Higher Skills
Higher Education
& Skills Courses
At Preston’s College we’ve been running
Higher Education and skills courses for
the last 10 years: it’s probably our best
kept secret.
Not only do our courses cost less than the same course at a
university, but being able to stay local means savings on both
transport and accommodation. As well as that, we also offer
a range of Access to HE courses, one year courses designed
to give you the skills and qualifications to access Higher
Education if you don’t have a Level 3 qualification.
Combine this with small cass sizes, 1-2-1 tutor support,
courses that are approved by the University of Central
Lancashire (UCLan) or University of Derby, and it means not
only do you pay less for your course but you get more from
it at the same time.
You can study part-time or full-time
in a range of subjects including:
- Aeronautical Engineering
- Biology
- Children & Young People
- Construction
- Counselling
- Dance
- Electrical & Electronic Engineering
- Energy & Power Engineering
- Performing Arts
- Project & Quality Management
- Public Services
- Science
- Teaching
Our range of Access
to HE courses include:
- Art & Design - Health & Social Care Professions
- Primary Teaching

- Have been living in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man for 3 years
before starting your course
- Be a UK national or have ‘settled status’ (this means there are no
restrictions on how long you can stay)
You may also qualify if you’re:

else in the European Economic Area (EEA)
- An EU national or a family member of one
- A refugee
- A migrant worker
- The child of a Swiss national
- The child of a Turkish worker
To find out more about your eligibility for an Advanced Learner Loan
please call 01772 22 55 22 or email [email protected]
PAY IN INSTALMENTS
If you don’t meet the criteria to study for free or an advanced learning loan
then you could pay in instalments by direct debit. To pay by direct debit your
course must cost a minimum of £150 and there must be at least three direct
debit payments (a maximum of 12).
Your first payment will be made when you enrol so please remember to have
your bank details to hand. Further payments will be made on the first of the
month. You must finish paying for your course one month before
you complete it.

There isn’t an age limit on becoming an Apprentice, it’s more
dependent on the qualifications you already hold. To see
if you’re eligible, contact The Job Zone on 01772 22 52 22.
How long is an Apprenticeship?
Apprenticeship courses vary in length depending on the job
role and your experience. On average, Apprenticeships take
between 12 and 24 months to complete.
Similarly, lots of adults see an Apprenticeship
as being a direct route onto the job ladder in
a competitive modern market.
What is an Apprentice’s wage?
Those in employment already tend to remain on their
current wage while studying an Apprenticeship. However,
the minimum wage for an Apprentice during their first year
is £3.30 per hour (October 2015), after which they are
entitled to the National Minimum Wage for their age group.
Here are five reasons why an
Apprenticeship could be for you:
1. Career Progression
If your employer agrees, you can study an Apprenticeship
as career development
2. Change Direction

If you fancy a career swap, you could start off as an
Apprentice in your new role
3. Earn While You Learn
Why pay for a qualification when you can get paid to do one?
4. Kick Start Your Career
How to get an Apprenticeship
It’s a great way to get yourself onto the job ladder
5. The Finish Line
Once passed, there could be an opportunity for a full-time
role, promotion or progression onto Higher Education
