Horses + Machu Picchu = Magic
By Suzanne Murphree
Suzanne & Jigante at
Salkantay Pass
15213 feet above sea level
Long before I knew of Bucket Lists I dreamed
of going to Machu Picchu. The ancient Inca ruins
tucked away high in the Andes Mountains of Peru
have been a tourist and scholar destination since being
“discovered” in 1911. Images of this abandoned city
in the sky fill the pages of every world history text
book of school children…or at least they did mine.
They also filled my dreams of one day visiting this
enchanting place. I never dreamed I would be able
to trek to the outskirts of the Lost City via horseback.
Mountain Lodges of Peru (ML of P) did a rarity in
life… fulfilled my dream and expanded on it!
I first learned of Mountain Lodges through
The North American Trail Ride Conference (NATRC).
This fine competitive trail ride organization had raffled
off a ML of P horse trek and it caught my eye. Then
my imagination caught on fire. Hiking the challenging
Inca Trail no longer appealed to me but I still wanted
to visit Machu Picchu. Take the train to Machu Picchu… or ride horses…. why not?
Mountain Lodges offers a unique experience.
Their “Ride the Salkantay Trail tour” is a lodge to
lodge ride composed of 5 days of riding within 7 days.
While hikers vie for coveted (and limited) slots to hike
the 5 days or so to Machu Picchu I was able to admire
the scenery from the back of a horse. A Quarter Horse
Page 6
no less. These rugged, specially bred and trained
horses packed me and my companions for the 5 day
lodge to lodge journey along mountain passes, trails
and roads traversing 9 bio-zones. My horse, Jigante,
treated this like a walk in the park without acting like
a deadhead. He was responsive and tough. This tough
characteristic I came to really appreciate. We rode
over Salkantay Pass which is over 15,000 ft. above
sea level… pretty high for a flat lander like me. But
the altitudes, the water crossings, the bridges, and the
rocks are all in a day’s work for a professional mountain horse like Jigante. And yes, he lived up to his
name. He was big.
This isn’t any nose to tail tourist ride. Folks
considering this ride should read the trip description
thoroughly on the website and prepare accordingly.
Many of the trails are solid rock with little room to
negotiate. And those were the least worrisome ones.
Other trails have drop offs with cantering allowed
only on the wider mountain road which also have
drops offs… making those the most worrisome for me.
These are the Andes Mountains after all. Not to worry.
The horses were great at this. Everything happened
under the watchful eye of our head guide, Guido, who
missed nothing. Guido and his team were always

Machu Picchu - continued
there to meet any needs from assisting with horses to
taking pictures. The scenery was spectacular so a camera was a must pack item.
Taking pictures on horseback can be a bit
tricky and worthy of a bit of thoughtful consideration.
A fellow NATRC rider (who had taken this trip) tipped
me off on a wonderful water proof pommel camera
bag by Trail Max. Indeed it did the trick. Fitting
snuggly in front of my saddle I was able to “anchor”
my camera to it with a springy key ring and snap away
without worrying that I would “deep six” my camera
over the mountain’s edge.
At the end of the day I was feeling sorry for
the majority of the hikers who were housed in tents
and curled up in sleeping bags. ML of P provided
fine lodges, gourmet meals and nice warm beds for
our day’s end. The horses were well tended, fed and
blanketed for the night. All around the lodge staff
and wranglers were fantastic in tending to everyone’s
needs both horse and human. Winding down the riders
enjoyed great company, a wonderful Peruvian dinner and were briefed about the next day’s itinerary by
Guido. He always had something exciting to tell us
about. He clearly enjoyed his job.
The adventure isn’t all about horseback riding.
It’s about Machu Picchu, too. And getting there involved other means of transportation. Saying goodbye
to Jigante at the end of Day 5 and the last lodge was
tough. Jigante had carried me across some of the most
famous mountains in the world. He deserved a good
pat and a tender adios for making wonderful memories
with me. What a horse! That evening Guido regaled
us with amazing stories about the famous Lost City
of the Incas, Machu Picchu. We were all mesmerized
and ready for the grand finale. Would it match our
expectations?
Day 6 of our tour had interesting options. The
adventurous could take a memorable morning hike
through the mountain jungle to the Machu Picchu
Town (aka Aqua Calientes) bound train station. The
more leisurely inclined could choose a ½ day sipping
Peruvian coffee at the lodge and then van ride to the
train station. Either way the train ended at the wonderful Inkaterra Hotel with yet another glorious meal
and final briefing by Guido. Anticipation was building.
Bits & Pieces - May, 2013
Day 7: Machu Picchu. What can I say? It was
indeed a Grand Finale. The ancient mountain city
is much bigger and much grander than I anticipated.
The pictures of Machu Picchu don’t do it justice. This
rock hewn citadel is nearly intact after centuries of
abandonment giving it the eerie feeling that the inhabitants might return at any time. The gold seeking
Spaniards never found it to destroy it. I looked around
at my riding companions’ faces. The feeling seemed
to be mutual. We have traversed the mountains to
come here and we were all astounded…and amazed.
What a wonderful ending to such an interesting trip.
We were so happy that we made this journey together.
This is what memories are made of… Machu Picchu
Magic Memories.
Machu Picchu sits there still. Almost intact
and waiting for modern day visitors to come, admire…
and dream.
Happy trails from Suzanne and Princess Lola
(who stayed at her flat land home) and Jigante (who
is at home in the mountains)

• Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and
bull-strong.
• Keep skunks and bankers at a distance.
• Life is simpler when you plow around the stump.
• A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John
Deere tractor.
• Words that soak into your ears are whispered…....
not yelled.
• Meanness don’t just happen overnight.
• Forgive your enemies; it messes up their heads.
• Do not corner something that you know is meaner
than you.
• It don’t take a very big person to carry a grudge.
• You cannot unsay a cruel word.
• Every path has a few puddles.
• When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty.
• The best sermons are lived, not preached.
• Most of the stuff people worry about, ain’t never
gonna happen anyway.
• Don ‘t judge folks by their relatives.
• Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
• Live a good and honorable life, then when you get
older and think back, you’ll enjoy it a second time.
• Don ‘t interfere with somethin’ that ain’t bothering
you none.
• Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain
dance.
• If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is
stop diggin’.
• Sometimes you get, and sometimes you get got.
• The biggest troublemaker you’ll probably ever
have to deal with, watches you from the mirror
every mornin’.
• Always drink upstream from the herd.
• Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta
that comes from bad judgment.
• Lettin’ the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier
than puttin’ it back in.
• If you get to thinkin’ you’re a person of some influence, try orderin’ somebody else’s dog around.
• Live simply, love generously, care deeply, speak
kindly, and leave the rest to God.
• Don’t pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old
to fight, he’ll just kill you.
