Chamber offers new monthly networking event
In response to a recent membership survey in which you said you wanted more opportunities to network, the Chamber has
chosen the first Thursday of the month to hold a Business BEFORE Hours. Held from 8:00-9:30am, the event will be
hosted by members vis-à-vis Business After Hours.
Would you like to host a BBH? Contact the Chamber at [email protected]. There is no cost to host
or attend a BBH. Because of the popularity of the networking events and the waiting list, hosts may not have held a BBH or a
BAH in the past 24 months. This new program is a result of the recent membership survey and will give more members an
opportunity to showcase their business as well as an additional monthly networking event.
Ohio Auditor presents at luncheon
Dave Yost, Ohio’s Auditor, presented to familiar faces at the Chamber’s May Third
Thursday luncheon. Yost previously held positions as Delaware County auditor and
prosecutor before being elected to the state post.
The office has three main duties, the busiest of which is responsibility for auditing
the over 5800 government subdivisions in Ohio. From municipalities to parks districts, the auditor’s office ensures internal controls and compliance of any entity
that is taxpayer-funded. The office is also engaged in “bending the cost curve of government dollars down”, as articulated by the auditor. Through the use of performance audits, Mr. Yost’s office suggests implementation of best practices to lower
costs and stretch funding. The auditor’s office is also charged with investigating
fraud as it relates to misappropriation of tax dollars. The most recent high profile
example is the investigation of allegations that the Columbus City School District
used “scrubbing” to inflate census and test scores. Auditor Yost explained that the
job of his office is to investigate and present all evidence to the prosecutor of the
appropriate jurisdiction.
The auditor’s office recently launched an application for the iPhone that encourages and
makes it easy for citizens to report the misuse of tax dollars anywhere in Ohio. The app is fully integrated to allow photos, tracking of the anonymous complaints and a news section to
stay abreast of what’s happening at the auditor’s office.
Thank you to Auditor Yost and his staff for addressing our membership.

Richwood Banking winner of ‘Top 50 Workplaces’
Values, vision and security. These were the top three criteria of an extensive employer survey led by Columbus CEO Magazine and WBNS-10TV last fall. The two entities
teamed up with WorkplaceDynamics LLC of Exton, Pa., to identify private and public
organizations in Central Ohio that are viewed by their employees as a great place to
work. In all, the list was narrowed down to 850 businesses who were marketed to and
encouraged to participate in the evaluation.
For the “2014 Top Workplaces,” 79 for-profit, nonprofit and government employers
with a combined total of 31,247 employees completed the entire examination process
set by WorkplaceDynamics to be considered for the Top Workplaces designation.
The surveys employees took were intended to measure qualities, such as company
leadership, communications, career opportunities, working environment, managerial relationships, pay and benefits.
The Richwood Banking Company made the top 25 in the small organizations sector.
“It is an honor to know your employees are enjoying this journey as we evolve into the future within our industry. We continue to grow and expand and it’s our teamwork, strong values and dedication to our customers that make it happen,”
Chad Hoffman, CEO and President of Richwood Bank said. Hoffman continued, “The entire Columbus area covers hundreds, if not thousands, of thriving and larger businesses. To have Richwood Bank recognized while we are focused on our
smaller communities north of the city is a major accomplishment. We are very proud to accept this award.”

Congratulations on this amazing recognition. Those who are familiar with Richwood are not surprised at the honor.
Be prepared for changes coming to BWC
Changes to Incentive/Premium Discount Program Enrollment Deadlines
In continuation of the “Billion Back” campaign from the summer of 2013, the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation
(BWC) has announced additional changes to come this year and in 2015.
A “Billion Back” was a one-time dividend released to eligible private and public taxing districts equating to $1 billion in
June 2013 and completed in October 2013. It was made possible because the financially strong Ohio State Insurance Fund
exceeded the target funding ratio of assets to liabilities established by the BWC Board in 2008.
Included in the Billion Back campaign was a plan for the BWC to transition to a prospective billing system that will align
it with standard industry practices. The transition is effective for the July 1, 2015 policy year for private employers.
To implement, BWC has changed the incentive/premium discount program enrollment deadlines. For private employers, the enrollment deadlines are listed below for the 2015 policy year:

how participation in a program will impact your costs as well as how these programs can be stacked together to achieve the
maximum savings available for your organization.
Don’t miss your opportunity to be evaluated for participation in an incentive/premium discount program. Discounts vary
by program but are as high as 53%, which was the maximum discount allowed by BWC for the 2014 policy year.
The time to act is now due to the earlier enrollment deadlines for the 2015 policy year. Take this free, no-obligation opportunity to explore your options today!

Chamber recognizes
volunteer contributions
A chamber of commerce is only as
impactful, influential, intelligent,
relevant and resourceful as the volunteer members who come forward
to help serve its mission. These men
and women from all sectors of the
membership understand that their
contribution is vital to fulfilling the
mission and obligations of the organization. On April 30, the chamber held its first annual volunteer
recognition cocktail reception.
Those members who pay it forward
by serving on committees, task forces, and other
efforts, gathered at Black Wing Shooting Center (who, of course, offered their meeting room,
demonstrating the reason for the event!). It was a
simple event with heartfelt recognition by chamber
staff for all the support and engagement given so
freely. Below is a list of the volunteers who give
their time, talent and resources to make their
chamber better for all members.
Thank you to Rex Gore at Black Wing for opening
his doors. Food was catered by Northstar American Concessions.

The most comprehensive research study to date on the relationship between chamber membership and consumer confidence shows a marked effect for both large and small business. The caveat, however is that the positive outcomes only occur then the consumer knows that a business is a chamber member. As a member of the Delaware Area Chamber of Commerce in good standing, you are encouraged to use the chamber’s logo on your email signature, website, stationery and
marketing materials. Call the chamber for an electronic version of our logo.

Outlook 101
At the May B.E.D. and Breakfast, Jason Comstock, Clarity Technology Solutions, offered a presentation on the magical things Outlook can do for users. The Rules Wizard function uses folders to sort
mail through the creation of “rules” that
serve as a filtering process. Jason demonstrated a way to view an entire thread of conversation that involves multiple participants
in one conversation; sharing your calendar;
creating a consistent signature line for all
members of your team; and using Doodle.com to poll multiple participants in a
meeting– whew! Like magic!
Thanks to Jason for eliminating the mystery
and removing the fear of using Outlook.
Member initiates “concierge” automotive repair service
Oxford Automotive, 5339 Maloney road in Delaware, recently began to offer
a service unique to the small, home town auto repair business. In addition to
their long-standing offer of courtesy rental cars, Oxford will now pick up your car
at your convenience, repair it and bring it right
back to you!
Raising the bar for customer service is always
a good move for increasing customer loyalty.

School district receives award
Delaware City Schools received the Auditor of
State Award with Distinction for excellence in financial reporting and a clean audit for FY 2013. The
award is received by just 5% of political subdivisions
in the state. In order to qualify for the auditor's highest award, Delaware City Schools had to submit a
Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR)
and have no errors or findings in the most recent
audit.
Treasurer Melissa Lee said the award recognizes
the district's commitment to share financial information and be accountable to taxpayers. The district
is particularly excited to be recognized because this
was the first year Delaware City Schools completed a
CAFR, which is optional for school districts. For
more information on the Auditor of State Award,

Middle school meets industrial park
On May 9, the Quality of Life task force again offered local middle school
students tours of the industrial park. The
tours represented the task force’s initiative
to suggest careers in manufacturing as industry struggles to fill current positions and
anticipates shortages. The industrial park
and the career opportunities it offers are not
on the radar of most middle and high school
students. The task force gave students a
taste of some really cool stuff being done
in manufacturing that require technical,
critical thinking and teamwork skills.
The students toured Federal

Oakland Nursery to kick off the chamber’s
first Before Hours, as the nursery business
kicks into high gear. Thank you to Melissa
and the rest of Oakland Nursery’s
staff for a great start to a new chamber program.

Leadership Delaware Economic Development Day
By: Holly Riley, Ellen Smith, Traci Whittaker, Chris Burden
The 2014 Leadership Delaware County class kicked off their last session
before graduation, Economic Development Day at the Delaware Municipal
Airport, with an overview presentation on local economic development. The
presentation was followed by a panel discussion with representatives from
the public sector: Sean Hughes, City of Delaware, Gus Comstock, Delaware County and Dave Anderson, Liberty Township. The class learned
that with respect to economic development, the public sector is most concerned with upholding the process for development as opposed to the private
sector, which focuses on profitability. Students also learned that the current
trend is toward regionalism, where communities collaborate toward economic development for the region rather than fighting each other for new businesses.
The private sector discussion panel was comprised of Franz Geiger, Polaris Centers of Commerce, Jim Hilz, The Building Industry Association of Central Ohio and Rich Irelan from Dublin Building Systems. Each panelist shared some background in
their areas of expertise as well as their perspectives on key determining factors for economic development in the private sector.
Some of those factors are natural occurrences and others are influenced by available resources, infrastructure, workforce and/
or economic incentives in a given area. Overall, the group agreed that demographic studies are critical in the site selection process, and business expansion typically follows population growth. Overdevelopment, financing challenges and a decreasing
number of younger people choosing construction trades as a career were cited as top concerns.
Students also met Rick Copeland of TechColumbus, which is a company located in Central Ohio that assists entrepreneurs
through financial support, direction, mentor advice and other resources to enable them to successfully develop their businesses. Students next met Kevin Piatt, Operations Supervisor for the Delaware Municipal Airport. Piatt shared that the airport is
open 24 hours a day and sits on 325 acres of land. The airport offers a flight school, airplane rental and a maintenance shop.
The airport is also the home to Jegs’ personal jet, which rests in a 22,000 square foot hanger.
The class learned about the Delaware Area Transit Agency (DATA) public transit system and how it impacts the county’s
economy. DATA’s Ginny Berry shared that 44 percent of riders use the bus for transportation to a worksite. DATA currently
has 21 buses and five fixed routes – four of those are in the city of Delaware. DATAbus is in the middle of creating new routes
and is asking residents to complete a survey at ridedata.com for feedback on what routes would be the most beneficial to residents.
The group next boarded a DATA bus and toured National Lime and Stone Company and Emerson Network Power/
Liebert AC Power – both located near many of the industrial factories on Pittsburgh Drive. National Lime and Stone is a
significant player among stone suppliers in Ohio by supplying much of the stone for new roadways and homes built in Central
Ohio. Every 5-7 days, the quarry blasts large ledges of rock with ammonium nitrate making the big rocks into a smaller, workable size. Over 3 million tons of limestone is blasted every year. The group ended the day with a tour of Emerson Network
Power/Liebert AC Power. Students learned about this dynamic company, which manufactures and distributes critical power for
data centers, communication networks, healthcare and industrial facilities.
Overall, Economic Development Day allowed the Leadership class to gain some inside knowledge on what makes Delaware
County such a leader in development and why it is such a promising place to live and work.

DelawareO.com published its 1,000th community news article earlier this
week, following the news website’s 1 year anniversary in April. Delaware.com was founded as a local news, events and
happenings website for Delaware and Delaware County, OH.
DelawareO.com was created to meet the community’s need for local news for Delaware County residents by Delaware
County residents. The staff consists of 20 community writers from many stages of life, including nine high school students. In their first professional writing positions, student contributors are given the opportunity to develop skills and
build portfolios.
“I am so proud to be able to share our passion with the community,” said business director Stephen Evanko.
The website is not only a local news source for Delaware, but one of the community’s many small businesses. DelawareO.com is funded by local advertisements. Advertising clients help develop young writing talent and contribute to
the local economy, in addition to receiving 13,000 open ears from the DelawareO.com audience.
Founder Rocky VanBrimmer said, “The growth of this site has been incredible. We have gone from one post per week
starting out to 3-5 posts per day now.” Averaging over 800 website hits a day, VanBrimmer is excited to see the website’s following continue to grow.

Each June, the National Safety Council celebrates National Safety Month as a time to bring attention to key safety issues. As
you plan your 2014 safety calendar, please join the Council and thousands of organizations across the country reduce risk of the
following safety issues:
Week 1: Prevent prescription drug abuse
Week 2: Stop slips, trips and falls
Week 3: Be aware of your surroundings
Week 4: Put an end to distracted driving
Bonus week: Summer safety
Reduce risk
The 2014 National Safety Month theme, "Safety: It takes all of us," was inspired by the idea of continuous risk reduction – a key
pillar in the Journey to Safety Excellence. A successful safety program depends on spotting hazards early, evaluating their risk
and removing or controlling them before harm is done. Use this June to find creative ways to engage everyone in reducing risk
in your workplaces. A little effort today has the potential to prevent tragedy tomorrow.
