Photography by Don Carrick, Studio 413.net FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER’S CHAIR AUGUST – 2015 T he month of July was very busy, very productive and very successful. The month featured the 31st annual Super Chevy Show and just one week later the 3rd Keystone Diesel Truck Nationals. Both events sparked some thoughts I’d like to share with everyone. The phenomena of ET bracket racing at Super Chevy continues to amaze me. Each year the event draws large numbers of bracket racers and this year’s show was no different as the event saw a total of 664 entries competing for the annual Super Chevy Championships. We all know the numbers in ET racing haven’t been good since the great recession struck in late 2008. Many tracks across the country continue to struggle to try and bring the participant numbers back to the great days prior to the economy crashing. We at Maple Grove are not immune to the problem, but we do see some hope by seeing some numbers increasing in Pro, Street and Top Bike. All tracks see Super Eliminator as a financial issue for the car owners, due to the high costs of running a seven second dragster in the eliminator and hopefully we’ll start to see increases in the eliminator’s numbers soon. Why then does Super Chevy work so well? Frankly, I don’t know and I really don’t want to analyze the reasons. From my point of view this event has grown into a truly family and friend event. Many of the entries come with four and five people to enjoy the entire weekend, called Super Chevy. Many make the event their annual family vacation time together. During the weekend in traveling around the pits we saw large groups of family and friends sitting in their pit area enjoying themselves. We know there is a large turnout from the Long island New York area that come each and every year. This year we knew of one particular group who brought four entries to the race and had a total of 14 rooms at the Courtyard Marriott in Wyomissing. Just one example of the economic impact the show brings to Berks County. One portion of the event has really taken off, True Street. The entrants must leave on a 10 mile cruise and return to the track where they are led up the push track road to make three full runs back to back to back. The entrants can’t raise the hoods or do any work on the cars which makes the show that much more exciting to watch. The eliminator had a total of 47 entries this year, the largest yet! To watch the cruise portion depart from Car Show Central is amazing with how many cars are involved and how many spectators line up to see the parade get underway. The Super Chevy weekend’s weather wasn’t perfect as Saturday dawned with showers and rain all around the area which caused the car show to suffer. Who wants to drive their show car to an event in the rain or the threat of rain? The rain didn’t really hit the track as we only lost 20 minutes for a shower Saturday morning. Sunday was a whole new issue as the heat was oppressive which hurt the spectator turnout and the last chance race (86 entries) on Sunday. Cecil County and Island Dragway cancelled their scheduled events due to the heat on Sunday, but we hung in there and completed the drag race portion of the show by 5PM! A tip of the hat to everyone involved in the event, from staff, to racers, to show car entrants and swap meet vendors you all did a fabulous job in presenting a great event! Look for some changes in next year’s event and watch our website for these changes in the near future. Go ahead and put the dates in your calendar for the 2016 Super Chevy set for July 15 – 17. Continues 4 1320 Hotline - July 2015 Maple Grove Raceway - Mohnton, PA From the General Managers Chair Continued from pg 3 Just one week after Super Chevy the big trucks rolled into Maple Grove for the third annual Keystone Diesel Truck Nationals. This is truly one of the most unique events we host at the Grove! The heart and soul of the event is one Randy Kaylor, the owner of Pro Fab Associates located in Manheim PA. Randy owns the company and also owns a 360 dirt sprint car that he races at northeast oval tracks. His love of big trucks is evident as he puts many hours during the year into preparing for the diesel truck event. He and his loyal group of judges and volunteers have come together with Maple Grove to grow the event into probably the second largest big rig show in the east. The event has a very unique atmosphere as we see many truckers and their families who work hours to prepare, polish and pamper their daily work trucks for the show. Pro Fab sponsored a Kids Zone this year and we saw a huge amount of kids enjoying the many activities that were offered, from face painting, to coloring contests, to riding on the unique barrel train all seemed to have a great time. The great spectator turnout all seem to be having a great time, enjoying every aspect of the show. From the judged show entries, to the non-judged entrants, to the drag racing and the giant midway of vendors that attended the one day spectacle. The event was blessed with great weather which made for an enjoyable event and yours truly enjoyed the event as much as anyone in attendance. Mark your calendar for the 4th annual show, set for Saturday, July 23rd, 2016. Now it’s time for our team to turn our attention to the rescheduled Glory Days, August 23, the Rumble at the Grove, August 29 and to conclude the 2015 version of the Sunoco Race Fuels Money Trail ET Series. © Bill Buchanan continues to improve from his recent surgery. For the time being Endo Bill has turned into Starto Bill as he’s been observed catching the racing from the starting line area for the last couple of weekends. You can’t keep a good man down! While Bill is recuperating Ryan Velez has moved from the starting team to fill in for Bill. Ryan has done a great job in his first year as a team member and continues to learn more and more every weekend about what it takes to do a good job at the end of the track. Sue Feger has done an amazing job in raising money for Team Maple Grove. Sue, with the help of Donna Boice and Shannon Cain, has been doing 50-50 raffles and Bogie races at our Money Trail events and for the first time ever, Sue did 50-50 raffles on both Saturday and Sunday of our Super Chevy Show raising close to $600.00 over the two days. We tip our hat to these ladies for their total efforts and when you see them in the pits, please say thank you for helping our team. Since June they have combined to raise the fund to a record of $4,661 as of August 10! One of our key members in the Event Service department, Rory Ulrich, recently operated on at Reading Hospital where he was treated for a quintuple bypass. Rory is currently recuperating and hopefully be back in action for this year’s NHRA Keystone Nationals. We wish him well! Our Super Chevy Show team did an outstanding job in every department. The excessive heat combining with over 665 entries made a tough weekend for everyone working to get the event completed. The 31st annual event was a great success and it wouldn’t have been without the team coordinating the entire weekend. Thank you all! It seems hard to believe, but the final race of the 15 race Sunoco Race Fuels Money Trail Series is set for August 22. The event is also for NHRA King of Track and all winners will come back to run for the NHRA King of the track. The champion receives a NHRA Wally and a beautiful King of the Track jacket. The race will also be a Twilight event, with the gates opening at 11A, Time Trails at noon and eliminations after two time trails around 4PM. Come on out and see who will be the 2015 Champions! Immediately after the race, we will draw 16 names that will be eligible for the Money Trail ET Shootout, which will be held at the Keystone NHRA Nationals. The Shootout champion receives the beautiful new golf cart with a brand new engine! It’s never too early to start thinking about our annual Award Banquet set for Saturday evening, February 6, 2016. The big news is we are proud to announce the new Doubletree Hotel in center city Reading will be the host for the affair. The General Manager, Craig Poole, truly is an amazing person who treats guests royally from a stay at the hotel, to the banquet facility. This will be truly a 5 Star affair! Look for a story in the October edition of the 1320 Hotline which will outline the new hotel. Just one item deserving mention, there is a parking garage which will hold 950 cars and that’s just the start of how well planned the new facility will be. The hotel plans to open in late October of this year. Well on the subject of the Awards Banquet, the three best appearing cars for the 2015 season have been selected and will be placed on a special awards ballot with the winner being honored the banquet. We’d like to thank the Ormsbee family for sponsoring the program through Safeco Insurance. The nominees are, Session One-Jeff Hatfield, and his beautiful Pro Dodge Dart, Session Two-Brian Marko, for his beautiful Chevelle running in Super and Pro, Session Three-Phil Feger’s beautiful Street 2014 Mustang. The NHRA Keystone Nationals is enjoying good pre-sales on tickets and other special programs we offer. The Don Schumacher Racing Hospitality package sold out 6 weeks ago. The Trackside and RV Court area has already exceeding last year’s total of units and we expect a total sellout within ten days. If you desire to reserve a RV spot in this area, you better do it today. Call 610856-9200 to reserve and pay for a spot. Spots are $500 and come with two general admission tickets good for all four days of the nationals. 1320 Hotline - July 2015 5 Volume 39 - Issue No. 2 BITS FROM THE PITS NHRA’s new President Peter Clifford has been a busy man in his early stages of his new role. Since he took over NHRA announced a new television agreement with Fox Network with 16 shows being live and 4 shows being on Fox TV nationally. We totally support this new take on television and we strongly think the ratings will rise in the future! With the cancellation of the Hannum’s Harley Davidson show Sunday August 23, an opportunity to reschedule the Glory Days Nostalgia Day Don’t miss it! See the event flyer in this edition of the 1320 Hotline outlining the activities scheduled. Maple Grove Raceway announces new incentive for Glory Days car show entries. Maple Grove Raceway’s VP and General Manager, Lex Dudas, announced a special incentive to car show participants at the Glory Days event, Sunday August 23. The top 25 picks from the Glory Days show will be invited to attend the Sunday portion of the Keystone NHRA Nationals on October 4th to participate in a special pre-race parade and to display their award winning cars in an area for the fans to enjoy during the Championship Sunday. Dudas added, “We have some great show cars attending our special events and we wanted to be able to showcase some of these cars if front of the thousands of fans attending our Keystone NHRA Nationals.” Each winning entry will receive two general admission tickets to attend the daylong event. Each ticket is valued at $50.00. The winners will also receive beautiful plaques for being chosen a top pick at Glory Days. The car show entry at Glory Days has no entry fee, just purchase a pit pass for $15 and pull into the designated car show area to be judged. For further information, contact the Maple Grove Raceway office at 610-856-9200 or email us at [email protected]. Mid-week track rentals have exceeded our projections for the 2015 season. We’ve hosted the Shelby Club of America and numerous team test days. We’re happy that Turn 14 will return for their annual company picnic and race in October. Anyone interested in hosting their company function during week feel free to contact Lex Dudas for further information. A new and unique event has been added to our busy calendar for Sunday, October 25. Beastcoast Productions is teaming with Maple Grove to produce the first event “Roll-Racing” show. The event is unique, no elapsed times are recorded, racers start behind the burnout boxes and run to about 1,400 feet where the speeds are recorded. Look for imports, domestics, high end sports cars which should be interesting to watch with this unique format of racing. For further information go to www.beastcoastso.com. Check out some roll racing from Royal Purple Raceway in Houston Texas, https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=OVGfgh6zVEo. The Penske Rumble at the Grove presented by CJ’s Tire and Automotive Saturday, August 29th, is just around the corner. See the ad in this edition for all details for the event. Spectators and fans, stop in any of CJ’s 16 locations and pick up a $5.00 discount coupon for the event. Top Sportsman, Top Dragster, and the index drivers, junior dragsters and the popular new Pro Dial eliminator will round out the the show. We hope to see many of you at the Rumble! Maple Grove Raceway announces Money Trail Points program for Junior Street. Starting in 2016 the junior street participants will be running for a Money Trail championship for the first time in 2016. The eliminator has seen substantial growth since its inception in 2014 and the participants have earned the privilege to be a part of the annual series. In making the announcement Lex Dudas stated; “We’re very encouraged in the growth we’ve seen in Junior Street and we strongly believe in the program. By adding points we hope more of our youth and their families will run for the 2016 championship.” The series will be sponsored by Universal Technical Institute who also have been the sponsor for Junior Dragsters for a number of years. UTI is investing in this program and hopefully they will see a new crop of students attending the Exton based campus in the future. The 2016 series will offer the following year end payout at the 2016 Awards Banquet. First Place, $250, Second Place $150, Third Place $100, fourth and fifth place $50 each. NHRA and Maple Grove Raceway are proud to announce we will again showcase junior dragsters and junior street during the NHRA Keystone Nationals. The top six point finishers in UTI Junior Dragsters will be invited to the big show as well as the top two winning junior street drivers based on most wins during the season. Both categories will make an exhibition run on Saturday and Sunday. The group will have their cars on display in the Kids Zone and will be available to answer questions to possible new entries into our sport. The group will also be a part of pre-race ceremonies on Sunday morning. Each participant will receive 3 event credentials to the event and one parking pass per family. Fun Ford Series adds True Street. We’ve received emails from Ford fans and racers asking us to add in True Street to this year’s show. We will do so and the format will be the same as we utilized during Super Chevy. Please refer to the Fun Ford Show flyer in this edition for all the details. Everyone at Maple Grove would like to extend our congratulations to long time racer Rich Orth and his soon to be bride Stacey Thsudy. Rich and Stacey are getting married September 18 at the beach in Ocean City. All the best to Rich and Stacey! Congrats go out to Brent Miles, winner of a Porta Tree Super 2000 Practice Tree from our track announcer Roger Leister and his trivia contest challenge. Roger would like to thank Dick’s Radiator Shop and Hoosier Tires for sponsoring the contest. The NAPA /Carlyle Tool Box drawing generated $400 for the Team Maple Grove cause and went to happy racer Jared Horn. There’s no arguing that. But it’s who you share that passion with that tells you just how deep it runs. Rich Fox is a man passionate about racing, so much so that after years away from the sport, he and his sons are now making names for themselves here at Maple Grove. “I got started drag racing in high school, after I got my car, “said Rich. “We used to go Thursday nights to Hatfield Drag Strip and had a little bit of success in the beginning. Then I got married and went into my father’s business and got away from the racing.” That business is Richard Fox Contractors, a site preparation company. Rich’s sons, Regan and Derrick, both now work for the company, as does Rich’s daughter, Kristen, who runs the company. “She pays the bills and lets us race,” explained Rich. Rich, now retired, went on to talk about how it was his boys that really got him back into racing. “The boys got into cars, and as that interest increased they wanted to branch out and try other things. Racing became a common interest for all of us. As we became successful in business we had the time and money to really get into the drag racing. It’s great because I get to spend weekends with my boys racing the ET bracket series at Maple Grove.” That interest started for Regan, a Project Manager for the site company, when he bought a ’69 Nova at auction. “It was like a street race car and we started playing with it. We took it to the next level, started racing at the track. Then my father and brother bought the roadster that Shorty (Paul Thimm, Jr.) is currently running. We went to the track on weekends and I got hooked.” For Derrick, a Superintendent for the company, the interest started as a spectator at Nationals. “Then I took lessons at the Doug Foley drag racing school. I had a blast doing that, then started to research on the internet. And we showed up here at Maple Grove not knowing anything. We just learned our way through it these past nine years.” 1320 Hotline - August 2015 13 “We had a dream of someday being able to come up here and win races, which we never thought would happen. Now Derrick and Regan are at or near the top of their classes,” said Rich. Derrick runs Super Pro while Regan runs Pro. But they haven’t had their current success all on their own. They all express their gratitude towards Paul Thimm, Jr., who works under the name Shorty’s Race Engines. “I knew Paul’s father from work, so when we started coming here to race on a regular basis we asked Paul for help,” Rich said. “It then turned out we hired him for our business, where he’s an asset in every way. Sometimes it’s not easy to work for friends, but it’s turned out to be great.” But not everyone in the family shares the passion. “My wife, Pam, says to me every week ‘You’re going to quit now, right’. Well, that’s just not going to happen! I’m having too much fun!” exclaimed Rich. Rich’s passion for racing also carries over to a passion for his car collection. “I have a GMC Typhoon, the ’32 street rod, a ’61 Ventura Superstock, and a ‘51 GMC pickup truck which is a recent acquisition. We had that truck restored because my father had a ’51 GMC when he started the business. I put his company logo on the truck and keep it as a tribute to my Dad. It was he who started this whole thing.” When asked why they love drag racing so much, Derrick explained “my brother and I both played college football. But once you’re done playing sports you need an outlet for that competitive fire. Racing brings back that competitive win/lose attitude.” With so much talk about the Fox family, it’s Rich who points out they are just part of a bigger racing family. “My car broke today, and ten people came over to help. It’s amazing how everyone helps one another.” Rich continued, “We work together, play together, and race together. We have our moments, but the drag racing has really brought us closer together and you can’t beat that.” © 14 1320 Hotline - August 2015 Maple Grove Raceway - Mohnton, PA 2015 RUMBLE AT THE GROVE SATURDAY, AUGUST 29 Sponsored by Penske Truck Leasing Presented by CJ’s Tire and Automotive FEATURING: Northeast Outlaw Pro Mod Association 16 car qualified field Pro Mod will run 1 qualifying round at 7:30P on Friday evening, August 28, see below for entire event schedule. From the track staff to concessions, event services to maintenance, it certainly isn’t a one man, or woman, show. But one person who seems to have her hand in a number of track duties is Tricia Gockley. Tricia began coming to the Grove at the age of 8 with her family. “My dad raced, not in points. We would come down when he raced his cars and camp out in the campground.” Her husband, Kyle Gockley, is a motorcycle racer in the Sunoco Race Fuels Money Trail Series. “He started racing heavily five years ago, in 2010. But I couldn’t make it to the Grove to watch many of his races due to owning by own consignment shop in Ephrata. Sundays were really the only days I could watch.” Tricia’s shop took a lot of time away from Kyle and her family. So she sold the shop in 2014 and planned on getting her real estate license. But a funny thing happened. “We got an email saying that Maple Grove was looking for people, and I applied.” That lead to her first jobs at the Grove, burn out and tech. “I did burn out with Jake (Green). I learned a lot from him then moved over to tech. That was a lot of fun but I wanted to do more, so I moved over to staging.” “My time in staging wasn’t long because I slowly started to learn the Comp U Link system in the tower. I took over that on a regular basis during Super Chevy 2014.” Tricia continues to run the Comp U Link system during most events at Maple Grove. Yet she continues to do even more for the facility. “About two weeks after I started Jason (Leber) asked if I would come in during the week to scrape the track since I lived so close. I did that with Jason and Karl (Himmelmann). They taught me how to scrape and then for the rest of the season 1320 Hotline - August 2015 17 GOCKLEY She’s here! She’s there! She’s Everywhere! we did the scraping. That’s when I started coming in to do maintenance, whether it was the track or the pits. Basically all the stuff that needs to happen before racing begins.” Her scraping duties continue to this day, and she’s even added on more responsibility. Tricia works in the Maple Grove offices once a week. “So if I’m not in the office I’m at the track scraping,” said Tricia. When asked how many days a week she’s here, Tricia lets out a slight chuckle. “Six” was her answer. “It really depends on what event we have coming up that weekend, but on the average six,” she said. What keeps her coming back to Maple Grove? “The relationships,” explained Tricia. “You become close to a lot of people you work with, and the racers. You start to care about everyone on a personal level.” “And I enjoy watching my husband race, being here when he’s here. I missed a lot of that before coming to work for Maple Grove.” The next generation of Gockley’s have made their presence known at the track. “We have six children, ranging in age from 17 down to 7.” Kristina, Dalton, Emma, Layla, Kyle, and Mathias all spend time at the track, either helping Mom in the tower or Dad in the pits. Dalton even has come to work for the Grove, helping Tricia on her scraping and maintenance duties. “He’s my scraping partner. He says that scraping is so tough that he can’t wait to go into the Navy and train to be a SEAL!” said Tricia. When it all comes down to it, Tricia’s favorite part of the job is race day. “I just love race day. The action on track is what I love to see.” And when asked what the next job she wants to tackle is, Tricia’s not shy. “Lex’s job,” is her reply. Lex Dudas may want to look out, because at the rate Tricia is going she may just get that General Manager job! © 18 1320 Hotline - August 2015 Maple Grove Raceway - Mohnton, PA Import & Domestic Nationals September 12-13 Volume 39 - Issue No. 3 F or one weekend in September, Maple Grove Raceway becomes the home of some very quick import cars. With over 500 trucks on property, the big rigs put on quite the show. Over 100 trucks participated in the drag racing portion of the show. The crowd most definitely enjoyed seeing the rigs tear down the track, some approaching 100 miles per hour. The trucks weren’t the only vehicles making the trip down Maple Grove’s strip. The Jersey Thunder jet car, driven by Ernie Bogue, was on hand to wow the crowd, and with speeds of almost 300 miles per hour, the Jersey Thunder certainly did that. Also thrilling the crowd was the XDP Monster Truck driven by Dave Radzierez. The truck was there to crush some cars and get some air, and Radzierez didn’t disappoint. He flipped on his last run but exited the truck unhurt. But the majority of the trucks on hand were there to show off, and that they did. Awards were handed out for a wide variety of classes from best of show to the funny awards like older than dirt. The Kids Zone was a huge hit with the youngsters, as was the Monster Truck rides provided by KSR Motorsports. On a day where trucks ruled the Grove, there was something there for the entire family to enjoy. High Street West Chester, PA 19382 Volume 39 - Issue No. 3 1320 Hotline - August 2015 25 26 1320 Hotline - August 2015 FROM THE DESK OF THE DIRECTOR OF C O M M U N I C AT I O N S I ’ve noticed that the word “family” comes up a lot here at Maple Grove. Lex Dudas uses it to describe the type of staff we have. Jason Leber uses it to describe the racers we have. And Anne Beegle uses it to describe the folks buying tickets for Nationals. But what does it mean to me? One definition that Webster’s Dictionary states for “Family” is “a group of people united by certain convictions or a common affiliation”. Well, that’s easy to put into perspective at the Grove. “Certain convictions” would be the belief that drag racing is fun. It’s a great way to spend the day either racing your own vehicle or watching the wide variety of cars, trucks, or motorcycles that do run Maple Grove’s quarter-mile. The “common affiliation” would be Maple Grove itself. Where do our racers and spectators choose to have fun? Maple Grove. But that really just scratches the surface. Where I really see “family” is in Sunoco Race Fuels Victory Lane. It’s the rare occasion that a winning racer is there by themselves. More often than not a large contingency greets the winner at Victory Lane for congratulations and pictures. These contingencies are made up of all sorts of friends and family. Mom, Dad, kids, brothers, sisters. They’re all there. But so are the friends that helped set up the winning car. They’re part of the racing family for that driver. And don’t forget the fellow racers that are there to share in the excitement of the win. The best time in Victory Lane to see family is with the junior racers. Being that many of them don’t have driver’s licenses yet, it only makes sense that they come with family. But it’s the size of the families that really gets me. Families like the Ketterers. I can barely fit them all in the victory photo when one of them wins! It’s a great thing to see. Many times the drag racing bug is handed down generation by generation. Sometimes it even means family members are racing against one another. In motorcycles, we’ve seen Bruce and Kyle Gockley race one another, as have Joe and Cory Stuebner. Both father and son groupings make for great races. Last issue I did a feature story on Bob and Lee Ann Ormsbee. They race, their son races, and now their granddaughter races. Now that’s handing down a tradition! But let’s not forget the families that actually work at the Grove. Couples like John and Beth Hoffert, Dave and Betsy Thomas, and brothers John and Chester Clair. They make up a part of the staff that reflects the family approach taken at Maple Grove. There are so many families here that I didn’t name, mainly because there just isn’t enough room to do so. But they also help make up the rich tradition that is Maple Grove. A tradition that just isn’t stopping. When it all comes down to it, my definition of “family” would then have to be Maple Grove itself. I know that’s casting a wide net over a single word, but to limit it to one thing at the Grove just doesn’t do the word justice. And that’s the way it should be. © Maple Grove Raceway - Mohnton, PA Volume 39 - Issue No. 3 1320 Hotline - August 2015 27 28 1320 Hotline - August 2015 Maple Grove Raceway - Mohnton, PA MONEY TRAIL NEWS FINAL ROUND RESULTS SUNOCO RACE FUELS MONEY TRAIL NO. 8, JULY 4 SUNOCO RACE FUELS MONEY TRAIL NO.11, JULY 12 Canceled due to rain Rick Terkowski certainly liked the view from Sunoco Victory Lane at Maple Grove Raceway because he visited there twice in consecutive days. From miles around, Chevys converge for one of the Maple Grove’s biggest weekends, and this year was no exception. The annual Super Chevy Show took place July 17-19, and again it was the largest single weekend on the Super Chevy calendar. Hundreds of entries, 664 to be exact, hit the quarter mile for a great weekend of racing. Eight classes of racers took to the track, each trying to lay claim to a Super Chevy award. Included in the racing was the True Street class which ran on Saturday July 18. The class consisted of 47 cars that cruised the countryside around Maple Grove then hit the track for three passes to see whose car could cruise and race the best in one day. The winner was the one with the best average ET from their three runs, and that winner was Glenn Hunter with an 8.416 average. The Drive Duracell.com Bracket 1 class was hotly contested. The Quarterfinals saw Bob Krown of Levittown, Pa. beat Cory Pelletier, Robert Duvall of Westminster, Pa. bested Jeremy Kleinfelter of Newmanstown, Pa., Brian Cosprin of N.J. defeat Jerry Zedek of Seven Valleys, Pa., and Nick Reginella of Elizabethtown, Pa. face down Lenny Bacher of Howell, N.J. Taking it to the semifinals, Robert Duvall beat Brian Cosprin and Nick Reginella bested Bob Krown. It was Nick Reginella who came out on top when he beat Robert Duvall in the finals, where his .005 reaction time helped propel him to the win. The Carlyle Tools Bracket 2 class also saw great action. In the Quarterfinals, Tina Orth of Myerstown defeated Charlie Birkhead, Jr. of Pottstown, Pa., Ed Knodler from Concord N.H. beat Ray Schrandt of Horsham, Pa., and Scott Tupper of Montgomery, Pa. bested Donald Nesselrodie of Pucellville, Va. In the semis, Scott Tupper had a bye while it was Tina Orth beating Ed Knodler. The finals saw Tupper defeat Orth. Over in the DOT/Street division it was a five-driver Quarterfinal. Kevin Render of South River, N.J. defeated Barry Gerz, Jr. of Lancaster, Pa., Peter Huff of Sewell, N.J. beat Jeffrey Burnley of Palm, Pa., and John Sheaffer, also of Lancaster, Pa. had a bye run. The semifinals saw Peter Huff get the bye run, while Render and Sheaffer went head to head with Render coming out with the win. And it was Render taking the final elimination win light over Huff, who fouled at the start. But there was also a great deal of specialty racing as well. Six nostalgia nitro funny cars and one nitro burning Chevy-powered Top Fueler made the trek to Maple Grove to race at the Super Chevy Show. When Jimmy Young broke on Saturday that left six cars to run on Sunday. Both Paul Romine in the “Man O’ War” Mustang and Mike Lewis in the red Jungle Jim car had competition byes in the first round and advanced to the semifinals. The other first round heats saw Steve Nichols in the Mill Road Boys car get the win over Troy Ray and his “Wildchild” Challenger, and Shawn Bowen in the “Violator” take out John “Bodie” Smith in the blue Jungle Jim car. Moving on to the semis, Bowen defeated Nichols with Bowen overcoming a massive holeshot to beat Nichols. The last pairing saw Romine race Lewis, and it was Romine who came out the winner. The finals then pitted Bowen against Romine, with Bowen driving to the finals win. Jet cars also made appearances during Super Chevy. The Queen of Diamonds II piloted by Jill Canuso beat the Jersey Thunder driven by Ernie Bogue in each head to head race in which they competed. The day was not just about racing. An extensive car show was also part of the festivities, where hundreds of Chevy fans displayed their vehicles all looking to walk away with best in show. That award went to Tom Bain and his ’72 Chevy Nova. The manufacturer’s midway was made up of vendors with just about every product a Chevy lover would need for his or her ride. And the swap meet was a paradise for those looking for that special part for their Chevrolet. All in all, the Super Chevy Show was another huge success for Maple Grove Raceway, and we can’t wait for Super Chevy 2016! 38 1320 Hotline - August 2015 Maple Grove Raceway - Mohnton, PA SUPER CHEVY SHOW - SUNDAY CAR SHOW AWARDS JULY 19, 2015 Modified 1969 Camaro runner-ups: Chuck Forsyth (1969 Chevy Z-28), Chad Kucsan (1969 Camaro).
