Over the last 12 months Spraoi has produced original shows throughout Ireland and the UK, our work has been seen by audiences of thousands. But however far we travel, the Spraoi Festival is the anchor point of our year, the backbone of our work. Artists and musicians from 16 countries, and from all over Ireland, will make our ancient city their home this weekend, performing for you, the Spraoi audience. Our biggest production of the year, the Spraoi Parade, is specially conceived and produced for just this event. We are indebted to our funders, sponsors, creative partners, staff and crew, and the hundreds of volunteers who help make the magic happen. From the Hucklebuck to Blaas, from Hollywood to Montana, from the Suir to the Blackwater, this little corner of our island has a tale to tell. Featuring hundreds of costumed performers, floats, and special effects, prepare to be amazed at the largest, outdoor cultural event of the Summer. Any similarities to people alive or dead is intended. PARADE INFORMATION The parade will begin at Johnstown Industrial Estate at 9.30pm and progress via Johns Street, Michael Street, Broad Street, John Roberts Square and Barronstrand Street to its finish on the Quay. Traffic diversions and restrictions will occur as the parade moves along the route. There will be absolutely no parking allowed on the parade route, so please try to leave the car behind. There will be fi xed ambulance points along the route. Our stewards will guide you to these if required. There will be a specially cordoned off viewing area for those with special needs, location to be confirmed closer to the festival. (see www.spraoi.com for updates). For situations involving lost children please go to the nearest steward. They will contact the Spraoi Child Welfare officers. Please follow any directions given by, and be courteous to, our stewards. Teva Lights Up Waterford STrEET THEATRE 15ft6: “Dynamite & Poetry” Irish Premiere “When the fuse gets shorter and there are no more friends, get ready for the boom. For all that begins shall end.” In ‘Dynamite & Poetry’ four acrobats deliver an explosive performance, literally making you jump out of your seat. They blow up the stage with a spectacle of Russian bar, teeterboard and Chinese pole. Risk is a necessity but all is complemented with a keen blend of humor and poetry. Artists: Thomas Dechaufour, Tain Molendijk, Richard Fox and Jasper D’Hondt Fidget Feet: “Urban Fly” Irish Premiere One of Ireland’s most innovative outdoor companies, Fidget Feet is an aerial circus performance company that has travelled the world. They tell stories anywhere they can, in theatres, from cranes, hidden in forests or swinging from buildings. Their aim is to find new ways of telling stories to new audiences. For the 2016 festival, Spraoi has commissioned Fidget Feet to create a new vertical dance show, with live music. Choreography: Chantal McCormick Music: Jym Darling Performers: Chantal McCormick, Lee Clayden, Kathryn Cooley Plastic Boom: “Water on Mars” A show of pure juggling, built using juggling’s natural drama, humour and airborne geometry. The performance was created by three American/Swedish jugglers who have each spent over 15 years researching how to combine the craft with music, acrobatics, snow, chocolate, tap dance, and 400 roles of tape. When this trio work together on a single project expect the unexpected from three masters in their field. Artists: Wes Peden, Tony Pezzo, Patrik Elmnert Les Mobilettes: “Café Frappé!” Irish Premiere Dance where you wouldn’t expect it! Travel back to the 1950s and savour a fresh and swinging show on the terrace. To the sound of an old radio, Judith and Lily move the tables, chairs and customers of a café around, eventually leading everyone to dance in a nostalgic tribute to times past. Forget your troubles and polish your dancing shoes for this interactive and original dance-theatre experience! Choreography: Marie Chataignier & Anlor Gueudret Performers: Marie Chataignier, Anlor Gueudret, Stéphanie Thibault Dramatization: Henri Bruère-Dawson Sound composition: Michel Risse et Renaud Biri Costume design: Faye Formisano Technical management: Gilles Ribes 10 Company: “Contiguo” Irish Premiere ‘Contiguo’ is born from humans living side by side with each other. It is the physical and emotional journey of connecting humanity. ‘Contiguo’ is body poetics testing the edges of what’s humanly possible. It’s the risk of reaching out to strangers and going outside our comfort zones, an act of constant reinvention through the power of others. It’s a show that is lyrical and dynamic, and an investigation of spatial and corporal language that strives to create its own medium of expression. The show is the result of searching a unique language in the circus tradition. The artists do not just use their skills in order to impress an audience, but more importantly to deliver an intimate message. Artists: Álvaro Reboredo, Álvaro Pérez Fullstop Acrobatic Theatre: “Outside the Box” Irish Premiere Who determines the image of men and women? Friends? Fashion? Film ? What is a new man? What is a ‘real’ man? And a ‘real’ woman? What do they look like? Men only think about one thing and women are the weaker sex… or not? But women are more emotional and men find it difficult to multi-task? True ? Stereotypes must come from somewhere. Every day we are bombarded by strong images of masculinity and femininity. Fullstop Acrobatic Theatre has combined circus, theatre and dance to explore these complex questions in a fun, surprising and innovative new show. Artists : Vicki Pompe and Wibbe Pompe Director : Craig Weston Curious State: “Morbid & Sons” Irish Premiere Victorian Undertakers - Est. 1847 The Morbid family business has been proudly passed down through the generations, until now that is. No one is dying anymore, a mix of yoga, newfad diets, and e-numbers are extending life expectancy. The obituaries have been blank for weeks. Archibald Morbid finds himself at the helm of a dying trade and struggles to save the family business from going under. An emergency meeting is held- the family decides to take to the streets to drum up some much-needed trade. As the Morbid family pass through the streets in their pedal-powered Victorian hearse, they might choose you to try on a coffin or to avail of their “buy now, die later” offer. Be careful they don’t “kill you with kindness” or “embalm you while you wait”. Remember, “death comes to us all in the end”. Director - Nicholas Kavanagh Movement - Miquel Barcelo Morbid & Sons is an interactive, macabre experience about Composer - Joe Harney death and the afterlife. Songs - Patrick Kavanagh It is a Three Sisters 2020 Development Project and was Costume Design - Teresa O’Keeffe developed with Arts Council Project Funding. Performers WATERFORD FOR European Capital of Culture Boom Circus: “BOOM!” Irish Premiere “BOOM!” breathes new life into the ancient tradition of masked theatre, full of spontaneous improvisation, heartwarming drama, impossible skills and hilarious moments of sheer humanity. Two performers portray a cast of 6 characters who put on an entire circus, complete with slackrope, Cyr Wheel, juggling and live music. “BOOM!” combines the spectacle and excitement of a big show with the intimate connection of a theatre piece. It brings the audience along for a ride that includes both delicate silence and raucous enjoyment. Artists: Peter Sweet, David Poznanter Actic: “Kiddy Police Patrol” “Urban Safari” Irish Premiere POLICE NOTICE: The police would like to bring your attention to the following: Are these the mounted police, the motorcycle department, or both? These two members of the Kiddy Ride Police Patrol will keep an eye on everything and everybody. Law enforcement and safety in public spaces are their primary goals. Walk too fast? You’ll be caught on police camera and pulled over. Cyclists will be given a unique motorcade when they least expect it. Random roadblocks will be set up, to catch people in the act of whatever it is they were doing. Theatrical police-interventions with a high entertainment level. END OF NOTICE. URBAN SAFARI: Join us on an Urban Safari. Together with two wildlife rangers, you’ll explore the flora and fauna of the urban wildlife park and you’ll meet a wide range of animals with their own unique traits and habits. Observe the species known as mankind in its natural habitat, and single out the peculiar and particular habits and behaviours of this species. Follow the “all terrain mobility scooter”, and get a great opportunity to examine more closely this particular species. At the end of the tour the group will experience first hand how a specimen is caught and tagged for further studies. Artists: Dick Cools, Leo van der Veen and Jelle de Bruijn Gijs van Bon: “Blom” Irish Premiere Slowly moving backward, the sand writer Blom draws in the streets. Sand comes out of his long arm and decorates the ground; a large flowery carpet; an ivy garland or a swarm of little hearts. Small buckets filled with coloured sands are placed close to the drawings so that everyone can colour them and add a personal touch. Abandoned to their fate, the drawings will be destroyed by humans, nature or time; only a memory will remain. The multidisciplinary objects and installations of Blom always move between theatrical and autonomous tension. He knows how to combine and to eliminate the boundaries between them, in order to create vital and powerful objects, which often have a poetic and delicate content or effect. “Garaghty and Thom” Irish Premiere Award winning street theatre from this classic yet unique double act. Richard Garaghty and Goronwy Thom are both seasoned veterans of show business. Their controlled chaotic cabaret will have everyone in hysterics. From highly skilled circus trickery and improvisation to comedy who knows what is planned and what is chance. The set and props can come from anywhere as this innovative duo use the environment for all their routines. Anything and everything is possible. Channeling the very essence of street comedy and theatre this is an unpredictable spectacle not to be missed. Artists: Richard Garaghty and Goronwy Thom Grant Goldie: “Second!” Grant Goldie presents - Second ! A wordless physical performance without subtitles. A glimpse at a man who repurposes the prosaic for delight. An eclectic mix of absurd storytelling, bowler padiddling, and umbrella posturing. A highly skilled show with laugh out loud moments. Winner - Perth (Australia) International Fringe Festival - Best Circus. Teatro Pachuco: “The Saxophone Man” A two metre tall lovable giant, with the head of a saxophone. In trench coat and top hat, he wanders the streets performing dreamlike sketches. Creator, performer, director: Rudi Galindo Strong Lady Productions: “LEAP” LEAP into the unexpected with this exciting acrobatic show from Strong Lady Productions. A strong lady and a graceful man flip traditional ideas about gender upside down in this surprising and uplifting acrobatic show. Watch as Charmaine lifts Reuben overhead and catches him as he leaps at her from every possible angle – ending with the spectacular and rare discipline of ‘The Perch’. LEAP is free from talking, hype and complicated storylines. It’s a show for everyone who likes to laugh, and these two performers revel in the joy of performing the biggest acrobatic tricks they can! Artists: Charmaine Childs, Reuben DotDotDot STrEET Music The Sanofi Spraoi Orchestra This project, in partnership with Sanofi, introduces young people to music making. They rehearse with tutor Lorcan Reidy at Spraoi Studios throughout July before featuring at all three days of the festival. This music education programme is made possible with the support of Spraois neighbours and partners Sanofi. The Absurdist Pipe Band No Rest for the Ridiculous! Back by popular demand !
