Sixth Sunday of Easter May 5, 2013 May the peoples praise you, 0 God; may all the peoples praise you! -Psalm 67:6 COME, LORD JESUS The first reading today may seem somewhat out of place. Doesn't the "feast of Stephen" evoke memories of the Christmas season, rather than Easter? But it is most relevant for the days after the Ascension. Jesus Christ, the Son of Man, stands at his Father's right hand to welcome Stephen into heaven. Indeed, that is why Jesus has gone before us-to welcome us into God's house. In the second reading the focus on heavenly reward continues: the new day coming with its hope and expectation. There is also an echo here of Advent, but it is now the fulfillment of those hopes, the resolution of all questions and difficulties. John's Gospel today is part of the section known as the "high priestly prayer" of Jesus. It was his prayer at the Last Supper as he prepared for his roles as priest and victim. But it is also his pra er as the glorified and ascended high priest, the giver of glory, the center of faith, and the master of his destiny and ours. TODA V'S READINGS First Reading - Because Stephen professes his faith in the Son of Man, he is stoned to death (Acts 7:55-60). Psalm - The Lord is king, the most high over all the earth (Psalm 97). Second Reading - I, the Alpha and the Omega, am coming soon (Revelation 22: 12- 14, 16-17, 20). GospelJesus prays that the love of the Father may be in those who believe (John 17:20-26). .z;;Ij?'7q.~, e;'JH"·e;",,~ '71,~~ q..I~/q~. o.".~. READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Acts 19:1-8; Ps 68:2-3ab, 4-5acd, 6-7ab; In 16:29-33 Tuesday: Acts 1:15-17,20-26;Ps 113:1-8;Jn 15:9-17 Wednesday: Acts 20:28-38; Ps 68:29-30, 33-36ab; .I n 17: 1 1 b-l 9 Thursday: Acts 22:30; 23:6-11; Ps 16:1-2a, 5, 7-11; In 17:20-26. Friday: Acts 25: 13b-ll; Ps 103:1-2, 11-12, 19-20ab; Jn21:15-19 Saturday: Acts 28: 16-20,30-31; Ps 11:4, 5, 7; Jn 21 :20-:25 Sunday: Vigil: Gn 11:1-9 or Ex 19:3-8a, 16-20b or Ez 37:1-14 or JI3:1-5; Ps 104:]-2,24,35, 27-30; Rom 8:22-27; Jn 7:37-39 Day: Acts 2:1-11; Ps 104:1,24,29-31,34; 1 Cor 12:3b-7, 12-13 or Rom 8:8-17; In 20:19-23 or Jn 14:15-16, 23b-26 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The paschal candle, blessed at the Easter Vigil, carried in procession into the darkened church, and aflame with the light of Christ to be passed hand to hand to renew our baptism, burns for the fifty days of Easter whenever we gather as Christ's risen body. In the last fifty years, we have grown to see this candle as the sign of Christ's enduring presence with us. Before then, it was often seen more as a kind of signpost pointing backwards to events in Christ's life. Therefore, in some places, on the fortieth day after Easter, in order to portray the disappearance of Jesus at the Ascension, the candle was hidden. Now we see the paschal candle as a sign ofthe great baptismal season of grace and it remains in a prominent place throughout the entire fifty days. We do know of some churches that did not hide the candle after the Ascension. In England before the Reformation, the candle was left in place for fifty days, since on Pentecost Eve there was a vigil, and the candle was used to consecrate the waters of the font. In Salisbury cathedral, the candle was thirty-six feet high, and in Westminster Abbey weighed over three hundred pounds. On Pentecost, the candles were melted to make tapers for the funerals of the poor. PRAYING WITH BODY, MIND, AND VOICE SINGING "By its very nature song has both an individual and a communal dimension. Thus, it is no wonder that singing together in church expresses so well the sacramental presence of God to his people" (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Sing to the Lord, no. 2). As we raise our voices as one in the prayers, dialogues, and chants of the Mass, most especially in the Eucharistic Prayer, as well as the other hymns and songs, we each lend our individual voices to the great hymn of praise and thanksgiving to the Triune God. Mother's Day Prayer My Mom I love her and that's why I pray not just today on this Mother's Day, But with each remembrance of the love she's expressed my thankfulness to the Lord I've professed For my life began in a warm and safe place then grew more secure in Mom's tender embrace When I was little she taught me to crawl, walk and run and get up when Ifall Nurtured and caredfor she raised me to stand, lifted, supported by her loving hand She believed in me inspired me to dream nothing was impossible for me, it seemed It was her example that pointed the way to the life in Christ I know today My mom, I love her on this Mother's Day She's the reason I'm taking this moment to pray Mother's 'Day 'Remembrance In !M.ewwry of Bernidette Stelly and Elme Andrus req. by Ella Charles Roquisha Norman and Lila Scypion req. by JoEsha K.
