Whiting/Robertsdale Faith Community Page 2 August 7, 2016 WORSHIP AND SPIRITUALITY SYNOD 2017 STEWARDSHIP “The Acts of the Apostles tells us that the early Christian community was of one mind and heart, sharing all their possessions in common for the good of all, especially the poor and needy. From the beginning, Christianity embraced the vision of a holistic stewardship, recognizing that all we possess is a gift from God and is meant to be shared with others for the building up of the Kingdom. When we link stewardship to evangelization and discipleship, we recognize that the one who follows Jesus will commit time, talent and treasure to his mission of salvation, love and peace.” (Bishop Donald J. Hying, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations…”) Pastoral Staff Saint John the Baptist Church 1849 Lincoln Ave. MAIN RECTORY NUMBER…….....(219) 659-0023 RECTORY FAX NUMBER…………...(219) 473-7551 E-Mail: [email protected] Website: www.mysjb.org Secretary, Becky Flores…….. Pope Benedict XVI writes in Caritas in Veritate that “The Church forcefully maintains this link between life ethics and social ethics, fully aware that ‘a society lacks solid foundations when, on the one hand, it asserts values such as the dignity of the person, justice and peace, but then, on the other hand, radically acts to the contrary by allowing or tolerating a variety of ways in which human life is devalued and violated, especially where it is weak or marginalized.’” (no. 15) As a gift from God, every human life is sacred from conception to natural death. The life and dignity of every person must be respected and protected at every stage and in every condition. The right to life is the first and most fundamental principle of human rights that leads Catholics to actively work for a world of greater respect for human life and greater commitment to justice and peace. The bishops have pledged to affirm the intrinsic value of human life and the dignity of every human being in a way that transforms the culture. To accomplish this they developed a series of goals that are part of their plan, “The Life and Dignity of the Human Person.” The plan includes ongoing education, prayer, policy, and advocacy efforts to mobilize the Catholic community on issues of life, justice, and peace. In this way, the Catholic community celebrates the gift of human life and witnesses to the Good News of Jesus Christ. (Taken from the USCCB website) Pilgrimage! I have met many kind people who will be new to our school family this year. We are also welcoming 2 new teachers, Ashley & David, to our faculty, strengthening our staff for our students. Fr. Mark has been a stabilizing presence in such a short time. With his direction, and Fr. Jerry’s experience and intellect, I am very confident that our parish and school will thrive. All have made Catholic education, and our students, a top priority in their lives. Many people have took the time to inquire about the progress of the school. For this, I am grateful for the constant show of support for our school. This has been one of the many reasons why St. John the Baptist has continued to flourish, especially in a time when other schools have unfortunately downsized, sit half-empty, or worse. It is this kindness and dedication I look to build off of this coming school year. It can’t be done without your continued support. We are in need of a few things to keep SJB functioning at its best. We need to complete the last 2 phases of our wiring project. We are in need of (at least) 2 new copiers that would allow us to keep our outsourcing costs low and would allow our faculty to work with the tools they need to every day. We also need to get an updated website running to communicate with current and potential families. We need your help! More importantly, we need your continued support, love, and strength. If you are interested in helping address our 3 major needs, please contact me today at [email protected]. FOREVER BLUE AND GOLD HEROES Many know the value of St. John School and there are some who literally go that extra mile to help St. John flourish. One St. John graduate, Rick Kasprzak, has unselfishly given of his time and treasure to St. John for many years. Recently, this 1966 graduate offered another five hundred dollar donation to help St. John School, we thank Rick for caring and his generosity! Once again the Pierogi Fest was a tremendous success and the task of parking cars on Saturday of the Fest by Forever Blue and Gold flourished thanks to many “heroes” from a variety backgrounds.
