guise of eminent domain
– quite the paradox if we
think of imminent domain
as a tool to benefit public
welfare. Places like the art

community that has been
occupied by artists for
years now, still has an

constantly
seeking rights to the
dilapidated building from
the 1930s as a valuable

proximity to the city

this time, proven to have
the upper hand; they are
receiving great support
from the youth culture of
Berlin and those who wish
to maintain the unique
character of the city.
I, myself, had the
chance to visit Tacheles
a handful of times during
my time in Berlin. The dystopian looking
back lot, the damp and
graffiti-lined
stairwells,
and the various artist
studios all play into the
experience of the building. It would be hard to
imagine a gentrified space
in place of Tacheles. Regardless of the future,
we can think of the city as a
palimpsest – a constantly
layered portrait of Berlin. History remains, even if it
not visible anymore. My own hope is that
Tacheles

a

of Berlin. There is not a

Washington, DC houses dozens of museums and historic sites
that will excite just about anyone.
Many government institutions offer free tours of their

at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, to sit in on an oral

at the Senate and House

like the numerous bars and clubs off of Adams Morgan on the
Red Line and the brunch restaurants off of Eastern Market.
Stop on over afterward to the Hine Junior High School,

hundred exhibitors every Sunday.
Speaking of acclaim, cupcakes in DC are unparalleled. Take a
bus over to Georgetown to taste the wonder that is Georgetown

with the nearby Sprinkles and Baked & Wired.
Then, head on over to Food Network’s Cupcake Wars

Even the hotels in DC are remarkable. Near the legendary
K Street, right by Farragut Square, and a few steps away from
the Metro is the illustrious Mayflower Renaissance Hotel. For

politicians dine, and scandals happen.
There is always something going on in DC. It’s a marvelous

Combine your love for the
outdoors and the need of a
relaxing getaway after the
end of the semester by taking
a trip down to one of the first
wilderness parks in United
States.
Just over three hours
away
from
Stockton,
Yosemite National Park is
best known for its waterfalls
but also reveals deep valleys,
grand meadows, ancient
giant sequoias, and vast
wilderness areas to explore.
The road to Yosemite
from Stockton is not that
complicated as you can
take the CA 120 all the way
to the park. Once there,
an assortment of activities
awaits you. Depending on your mood
and interest you can choose
to go hiking, biking, spend
time with a park ranger, take
a bus tour of the park, or even
engage in bird-watching or
fishing trips. Yosemite
Falls
also
reaches their peak flow near
the end of May and usually
remains high into June
before drying up in August;
so the summer is the best
time to visit the park for
waterfalls!
Summertime also marks
the blooming of wildflowers
in the Yosemite Valley and
Wawona. Although most of
the flowers bloom in June,
some begin in May such as
the Sierra onion, lupine,
Mariposa lily, penstemon,
and flowering dogwood.
To stay the night at the
park, lodging options range
from simple tent cabins to
deluxe rooms at the park’s
hotels and resorts.
Accommodations known
for their spectacular views
are The Ahwahnee, Yosemite
Lodge at the Falls and
Wawona.
More information on the
different amenities, scenic
hot spots, outdoor activities
that are available for each
lodging, as well as pricing
and rooms can be found at
www.yosemitepark.com/
lodging.aspx.
Another popular way to
spend the night in the park is
to embrace nature and camp
out in one of Yosemite’s 13
popular campgrounds.
Depending on the time of
year and location, camping
fees range from $5 to $20
per night. Yosemite’s Upper
Pines Campground however
is one of the more well-liked
sites and is located near
Yosemite Village and Curry
Village and contains a fire
ring, picnic table, and food
lockers.

Reservations
for
all
lodgings and campsites are
available far in advance and
are especially recommended
to book in advance for the
summer months starting in
March.
It must also be noted
that sleeping in your car or
RV is not permitted in the
park except in individual
campsites. It must also be noted that
there is a park entrance fee
that applies to all visitors of
$20 per car if you arrive in
your private car, van, pickup
truck, or RV.
This is valid for unlimited
entries to Yosemite for
seven days, and since it also
includes all occupants of the
car, travelling to Yosemite
with a group of friends for
a few days will give you the
best bang for your buck!
For those who want to
avoid the entrance fee all
together, the fee is also
waived for selected holidays
and weeks such as National
Park Week from April 21st to
29th, Memorial Day, and Get
Outdoors Day on June 9th.
So get together your
friends or call up your
significant other and plan
a trip into the outdoors at
California’s famous Yosemite
National Park.
The free time and weather
available during summer
vacation presents the perfect
opportunity to go on one of
the most sought vacation
excursions – a cruise! Not
only do they present a unique
way to get to a particular
destination, but presentday cruises also offer lavish
amenities that make the boat
ride alone worth the trip.
An important aspect to
consider when deciding on
a cruise is the destination.
The most recognized cruise
destinations are the Bahamas
or Mexico, but cruises can
also take you to far off places
like Alaska or the Galapagos
Islands.
Also to consider are
“cruises to nowhere,” which
give people a chance to
experience the luxury of a
cruise without needing to
plan on packing for various
locations.
These
cruises
also tend to be shorter, and
significantly cheaper.
As with all vacations, time
and price is a huge factor in
planning a cruise. Fares can
vary between cruise lines
from less than $200, to more
than $5,000.
There are several things
that are involved in the price
of a cruise, whether it is the
level of luxury of the ship, the
location, or even the season.
For instance, a cruise in
November costs about half
as much as a cruise in July,
because of the prime weather
and travel opportunity of
the month. Also, certain
destinations such as the
Bahamas only depart from
certain locations.
This means, depending on
the location, a plane ticket
may need to be factored into
the pricing. Other cruises that
have a longer travel time will
end up having a larger fare as
well.
Setting up a cruise is
pretty easy. A quick Google
search yields a number of
sites that nicely display the
destinations, ships, and prices
based on month.
Websites like cruisecheap.
com provide the information,
and also answer questions
about
general
cruise
experiences.
Others,
such
as
cruisecritics.com,
tabulate
both regular user reviews as
well as professional reviews
of cruise lines and cruise
destinations.
Whether for a luxurious
experience or for a unique
means of travel, cruises offer
a variety of experiences.
Take the time to see what
destinations are available to
you at sea this summer.

This will sound cheesy,
but my favorite place
to go is back home to
Oakland.
I think my favorite place to visit would have
to be Lake Tulloch. I still remember floating

burgers and dogs.

Sacramento

Start the day off by going
straight to the heart of the

Sunny Los Angeles is a
great travel destination no
matter how long the trip, how
big the budget or the type of
experience you are looking
for-it has it all.
There are not many
places that offer as many
possibilities and experiences,
whether
you’re
in
the
search for culture, art, food,
adventure, music, shopping,
or sightseeing.
The first thing to know
when you visit Los Angeles is
that it is a big city divided into
neighborhoods, each with a
unique history and identity.
Santa Monica, Hollywood,
Downtown, West Hollywood,
Griffith Park, Venice Beach,
and Beverly Hills are some
of the most famous areas of
Los Angeles which offer a
variety of places to visit and
experience.
Also, if you don’t have a
car, plan for having money for
travel, given that beaches and
places like Disneyland and Six
Flags are a drive away from
the city of Los Angeles. Even going from West
Hollywood to Downtown, you
may want to consider the cost
of public transportation.
If you’re not looking for
the surf and tan, or rather
expensive
theme
park
experience and want to see
the city’s culture and nightlife,
you’ll have plenty to do within
Los Angeles itself.
If you plan to do a short
four or five day trip and want
to get the most experiencefilled trip you can, without
taking a huge chunk out of
your bank account, be sure to
plan ahead.
There are concerts, fairs,
festivals, and events of all
kinds going on in Los Angeles
throughout the year.
The Chinese New Year, the
Venice Art Fair, and the LA
Film Festival are some great
options, other than the usual
Disneyland or Universal
Studios visit (although these
offer hundreds of tours,
shops, restaurants, and of
course roller coasters.)
For all of us frugal students,
it is valuable to know that that
there are also plenty of things
to do and places to go around
Los Angeles for free.
There are dozens of
museums that have to do with
Hollywood, art, film, western
history, and culture, and they
are scattered throughout the
city.
Many of these museums
offer discounts or free entry
at certain times or days of the
month.
You
can
also
see
Hollywood’s Walk of Fame,
stroll through the shops at
Chinatown or Olvera Street,
walk the streets of Venice
Beach while watching street
performers and live music, or
have a bonfire at Huntington
Beach with friends.
Los Angeles is an amazing
place where you can find and
meet people from all over the
world and from all walks of
life.
It is a place to expect the
new and original, where you
can get lost in the spontaneity
of a city that always has
something going on.
If you go tomorrow or
sometime this summer, make
sure you have fun and really
