Gangsta rap never really took off in Europe, we consume, but have hesitated at productive
involvement. Since adopting the hip-hop culture, European artists generally remain true to the
original intent, avoiding ‘wanna-big-me-self-up’ rhymes rambling on about fast cars, bling, niggas,
bitches and gardening tools, sorry hoes!
The current Hip Hop age has MTV programming featuring spotty pre-pubescents sporting
gang’esq attire and ‘Argos’ bling, arthritically flipping wrists and walking like constipated
chickens proclaiming to be gangsta’s. Moral responsibility for the glorification of the thug, sex,
money and killing people may be placed at the door of any number of those at the helm of
the mainstream media vehicle. Bandwagon jumpers, pushdi malakers, guilty of pillaging a cradle
of reflective urban poetry which Hip Hop strove/strives to promote. Has gansta rap damaged
Hip Hop Culture? “yes and no” say URANAMI.
Luxembourg based Italian Hip Hop act URANAMI feel quite reflective on the whole gansta
rap culture. Stating that in one sense you have to consider the climate in America so musically,
no, but at the same time it does not reflect the true essence of Hip Hop culture.
“Rap is something you do, Hip-Hop is something you live.” KRS-One
Hip Hop was a born in the New York, Bronx district in the early 1970s. Encompassing rapping
(and now singing), dj’ing, break-dancing, and urban art (graffiti). Commercially it became
apparent in 1979 with the Sugarhill gangs hugely successful ‘Rappers Delight’
For URANAMI (Japanese for ‘wave on the shore’), they seek to symbolise the fusion of
numerous musical currents, Jazz, Blues, Rock n’Roll, Funk, Reggae, Electro and Rap, into the
single concept that is URANAMI.
“We never talk about politics, football or women, we always try to talk about what we feel in our lives”
Remaining true to poetic rhyming and metaphorical story telling URANAMI draw inspiration
from all sources “You have to listen to every type of music, we just look to find a good way
to combine our influences, show the people our way to listen to music”. To date a successful
concoction, URANAMI’s first single ‘Basta’, meaning ‘Enough’ went in the Luxembourgish
charts and remained there for 7 months, and in the top ten for over 2. “We’re very happy for
this, we were the first Italian musicians to achieve top ten success here”.
URANAMI was born in 2005, the result of a music project by Edoardo “CICO” Inzolia and
Giorgio “PECCA” Valentini, they have been working together since 1998 under the label 6Mic Productions. After their participation in numerous events including Jam organised by the
emerging Luxembourg chapter of Zulu Nation, the pair took off in different directions. Cico to
Strasbourg and Pecca to Brussels for study. A number of instructive but static collaborations
occurred in their respective locations but none matched the energy acquired from the pair’s
unplanned recordings, it was at this point they decided to concentrate on working together. In
2006, Belgian Thibault ‘T-Bo’ Hanon, talented bass player from a Jazz background, agreed to join
the band completing the line up.
So what does the future hold? Will they be taking Italian Hip Hop to the world stage… It is
by no means a small task with the global dominance of English language entertainment. For
URANAMI the starting point will be at this years Zulu Nation Festival in New York. Zulu
Nation was formed and headed by Hip Hop music pioneer Afrika Bambaataa. The oldest
and largest organisation promoting Hip Hop culture, this year is the 32nd Anniversary (33rd
anniversary of Zulu Nation). They will be sharing a stage with the likes of Jeru the Damaja
(of among other things, Gang Starr fame), Black Sheep (who were one of the first groups to
parody gangsta rap), Beatnuts and Red Clay to name but a few. Representing Italian music
under a Luxembourgish banner they are very excited about the prospect and feel very
honoured. When asked if they think this will be a turning point in their career, URANAMI
remain optimistic ‘we hope so, but we don’t know”
Remaining true to Hip Hop culture, no bling, no bitches, URANAMI have a positive future ahead
of them, pas Basta, one might say!

The base of the music is the combination of melodic, fast and precise bass lines with heavy
groovy drumming and three guitars, to add that dose of rock’n roll energy. Further introduced are sprinklings of unusual notes and a ‘squish’ of feedback. Finally, put with simple
but unique melodies and warm vocals, with occasional passionate outbursts, screams and
shrieks and thus this completes the melting pot that is Couchgrass.
Formed in 2001, they started to get noticed after taking part in the 2003 Emergenza, battle
of the bands competition, where they took 3rd place. They released there first album ‘Motel
Love’ in 2004 and have followed up with their 2nd release ‘King Camden took a Brush and
drowned his Hair in Gasoline’ earlier this year.

How did you get started?
To cut a very long story very short, it was Amandine’s 16th birthday and the cheapest gift Claire
could find for her was a pair of drumsticks (she doesn’t even play drums). For Claire’s birthday
her parents bought her an electric guitar, since Amandine had no money. Soon after that the
two girls met other people who already had instruments and who could actually play them, they
all jammed together and started writing their own songs.

What ingredients do you need to mix together to produce the recipe of your sound?
In a rehearsal room, combine the drums, bass guitar, two guitars (preferably tuned), some
prunes, a squeaky voice, and the most important ingredient: beer. Allow the mixture to steep,
covered, overnight. Next morning, ‘do’ something about the headache, then place the band on a
stage and combine with some sweaty rock fans...from there on, it’s all sweet!
Did your first gig make you hungry for more?
Yeah definitely, we wanted to play our second gig in front of people we weren’t related to. Thank
God it worked out quite well.
What’s the biggest ‘cock up’ to date?
‘Cock up’, indeed! We played in a small club in the south of Luxembourg a few years ago opening for some foreign bands who came with a bus full of fans. The venue was an old strip club
and somehow forgot to remove the famous pole. Some very drunk guy came on stage during
our encore and reminded us what that pole was there for. Let’s just say that we got to see more
than we wanted...

What is it that inspires you to make your music/sound?
We started listening to music at a very young age; some of us even started playing instruments
when they were kids. So music was there all the time and accompanied us through our teenage
years.
Everything that moves us or has some kind of impact in our life inspires us and is reflected in
our music. That might sound very cheesy, but we think it’s like that for most bands. We can say
or do whatever we want in our songs, which is something you can’t always do in your daily life.
What would be the icing on the cake?
Like every band we wouldn’t mind getting signed by a label who could help us reach a broader
audience. We’ll see what will come along and during that time we’ll enjoy some real icing on a
real cake.
How will you be remembered?
I hope we won’t be remembered for being the one band whose gear breaks down during
concerts. Some bands are known for wildly trashing their instruments on stage, our stuff just
brakes. It’s kind of pathetic.
No seriously, we would like to be remembered as a band which loves to perform and always
tries to put up a great show. And of course we’d mainly want our future grandchildren to dance
to our music.

Describe your music as if it were a fine wine.
As any fine wine, you can have some Couchgrass with fish or meat, before, during and after
breakfast, lunch or dinner, before having a hot bath, while taking a dump, reading a paper or
making love to your old lady. The older, the more tasty!

All we know is Dirk, our drummer, doesn’t think much about underwear, Thierry and Claude
are a bit shy about the matter, Amandine usually wears the same underwear but changes the
pads from time to time and Claire has her lucky sailor-anchor patterned panties.
Digestive! What does Luxembourg mean to you?
It’s our homeland and we’ve all have lovely memories where we’ve grown up. Most of us live in
big cities now, so we are thankful that we grew up in more calm villages where we were able to
play in the outdoors.

[boe-joe-lay] is always released the 3rd Thursday of
the month regardless of when the harvest begins.
The Beaujolais region is just north of Lyon (France)
and is home to some 4000 grape growers contained in
an space of land 34 miles long and 7-9miles wide.
It is mandatory that Beaujolais grapes are
handpicked, this and champagne are the only yields
required to do this.
Gamay noir à Jus Blanc is the only grape permitted
for the making of Beaujolais wine.
Beaujolais Nouveau is not permitted to come
from grapes grown in the 10 crus, only from the
appellations of Beaujolais and Beaujolais villages
The process used to make Beaujolais Nouveau is a
wine making process called carbonic maceration
(whole berry fermentation). The technique preserves
the fresh, fruity quality of the wine without extracting
bitter tannins from the skin. This is followed by
Pasteurization so it bypasses malolactic fermentation
(a process where tart malic acid is converted to
softer-tasting lactic acid.)
Beaujolais Nouveau is meant to be drunk young,
i.e. before the following May, although in excellent
vintages (like 2000) the wine can last up until the
following harvest.
Beaujolais Nouveau should be served slightly chilled
(13 degrees), it is more refreshing and generally
disguises somewhat the generally foul taste
Approximately 1/3 of the entire Beaujolais region
crop is sold as Beaujolais Nouveau every year that’s
some 45,000,000 litres.
It is probably one of the world’s biggest marketing
scams; but a great excuse for a piss up!

“The fearsome, word-andthought-defying banality of evil”
happens over and over every day
somewhere or other, sending back
its now distant echoes through the
sanitised filter of the media image.
Utopias gone astray, political and/or
religious forms of authoritarianism,
repression and violence on minds
and bodies melt into the magma of
current affairs. As an alternative to
prevalent information, artists are
raising the question of their role,
the scope of their engagement.
As actual players rather than
witnesses, they ensure a form of
transmission that goes beyond
textual and literal demands. Lida
Abdul (Afghanistan) and Tania
Bruguera (Cuba) respectively
engage in a reflection on their
country’s situation, and tackle
performative art head on, bringing
their body into play and putting a
political slant on what they have
to say. Between the experience
of exile and regular returns home,
they address the question of
one’s roots, one’s cultural identity,
displacement, and take on a role
of player-cum-transmitter that
extends well beyond the context of
their own country. Performances
or installations, whatever the
preferred device, Lida Abdul and
Tania Bruguera break with the
distancing of images; we are
destabilized, disturbed, and flip for
a while into a cathartic, albeit pretty
artificial experience. Here for the
first time in a joint exhibition, they
stress the importance, now more
than ever, of questioning images,
casting doubt on and subverting
the dominant and official rhetoric.
Emily Jacir and Renaud-Auguste
Dormeuil, each in their own way,
carry on this incitement to vigilance,
this questioning of the notion of
commitment. Disregarding frontiers
and periods, their reflection on
the refugee figure evokes control
and constraints brought to bear on
people and bodies, separation and

and dance is a strong inspiration
for Anu Sistonen, choreographer
of TIMELINE. Her cooperation
with the charismatic cellist, André
Mergenthaler, started two years ago
and their common work brings an
intensive and powerful experience
to the stage. TIMELINE is a journey
through different periods of time.
Danced by four women, it brings out
the atmosphere of certain moments
in time and develops a few typical
features of each chosen period. This
journey takes us first to a period long
ago when people had lots of time.
They had time just for being. Nothing
suits the cello better than the baroc
music of this period. Then follows our
present time. Today is the opposite,
we don’t have any time. A vicious
circle where overstressed people
forget what is important in life. At
the end, we go to the future. What is
there? We can only guess... hope...
believe in something beautiful.

Last action in paradise...
So the smoking ban is now in full swing in designated areas by law. One of ‘those’ areas affected is
the campus at my high school. Now being a smoker “am I bothered?”, no, to be honest I couldn't
care less. First off, it's my last year in school, so it's not something that I'm going to have to deal with
for long and secondly, I'm way too preoccupied to embark in a game of hide and ‘smoke’ with
campus security during the morning break, (the only time we're not permitted to leave campus).
Naturally though, this being my final year, I’m not averse to causing a little mayhem and breaking a
few laws it’s in par with the course.

I'm already looking forward to the various traditional events coming up this year such as Saint
Nicholas Day, which involves terrorising the school with painted faces while drunk and of course the
annual post exams trip to the inhibition free zone that is Lloret de Mar which involves terrorising the
Spanish peninsula with painted faces while drunk. (Evading faculty members and the dreaded Mosos
d'Esquadre is a prerequisite).

Alongside the customary annual events, my comrades and I have been devising other plans to get
the ‘maximum’ out of the year ahead. This includes the signatory campaign to leave a lasting
reminder of ourselves at our beloved school. My French teacher told us about one group of
graduating students who somehow managed to organise an array of farm animals overnight to
greet pupils the next day. This included a full grown cow (don’t ask me where the animals came
from). Now that is something that will be remembered and the benchmark to which standards need
to be met!
WORKSHOPS
In between lessons recently, a classmates was rugby tackled through a wall (literally) and you could
feel the disappointment that such an ‘offence’ had to happen so early in the year (incredibly, no one
was punished for the incident).
There's something about a period of time
coming to an end that makes people feel
obligated to go mental. It's as if they're afraid
that they haven't had enough fun or destroyed
enough property during the allocated time and
so need to cram everything into the short period
that's left. I suppose it’s in part that great feeling
of not having to give thought to the consequences.
So, whilst we are working hard at school and giving
serious thought to university applications, we are also
convening in local bars and pursuing deep conversations
which lean towards the upcoming extracurricular events, the
kind that send brewery stocks flying.

Musel-Pikes v Heffingen, 18h00
It’s been a relatively good year in sporting terms for Luxembourg. Frank
Schleck finished eleventh in the Tour de France. Which became tenth
after the Tour de Drug Test disqualified Flloyd “I produced testoterone
levels comparable to a full grown elephant after drinking beer” Landis.
Then at this summers European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg,
David Fiegen finished second in the 800 meters final, the first ever Euro
medal for a Luxembourger. Quite the mini success story if you consider
the last Luxembourger to win an athletics medal at international level
was Josy Barthel in the Helsinki Olympics 1952 when he won gold in the
1500 meters, and for Frank Schleck taking the highest placement in the
Tour de France since Charly Gaul, who won it in 1958.
There has also been a victory of sorts for the senior national men’s
football team. I can’t think of any other team that causes fans more
grief than the Red Lions. No, not even Newcastle United can compete.
It’s been eleven long years since they last won an official international
back in 1995 with the 1-0 defeat of Malta. Since then it’s been one
embarrassing defeat after another. Some of the results can be exempt,
but I paid good money to see Luxembourg crash and burn in a 4-0 home
defeat against Liechtenstein, Liechtenstein!!! (the result was the same
in the return game). The few hundred or so fans who were seated in
M-Block vacated their seats in protest by the third goal. Only to be told
by stadium security and police to either leave the stadium or return to
their seats. Of course, they did the latter in traditional non-confrontational
way, just in time to witness the fourth goal. After the game a number of
fans gathered outside the stadium gates to make protest about the latest
shambles. Head coach Guy Hellers apologised but the game had that
‘now or never’ feeling about it and to say the fans were disappointed
would be a gross understatement.
These scenes are to become a distant memory, we hope! Red Lions
supporters are again filled with hope and anticipation. Guy Hellers has
whipped his team into shape and the continued introduction of young
players has breathed new life into the squad. Recent results during
qualifications for Euro 2008 have suggested that their time may finally
come. The ‘Mini World Cup’, organised just before Germany 2006 saw
them play against Germany, Portugal and Ukraine. Results aside, you
can not put into numbers the value of that experience for the team. The
recent, slim, 0-1 defeat to Holland further showed the progress they had
made. Furthermore hosting the Under-17 European Championships
and a string of strong performances, including a recent victory against
Saarbrücken and a draw against Standard Liège has revitalised
Luxembourgish football and its supporters.
Although, work still needs to be done. There was that recent hiccup
against Bulgaria, were they only had themselves to blame and now
two games on the horizon against Albania. It’s been a long time since
Luxembourg have looked this good. Eleven years to be exact...
