seeing you at the ranch.

small groups to make a film and each student
will experience all aspects of production. Under the guidance of professional filmmakers,
students will pitch, plan, shoot, edit, screen,

Skate Park Day Trips!
VENTURA COUNTY FUSION SOCCER CAMP
Here’s your opportunity to ride a few of the
local skate parks in Ventura, Los Angeles and
Santa Barbara Counties! All participants must
provide their own sunscreen, skate boards,
protective gear, water and lunch. All skaters
must wear helmets, knee and elbow pads at all
parks – no exceptions! Please register early as
space is limited.
The Recreation Department and the Ventura County Fusion have joined forces to offer a unique
opportunity to residents of the Ojai Valley. Ventura County Fusion is a new men’s soccer franchise that will combine high level soccer with family entertainment beginning May 2007, featuring players formerly with U.S. national youth teams and top college players. Fusion’s coaches
are licensed professionals who will teach basic soccer skills according to the developmental ages
of the children, placing emphasis on learning through fun games and giving lots of playing time
and setting individual targets for measurable progress in skill development, assisted by star players from the Fusion team. Participants have the bonus of being able to meet their instructors at a
Fusion home game and watch the team in action free of charge.
