Pastor Brett Shoemaker Come to me, all who are weary and heavily burdened… ‐‐‐Jesus It was the first day of First Grade. A friend of our family was the teacher in a classroom full of children who had, not too long ago, been kindergartners and therefore accustomed to a half day of school and a fair amount of recess. Right after lunch and a shorter‐than‐usual playtime, one young boy began to pack up his bag in preparation to go home. When the teacher informed him that they still had another several hours of learning before he could go, he said: “Who the heck signed me up for this?” In preparation for a new year ahead, I am taking inventory of the many opportunities to serve, learn, grow, and dive in around Faith Presbyterian Church: life groups, mission trips, classes on Sunday mornings and weekdays, worship, fairs, fundraisers, fellowships, and fantastic frivolities. Of course, as one working with youth and families, I was going to throw in a shameless plug about our current need for further leadership on Tuesday and Wednesday nights with our youth groups. But, that’s as much advertising as you’re going to get… How often do we pick up a gold nugget as a new opportunity only to find out that the treasure becomes a heavy burden as we walk a few miles down the road with it? We then cry out with the First Grader: “Who signed me up for this?” We have some fantastic ministries to join at Faith. But I believe we should encourage one another to pay attention to the rhythm of our lives, and we should be prepared to say “No” or “Maybe later” when an event or activity no longer allows us the space to really hear the voice of God. Our hope in the Youth, Children, and Family Ministries this year is that the curriculum, events, and conversations here will spill over into the rest of our lives, and homes, and workplaces, and communities. But that can only happen effectively if there is room left in those cups to spill into. Our culture has taken away much of our playtime and naptime, and filled it with oh‐so‐worthy commitments that leave little space to hear the beating of our own God‐formed hearts. Respond faithfully and joyfully to Jesus’ call to come before Him with your heavy burdens that you might find rest for your individual souls for the sake of the heart of this church community. Blessings, rest, and grace to you. In Christ, 2016 09 PresbyNews Page 3 of 3 Adult Formation Opportunities for September Monthly Adult Discussion Group New Book Begins September 7th at 2 p.m.! Desire of the Everlasting Hills: The World Before and After Jesus First Wednesday of the Month @ 2 p.m. (September 7) — Room 2 How did an obscure rabbi from a backwater of the Roman Empire come to be the central figure in Western Civilization? Did his influence in fact change the world? These are the questions Thomas Cahill addresses in his subtle and engaging investigation into the life and times of Jesus. Cahill shows us Jesus from his birth to his execution through the eyes of those who knew him and in the context of his time—a time when the Jews were struggling to maintain their beliefs under overlords who imposed their worldview on their subjects. Here is Jesus the loving friend, itinerate preacher, and quiet revolutionary, whose words and actions inspired his followers to journey throughout the Roman world and speak the truth he instilled—in the face of the greatest defeat: Jesus' crucifixion as a common criminal. Daring, provocative, and stunningly original, Cahill's interpretation will both delight and surprise. From the bestselling author of How the Irish Saved Civilization and The Gifts of the Jews, his most compelling historical narrative yet. The group meets at 2 p.m. the first Wednesday of each month. Jim Zazzera & others facilitate. All are welcome. Adult Sunday School Sunday Mornings, 10:15–11 a.m. Race and Reconciliation: The Confessions of 1967 and Belhar September 18 & 25 – Grace Room Facilitators: Kevin Menager and Jim Zazzera The Presbyterian Book of Confessions includes statements of faith that guide us in understanding scripture and help direct our lives of faith. Two particular confessions, the Confessions of 1967 and Belhar, are very significant as we look at issues of reconciliation in society today. Join us as we explore these statements and the themes of reconciliation, unity, and justice in a hurting world. An ideal way to continue the discussion we will begin at the All‐Church Retreat. All are welcome. Wednesday Evening Opportunity Traveling the Prayer Paths of Jesus Begins September 7 — Grace Room Leader: Alice Parente Learn from Jesus how to pray in this small group gathering. Would you be willing to take the reins and run with this event? Ellie Boyce has graciously provided all of the documentation related to scheduling and putting together the needed details. We would love for a person or small team to manage this event. Supper Club is a wonderful time to fellowship with other Faith members and get to know them better. The food is also delicious and no one person has to create the entire meal! Please contact Sheridan Smith for details, (916) 421‐8942. Sign‐up sheets should be available in December for hosting the dinners. Bon appétit! Peace & Global Witness Offering Come to the Table of Peace “Can God spread a table in the wilderness?” ‐‐‐Psalm 78:19 Psalm 78 offers a song about God’s “glorious deeds” and “the wonders” God has done. It stresses that God is continually and forever faithful to the people God has chosen. This is true, the psalmist writes, even though God’s people forget. Miracle after miracle is recounted, God’s presence and care throughout history are described, and the people still ask, “Can God spread a table in the wilderness?” We live in divisive times. Our experience of political, social, or religious divisions can make our lives, our communities, and our world feel like a wilderness. The news reports of violent acts seem only to increase. We watch millions displaced by war and hear of women and children battered and abused. We listen as messages of fear and hate, often based on race and ethnicity, grow louder and louder. Weapons crowd our streets, and tools created for destruction increase in their capacity each day. As people of God, we might be tempted to ask, “Can God spread a table in this wilderness?” However, we also know what the psalmist knew—that in our wilderness, God not only can, but does, spread a table of justice, reconciliation, transformation, unity, and peace. By participating in the Peace & Global Witness Offering this World Communion Sunday, we connect with and add our support to Presbyterian ministries that witness to Christ as the Prince of Peace. God spreads a table of justice, with the support of Presbyterian mission co‐workers, for women in the Congo abused by warring factions; a table of reconciliation for Presbyterians and their neighbors engaged in interracial conversations; a table of transformation where tools built for destruction become water pumps that give life. Giving to the Peace & Global Witness Offering is one way we come to God’s table of peace. Twenty‐five percent of this offering remains with our congregation to build up peace in our community, 25% expands our witness throughout the region by supporting ministries of peace and reconciliation in Presbyterian mid councils, and 50% supports the global witness to Christ’s peace through the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program and the reconciliation work of Presbyterian World Mission. Please give generously on Sunday, October 2, 2016, in gratitude to the God who spreads such a bountiful table of peace. 2016 09 PresbyNews Page 6 of 6 We are looking forward to seeing you at our September Presbyterian Women’s meeting. It’s a potluck! Team World Vision: This year, we are again partnering with Team World Vision in an effort to end the water crisis in Africa. “Faith and Friends,” our team of runners and walkers, will be participating in the California International Marathon (CIM), to be held on Sunday, December 4. Team members are now collecting donations as they train to run or walk the CIM. These donations can bring clean water to communities in need, changing lives forever! Faith and Friends team members would greatly appreciate your prayers and encouragement, as well as your financial support ($50 provides clean water for one person for life!), as they train for the CIM, either running in a relay team or going the full distance. You can see the team roster, read team members’ stories, and make your donations by visiting the Faith and Friends webpage at: http://www.teamworldvision.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donordrive.team&teamID=7274. There is still time to join the effort, as the official start of training is September 12. To learn more about Faith and Friends or to find out how you can participate – even if you are unable to run or walk the CIM – please contact co‐ captains Jill Whitney and Dave Reynen at 422‐2864 or [email protected]. 2016 09 PresbyNews Page 7 of 7 Summer Mission Trip to Winton, California This past July, 22 members of our church, young and old, travelled a few hours south to Winton, California, in the area of Merced. There we spent most of our time helping to build homes with Self‐Help Enterprises, a phenomenal group that works with families to build homes and create neighborhoods. The wonder of this organization is that the families who are accepted into the program pledge to commit 40 hours a week of “sweat equity” for almost a year to build these homes. That work serves as the down payment on their mortgage. Most of these individuals and families are people who have full‐time jobs and yet make more time in their busy lives to establish themselves in a home. Along with that, all families are required to work on each other’s homes (not just their own), and no one moves into the neighborhood until all the homes are completed. What this means is that members of this community will already have the experience of working together for their common good long before they “officially” become neighbors. Those of us who traveled to Winton had the privilege of working alongside these homeowners—nailing siding, installing tubs and showers, digging driveways, pulling electrical wire, and picking up trash. It was hard work in extreme heat, but the payoff was well worth it. At the end of the week, the families gifted us with a marvelous potluck of wonderful Mexican food! They were wonderful hosts and partners, and we all learned much together. In addition to serving with Self‐Help Enterprises, we helped for a day at the Merced Rescue Mission (ask us about demolition and moving cast iron tubs!) and at Love INC. Gracious members of Yosemite Church and Central Presbyterian Church provided us swimming pools and wonderful barbecues! Our time together in play, work, and worship was memorable and joyful. All of us are extremely grateful to those who supported us – especially through selling and/or buying at the fireworks booth. Finally, we want to offer a special thanks to Rudy Buehler, who did so much of the planning that made the trip the success it was! To all of you, think about this opportunity for next year for yourself. You won’t regret it! There will be lots of food and plenty of beverages to make this year’s fundraiser delicious as well as fun. The Buckin’ Bronco will be in the corral for the children to ride. The scarecrows will be perched in the pumpkin field, keeping the crows and ravens at bay. Donations for the raffle drawing and silent and live auctions are needed! Remember: all proceeds from this event go to the Pat Tatro Memorial Campership Fund. So bring in your excellent items, and we’ll get them auctioned or raffled off to a good home and raise money for scholarships at the same time. To donate items, contact Betty McClure or Jeff Simington (see below). We also have lots of volunteer opportunities available, so sign up in the narthex on Sundays. Tickets are on sale in the narthex after Sunday worship. Tickets must be purchased ahead of time so Fellowship can plan the meal accordingly; only a handful of tickets will be available at the door. Be sure to order your tickets by Sunday, September 18, 2016. Tickets: $10.00 per adult, $5.00 per youth (7-17 years), and free for children 6 and under. It will be held the Saturday after Thanksgiving, November 26, also known as a “Small Business Saturday.” We are actively seeking vendors to participate in this event. Anyone interested in reserving a table should contact Tammi Whitted at [email protected]. Many thanks to the Outreach, Fellowship and Mission elders and their teams for supporting this event that welcomes in our friends and neighbors. This year, the vendor fee of $30 per table will go towards the One Child One Chicken ministry of Moses and Emily Osoro. Please see the message below from Moses and Emily. “We want to thank the Mission Team for reaching out to help the One Child One Chicken program through the Christmas Boutique. So far we have reached almost 60 families (women and their children) with the 350 chickens we have. Our main goal for this year and the beginning of next year is to raise money to install electricity and also to purchase a hatchery. The hatchery will help us get more chicks, and therefore we will reach more families. We are currently operating the chicken feed machine manually, and because of that we are not getting enough feed from it. Electricity will help us to operate the hatchery and run the feeding machine more efficiently. Installing electricity is approximately $1,000 and purchasing a hatchery is $1,500. We pray for the success of all this work that we have been called to do to support God's people. Please feel free to contact us in case you have any questions. Thank you and God bless.” ‐‐Emily and Moses Osoro. 2016 09 PresbyNews Page 11 of 11 FAITHPRESBYTERIANCHURCHPRESBYTERIANWOMEN ProgramYear2016–2017 AllwomenareinvitedtothePresbyterianWomen’s(PW)Biblestudyandlunchtimeprograms, heldmonthly SeptemberthroughJune. A lot has happened since the last time I wrote. To be honest, it is pretty difficult to keep up with school, life, ministry, and all the relationships I want to keep up with in the USA and TZ. That is why I am so thankful that I have a bit of a break from school, so that I can spend some time writing to you through this prayer letter as well as email and Facebook. I am in the process of switching over to more and more email and less and less snail mail. If you know anyone that receives my letter via snail mail, please help them get connected to me through email. My email is [email protected] and I am on Facebook. Talking about Terrorism As you know, France has experienced some major terrorist attacks in the last year (as have many other countries). But it has been interesting to have the opportunity to talk with a few people about them. I met with one of my neighbors over a long dinner. Her name is Jasminka and she is devastated by the recent attacks. She is actually considering leaving France as she believes that France is currently a target for terrorism (I think she may be right). She is distraught by the evil she sees in the world with no apparent way to stop it. With my current level of French (pray this will grow and grow) I was able to talk to her a bit about the Lord. I would love to present a crystal clear gospel message to her as we continue to grow in our friendship. Pray that she will find the Lord as she is clearly searching. Speaking in Chapel on Philippians 4 In some ways it feels like I am one of the "big kids" at the school now. When I first arrived at my school I spoke zero French. I saw the more advanced students (meaning they spoke some French) as the big kids and I was a little kid (when you don't understand anything it is pretty easy to feel like a small child). But, now that I have been here seven months I am starting to grow up and the school expects more of me. The picture above was taken on the day that I shared a few minutes in French during chapel on how Philippians 4 (quoted below) has impacted my time here learning French. When I start to worry about French, or my cultural adaptation, or any of the other gazillion things I could potentially worry about, I try to remember Philippians 4 and give all of my thoughts, fears, and worries to the Lord! Philippians 4:6‐7 "...do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understand, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Last Leadership Cohort (for now) In June I flew back to the states for seven days (including travel time) to participate in the last Leadership Cohort (in my group) with Reach Global. It was a great time of thinking about how to be the kind of leader that encourages others, inspires people to work in areas they are gifted, and remember that we can do nothing without the God of the Universe! Please Keep France and the Ministry Here in Your Prayers! -For the ladies that I have been able to share spiritual things with‐‐Francoise, Martin, Cecile, and Jazminka. ‐Pray God will continue to give me time with Hassika, my MBB friend, as I just love to be around her and she also teaches me so much about French culture, Islamic French culture, and French. ‐For encouragement and patience with language learning. ‐For the church plant, Connextion (eglise‐connexion.fr) ‐For a good break filled with lots of French people, French language, and time to catch up with those in both Tanzania and the USA. ‐Pray for this culture that has largely forgotten God. Pray that God will use the recent attacks to spark spiritual interest. ‐Keep praying for Tanzania, lots of awesome things are happening in the Asian ministry there. So exciting. I am happy to share more if you have interest. ‐There are a few people that have been brought to my attention as potential future teammates. Please keep all of these types of conversations of exploration in your prayers. Pray God will bring the right people to this team! Kathy Keller ReachGlobal, Paris France/ Email: [email protected] /Sype: kathyindar/Facebook:Kathy Keller Gracious Ethiopia By Cathy Philleo “With grace.” These two words epitomize the attitude of the Ethiopians and the World Vision Team we had the pleasure of visiting last April. It was our dear friend Tamiru who set this tone for our trip. In one of the poorest countries in the world, hope springs eternal. I never could have imagined myself planning a trip to this country. We all dream of going on safari and seeing the great wonders of the world, but this experience, which God created for us in the far reaches of Ethiopia, was to show us that it is not just the beauty that we see around us, but the incredible beauty that we can experience within. For the people of Ethiopia are by far the most gracious, loving, Christian people I have ever met. I sensed this graciousness from the moment I walked through customs. For there, standing with bouquets of flowers to greet us, was Tamiru – Mr. Gracious himself. From there we continued on to our hotel, where we met Mulay’s wife and child, who invited us to their house for a true home‐cooked Ethiopian meal. Such graciousness. The next day we met our trip drivers – the driver of our vehicle was named Adamoo – and they could not have been more gracious and accommodating. Before the end of our trip, our drivers had become our friends. Our first stop was the World Vision Headquarters for the Abaya Region. Here we met the staff who, though nervous like us, reached out to make us feel welcome. Here we were treated each day to the traditional Ethiopian coffee service. Such graciousness. Our mission, of course, was to observe and take notes on the World Vision projects. I was prepared. I had paper and pen in hand, ready to let you all know of the progress World Vision was making with our monetary donations. The World Vision staff was making every effort to show us the physical changes that had taken place: improved access to clean water, education, health and literacy centers – all amazing! But it was the people, everywhere we went, who were more awe‐inspiring than any physical building we observed. From the staff of World Vision to the community‐run Well Committee, to the teachers, the doctors, and all the volunteers of every community who offered their time, their strength, their compassion, their graciousness. This is what stood out to me more than anything. Into each village we drove, expecting to meet the next sponsored family and instead we met the village. At every stop we made, the people of the village would meet us at the house to greet us, to practice their English with us, to play games and to laugh. Cultures that are 10,000 miles apart were connecting with a word or two in Amharic or English, or simply with a smile. Such graciousness. I believe God’s lesson for us here on earth is to learn that we are all the same no matter where we live. We all have the same wants for our family and friends, we all want to do good by others, we all strive to be in God’s good graces. It is the people of Ethiopia who have figured out how to do all these things with GRACE. God bless them. 2016 09 PresbyNews Page 14 of 14 Youth Updates SEPTEMBER 2016 (Grades 6-8) (Grades 9-12) WHAT A SUMMER!
