them to fulfill your equipment and service needs for the year.
This year, we are excited to offer new content to the program.
Here are some examples:
›› Youth Climbing Team Programs: Financial Models and

KEYNOTE ADDRESS:
OPENING PLENARY SESSION:
CWA POLICY SEMINAR
Tommy Caldwell is renowned as one of the
world's top big wall and adventure climbers. But
indoor climbing is at the heart of who he has
become. As a teenager the climbing gym was
his community and motivator. He spent ten years
focused on competitions and today climbing
in the gym is central to preparing him for all his
adventures.
Developments in the Regulation of the
Climbing Wall Industry
MODERATOR: BILL ZIMMERMANN
Panelists: Robert Angell, Reb Gregg, Lance Brock, John O’Brien, Rick Vance
We will discuss the policy position of the CWA in regard to licensing climbing wall
facilities, liability protections, and certain employment matters related to workplace
safety. We will also discuss the impact or possible impact of new and emerging activities and business models on the regulatory landscape. We will focus on a few case

AWARDS CEREMONY
Walltopia Open International
Climbing Wall Design Contest
Walltopia's Awards Ceremony will focus on the best proposals received during an
open international design contest, as well as share some of the insights and reflections of the jury members on harmonization and the future of indoor climbing. The
Walltopia Harmonized System offers a mix-and-match modular system of climbing
walls of a fixed set of elements that allow thousands of climbing wall design combinations without limiting the design and the individuality of the walls.
The system brings a healthy dose of standardization in t-nut grid, panel shape, size,
and angle, which provides an opportunity to set routes that can be shared on a
global network worldwide. More benefits are benchmark climbs which allow climbers
around the globe to compare their achievements indoors, just like outdoors, global
access to the best route setters in the world and the ability of multi-location gym operators to achieve routesetting consistency.
PHOTOS COURTESY
Tommy Caldwell began climbing
not long after he learned to walk.
When his father, a larger-thanlife bodybuilder and mountain
guide, introduced him to the
world of adventure, he handed him an eternal flame. As a
teenager, talent and passion
led Caldwell to the top of the
competition climbing and sport
climbing circuits. Soon after, as
his appetite for adventure grew,
he became obsessed with the
incredibly demanding genre of big-wall free climbing. But in
his early twenties, Caldwell was held hostage by militants in
a harrowing ordeal in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan, and then,
upon returning home, he lost his index finger in a home remodeling accident. Caldwell emerged with a renewed grit and
ability to suffer, further cultivating his legendary determination.
His subsequent free climbing accomplishments on El Capitan
– the Mecca of the pursuit – remain unmatched, and most of
his peers consider Caldwell the best all-around rock climber in
the world. Although rock climbing remains his primary focus,
his 2014 climb in the mountains of Patagonia earned Caldwell
the prestigious Piolet D’Or award (France), for the year’s finest
alpine ascent. Later in 2014, he was chosen as one of National
Geographic’s Adventurers of the Year. His well-known 2015 first
free ascent of the Dawn Wall on El Capitan has been called the
hardest rock climb in history. Recently, at the age of thirty-six,
he became one of only a handful of living recipients of the
American Alpine Club’s highest distinction: Lifetime Honorary
Membership. Caldwell is a frequent contributor to Alpinist,
Climbing, and Rock and Ice magazines, and earns his living
as a professional climber. He lives in the town where he first
learned to climb, Estes Park, Colorado, with his wife, Becca,
and their two year-old son, Fitz.
The prize pool amounts to 60,000 EUR divided evenly in two main categories – boulders and top-rope/lead walls. There will be five awarded projects in each category.
The final selections will be made by an international jury.

Movement Class and a 3-week Advanced Movement Class. Through this
session, you will discover the value of
quality instruction and how to promote
it to your customers, transforming them
into dedicated members and advocates
of your facility.
This workshop is based on a proven
structure that has been in place for the
past 6 years at Climb Iowa. This Movement Class is instrumental in creating a
climbing community in a place where it
doesn’t naturally exist.
Working in conjunction with “The SelfCoached Climber” by Dan Hague and
Doug Hunter, these classes help new
climbers progress quickly. Additionally,
the class provides an opportunity to
grow the climbing community in your
gym through weekly interaction, ultimately resulting in a well-educated and
dedicated member base.

TEAM ABC – TRICKS IN THE BAG
Instructors: Robyn Raboutou,
Owner & Garrett Gregor, Coach
Robyn Raboutou, founder of ABC Kids
Climbing & Team ABC, will lead this
½ day workshop which focuses on all
aspects of youth climbing. ABC Kids
Climbing is world renowned for their
youth competition champions but the
programs’ foundation is not just about
individual champions. The program
focus is on ABC (Ability-Balance-Coordination) which is essential in all
youth sports as it gives athletes
confidence in their ability and themselves. These principles bring the best
out in every youth climber no matter
what their ability level. This comprehensive workshop will be broken into

sessions covering the basics of youth
programming/classes; youth outdoor
programs; youth route setting and
youth team organization.
UNDERSTANDING THE
LEARNING PROCESS
THROUGH MOVEMENT
Instructor: Arno Ilgner,
Desiderata Institute
Climbing movement provides a unique
opportunity to dissect the learning
process. Learning a skill, such as
movement, begins by learning gross
motor movements and then adding
successive layers of subtleties. These
subtleties have physical and mental
aspects. Most of the mental aspects
are unconscious to students. Becoming conscious of them can facilitate
and speed their self-learning process.
You’ll learn a new approach to the
learning process and how to help
students so they can continue that
process on their own.

tion and SOPs, the climbing gym experts at Eldorado and a panel of current
gym owners will identify key mistakes
commonly made by prospective climbing gym owners. Learn the pitfalls to
avoid and potential solutions..
PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS 2015
VISITOR AGREEMENTS:
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
ABOUT YOUR CONTRACTS
Instructor: Reb Gregg, Attorney at Law
You will explore the essential elements of
your Participant, or Visitor’s agreements
including “release” language, from title to
signature, and using current case law as
a guide, you will consider strategies for
protecting your program from the claims
of climbers and others. Participants in
this interactive session are encouraged
to bring their agreements to the seminar
for review and discussion
YOUTH CLIMBING TEAM
PROGRAMS: FINANCIAL MODELS
AND CASE STUDIES
Instructors: Kynan Waggoner, Tyson
Schoene, Kyle Clinkscales & Claudiu
Vidulescu
Three of the most successful youth
climbing coaches in the country will
present information about their youth
climbing team programs: their financial
models, staffing models, and program
models. Each model is different and
specific to each program: and quite
successful for different reasons. We
hope that attendees will walk away with
some new ideas about how to effec-
tively implement and manage a youth
climbing program at their facility. After
attending participants will have an
understanding of best practices for implementation and management of their
youth climbing team programs.
EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS
A DISCUSSION OF TOP ROPE BELAY
STANDARDS AND COMMON PRACTICES
Presenter: Matt McCorquodale & Dori Gleason,
The Delaware Rock Gym
The focus of this session is to allow attendees to engage and
discuss their belay policies, to see how they may differ across
various types of facilities, and to see how various attendees interpret current CWA standards and manufacturer instructions.
ADAPTIVE CLIMBING: MAKING YOUR
FACILITY ACCESSIBLE TO ALL
Presenter: Adam Fisher & Nate McKenzie, Paradox Sports
This session will introduce attendees to the world of adaptive
climbing. We will start with an overview of a variety of physical disabilities and common adaptations for climbing. We’ll
discuss strategies for making climbing facilities accessible
to people with disabilities, and the benefits of doing so. We
will also show that there truly are no limits to what adaptive
climbers can achieve.
ADVANCED CONCEPTS IN INSURANCE
Presenters: Mark Grossman, Will Jorgensen, Brian Fox, The
Monument Sports Group
Join us for a discussion on advanced insurance concepts including background checks, visitor agreements, what to do in
case of an accident in your gym and more. Mark Grossman of
Monument Sports Group will lead the discussion and examine
concepts deeper than just prices, policies, and coverages.
THE BELAY TEST ‐ WHEN GOOD ENOUGH IS
NOT GOOD ENOUGH
Presenter: Ed Crothers, American Mountain
Guide Association
The belay test has become a standard practice at climbing
facilities across the country. It can serve as an effective risk
management and screening tool. But the line between acceptable and unacceptable practices is easily blurred. This workshop will look at current industry standards and examine how
to ensure patrons are belaying within acceptable limits while
avoiding an onerous or intimidating testing process. Strategies
for taking advantage of the “teachable moment” will also be
examined. Target audience for this workshop is anyone who
conducts belay tests or trains staff to conduct this test.
BUILDING AN ATHLETIC CULTURE
Presenter: Gorden Cooley, Vertex Climbing Center
The primary focus of this presentation will be on how to design
an exercise area for optimal flow and function. With the proper
design elements, gym operators can run and market their exercise area much like a sports performance training facility. This
modern approach to gym design is far more cost effective and
adaptable than traditional models. It also allows you to provide
the largest variety of fitness programming into a space of any

COMPETITION PLANNING
Presenter: Scott “Skinny” Eney, Triangle Rock Club
As climbing becomes more popular the events have become
larger and more complex. Join Skinny from Triangle Rock
Club in a session all about competition planning to make
your next comp something everybody raves about. Skinny
will share his method and the tricks he has learned over the
years. Ample time will be set aside for discussion so everyone
can learn from one another.

CREATING A CREATIVE MARKETING STRATEGY
Presenter: Lauryn Claassen, Touchstone Climbing
By attending this session, you can expect to walk away with
a marketing plan for your gym at a price that your boss can’t
say no to. We’ll discuss how Touchstone Climbing has handled opening gyms in new markets, promoted events, and
increased our membership- all without a ‘Marketing Budget’.
We’ll cover: social media, graphic design, SEO, website,
media, press, and sustainable growth.

UNDERSTANDING THE LEARNING
PROCESS THROUGH MOVEMENT
Presenter: Arno Ilgner, Desiderata Institute, Inc
Climbing movement provides a unique opportunity to dissect the learning process. Learning a skill, such as movement, begins by learning gross motor movements and then
adding successive layers of subtleties. These subtleties
have physical and mental aspects. Most of the mental
aspects are unconscious to students. Becoming conscious
of them can facilitate and speed their self-learning process.
You’ll learn a new approach to the learning process and
how to help students so they can continue that process
on their own.
SMALL GYMS, BIG GYMS
Presenter: Ryan McCrary & Cam Hill, The Mountain Goat
In this session we will outline how we have grown a strong
membership base at a small facility and doubled our youth programs in the past year. We’ll discuss membership retention and
revenue growth in small gyms as we translate that to a much
larger, commercial facility. We have run a small (non-profit)
climbing gym for the past four years and experienced all sorts
of growing pains and struggles. We are currently upgrading
to a ground-up commercial facility and we will detail from
both program and business perspectives the challenges and
process for transitioning from a small gym to a big gym. We’ll
show you how we’ve grown year over year while still giving
away climbing for thousands of at-risk kids each year.
SOCIAL MEDIA, THE INTERNET,
DATA AND CLIMBING GYMS
Presenter: Ken Haller, Klimbz
In this session there will be an overview of the history of
climbing gyms; where they are now, how they got there, and
where they can go. There will be a discussion about how the
digital world is changing gyms, exercise, and the way people interact with their surroundings. Currently there is a lot of
useful data that is not being utilized by gyms. By using simple
digital systems, a gym can get useful information regarding
who, how, and what their members are doing and thus make
their gyms a better place for their community.

done right, offer not only a great revenue stream, but also serve
to solidify lasting relationships with both your customers and
industry partners alike. In this session we'll be covering the
benefits of creating and maintaining an extensive gear shop
in your climbing gym. Furthermore, participants can expect to
gain much of the knowledge necessary to implement a successful retail program in their facility. Expect a lot of audience
participation, poignant questions, and healthy discussion.

PRODUCT PRESENTATIONS
AMUSEMENT ACTIVITIES IN
CLIMBING GYMS
Presenter: Vasil Sharlanov, Walltopia
During this session we’ll explore the growing demand
for a designated kids area that does not require specific
knowledge of climbing and belaying techniques thus
targeting more of the mainstream public. We’ll have a look
at gyms that have embraced this direction of development
and how they manage to encourage more non-climber
adults and kids to enjoy the thrill and fun of climbing for
the first time.
FLASHED FLOORING
Presenters: Keith Nalepa & Mark Fraser, Flashed
We will have 3 stations to discuss systems, foams, and
cover materials.
›› Systems We will talk about Modular / Permanent bouldering systems and Route systems and their intended use.
›› Covers The differences and benefits of Vinyl, Cordura
and Composite fabric. Composite fabric is very unique and
extremely durable and only available through Flashed.
›› Foam We dissect the types of foam, layering, performance
and durability.
Gym owners, managers, and setters will know the
importance of a durable, easy to maintain, and clean
flooring system.
setters when it comes to getting an accurate read on your
community’s climbing tastes, and discuss how The Porch
can help you collect feedback, improve your setting, and
strengthen your gym’s community.
THE ECONOMICS OF AUTO BELAYS
Presenters: Kendra Eliason & Bill Carlson,
Head Rush Technologies
In this presentation, Kendra Eliason and Bill Carlson from
Head Rush Technologies will explain the many ways that you
can see financial gains and improve your customer experience through the use of auto belays. From years of working
with thousands of TRUBLUE Auto Belay customers, we have
learned the various strategies which can be used to grow
your climbing gym business. These tips cover everything from
placement to risk management, and you will leave the session
with actionable information on how to implement these strategies at your own gym. We will be sharing this information with
you in a 45 minute presentation, which will be followed by a
15 minute Q&A session.
VOLUMES - EHT HOLDS
Presenter: Michael Moore, Nicros
Every extreme hold that utilizes the Extreme Hold Technology™ (Patent Number 7,524,269) is up to 220% lighter than
a resin-poured counterpart of the same shape. Although the
thickness of the hold can be deceptive in describing the
strength of the hold, these holds are extremely strong – even
with their minimal thickness. Nicros has taken hollow backs
to the next level with Extreme Hold Technology™. Extreme
Hold Technology™ is simply the best method for making
large holds.
INSURANCE 101 - CWA MEMBER
INSURANCE PROGRAM
Presenters: Mark Grossman, William Jorgensen, Brian Fox,
The Monument Sports Group
In the fall of 2013, The Monument Sports Group became the
endorsed insurance provider of the Climbing Wall Association. Under this partnership, CWA members have access
to General Liability, Property, Worker's Compensation, Participant Accident Medical, Umbrella & Excess, and other
insurance products. This presentation will address the products, policies and services offered to CWA members through
Monument Sports. We will also take some time to answer
audience questions about insurance, the CWA program, and
The Monument Sports Group.
WALLTOPIA FLOORING
SOLUTION - CLIMBMAT
Presenter: Vasil Sharlanov, Walltopia
This session will look at the flooring solutions that Climbmat
offers as part of the overall design of climbing gyms to create
an attractive outfit for the entire facility. We’ll also take a look
into the only market solution that prevents injuries of height up
to 54ft - One More Life.
MANAGING THE “CLIMBING” OF
CLIMBING GYMS
Presenter: Andrew Palmer & Matt Londrey, The Porch
You work hard to bring your climbing gym to life. Equipment,
staff, marketing, and setting eat up budget and manpower.
But are you getting a return on the product you’ve worked so
hard to offer? Do your climbers have a way to engage with
the the routes they’re climbing on once they leave the gym?
Do your setters have a way to collect feedback about their
routes when they’re not around to hear it? In this session we’ll
discuss the challenges facing both gym managers and route
