KILLEAGH / INCH
COMMUNITY COUNCIL
The first meeting of 2009 was held in Killeagh Hall on Thursday
8th January with 17 members in attendance.
Sgt. Eoin Buckley from Youghal Garda Station who is the
Sergeant in charge of the Killeagh/Inch area had been invited to
address the meeting and to answer any queries the Community
Council had on garda matters arising in our Parish.
Illegal parking in Killeagh, speeding through the village, and concerns regarding anti-social behaviour were discussed. The main
issue which arose from this discussion is the fact that there is only
one guard based in Killeagh Garda Station to oversee the total area
of Killeagh/Inch Parish together with Castlemartyr and Mogeely.
Though the population of these areas has increased greatly over
the last few years there has been no increase in local garda manpower in our area. It was agreed at the meeting that representations should be made to our T.D.’s and County Councillors to try
and increase the number of gardai serving in our community.
When local election time comes by please remember to lobby our
local representatives on this very important issue.
We would like to thank Sgt. Buckley for taking the time to attend
our meeting and also to thank our local Garda Dave Leahy for his
work in our local area.
County Council Matters
The Community Council continue to lobby the County Council on
a range of matters affecting our local community including the following matters:
Upgrade of water supply in Killeagh village - Once again no
progress can be reported on this matter despite repeated efforts to
secure a starting date from the County Council. Efforts to secure
a starting date will continue.
Footpaths - The footpaths in Killeagh village continue to deteriorate. The footpath outside the local national school is particularly dangerous and this has been reported on a number of occasions.
Road Markings - The road markings have faded throughout
Killeagh village particularly at Cork Road corner where the double yellow lines and the yellow box is now completely faded.
This is a dangerous junction to exit from and the faded road markings are now exacerbating the problem. A request to deal with
this matter has also been forwarded to the Council.
Lighting at Cois Cille - A request to erect public lighting at Cois
Cille has been forwarded to the Council on a number of occasions. Residents of this estate have approached the Community
Council to enlist their help with this matter. The lack of public
lighting in this area is a matter of grave concern to the residents
of this estate many of whom have young children.
Road at Inch School - The state of the road surrounding Inch
school has also been discussed at our monthly meetings. A large
number of parents are parking in this area and urgent action is
needed to help to facilitate safe parking around the school and the
safety of parents and children on a daily basis.
High Road
Again there has been concern raised at our monthly meetings
regarding the verges of the High Road. Many residents have
raised this issue with the Community Council who have contacted
the County Council regarding same. Damage to vehicles has been
reported and concern for the safety of road users has been
expressed due to the verges of the road being in a very dangerous
state.
WEB-SITE - It is hoped to have our new web-site up and running
shortly. General information about our local area and local facilities and organisations will be available on this web-site. More
details at our February meeting.
PLAYGROUND - The sub-committee elected to deal with this
matter are still researching their options with a view to constructing a playground in our community. It is hoped that progress will
be made on location, grants etc in the near future.
Killeagh/Inch Community Council will hold their A.G.M in Inch
Hall on Thursday 12th February at 8 p.m. All sub-committee
members please attend and a report from each sub-committee will
Hall on Thursday 12th February at 8 p.m. All sub-committee
members please attend and a report from each sub-committee will
be requested.
The Community Council would like to wish all in our Parish a
very Happy 2009 and if you have any concerns about any local
matter please contact your local rep.
The Closure of the Post
Office in Killeagh Village
The village of Killeagh in East Cork has been without a postal
service for three months. The removal of the postal service by An
Post has let to a great deal of hardship and inconvenience for the
most vulnerable members of our society. For example, pensioners
without cars now have to ask for lifts to either Youghal or
Castlemartyr in order to collect their pensions. Anyone who doesn’t own a car is in a similar predicament if they wish to avail of a
postal service.
An Post have not given any commitment on when, or if, the postal
service will be re-instated in this parish of over 2,000 people.
The Community Council are now in contact with our elected representatives in the Dail and the County Council together with An
Post to seek the re-instatement of our postal service as soon as
possible.

Youghal Town Council January Meeting
By ChristyParker
Report of the Town Clerk on Matters Arising from the Monthly
Meeting of Youghal Town Council held on 8th December 2008.
ESTATE ENHANCEMENT WORKS UNDER THE RAPID
PROGRAMME:
1.Three Estate Enhancement Projects are due to commence on 2nd
February next for three local authority estates. The estates concerned are Blackwater Heights, Ardrath Crescent and Raheen
Court and the value of the projects amounts to 8,285.00. The
projects will focus on enhancing the physical landscape with a low
maintenance longterm theme.
WATER & SEWERS:
1.The reservoirs are currently operating at full capacity with an
average daily demand of approximately 590,000 gallons per day.
A full EPA audit of the water facilities at Boola was undertaken on
Tuesday 19th December last. A list of improvement works (copy
attached) has issued to the County Council this week, the majority of which should be completed by the end of Spring.
2. The foul drainage system is operating satisfactorily and to my
knowledge there are no operational problems with any of the
County Council Pump Stations. A full information report on the
current status of the Youghal Main Drainage Scheme is on the
agenda of tonight’s meeting.
DEVELOPMENT PLAN 2009 - 2015.
1.The final Development Plan meeting is due to be held on
Monday 26th January next to adopt the plan with or without
amendments. The final adopted plan will then be published within two weeks of that date.
BUDGET 2009:
1.The adopted budget for 2009 is now being implemented across
all functions of the Town Council. Consequently because of the
nature of the expenditure cut-backs a series of meetings will be
held with all staff to review current work practices, identifying
areas where improvements are required and examining what levels of service is required in certain areas and what levels of service can be delivered. Challenging times both nationally and locally dictate that this review be taken in a swift and decisive manner.
De VALERA STREET CAR PARK:
1.The appointed contractor Hogan Groundworks and Civil
Engineering has indicated in writing to the Council today that they
are not in a position to complete the contract on the car park.
Consequently our Engineering Consultants will be carrying out a
review of the works completed and remaining works with a view
to tendering out the balance of the works.
Youghal Town Council Superintedents Report
Report of the Town Clerk on matters arising from the Town
Superintendents report at the monthly meeting of Youghal Town
Council held on 8th December 2008
Petition from the residents of Woodview Court re the lack of public lighting in the area: I have issued a warning notice to the
developer and forwarded the latest information/ documentation to
hand on 22/12/2008.
- Disabled Parking Space between Windmill Hill and Xtravision
on North Main Street: A full audit of all available car parking
spaces is required prior to allocating any further spaces as disabled
spaces. The amount of disabled parking available in Youghal currently far exceeds the national average.
- Illegal use of the disabled parking space outside Xtravision on
North Main Street: I have referred this matter to the Traffic
Warden to monitor and enforce any illegal use of this space.
- Provision of a Bus Shelter at the Post Office on North Main
Street: I attach for your information copy letter received from Bus
Eireann dated 8th December 2008 on the matter.
- Gritting of roads and footpaths during cold weather: Youghal
Town Council have a Section 85 agreement with Cork County
Council in respect of all urban roads. Consequently I have referred
your concerns to Paul Murray, Executive Engineer, Cork County
Council.
- Provision of extra lighting on Jail Steps: As the Members are
aware a development proposal is currently being appealed to An
Page 1
Bord Na Pleanala at this location. This proposal provides the
opportunity to look at all services on the steps as part of this development.
- Provision of toilets for the Adoration Chapel: This is not a
Council issue. The Adoration Chapel is in the ownership of
Youghal Parish and as such this is a private matter.
- Sweeping of Jail Steps: A thorough clean up of this area was carried out last week. This area is being littered by the public generally and by consistent users of the steps. The identity of some of
these people is known to the locals who should directly inform
Youghal Town Council of that identity so that enforcement action
can be taken.
- Provision of recycling facilities at the Front Strand: The required
services to facilitate this recycling point have been installed. A
decision will be taken in the New Year as to when it will be opened
for business.
- Bollard at Dominic Collins Place: I have asked the Town
Foreman to ensure the replacement of this bollard in order to preserve the security of the area.
- Condition of wall at Lower Jail Steps: This matter was referred
to Paul Murray, Executive Engineer, Cork County Council and
David Kelly Partnership to monitor and make recommendations
on some time ago.
- Chippings at Blackwater Heights: This matter is being addressed
in the New Year under the Rapid programme and should be complete by the end of February next. In the meantime the area has
been swept and cleaned.
- Provision of Car Park at Sarsfield Terrace: This matter is being
addressed in the New Year under the Rapid Programme and the
tender process should commence for same in early Spring.
If any Member has any questions in relation to any of the above or
wishes to discuss my responses further please contact me directly.
Power Boat setback:
Town Clerk Liam Ryan informed the members that the P1World
Power Boat Championships, would not be coming to Youghal in
2009. Mr Ryan read an email from Aidan Foley of Medaza, the
company holding Northern European rights of the World
Championship from 2009-13, which stated that Failte Ireland
could not meet the funding requirements, in the present economic
climate. He added that he remained committed to promoting
Youghal as a major centre for maritime activities and was working on alternatives to this end. Mr. Ryan said a number of options
for festival based on water activities are under consideration.
* (P1 Not Sunk -see report elsewhere in this issue)
Congratulations:
Cllr Mary Linehan Foley congratulated Mayor Olly Casey’s wife
Anne, on her retirement as cleaner at the council’s offices and proposed that Mrs Casey be afforded a civic reception. Mayor Casey
expressed his gratitude for the sentiments. The Mayor said "the
Casey dynasty’s association with the council is coming to an end",
following his mother’s link for 33 years, his wife’s 27 and his own
43 year tenure, which will terminate on his retirement in June.
Cllr Linehan Foley also congratulated brothers Cillian and Cian
McCarthy from Blackwater Heights on being the first two brothers to win a Youghal snooker tournament ’They have won loads of
tournaments and it shows there are worthwhile youth activities in
Youghal," she added.
The councillor also wished "all the Youghal lads in Chad a happy
New Year" on behalf of the council and concluded with best wishes to Pa Murphy on his retirement from the ambulance service.
She said Mr. Murphy had declined the honour of a civic reception,
citing his love of the job as having been reward enough.
Town Foreman’s Report:
Illegal dumping, bollards, disabled bay, no sleep and slime
Cllr Liam Burke sought an update on the public lighting situation
at Parklands, of which a petition from residents had been
received. He also complained that the Mall House (gates) "appear
to be locked more often than open" and he sought solution to a
blocked gully outside Seafield House.

Cllr Sandra McLellan said nearby residents are complaining of rat
infestation at the derelict Spinning Wheel site, despite temporary
respite from the problem following a visit from Rentokill last
summer. She had contacted Environmental Health, who were
expected to investigate the problem.
Cllr Michelle Hennessy said the rockery at the entrance to Dermot
Hurley Estate is severely impeding the view of motorists exiting
onto the Spa hill. "It’s a built up area now and has a lot of traffic,"
she added. A missing public light at The Green, Upper Cork and
two signs facing the wrong way at Summerfield Cross also needed resolving.
Cllr Michael Beecher stressed that illegal dumping is widespread
and cited the New Line and the Quarry Road as examples of a
major problem. He sought an update on Chapel Lane, as residents
are fearful for their safety and property and advised it would be
better closed. An abandoned, vandalised car in Dolphin’s Square
needed removing, he concluded.
Cllr Mary Linehan Foley said residents at Raheen Park wanted a
bin in the area removed as it is attracting illegal dumping. She said
it was particularly bad over Christmas. It was agreed that it was
people from outside the area were largely responsible. Cllr
McLellan said she had brought photos to the town clerk and the
bin is to be removed. She had also received similar complaints
about Sweetfield and other areas.
Cllr Linehan Foley said a disabled space is needed for 38 Raheen
Park and that recently neither an ambulance nor a doctor could
adequately access an ill woman there. She said she had advised the
resident to put a no parking sign on her gate.
Cllr Linehan Foley said bollards are urgently needed to prevent
cars further destroying the footpath at Dr. Kennedy’s Place. Two
holes with protruding concrete pose a danger at Chapel Lane and
greenery on the Spa needs pruning, she added. The councillor said
the new footpath installed at a house in Dominic Collins Place
needs extending as it has created a drop that endangers people in
the dark.
Cllr Barbara Murray advised that a loose Eircom cover at the
intersection of Ashe Street and Windmill Hill is noisy and causing
sleep deprivation. She said a longer lasting chemical is need to
treat slime on the slip at Nealon’s Quay, Cllr Murray repeated Cllr
Burke’s call for an update on lighting at Parklands and said overhanging trees on Cork Hill need cutting back.
Cork County Council Items:
Ponding, paths and post office
Mayor Olly Casey said the ponding (i.e. flooding) in the vicinity
of Nagle House was "an absolute disgrace." He described it as
dangerous for cars and a recurring nightmare for pedestrians who
risked getting soaked and also projects a poor image of the town.
It would make one "ashamed" to be associated with it, proceeded
the former water curator before adding that it would not take a
work of genius to resolve the problem by digging access to a gulley or creating a new gulley. A similar situation persisted at
Gallagher’s Terrace he added. The Mayor concluded that the green
walls on Nagle House are turning further green through algae generated by splashing. Town engineer Paul Murray said the issue
will be resolved "in a month or so" along with the Quarry Road
and Gallagher’s Terrace.
Cllr Murray described ponding and water-filled potholes at
Seafield and especially the entrance to DR Developments back to
Seafield/Kilcoran Place. She said a huge amount of what
appeared to be surface water was apparent at the bus stop by
Farrell’s pub and there is yet more ponding at Millfield Abbey. She
asked if the public lighting contract had yet been awarded. She
proceeded that the walk from the entrance to Sarsfields terrace to
Cork Hill via Raheen Road is "dangerous" given the sporadic
pavement and speeding traffic. The Chestnut Drive/Millfield areas
needed footpaths, while the one at Summerdale lawn is totally
overgrown.
Cllr Liam Burke asked for a manager’s report on the library situation in Youghal regarding a new one. He asked for an update on
the unfinished road surface outside new houses near Summerdale
Lawn as well as missing concealed entrance sign that the developer removed. He referred "once again" to footpaths "like jigsaws"
in the vicinity of South Abbey, Strand Street, Tallow Street, Mall
lane and Water Street.
Cllr Linehan Foley once more sought an update on the request for
bollards at the ’accident waiting to happen’ site in Greencloyne,
whereby vehicles parked across from Crowley’s shop are obstructing motorists’ views as they exit the nearby estates. She again dismissed a previous Co. Council argument the expense was an issue.
She appealed for bollards at Dr. Kennedy’s Place against footpath
parking.
The councillor said the forthcoming 3 entrance to the landfill
would lead to further illegal dumping, regardless of the 1 reduction per bag. ’The town is littered with rubbish with no entrance
charge and the 3 will make people even less inclined to recycle,’
she predicted. She said she understood the essence of recycling
facilities was to encourage the practice, not charge them money
for it. Cllr Linehan Foley described the bus stop at the post office
is "a total disaster" due to illegal parking pre-empting buses stopping in the middle of the road and holding up traffic. "It was crazy
to put a stop there in the first place. The post office is the most
used place in town. Nowhere else in the world has a bus stop outside a post office!" she argued
The councillor said she had personally monitored the situation
over Christmas and observed that even elderly drivers were illegally parking. This, along with drivers dropping people off and
awaiting their return, was leading to buses unable to pull in.
People parking illegally in the adjacent disabled spot further exacerbated the problem. "So the bus has to stop in the middle of the
road and the whole town is held up," she stated, adding, "We complain to taxis and Wizer Bins for the same thing." She wondered
what could be done about it. Town engineer Paul Murray said the
location had been agreed following consultation with Bus Eireann
and the Garda.
Mayor Casey said only "very selfish people" were abusing the
provision of both the bus and disabled bays. "They are inconveniencing elderly people who rely on the bus service to get to the
post office and banks," he added. "In Cork city they’d have to walk
miles from a car park," he noted. He did not however, perceive a
problem with people being dropped off "for a few seconds." Cllr
Hennessy suggested moving the stop a few feet forward but Cllr
Beecher said the bus could not properly park there. He advocated
clamping miscreant vehicles instead.
Cllr Sammy Revins said the traffic warden had recently issued
tickets at the post office and those people won’t park there again."
It was agreed that increased enforcement might go a long way to
resolving the issue. Cllr Beecher asked if the ’cutting’ in the road
at Market Square could be eliminated and was told ’the developer’
was responsible. He warned that the yellow box needed extending
at the Lighthouse Hill entrance to Carlton Place as parked cars
would hinder emergency service access. Cllr. Murray added that a
planter box on the adjacent footpath is a further problem as it
obstructs vision when exiting onto the road. Cllr Beecher also
asked that the footpath between Meadow Valley and Summerdale
Lawn be trimmed back.
Tenders:
The Town Clerk read three tenders for the Youghal Historic Trail
signs. The applicants were Classicast Ltd, Signiatec Ltd. and
Castit Ltd. The quotes ranged from 42,000 to 51,000 approximately and the cost will be covered by Failte Ireland
Economic Impact of Irish Walled Town Day (Medieval festival) in Youghal in August 24th 2008.
The Town Clerk quoted from a detailed survey assessment conducted by KPMG on behalf of the Heritage Council. He said an
outlay of 15,000 had reaped an estimated income of 479,000 for
the region. The Youghal event is considered the Republic’s biggest
Walled Town Day and, said Mr. Ryan "is being used by the
Heritage Council of Ireland as a template for the IWT’s promotion
for 2009."
Cllr Burke said such independent confirmation was very gratifying. It had produced attendances of over 5,000 on two consecutive
years, with a 3000% return on investment.
Youghal Town Council January Meeting

Heritage Council Grants Programme:
The Town Clerk said only one application had been received with
two more expected. He explained it was in lieu of forthcoming
’crown reduction’ and ’wind sailing’ on top heavy trees -following
removal of rotting trees- at St. Mary’s College Garden, along with
tree replanting. An application for 90% grant aid would be made
for the approximate 40,000 cost.
Shanavine Cul De Sac:
There had been no submissions and the route will now be designated a public road. Submission by Rectory Road residents
Association: The council have agreed to assume management of
the area.
De Valera Street Car Park:
Mayor Olly Casey said he would be sticking by his guns on this
lengthy saga, that the residents be given (17) designated parking
spaces. Town Manager Patricia Power repeated that she could not
possibly sanction the decision (taken by the council last
September) to designate the spaces in lieu of subsequent legal
advice that it could be unlawful.
Cllr Murray reiterated her stance that she had to represent the
town as a whole and the "fairest" solution would be to give the residents non-designated spaces in line with free parking. Otherwise
there would be empty spaces in which nobody could park. She
also believes the issue of emergency access would be facilitated
by making the street one-way, upward.
The mayor’s face
As the car park now needs to be re-tendered before it can be completed, Cllr Murray advised this be done, the car park opened and,
if necessary, the legalities be contested thereafter. Cllr Linehan
Foley however, intruded to say that she had arranged for the residents, who are generally unhappy with the furore, to meet the
Town Clerk. "This needs to be discussed openly with the residents
involved instead of us running round in circles," she said. Cllr
Murray concurred that the residents "are reasonable people" and
believed a resolution could be reached. Mayor Casey’s plea that he
also be present was accepted, although Cllr Linehan Foley
informed him she was unhappy with ’the face you have on you,’ by
contrast to his usual "passionate" visage. He responded that his
face was the one with which he was born and hadn’t been "aimed
at" her. He added that the centre of Youghal faced having its "residents driven out like in Dublin" and being unsafe to walk
through.
Motion from Cllr Liam Burke, seconded by Cllr Mayor Olly
Casey: That the council calls on the Government to consider the
purchase of the Kathleen & May as a replacement sail-training
vessel’ (for the Asgard)
Cllr Burke said there is a serious question as to whether the
Asgard, which sank last year in the Bay of Biscay, will ever be salvaged. Instead, he believed, the wooden, three-masted schooner
the Kathleen & May would prove a worthy and suitable replacement. The historic ship is currently for sale and in danger of being
lost to this part of the world entirely. He noted the asking price is
£3m, while the Asgard was insured for 3.8m and the current sterling rate made its purchase attractive. The motion was passed.
The Town Clerk said a previous request to the government to buy
the ship, prior to the Asgard sinking, had not elicited a formal
reply. He doubted there is any government money available for
such a venture and warned against any local authority involvement in a would-be purchase due to the "gigantic" short and
longterm costs. Similar ventures in Tralee and Enniscorthy almost
bankrupted their councils, he said. However he would forward the
proposal to the appropriate government department.

POWERBOAT PROSPECTS
HOLED BUT NOT SUNK
By Christy Parker
Youghal’s hopes of hosting the P1 World Powerboat
Championships are not going to be realised this year but the aspiration is not a dead duck in the water for future years, according to
events organiser Aidan Foley. The Ardmore-based businessman is
part of the Medaza consortium that holds the northern European
rights to the race series from 2009-13. "The P1 management say
they are disappointed we could not hold a race this year but have
reassured us that the door remains open for the future," he says.
There will be no northern European leg of the series in 2009,
which is modelled on the Formula 1 Grand Prix world circuit and
runs form March to September. Ireland would have accommodated northern Europe’s first foray onto the series and had been provisionally pencilled in for the penultimate leg in the last weekend
in August. "It’s a shame because our proposal exceeded every
requirement," says a disappointed Mr. Foley. "If it had been even
a year earlier I’m certain we’d have succeeded."
The bid was sunk by the sudden nosedive in the global economy.
Failte Ireland cannot afford the 35% of funding it was expected to
provide, despite the original 3m total capital cost having been
significantly reduced. The remaining 65% money was to have
been largely realised by the corporate sector, which in itself would
probably struggle to meet provide now. (Interestingly, Sweden will
host an inaugural event this summer however).
Just six months ago Youghal was anticipating near certain participation. The projected statistics foresaw over 150,000 visitors daily
to the region, plus global media coverage, with estimated financial
benefits of 260m over five years. Much hope had been raised that
the P1 event would also establish Youghal and east Cork as a
major centre for water activities, with the ripple effect creating
thousands of jobs in the process.
Council accepting
January’s Town Council meeting accepted the news philosophically. Cllr Barbara Murray commented that the required funding was
categorised as a sports tourism grant and as she understood it, the
application had been submitted too late for 2009 anyway. She
hoped the company would re-apply for 2010 and in good time.
"Alternatively they could bankroll it themselves and invoice for it
afterwards," she added. Mr. Foley says the funding application
was not an issue and that Failte Ireland employ flexible procedures
for large-scale enterprises.
Alternatives
Town Clerk Liam Ryan tod the meeting that Mr Foley is committed to promoting Youghal as a premiere location for international
water sports and is currently exploring alternative attractions for
2009.
Cllr Mary Linehan Foley asked if the lesser rated, yet spectacular
Thundercat racing, which spawned a highly entertaining weekend
festival last June, would return. The Town Clerk said "a lot of discussion" is ongoing with regard to water events for next summer,
including the European Thundercats series. "I hope the council
and business community give every support, to whatever
emerges," said the councillor.
While a Youghal festival seems likely to materialise this year, the
mega-rich, future-fashioning spectacular that would be P1 remains
anchored to austerity. Youghal’s dream awaits calmer economic
waters before it can be re-launched.

Under 16 League - Youghal 10 - Cork Con 0
Our under 16s travelled to play city side Cork Constitution in the
league at Templehill recently. The city side had the better of the
early exchanges and were unlucky not to score on a few occasions.
However, good defence from Andrew Curtin and Dylan Power
kept them at bay.
In the second half Youghal gradually got into the game and took
the lead with a well struck penalty kick from Danny O’Brien. With
10 minutes remaining the seasiders wrapped up the points when
flanker Cillian Daly got over for a well deserved try. Best for
Youghal were Danny O’Brien, Dean Murray and Brendan Finn.
Youghal 8 - Fermoy 5
Our under 16s took on table toppers Fermoy at Frogmore recently
for vital league points. Fermoy played with the wind in the first
half and were well on top for the first 20 minutes. The visitors had
a very good try when some slick handling from their back line enabled their winger to squeeze in at the corner flag.
In the second half Youghal with the wind at their backs dominated possession and were unlucky not to score on a few occasions.
Youghal did manage to tie the scores when out half Paul Quill
chipped over the visitors defensive line to enable Dylan Power to
gather the bouncing ball to score a fabulous try. With time running
out Dylan Power wrapped up the win for Youghal with a well
struck penalty to give the seasiders a narrow but deserved win
over a very good Fermoy outfit. Best for Youghal were Danny
O’Brien, Paul Quill, Andrew Curtin, Dylan Power & Dean Murray.
Under 14 League - Youghal 55 - Cobh 0
Our under 14s continued their good run in the league with a big
win over Cobh at Frogmore recently. Conditions were very poor
for this league encounter but the Youghal lads always tried to play
attacking rugby. The scores came at regular intervals with the
seasiders pack paving the way for a speedy backline. Killian
Ansbro was Yiughal’s chief scorer with 4 tries while flanker Elton
Ruxton crossed for 2. Dean Malone, Tomas O’Neill and James
Glennon weighed in with 1 try a piece while Lee McCarthy had
his kicking boots on for 4 conversions. Special mention must go
to Ciaran O’Brien who kicked a conversion from the sideline.

An essential fatty acid (EFA) nutrient, in
scientific terms, is a nutrient required for
health that the cells of the body cannot
produce or make; it is a nutrient that must
be derived from our diet. Without these
essential nutrients proper health is impossible.
There are two main classifications of
essential fatty acids, omega 3 fatty acids
and omega 6 fatty acids. It is useful to
think of omega 6 fatty acids coming from
corn, soy, safflower, and sunflower sources. Think of omega 3
fatty acids as coming from flax (LNA) or from fish or wild game
meat (EPA/DHA). The ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids in
both your diet and your body should be 1:1. Too much omega 6
or too little omega 3 leads to improper cell function which causes
excessive inflammation, decreased immune function and
increased susceptibility to virtually every chronic illness including
heart disease, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, depression, Alzheimer’s,
osteoporosis, allergies etc.
It is a scientific fact that due to our dietary and food processing
habits virtually every person in Industrial or Western nations is
both toxic with omega 6 EFAs and deficient in omega 3 EFAs. In
fact research indicates that the ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty
acids in the average diet is now up to 20:1 in favor of omega 6!!
This is because farmed meat and virtually every packaged or fast
food is loaded with corn, soy, safflower, or sunflower derivatives.
Omega 3 essential fatty acids (EFAs) are some of the most crucial
essential nutrients for human and other animal health ever identified. Over 2000 scientific studies provide evidence of the importance of EPA and DHA essential fatty acids for the maintenance
and restoration of health and the prevention of disease. EPA and
DHA omega 3 EFAs are part of every cell membrane and are
required to maintain the proper shape, flexibility or fluidity, and
"slipperiness" of cell membranes. The flexibility and "slipperiness" of cell membranes is important for the flow of blood through
blood vessels and decreasing the risk of high blood pressure,
stroke and heart attack.
In addition, EFAs are required for proper nerve signal transmission
(memory, concentration, cognitive ability, muscle coordination
and strength) and immune function including defense against cancer. EPA and DHA omega 3 EFAs also play a major role in regulating inflammation via substances called prostaglandins. EPA
and DHA Omega 3 fatty acids produce anti-inflammatory
prostaglandins while Omega 6 fatty acids produce pro-inflammatory prostaglandins.
A consultation with your Doctor of
Chiropractic not only can help your body’s natural healing ability
by removing interferences to your nervous system, but also
improve your overall health naturally, without drugs or medication.

THE THIRD EMER CASEY
MEMORIAL 10K.
The trustees of the Emer Casey foundation are delighted to
announce that, with the help of all its supporters, it has raised
260,000 to date. 160k of this money has already been officially
handed over to the DISCOVARY research consortium. The
remainder of the money will be handed over in due course.
The DISCOVARY research group is composed of researchers
from several Irish institutions whose aim is to develop a test for
the early detection of ovarian and uterine cancer. The team is
broad-based and is composed of gynaecologists, oncologists,
pathologists, molecular biologists and pharmacologists. The consortium has also established substantial research links with worldleading researchers in the USA.
The Emer Casey Foundation has agreed to fully fund two postgraduate researchers, who are part of the DISCOVARY team, on a
full-time basis for three years. These two research posts were
advertised last summer and in excess of 120 applications were
received. Interviews took place in St. James’ hospital, Dublin on
October 3rd and two successful candidates were appointed and
have commenced their research into ovarian cancer. These
researchers will focus their research on two specific areas of ovarian cancer, number (1): Protein signatures in early and recurrent
ovarian cancer and number (2): Developing novel therapeutic
approaches in cisplatin- resistant ovarian cancer patients. The
160,000 already handed over will cover all research expenses for
the first year.
The Emer Casey Foundation would like to thank very sincerely
the community of Youghal and surrounding areas for their extreme
generosity, kindness and goodwill without which this good work
would not be possible. We would also like to assure all donars and
fund-raisers that ALL money raised goes directly to the DISCOVARY research consortium.
Moves are currently afoot to organise Emer Casey 10k events in
both New York and London following the very successful running
events in Melbourne and New York last year. Anybody interested
in these overseas ventures are advised to email the website with
any enquiries. Back home, the third Emer Casey memorial 10k in
conjunction with Matheson, Ormsby, Prentice solicitors and The
Youghal Athletic Club will be held in Youghal on Sunday May
24th 2009. Entry forms for this very successful annual event will
be available for download in early February at www.emercaseyfoundation.com. The event is open to all runners and walkers and
we look forward to welcoming you there.

Winter Racquetball League
The Winter League is well under way with all players getting
through the matches as planned. Section A of the league has
Andrew Gallogley, Dwaine O Shea and Taras Kennedy leading
the table undefeated to date. Close on their tails are Liam Joyce
and Michael Pearce. In section B we have Wayne Fitzgerald leading the table as the only undefeated player. However, close on his
tail, are Olan McCarthy, Jody Cooper, Brendan Mackey and Bill
Morris. The next couple of weeks we have some important games
that will prove very interesting to watch. It is especially encouraging to see new players like Dwaine O Shea, Jody Cooper and
Liam Joyce putting in some good performances and giving some
of the more seasoned players a game that they were not quite
expecting!! A couple of frights but no big upset yet! We will keep
our eyes peeled as the players are benefiting from some tougher
games and this in turn brings on their own games.
On Friday 6th February, Wayne Fitzgerald and Olan McCarthy,
will compete in the Semi-Final of the Munster Junior Doubles
Championship. The match will be played in Fermoy at 7pm and
Open Letter to Sponsors
and Volunteers of European
Beach Challenge
re:P1 Powerboating 2009
The organising committee of the European Beach Challenge
regrets to inform its sponsors and volunteers that it has received
confirmation from ’Medaza’ - the Event Delivery Company, that
unfortunately Youghal will not be one of the locations on the P1
Powerboating circuit for 2009.
’Medaza’ had proposed Youghal as the preferred location in Ireland
to the Governing body of P1 to host the event - following the success of the European Beach Challenge. Youghal in fact had been
provisionally included in the calendar for 2009, but only on the
basis that funding would be forthcoming from Failte Ireland. The
application for funding was made by ’Medaza’ for this event.
Therefore, the entire event hinged on Failte Ireland support, as
their contribution would make up 35% of funding. The majority
of the balance was to come from commercial interests, which were
all fully lined up.
’Medaza’ were informed on 9th January 2009 that ’P1 in Youghal’
ticked all the boxes when evaluated and in fact exceeded benchmark requirements. However, the current economic climate
meant that the budget for Sports Tourism Funding was drastically
reduced and therefore Failte Ireland would be unable to commit to
any funding of the event.
Despite this disappointing set-back, Youghal is still in a position
to promote itself as a premier location of for Watersports internationally.
At a ceremony recently held at the Earls Court Boatshow, the 2008
Thundercat European Beach Challenge was awarded the ’Best
Race’ award. This prestigious title was awarded by the ’UIM
European & RYA National Championship Awards’. It was given
in recognition of both the on-water organisation and the supporting shore-side festival. This is the first time this award has been
given to an Irish venue and testifies to the location of Youghal as
an excellent environment for water-based events, and the ability of
the local organisers to run an international event of this calibre.
Once again the organising committee wishes to thank all its sponsors and volunteers for their support of the European Beach
Challenge Event. Undoubtedly this event in itself will go towards
positioning Youghal as a key location on the south coast for waterbased activities and future events.

DEVALERA STREET
RESIDENTS MAKE
PARKING PROPOSALS
By Christy Parker
DeValera Street residents availed of the opportunity to air their
views on the streets permit parking dilemma (see Town Council
report in this issue) when they met with Town Clerk Liam Ryan at
the council’s offices last Thursday. About a dozen residents attended the meeting, which was organised by Cllr Mary Linehan Foley.
Cllr Liam Burke also attended, though Mayor Olly Casey was
absent. Cllrs Burke and Casey have argued vehemently for 17 designated spaces (out of 37) to be allocated to the residents when the
new car park eventually opens, in lieu of their vehicles being
removed from the street. The initiative was passed by the council
but later deemed impractical and possibly illegal by legal opinion.
The meeting resulted in the residents proposing a compromise
whereby they would forego designated spaces in return for permits that would allow them to avail of the car park indefinitely,
spaces permitting, as well as retain their current option of parking
on the laneway. The lane would become one-way (upwards) with,
by consequence, traffic accessing the main street being routed
down Church Lane.
Before being sanctioned, the proposals will need to meet the
acceptance of the street’s other residents, the emergency services
and, possibly, residents in Church Lane. The latter consideration
may -or may not- provoke debate, given the street’s narrow dimensions and the resultant increase in traffic on the main access route
to the heritage hum that is the College Gardens and St. Mary’s
Church. "The DeValera Street residents are to return to the Town
Clerk within a fortnight," says Cllr Linehan Foley.

KEEP FIT ENTHUSIASTS
RESPOND TO AURA YOUGHAL’S
’PAY AS YOU GO’ PRICE FREEZE
Keep fit enthusiasts used to tightening their belts no longer have to
worry about the cost of exercising following a decision by Aura
Youghal Leisure Centre to freeze its ’Pay As You Go’ prices for 2009.
Aura Youghal’s ’Pay as You Go’ option allows people to have fun, to
get fit and to improve their health without committing to long-term
membership.
"People are naturally more price conscious during a recession and
we are committed to ensuring that anyone who wants to exercise can
continue do so at a price they can afford," said Tracy Kenneally,
Operations Manager at Aura Youghal Leisure Centre.
"Our ’Pay as You Go’ option is unique and we have noticed that it has
become more popular than ever in recent months. Visitor numbers
have increased simply because the option exists and we took the
decision not to increase our ’Pay as You Go’ prices for 2009 with that
in mind," Tracy explained.
The ’Pay as You Go’ prices apply to swim and gym session and cater
for adults, children, OAPs and families. Swimming costs 7 for
adults, 4.20 for children or OAPs and 21 for families. Gym sessions cost 8.50 for adults during peak periods, 7.50 during offpeak periods, 4.20 for OAPs and 5.50 for teens.
Fitness classes cost 8.80 during peak periods and 7.80 during offpeak periods. Aura Youghal’s combined gym and swim ’Pay as You
Go’ options costs 9.50 during peak periods and 8.50 during offpeak periods. Those looking for a new and fun way to keep fit will
be interested to hear about Aura Youghal’s new Boxercise class,
which is commencing in February.
"Boxercise is one of the most effective forms of cross-training available today and involves some of the exercises that boxers use to keep
fit. The course is six weeks long and participants will really notice
the results at the finish," said Tracy.
For further information on any of the courses, classes or membership
options, contact Aura Youghal reception on 024-91614.

HOTEL AND MARINA
FOR YOUGHAL
Cllr Barbara Murray recently welcomed Cork County Councils
decision to proceed with advertising for submissions for the provision of a 150/200 bed hotel and marina, to be located at the sloblands Youghal. The Advertising for submissions was posted in the
Irish Examiner on Friday December 12th with a closing date of
February 20th 2009.
The delay in bringing the project to this point, was due to the provision of access for the proposed treatment plant being secured.
This process is now complete. Although current economic conditions are not favourable towards investment in hotels in particular,
there is considerable interest from both local and regional developers in undertaking this project.
The evaluations will be conducted over a six week period after
February 20th. At this point Cllr Barbara Murray would be hopeful that a suitable developer will have met all the relevant criteria
set out in the original submission. This will conclude a process
that has been consistently pursued by Cllr Murray over the last two
years and will hopefully result in the long awaited Marina and
Hotel for Youghal. There is no doubt, but that the people of
Youghal will be watching the progress of this project very carefully!!!

Guys and Dolls
Based here in Youghal ’Harmony’ is now recruiting for it’s next
show, ’Guys and Dolls’. One of Broadway’s most hilarious shows,
’Guys and Dolls’ has been described as
’The perfect musical comedy’. It is based on a Damon Runyon short
story, which describes the unlikely romance between a pure-at-heart
member of the Salvation Army and a slick Broadway gambler. The
show’s second romantic storyline involves Nathan Detroit and Miss
Adelaide, who have been engaged for fourteen years! Nathan organises the ’oldest established permanent floating crap game in New
York’ and Adelaide is the main attraction at the Hot-Box nightclub.
’Guys and Dolls’ is chock-full of great characters - tough, lovable
and very, very funny. If you would like to audition for ’Guys and
Dolls’, contact Mary at 024 92388. [Auditions are open to everyone
not just people from town]

YOUGHAL UNITED
SOCCER CLUB
Juniors! January 11th, 2009 Report: Anthony Horgan.
It is with regret to announce that the Youghal United Junior team
is to be withdrawn from the league with immediate effect. The
squad has been going through some rough times recently in trying
to fill a team at weekends especially on Sunday mornings. A good
management team was in place in Pat McCarthy, John Heaphy and
Ray Fraser and the committee are at a loss as to why the players
didn’t give them commitment at the weekends. Also, I would like
to add that at the beginning of the season a delegate team from the
club went to meet with the Munster Senior League board to put a
case forward and convince them that the Juniors would see out the
season if they allowed us entry into the league as this is not the
first time this has happened. Now the club is left with egg on it’s
face again and in the foreseeable future will find it impossible to
enter a junior team. It has cost the club in fine’s for not fulfilling
fixtures and also lost a bond that was put up at the start of the season. In conclusion everyone is disappointed with the players
involved and finally I would like to thank Pat McCarthy, John
Heaphy and Ray Fraser for their time and effort.
Seniors. January 11th, 2009 Youghal United 0 - 1 Fermoy.
The lads missed a chance to close the gab on league leaders
Fermoy recently with a one nil defeat at home. Youghal will be
frustrated with this result as they had enough chances to get a
result from the game. This weekend’s fixture fell foul to the weather conditions but all eyes will be on next weeks fixture away to fellow promotion rivals Ballinhassig. Youghal will be looking to get
something from this fixture so they can keep them at bay.

This was an excellent win for the lads at home to Douglas Hall.
Under 13 Boys Result
January 11th, 2009 Report: Anthony Horgan.
Youghal United 1 - 0 Nufarm Athletic
The boys needed to be on top form here for the duration of the
game as Nufarm are excellent opposition. Youghal started well
and were on top for most of the game only to be caught offside on
a number of occasions as Nufarm were a well organised outfit at
the back. On the other hand Youghal were unlucky not to take the
lead on a number of occasions when Danny Walsh hit the upright
and Ronan O’ Sullivan had a good effort tipped onto the crossbar.
Ronan however did pop up to decide this match with a great strike.
Overall this was a good performance by the whole team and a special mention to Connor Finn who stepped in to replace our regular
keeper.
Gortroe Card Results
Wednesday January 14th
Winning on 9 games and adding glamour to the occasion were
Crissie and Mairead. Second and third prizes were shared three

Local Singer Songwriter Shane
Supple has released his long
awaited new 16 track Album
Country Style Blues.
The CD was recorded in three different studios with most of the
work carried out in Claycastle Studio Youghal with Warren Tivy
and John Burke who also mastered the finished CD. With the help
of the following Musicians who worked on this project. Tony
Kirby (steel guitar), Oliver Keane (guitar, piano) Kieran McCarthy
(drums, percussion) Warren Tivy (strings, keyboards), Paul Roche
(mandoline, fiddle, guitars), Darleen & Sofia (backing vocals)
Padraig Parker (guitar), Kingsley Johnson, Lena Caples and Art
Supple (brass), this album could not be finished.
At 16, Shane Supple from Youghal, started touring with his father
Art Supple, the well known singer and entertainer. Shane then
spent the following years touring Ireland, the UK, and some
European countries as a working musician learning his trade and at
this time wrote his first song Someday I Will Be A Star.
In 1992 Shane recorded his first EP Eyes of Blue. Shane toured
with his father Art Supple up until 93 when he joined Irish Star
Brendan Shine for a short spell doing concert tours of Ireland & the
UK, during this time Shane wrote the song Youghal By The Sea
which proved to be very popular. In 1999 Shane signed up as a
keyboard player with Waterford country singer Paddy O Brien.
While working with Paddy O Brien in 2001 Shane wrote Lifetime
Guarantee which he sent to Paschal Mooney of Green Grass Music
and a publishing contract was signed. Shortly after that another
song Here I Am - Where Are You was recorded and released on the
album Cottage By The Sea by Kevin Prendergast. His father Art.
Supple also recorded another of Shane s songs Dance The Last
Dance.
By 2004 popular country singer Mick Flavin recorded Lifetime
Guarantee on his album Try It You’ll Like It. In 2005 Shane got
word that another of his song s The Highway Song was receiving
airplay as far away as Taiwan & Asia. During the summer of 2006
much to Shane s delight and surprise, he got word that his song
Your So Special was playlisted in New Zealand & Australia.
2009 see s the release of the new 16 track album Country Style
Blues, Shane has been performing these songs onstage over the last
number of years and was asked to record these songs by many people who heard him singing. The finished result is a fine collection
of songs including his best known song Lifetime Guarantee (track
1 on the album), as well as The Highway Song (track 15 on the
album).
CD is available on the internet www.shanesupple.com and at The
Cyber-room Internet CafØ, Main Street, Youghal.

Cois Bhride Juvenile
G.A.A. Notes.
Annual General Meeting.
Cois Bhride C.L.G. is holding it’s A.G.M. in the Shamrock Inn,
Knockanore, next Friday 23rd January commencing at 8.30 sharp.
All aspects of the activities of Cois Bhride in 2008 will be discussed and all are welcome. For anyone who wishes to raise any
issues with the club over it’s activities on and off the field in the
past year, this is the place to do it, and all new members and indeed
anyone who might wish to comtribute to the running of the club
are more than welcome. Remember, this Friday, 23rd January,
8.30 sharp in Knockanore.
2008, how was it for you?
It was the year Waterford finally made it to an All-Ireland final
after 45 years, the game started at 3.30, and finished at 3.30.... De
La Salle won their first County hurling title, then followed that up
by winning Munster. Tallow reached their first senior semi-final in
quite a while, but lost out to De La Salle. On the club front, Cois
Bhride U-8’s to 12’s performed very well with our U-11 hurlers
winning a Western ground hurling title (div.1), but losing in the
Co. final to Ballygunner by a single point. They also did well in
the football league, reaching the knockout stages. Our U-12
hurlers also did well, beating Lismore to qualify for a Western
Final against Dungarvan, which they unfortunately lost after a
good effort. Our U-14 hurlers also reached a Western final, but
they were to taste defeat also in this. In the county they won their
first four matches, but were knocked out in the semi-final.
Unfortunately our U-16’s and minor teams didn’t fare too well last
year, we seem to have a difficulty in fielding teams at these age
levels owing to small sized panels. However our U-21 hurlers put
a bit of icing on the cake when they succeeded in winning a county title late in the year, so our congratulations to them. Overall, a
mixed bag, some good, some not, but plenty to be optimistic about
for the coming year. The Celtic Tiger may be well and truly
extinct, but Cois Bhride is alive and kicking!
Equipment officer.
John Hennessy, our excellent equipment officer, would dearly like
to have all outstanding bottles, first aid or other gear returned to
him before Friday night if possible. So a message to all our selectors, please check your car boots and garages etc. and give back all
stray gear please?
Sean Leahy R.I.P.
Cois Bhride C.L.G would like to sympathise with the family and
friends of Sean Leahy, Glendine, who passed away recently.
Sean’s grandson Colin donned the Cois Bhride colours just a few
years ago. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.

Munster Junior & Senior Indoor Track and Field Championships
Nenagh 04/01/09
The Munster Junior and Senior Indoor Championships kicked off
the New Track and Field season in Nenagh on Sunday the 4th
January.
Youghal were represented by Nikita Savage in the Junior Pole
Vault and Sarah Ryan in the Senior Pole Vault.
In the Junior Competition Nikita Savage put in a wonderful performance continuing in the rich vein of form which she finished
last season in, Nikita open the competition with a first time clearance at 2.40 and also cleared 2.60 and
2.80 with her first attempt at each. The
clearance at 2.80 gave Nikita the Munster
Junior Indoor Record which had stood
since 2002, Nikita was not finished yet as
she cleared 3.00 metre mark on her second attempt to set the record even higher,
she was so unlucky when clear at 3.20
mark she caught it on the way down with
her hand. Nikita Junior record of 3.00
metres puts her among the top 5 or 6 Irish Nikita Savage
women vaulter to ever clear the 3.00
meter mark. Nikita now’s holds the indoor record as well as the
Munster Junior Outdoor Record with Sarah Ryan.
In the Senior Competition Sarah Ryan
took the title with a championship best
performance of 2.60. Sarah has been out
of competitive pole Vault action with over
twelve months and returned with a wonderful performance of jumping. Sarah
using a short run up of eight strides
opened the competition at 2.00 metres
and cleared it first time. Sarah cleared
2.20 and 2.40 first time and 2.60 in her
3rd attempt. Sarah like Nikita was most
unfortunate at 2.80 when clear of the bar
caught it on the way down. This was a
Sarah Ryan
very solid performance in her first competition back and she can look forward to a season ahead with confidence of many more top class performances ahead.
Both Girls compete in All Ireland Juniors in 2 Weeks time before
travelling to the Belfast Odyssey Arena the first weekend in
February for the Senior Indoor Championships and compete in the
same arena as many of Irelands top athletes such as Derval
O’Rourke, Paul Hession, Robert Heffernan just to name a few.

John Fitzgerald and Michael Shiels with 15 points. 2nd ; Noreen
Hennessy, Alex Brophy, Chris McHugh and John Goodwin with
14 points 3rd ; Rita Ryall, Frances Forrest, Lily Bulman and Bridie

The 2nd club annual dinner was held in the Walter Raleigh hotel
on Friday 19th December and was a very successful and enjoyable
event. We wish to thank the staff of the hotel and our very able
committee member, Joy Bryan, who organised the event. The
members were afterwards entertained in the bar by that well
known singer, musician and all round entertainer, Batty

JOHN S SHIP COMES IN
Christy Parker talks to a Youghal writer whose debut novel is set
to rules the waves.
The writing talents of Youghal man John Stack are
poised for global recognition as his debut novel hits
the shelves this month. Top publishers Harper
Collins won the rights to his book, Ship of Rome,
and have commissioned a further two novels to form
a trilogy called Masters of the Sea. The series, "a
historical fiction" is set in the Punic wars waged
between the emerging Roman navy and the Carthaginian Empire
from 264-201 BC.
John, 36, is the son of Gerry and Kitty Stack, Kilcoran Park and
lives near Rochestown with wife Adrienne, daughter Zoe, seven
and two year-old twins Amy and Andrew. His commission carries
a six-figure sum over four years.
It would be entirely apt if John’s books proved ’moving’ -as he
writes from the passenger seat of his green Opel Zafira! He struggled with domestic distraction when embarking on Ship of Rome
in March 2007 and achieved a semblance of a solution by using a
friend’s house. One day, on forgetting his key, he drove to a nearby car-park overlooking Cork harbour and started up his laptop.
There, doors locked, he found "perfect privacy." Furthermore, he
had "the option of a different vista every day!", he recalls.
John’s interest in military history was sparked in teenage years by
his father’s reading recommendations. The attraction proved lasting, through adult years acquiring a BA and MBA in Business
Administration. At some stage he encountered the Punic wars
which, come March 2007, inspired the man who had never before
written anything "other than essays," to start a novel.
He would write betwixt his ’day job’ as a business manager with
Wright Line, an American, Cork-based office furniture manufacturer. From early 2007 he knew the firm was pondering closure in
Cork and his work uncertainty accentuated his writing, about
which he confided only in his wife. This proved convenient when
three literary agents rejected his manuscript. He undertook a rewrite, researched advice on publishing for first time authors and
in August 2007 sent the book to a London agency with established
connections in historic fiction.
September 2007 brought two contrasting and life-changing
announcements: the agency would marketing his book to publishers from January 2008 and his ten years with Wright Line would
end come November when the company decamped to India.
He reflects on redundancy: "My greatest fear stemmed from the
uncertainty about my future following ten years in which the paycheques had unfailingly arrived. But at least I had seen it coming
and saw the chance to do something I had always wanted to do. If
I’d been caught unawares I’m not sure if Ship of Rome would have
been written. Uncertainty breeds an overwhelming need for security and for most of us that means a new job, maybe better, maybe
worse, maybe the same. For others it drives them towards a new
career and a complete change in their lives. "
"I now feel that perhaps redundancy brings opportunity, great and
small -sometimes glaring, sometimes hidden; opportunities to
travel, to begin a new career, to immigrate, to follow some wish
that has lain dormant in the routine of working-life. Just perhaps,
redundancy can be a chance to discover another road that you
never knew existed."
As he searched for another job, the book sat waiting for January
on his agent’s desk, cradling between its covers the possibility, if
not the promise, of a new future for its author. In January’s dying
days came news that both Penguin and Harper Collins wanted the
rights. "I felt numb, totally unable to absorb the news," he recalls
with delight. Harper Collins triumphed.
He describes Ship of Rome as "about the early Roman navy and
how, from a relatively small domain in the southern half of Italy,
it defeated the mighty Carthaginian Empire that ruled the
Mediterranean. It doesn’t read like a history novel," he proceeds
"but has wider appeal, with interwoven plots. There are two
-Atticus, a Greek naval captain -of a conquered race and unloved
but respected by the Romans- and Septimus, a centurion on board
his ship."
The story also focuses on "the view of ordinary men caught up in
history," Through this prism, he captures the crucial role of a new
device called the corvus. "It was a spiked boarding ramp that
allowed the Romans fast and lethal access to the enemy’s ships. It
probably won them their victory, yet nobody is credited with
inventing or designing it," says John. "In a wider context, Rome’s
victory led to the subsequent formation of its empire and the eventual evolvement of modern Europe. The Carthaginians were of
North African extract and we can assume Europe today would be
fundamentally different if they had persevered."
John has seldom ventured forth in a boat himself but does credit
Youghal with influence on his success. "Influences persist. If you
grow up by the sea, it stays with you forever. Its entirely possible
if I had not been reared in Youghal, I might not have been inclined
to write that kind of book," he concludes. Then again, maybe it
was the car parks that inspired him.

Garryvoe Toastmasters The Garryvoe Toastmasters, better known as
the Talking Heads Club, has been 19 years a growing and has helped
many, many members to become more confident in front of an audience. Confidence is a key ingredient to becoming the speaker and
leader you want to be. Good leaders are good communicators and
leadership is the art of persuading others to do what you wish to be
done. To do so, you need to communicate and you need to work as a
team. In a Toastmaster club, you’ll do both; and you’ll find out how to
vary your approach to suit the needs of different people, be they the
audience for a speech or the committee for a fundraiser. Best of all,
you’ll practice in a friendly, supportive environment with people who
are there for the same reasons you are. Garryvoe Toastmasters meet in
the comfortable surrounds of the Garryvoe Hotel on alternate Tuesday
nights at 8.00 pm sharp and meetings are of two hours duration.
Guests are always welcome to come and visit us, observe what we are
about. Our next meeting is on January 27th. If you would like further

Anyone Could Rob a Bank
Inch Community Centre
Thurs. 29th Jan. - Sun. 1st Feb.
Curtain 8.15pm sharp
It is time for some laughter and fun in Inch Community Centre
again, and Inch Drama Group s Anyone Could Rob a Bank a
farce, by Tom Coffey is just what the doctor ordered.
The play is set in the kitchen of Badger Grey s house. Badger is
played by Anthony Flavin and his hair-brained wife Sarah played
by Mary Colbert, their pretty and flirtatious daughter played by
Teresa Riordan who has a crush on the local Sergeant played by
Pakie O Mahony, but she is also attracted to Tony, a business man,
played by John Hurley who is in town for a few days. Then there
is Jerreen, Badger s brother played by Michael Riordan Jnr. (the
local coffin maker) and Mickey, their nephew, played by Padraig
Walsh a wanna-be boxer who is an apprentice toJerreen, and to
complete the crew there is Windy, Badger s next door neighbour
and local butcher played by Brendan Walsh.
We welcome Brendan and Padraig Walsh - father and son - to our
cast for the first time - though this is not their first time on stage,
Brendan has an acting past with Killeagh macra and Padraig is a
rising star on the stage.
So what is the play about? Having read of an unsuccessful bank
robbery in Blarney, Badger, egged on by Jerreen and Windy, plots
out a robbery of his own, just to show how it could be done properly. You won t believe the mayhem, accusations, confusion and
shenanigans that follow - it is laughter all the way.
They say that laughter is the shock absorber that eases the blows
of life , in the times we live in this is what we all need - a good
laugh.
This performance is not to be missed and with laughter and enjoyment assured an with all the comforts available at Inch
Community Centre, it is a great night out for all concerned.
Booking in advance of these shows to secure your seat can be
made by telephoning (024) 95252 between the hours of 5pm and
9.30pm - curtain 8.15pm sharp.

YOUGHAL GAA CLUB NEWS
CLUB A.G.M.
The Senior Club held their A.G.M. on Thursday night the 9th of
December in Club Aras. In front of a sizeable attendance the very
reverend Fr. Bernard Cotter was elected as President. In his
address to the meeting he expressed what an honour it was to be
selected to the role and how it was a very special honour to be following on from the late Liam Moynihan. Many tributes were
heard throughout proceedings to Liam who was a hugely popular
member of the Club and society in general. Fr. Cotter played his
first game for the Club in a schools tournament in Midleton in
1948 and has been a member of the Club ever since. Although
retired now and living in Cork he is an everpresent at Club functions and will be a popular choice as president. There was a decision made at the meeting that the president be changed every 3
years as there is a long list of very destinguished vice presidents
who may never get the chance to become president. The executive
was returned as it was last year with the exception of Alan
Hennessy who is stepping down as Fixtures secretary. Alan has
served the Club as PRO and Fixtures Secretary over the last 13
Years and Chairman Sean Ring paid tribute to Alan for all he has
done in that time. The biggest topic of discussion on the night was
that of the Schools being unable to play in any competitions from
January 1st as the funding for substitute teachers will not allow for
teachers to have time to go to these games. Little has been made
of this in the media and most people are unaware of this being the
case. This could potentially have a huge bearing on young people
not playing sports and their is concern that their will be a fall off
in the numbers playing Gaelic games aswell as the huge emphasis
that has been put on physical education in schools because of obesity levels rising in Ireland being eroded somewhat. The Club will
be in contact with all the relevent parties about this situation to
express it’s concerns over the next few weeks.
Club Officials for the coming Year are Sean Ring as Chairman,
Ken Bulman as Vice Chairman, Assumpta Parker as Secretary,
Ned O’Connell as Treasurer and David Kilgannon as P.R.O. The
role of Fixtures Secretary will be announced after the first Club
meeting in the New Year.
On the playing front it was decided to have just one league team
next year as it is proving difficult to field two teams for a full
league campaign in Football. There will however be two teams for
Championship, one Intermediate and one Junior. Mick Sheehan
has the task of getting football back on track in the Club flanked
by Philip Monaghan and Eoin O Suchru. Mick is finalising his
back room team at the moment and their is a buzz about football
in the club that has not been seen for a few years with many players already committing to giving their best efforts for the cause.
U21 Football will be looked after by Maurice O’Mahony, Maurice
Cronin and David Kilgannon. This has been a very successful
combination over the last few years at underage level and are stepping up to the adult club for the first time. Pat Mackey is again
looking after the Minors and with a Team that did the double at
u16 this could be a very exciting year for football fans.
No Hurling Management team is in place at the moment but discussions are ongoing and the Club are optemistic they will get
their Man. Sean Ring and John Parker will again be looking after
the Juniors and if the Senior Manager approached takes the position I can see a great year ahead for hurling also. The enigmatic
Ken Bulman is taking the u21 hurlers, lets hope he didn’t pick up
too many bad habits accross the bridge last year or get a feel for
losing. Con Spillane will look after the Minors which will be a
dificult job with limited resources but his experience will counteract this.
We have underachieved in both codes over the last few years but
their is an air of excitement and optimism building about next
years prospects that I have not witnessed before in my 5 Years
with the Club and hopefully some of this will lead to long summer
evenings challenging for honours on all fronts.
ST.STEPHENS DAY GET TOGETHER IN MEMORY OF
DAN COLEMAN
A large crowd gathered at Club Aras on St Stephens morning for a
Hurling and Football tournament organised by the Coleman
Family to mark the upcoming tenth anniversary of the passing of
Dan. It was great to see such a large gathering for what was also
billed as a celebration of it being 10 Years this Year since the footballers won the Junior Championship. The Hurlers and Footballers
of 99 took on their present Day counterparts in two very competitive matches with plenty of good talent both past and
present on show. The 99 hurlers lost out by a couple of points but
the footballers gained revenge for this in the second game. Patrons
were treated to a hot toddy during the games to help offset the cold
weather and possibly the onset of the Christmas hangover. Their
was a great atmosphere in the Club Bar after where Brendan
Coleman presented trophies to the winning connections.
Hopefully this can become an anual event that helps former players and visitors to stay in touch with the Club, while also giving
people a chance to remember the highs and lows of days past.
CHAMPIONSHIP DRAWS FOR 2009
The Intermediate footballers will be in action against Canovee in
the first round of the Championship with the losers playing either
Eire Og or Delaneys. With a big emphasis being put on the
Football this Year under the guidance of Mick Sheehan lets hope
we will have a long Year chearing on the Youghal Boys. Training
is starting this Wednesday at 7:30 sharp with a full attendance
expected.
The hurlers will be up against Mallow in the first round with the
losers playing Douglas or Newcestown. Their was no more than a
puck of a ball between Youghal and Mallow last Year so no
chances will be taken in the build up to this one and having to possibly face their victors from last year Douglas should they lose
will be an added incentive to come out on top.
CRAFT FAIR
A craft fair was held in the hall on Sunday 14th December. The
event was organised and run by Sean and Noreen Oliphant and the
Club would like to thank both of them for their efforts. There were
25 stalls on the Day selling a vast array of items from Bread to old
coins, Candles to flowers and Dolls to baskets. Over 600 people
passed through the doors on the day with many leaving with that
one off gift or simply a loaf of bread or some farm house cheese.
The next event of it’s kind will be the return of the Car Boot Sale
on January 11th. The last one was a great success despite some
very stormy weather with over 30 stalls and it is hoped to increase
this even further over the next few months to establish Youghal as
one of the biggest markets in Munster.
On Friday night last 19th December the Club held a party for Club
Members and Lotto sellers. Their was a raffle on the night confined to lotto sellers only and the following names were drawn.
Turkey Vouchers: Alan Geary, Hair Design and Aoife Lawlor.
Bottle of Wine: Richard Byrne, Angeline Murphy, Carmel Forrest
and Brian Coleman.
Box of Biscuits: Mary Farrell, Cathy & Henry Collins, Tommy
Coleman Snr. and William Kennefick.
TEENAGE DISCO:
Club Aras again rocked to the beat of hip hop and r & b as
TeenXtreme brought their underage disco roadshow to Town.
Over 200 revellers danced the night away helped by two of
Irelands hottest rap artists. It was the only place in Ireland that saw
snow on the night as two snow machines pumped out the white
stuff to add that little extra bit of atmosphere to the occasion. The
next big night for the Teenagers will be over valentines weekend
where their are a few more surprises planned. Watch this space for
further details.
COUNTY BOARD DRAW
Congratulations to Fintan Crowley on winning a night at
Curraheen Park Stadium in the December Draw. Hope you have a
great night Fintan. Tickets are still available for the rest of the
Draws and we would encourage people to purchase these as up to
60% of the proceeds come directly back to the Club. Tickets can
be obtained from any Committee member.
CLUB LOTTO
Still no winner of the Jackpot that is well in excess of 10 grand.
The winner of the Holiday for December was Margaret Barry
from Knockaverry who bought the ticket from Angela Pomphrett.
Heres hopeing you enjoy the break.
JUVENILE TRAINING
With the New Year upon us the youngest members of our club will
be back in action on the second Saturday in January. The Club
wish to extend an invitation to all families in the parish of Youghal
to bring their kids along to have a go. The only rules are that the
children be aged 5 or attending main stream school. Coaching
starts at 10am each and every Saturday with under 8 and 7’s up
first and the younger members from 11 o’clock. This is great fun
for the kids and parents alike and we would encourage parents to
stay around for the hour and watch the laughter and sometimes
tears that inevitably ensue.
Opportunity to promote
Youghal’s ’hidden gems’ in
online promotional movies to
be screened across the world
Tourism Ireland has launched a nationwide search for a number of
individuals or couples to star in a series of short online movies to
help market the island of Ireland overseas and attract more visitors
in 2009 and beyond.
Tourism Ireland is looking to recruit people whose enthusiasm for
their favourite part of Ireland, whether iconic location or best kept
secret, can help promote the destination to potential visitors across
the world. This is a great opportunity to let Tourism Ireland (who
market Ireland overseas) and the outside world see just what ’hidden gems’ Youghal has to offer.
The movies will complement Tourism Ireland’s new three-year
global advertising campaign ’Go Where Ireland Takes You’. The
new campaign has been designed to capture the spontaneity and
fun of holidaying in Ireland.
The producers of the online movies, Keo Films, the makers of
Channel 4’s River Cottage series, will carry out the initial casting
stage over the next couple of weeks. Those interested in taking
part are invited to email: [email protected] or to call
Freefone 1800 932 916 (calls are free from landlines) and give
details of their favourite place and say why they should be selected to feature in one of the movies. A shortlist will then be compiled and short listed respondents will be invited to participate in
a series of auditions at a number of locations across the island.
The online movies will feature on Tourism Ireland’s international
suite of 41 websites www.discoverireland.com, which covers
every continent, and will be translated into five languages. Last
year the websites attracted a record 10.3 million unique visitors, a
massive +53% increase in visits over 2007, illustrating the powerful influence of the internet on consumer holiday planning.
Research carried out by Tourism Ireland has indicated that customers are not just searching for the lowest fare any more; they are
seeking information and recommendations on the perfect holiday
experience - where to go, what to see and do and where to eat.
This new online movie series is aimed at providing an added
dimension of information on the many attractions Ireland has to
offer in a novel and entertaining way. In addition to featuring on
Tourism Ireland’s global website, the movies will also feature on
online video channels and on social networking sites such as
Youtube, Facebook and WAYN.com.
Tourism Ireland is investing 47 million in its global promotion of
the island of Ireland in 2009.
If you are interested please make contact with Keo Films (as
detailed above) and then contact Youghal’s Tourism Development
Officer, Aileen Ahern by email: [email protected] or Tel: 02493905 to further promote your entry!
