PASTOR'S NOTES
The Ultimate Coach………….I opened the paper this
morning (July 23, 2011) to find out that Tiger Woods had
fired his long time caddie, Steve Williams. I think that
Steve Williams had been with Tiger for 14 or 15 of his
major championships. Steve Williams was not Tiger’’s
coach. He had a swing coach and sports psychologist,
and who knows what other type of coach. But Steve
Williams was the one in the heat of the battle who
coached Tiger. That’’s what a caddie does; he walks
along and helps the golfer to be his/her best. A couple
of nights ago I watched part of a movie about a man who
loved coaching little league baseball, and who was struggling in his marriage. In very difficult times with his wife,
he found solace in coaching, and the values he learned
while coaching helped him to remain faithful in his marriage. Over the years I have had some great coaches,
good coaches, and some poor coaches. My dad was
assistant coach of my little league team and I would say
that he was a very good coach. I think the best coach I
ever had was the linebacker coach for my pee wee Pop
Warner football team, Coach Runner. He had a way of
connecting with the players, but he was not afraid to
push us and challenge us to do more. He could affirm
and praise us comfortably, and he could give us a stiff
chewing out when needed. He did not play favorites.
The one who hit hardest and played with the most passion was the one who started and got the most playing
time. He was great at teaching techniques and equally
good at motivating us. The other day I preached at the
7:30am Mass and told people that God is not so much a
““J”” for judge as a ““C”” for cheerleader. God is cheering
for us, wanting us to be the very best person we can be.
This is true, but maybe a better image of God is that of a
““C”” for coach. There are both men and women coaches
and what is so special about a coach is that they give
themselves for the good of the athlete. A great coach
cares about the athlete, and not just about how the athlete does in competition. At the last two winter Olympics,
as I was watching my nieces compete in the Biathlon, I
was particularly taken by the coaches. In both Vancouver and Torino, there was an uphill climb at the end of
the course prior to entering the stadium to shoot.
Coaches would position themselves at the bottom of the
hill and run alongside the athlete as she climbed the hill
into the stadium. They would be shouting words of encouragement, and at the same time, letting them know
where the other athletes were. I see God as that kind of
““C”” coach. God journeys with us in life, encouraging us
and telling us what we need to know to do our best.
Great athletes need great coaches. If we want to be
great Christians, we need a great coach. To be a saint
we need to have someone walking with us and helping
us to be the best we can be. There is a rich tradition in
our Church of people choosing a spiritual director to help
them as they live the Christian journey. Having a spiritual mentor or coach; that is, a spiritual director, can be a
good thing as we seriously try to live our life ““in Christ””.
However, the ultimate coach for the follower of Jesus is
the Lord. The Lord, and the Lord alone, is the one who
always wants the best for us, always gives us the truth,
and never abandons us. My homily the other day at the
7:30am Mass was not perfectly correct. God as ““C””
coach, the ultimate coach, is one of the best (not the
only) images for God. Seeing God as coach helps us to
turn to God and really listen. Listen for the only advice
that is 100% suited for me, to help me to be the person I
was created to be. In prayer, we listen to our Coach, the
Lord. Then we go out and put into practice what our
God is telling us. This is what makes Great women and
men of God!!

““Introduction to our Catholic Faith””
This summer Fr. Efrain will be teaching a series for adults
here at our parish. The purpose of these classes is to answer basic questions that we many times have as Catholics. Among the discussions will be the question of evil,
why are there so many illnesses, natural disasters in the
world if our God is loving God? We will also look at the
relationship between Tradition and Sacred Scriptures,
among other things. The English classes will take place
every Tuesday, beginning July 19th through August 29th in
Founders Hall. We invite you to come in and grow in our
rich Catholic Faith.

Just Faith: A call to Renew Our Hearts and
the World
Offered in our Parish again this fall!
Scripture frequently calls us to care for the
poor, the orphans, the vulnerable, and the
strangers. Who are these people in our world
today? Responding to the world’’s needs takes
reflection, study, prayer and community. All of
these are offered in a 30 week program which
includes weekly meetings, regular reading,
retreats and immersion experiences. We will
offer this program again beginning the week of
September 18. Watch the upcoming bulletins
for more information!
““The Just Faith program that I attended
formed a community of caring adults with acceptance, education and spirituality. In addition I learned so much about the history and
current programs of Social Justice in the
Church that I am filled with gratitude for my
Catholic Faith. I feel renewed and more prepared to choose a direction in future work in
Social Justice.”” Mary Jo Berand.

No tenía favoritismos. Quien
Veo a Dios
Ver a Dios

Tales sacerdotes NO pertenecen a
permitidos).
