YOUGHAL TOWN COUNCIL MARCH MEETING
By Michael Twomey
Presentation: Presentation by Sean McLaughlin of the
Managers Proposals for the Visual Uplifting of the Main Street
of the Town.
This presentation was based on shop owners, businesses and residents entering into the vision for heritage decoration of the Main
Street. Mr. McLaughlin said that owners and tenants should
choose colours for premises from the heritage catalogue. He presented slide show examples of shop fronts of Youghal that both
fitted the proposed model and those that needed refurbishment. He
advised members that the heritage colours are more muted and
that ’garish’ tones are to be avoided. He stated that gutters, drainpipes and window frames should be white and that mouldings
should not be the same colour as wall tones. The task for owners,
according to Mr. McLaughlin, is to work together to create an
overall positive impression. To facilitate the process during decision -making on refurbishment, Mr. McLaughlin said a ’referee’
would monitor the decision to ’prevent duplication’. He also stated that exceptions to the catalogue would include stonework and
brickwork, which should be kept in their original state, while windowsills should also be left untouched. Those fronts that have
’corporate identity’ should be ’tastefully done’ added Mr.
McLaughlin. The County Manager added that owners would benefit from architectural advice that would otherwise be extremely
expensive. She said the Council could offer to paint buildings as a
way of offering the owners a ’view of the heritage vision’. The
Town Clerk ventured that Development Contribution monies
could be used for this purpose before adding that the process
would ’take the jaded look from the town centre’. Cllr. Murray
warned that the time lapse between removing the recycling site at
Tides car park and the opening the new centre by the Railway
Station would leave users without cars in the area stranded. The
Town Clerk said Youghal had a ’state of the art civic amenity centre and kerbside collection’. He also stated the availability of private collectors for refuse. Cllr. Murray replied that there was no
facility for collecting glass with kerbside collection. Cllr. linehanFoley said all the bring sites had been removed from all areas in
the town while both the Mayor and the Town Clerk said the sites
were removed because of ’abuse’.
Report of the Town Clerk on matters arising from the minutes
of the monthly meeting held on 11th February 2008.
HOUSING & BUILDING:
1) The allocation of the first phase of Parklands amounting to
eleven social housing units (10 3 bed, 1 two bed units) will take
place this week. The anticipated handover time from the developer is within the next six to eight weeks. The successful applicants
will be required to undertake pre-tenancy courses and each tenancy offered will be for a period of twelve months initially.
2) We are concerned in relation to the initial response to the
Housing Needs Assessment currently being undertaken by the
Council. A public advertisement was placed in the Examiner and
Youghal News newspapers informing people of this assessment.
Letters and new forms were issued to each current housing applicant. Any person who has not completed these forms, needs to do
so immediately to ensure that they will be considered for future
Council Housing Schemes and Casual Vacancies. Initial evaluation interviews on received forms are currently underway.
ROADS & FOOTPATHS:
1. A tender report has been received from David Kelly Partnership
in respect of the DeValera Street Car Park Project (consisting of
the development of 37 car parking spaces). A contractor will be
appointed shortly with a view to commencing works in April.
2. A tender report has been received from David Kelly Partnership
in respect of the Church Street Heritage Regeneration Project.
Again a contractor will be appointed shortly with a view to commencing works in April.
3. Youghal Town Council have received notice of the Non
National Road Grant Allocation for 2008 from the Department of
Transport. This years allocation amounts to 287,000 (no increase
over 2007) and a report on same is currently being prepared by the
Town Engineer for presentation to the Members of the Council at
the April meeting.
WATERS & SEWERS:
1. The reservoirs are currently at full storage capacity with an
average daily demand of approximately 575,000 gallons per day.
2. I am unaware of any problems with the Waste Water Drainage
System and all pump stations seem to be working satisfactorily
currently.
PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT:
1. A planning application has been received from Cork County
Council for the laying of a new 350mm trunk water main from
Boola Waterworks to the Reservoirs at Cork Hill.
RECREATION & AMENITY:
1. The Millennium Garden underwent seasonal maintenance during the month of February. This involved the cleaning out of all
the ponds together with the removal of all the vandalised pond
structures (it is hoped to replace these with a more practical solution during the spring). The gates and archway have been painted
black and gold to correspond with the scheme throughout the
town. Five new seats have been provided and all the brick paving
powerwashed and cleaned.
2. As no funds were provided in the 2008 Council Budget for the
1798 Memorial Park, I have had to source other sources of funding from various agencies. I have managed to secure 26,000
which will be spent on increased lighting, new balcony seating,
planting and painting the park for the summer of 2008. Work has
already commenced on the park and orders have been placed for
the extra seating and lighting.
Votes of Congratulations.
Cllr. Linehan-Foley offered high praise to athlete, Sarah Ryan.
She added that the Council should acknowledge her recent
achievements with a letter congratulating the athlete.
Town Foreman’s Report.
Cllr. Casey asked on behalf of the fishermen for a tap to be
installed on the quayside. He informed members of complaints
from Prospect Farm about troublesome dogs running loose in the
area. The Cllr. concluded by seeking clarification as to why the
side gates of the Mall House are closed throughout the day. He
said members of the public had pointed out to him that the area
has always been open to the public in the past. Cllr. Burke pointed out that a section of footpath at the junction of Windmill Hill
and South Cross Lane has been left unfinished. The Cllr. called for
’extra ladders’ to be installed on Market Dock and Buttimer’s
Dock. He continued with requests to clean up jail steps, fix lighting at 139 North Main Street and heavy ponding at entrance to
Pitch and Putt club while thanking the Town Clerk for his efforts
in getting lights working at Seafield. Cllr. Linehan-Foley told the
Council that she received a request to have a handrail installed at
the Mall Strand to ease access for the disabled. She cited a
Kilcoran wall that has been weakened by subsidence and while
she acknowledged that the wall is ’privately owned’ she wondered
if the Council could contact the owner. The Cllr. wanted the public to know that the Millennium Garden playground is closed for
renovations and will reopen. "We are very lucky in this town to
have three playgrounds," she said. She then enquired as to why the
bus continues to stop by Bertie Dempsey’s ’when we all agreed
here to relocate the stop to the back street’. She said members of
the public had asked her why this was the case and that traffic congestion problems (the reason for relocation) continues. Cllr.
Revins said the change had been suspended while investigation is
carried out on health and safety issues regarding the back street
stop. The Town Clerk said he was ’aware of only one complaint’
about placing the new bus stop on Catherine Street. (This referred
to Cllr. Murray’s information at a previous meeting asking the
Council to reconsider the new bus stop as she had received a complaint from a woman who felt the stop was isolated and ’lonely’.
Cllr. Linehan -Foley added that the new bus stop was ’part of our
development plan’, she asked. "Why did Bus Eireann change it?"
Cllr. Murray said the woman in question ’must have phoned Bus
Eireann herself’. The Town Clerk suggested Cllr. Linehan-Foley
Youghal News.....March 20th 2008
YOUGHAL TOWN COUNCIL MARCH MEETING
phoned Bus Eireann herself’. The Town Clerk suggested Cllr.
Linehan-Foley bring a motion at the next meeting ’calling on Bus
Eireann to adopt the Council’s proposal’
She replied that it was ’unfair that we do things in the Chamber
and then it’s changed, it makes us look like fools’. The Cllr. then
added that she felt frustrated by the lack of activity on reopening
the Youghal-Cork railway line. "We need to take action, even if it
means getting the public involved with placards. We need to get
Iarnr d Eireann in here. We write letter after letter but nothing
happens,’ she said. The Town Clerk again advised she bring in a
motion. Cllr. Beecher complained of youth activity in Green Park,
particularly football playing. "I’d like to thank staff for the cleaning up of Father O’ Neill statue although his hand is still missing
and his head is loose," he said. He maintained that ’young families
and the elderly are afraid to go into the park’ because of the boisterous youth. He stated that ’ball playing should be banned’. Cllr.
Linehan-Foley took umbrage with the Cllrs. suggestion and said
young people could be ’doing worse’. "What harm are they doing
kicking a ball?" she asked. "They could be doing a lot worse like
drink and drugs. Where are they supposed to go?" she said. Cllr.
Beecher replied. "Out to the beach." He warned that flowerbeds
will be ’destroyed’ by those ’coming down from the estates’. The
issue of dog fowling was once again raised with the Town Clerk
advising that fines are at a national rate and abuse was a question
of personal responsibility. "They know who they are and they are
the same ones all the time," he said. Cllr. Beecher concluded by
asking that refuse illegally dumped behind No. 9 Dermot Hurley
be removed by the Council at the owner’s request. Cllr. Revins
said if he catches the dog owner fowling outside his premises
every morning ’they will get more than a fine’. He then asked if a
sign be erected outside the Bun Scoil to signify the disabled parking space and requested the space be painted blue. Cllr. Hennessey
remarked that signs on the Rhinecrew roundabout were obscuring
vision over the left shoulder on the third exit to the Breton road
and asked that the signs be rearranged. The Town Engineer had
good news for Cllr. Burke with the announcement that funds had
been secured for the extension of the outfall pipe on Front Strand
and funding would be available for works on SruthÆn na Sall post
Easter.
Cork County Council Items a) Report by Cllr. Murray.
Cllr. Murray said she has spoken to the offices in Cork County
Council (CCC) about her proposal for the amenity walkways and
has requested that the project be broken into two phases. She
informed members that a CCC motion from Cllr. Aherne called on
CCC to borrow money to build a permanent library in Youghal.
She went on to say that Cllr. Aherne expressed the view that the
rent being paid to River Gate Mall is ’exorbitant’. Cllr. Murray
refuted Cllr. Aherne’s claim and countered it by stating the rent for
the River Gate Mall premises was ’good value’ for money at
6.11c per sq. foot over 5,700 sq ft. She added that the CCC
Manager has ’no intention of borrowing’. Cllr. Linehan-Foley was
bemused by the information and called the rent ’dead money’. She
said she could not understand the logic in wasting money on rent
that ’could go towards a new building’. She also criticized CCC for
not having a public toilet in the library saying it was ’unheard of’.
Cllr. Murray responded to the toilet issue by stating that users can
be ’buzzed in by library staff’ and that it is not an issue. Mayor
Savage said he thought Cllr. Aherne’s motion was ’good’ adding
his belief that ’paying rent is ludicrous’. Cllr. Murray ascertained
that with being a member of the library committee she has worked
hard to get a permanent library for Youghal and cited St. Mary’s as
a possible location but was told the library had to be ’highly visible’. Cllr. Linehan-Foley remarked that there is ’no high visibility
where it is’. She added that before Cllr. Murray was elected the
Youghal Council had been presented with blueprint information
on a project for Collins Bakery to become the permanent library
and that Youghal was third on the list in the County. She said moving into River Gate Mall had moved Youghal down the list. Cllr.
Murray said membership has ’tripled’ and people are very happy.
She informed the Mayor on request that the contract for renting in
River Gate Mall was for 4 years and 11 months. Cllr. LinehanFoley, still exasperated, said. "We are paying dead money."
Clearly tired of the argument Cllr. Murray then stated. "I said to
myself before tonight if there is anymore of this carry on I will not
give another report. I will give it direct to the media." The Mayor
wanted clarification. "Are you saying you don’t want to report on
CCC issues?" Cllr. Murray replied. "I am fed up being ridiculed
and humiliated." Cllr. Linehan-Foley remarked that the library
was ’a local issue affecting Youghal town’. Cllr. Murray simply
replied. "Forget it, forget it." She then left the Chamber at this
point, returning a short time later. Following this debate matters
moved on to the odour emanating from the Civic Amenity site.
Cllr. Burke called the smell ’unbearable’ and at ’unacceptable levels’. He added. "Cork County Council appears to be non-compliant with section 6.2 of their licence." He said the environmental
welfare of the town should not be dependant on the ’whim of the
wind’. The AVR waste treatment site had also come under investigation from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) but
while it was acknowledged the plant had released odours Cllr.
Burke said information from the EPA clearly identified the fowl
odour as 90% sourced from the civic amenity site. Cllrs. Beecher
and McLellan backed Cllr Burke’s claim and criticized AVR for
their leak while the County Manager promised to ’urgently’ pass
on the concerns over the amenity site. Cllr. Casey again rasied the
issue on the delay in building a permanent fire station. He said the
men and women ’risking their lives’ deserved a better facility. Cllr.
Linehan-Foley said there was a change in design plans to make the
proposed building fit in with the Credit Union and the lifeboat station. The County Manger promised to have an update for Cllr.
Casey at the next meeting. Cllr. Beecher had a number of items to
raise with the Town Engineer which included: when the footpath
at the leisure centre would be completed, a disabled space for
Raheen Park, loose manhole covers at Dun CorÆn and the state of
the Hilltop Hotel. The Town Engineer replied that the leisure centre footpath would ’hopefully’ be finished by summer and said he
would ’check out’ the possibility of a disabled parking space in
Raheen Park. A discussion followed on derelict sites in relation to
the Hilltop Hotel. Cllr. Hennessey informed the Town Engineer
that the ’entrance to Seafield Court is always flooded’.
Mayor’s Business.
The Mayor announced he had attended his first Area Roads
Meeting and said he had secured 180,000 for lighting at
Millennium Court. The Town Clerk said he had contacted both
Waterford County Council and Cork County Council with the purpose of invoking the Section 58 Agreement in order to ’take control’ for the maintenance of the Rhinecrew roundabout and the
entrance of the N25 by-pass on the Cork side.
Planning Applications
Cllr. Liam Burke said the Main Street is becoming a hive of activity late at night with pubs, cabs and fast food outlets. He said the
noise levels late at night are a ’nuisance to residents’ who are suffering from ’sleep deprivation’. He added that vandalism to property and cars is common -place. "It’s a public order situation," he
said. For these reasons he urged the County Manager to reject the
application from Supermacs to extend their trading hours. He said
an extension would ’set a precedent for other fast food outlets’.
Ollie Casey supported this move while Cllr. Beecher reminded
members that ’there is already a fast food outlet operating until
2am in the area and it causes litter all over the place’.
Report of the Heritage Municipal Policy Committee by Cllr.
Burke.
Cllr. Burke reported on recent developments such as the 50metre
extension to the town walls wall top walk, which, he said,
Medieval funday will be extended to incorporate the entire weekend with live music provided on the Saturday night to entertain the
crowds.
Youghal News.....March 20th 2008
YOUGHAL TOWN COUNCIL MARCH MEETING
Report on the Harbour Municipal Policy Committee by Cllr.
Casey.
During this report Cllr. Casey informed members that Harbour
Master, Michael Kelly said the recent motion from Cllr. Murray
for the installation of a pontoon at the quay was not feasible, as a
pontoon ’would not survive the south easterly winds or depressions in this area’. It was also reported that the Town Clerk suggested to the committee a fund of 30,000 from a Marina proposal budgeted in 2003 should go towards a master plan for the entire
harbour. It was also agreed at the committee meeting that the Slob
Bank was an ideal location for a marina. The Harbour Master
added that ’infrastructure (is needed) within the town to facilitate
this provision’.
Report on Rapid Issues by Cllr. Revins.
Cllr. Revins said there was no report from RAPID this month.
However, he was able to confirm that a day care centre ’will go
ahead’ and that Youghal is ’back on the list for a primary care centre’.
Report on Claycastle Leisure Company by Cllr. Casey.
Cllr. Casey reported that a letter had been sent to Youghal Town
Council detailing the Leisure Centre’s proposed price increase for
2008. These were: Public Swimming Pool to increase to 7 per
adult, 4.20 per child and OAP and 21 per family. This is an
increase of 4.6%. Public Gym - no increase for adults and
teenagers but there is an increase of of 5%. A swim in addition to
either a gym visit or fitness class will be available for 1 extra.
Motion in the name of Cllr. Murray seconded by Cllr. Beecher:
was a ’great loss’ to the town and a ’sad day for Youghal’. Mayor
Savage concluded that the ’Council didn’t let them go’.
LETTER RECEIVED FROM
COMHALTAS CEOLTOIRI EIREANN
CRAOBH EOCHAILLE
IN RESPONSE TO THE MARCH
MEETING OF YOUGHAL TOWN
COUNCIL
11th March
Re: Mall Arts Centre
Dear Councillor.
I understand from reports of last night’s monthly Town Council
meeting that there seems to be some confusion regarding Ceolta Si
booking of the Mall Arts Centre. Before going on our recent trip
to China we were summoned to a meeting by the Arts and
Heritage Officer Mr Ger O Riordan to discuss our booking. We
understand that another booking was sought for the same dates.
We agreed to meet on our return from China, but alas when we
returned, our meeting had been cancelled. As the matter has now
re-appeared I would like to take this opportunity to state the longstanding Comhaltas relationship with Youghal Town Council and
the Mall Arts Centre.
During the Pre-Development, brainstorming and consultative
stages of the proposed Mall Arts Centre, Comhaltas along with
other Arts organisations was happy to input its ideas and perceived
needs for the Centre. When Youghal Town Council submitted the
application for a Government grant under the Access 2 Funding
Programme, it included a letter of support from Comhaltas outlining its commitment to the Centre. During this consultative
process Comhaltas committed to performing it’s then established
Thursday evening Ceolta Si Seisiun at the Mall Arts Centre.
Monday and Thursday were selected for Youghal Ceolta Si
Seisiuns as the neighbouring Ballyduff Booly House was held on
Wednesday evening while Cul Ceoil in Dungarvan was held on
Tuesday evenings.
When Micheal Ahern TD Minister of State finally opened the Mall
Arts Centre, Ceolta Si provided the musical entertainment on that
occasion. Comhaltas immediately booked the Centre for a Concert
on the Eve of St Patrick’s Day and also booked Thursday evenings
for July and August of that year. In year two of the newly opened
Mall Arts it was suggested in the Business Plan for the Centre that
the local Arts groups would form part of the new Board of
Management.
Sadly this did not happen and when Comhaltas sought to book its
usual Thursday evening for the following summer the Council
Official informed us that the Centre was given out on a first come
first served basis. A similar response was received the following
year, while in 2007 we were informed that no bookings would be
taken until Court days were identified. Having viewed the booking journal in September, November, and December 07, we found
that there were no bookings for July and August 08, so we duly
booked our preferred dates for 2008.
Thank you for taking the time to read this report we can assure you
that our story and our version of the success or otherwise of our
bookings for the Mall Arts Centre can be verified through the
usual channels. The Business Plan for Brœ na S presented to Ms
Mary Linehan Foley Mayor of Youghal Town Council on St
Patrick’s Day 2003 shows that the Mall Arts Centre was always
viewed as an integral part of the vision of Comhaltas. Should you
have any queries please do not hesitate to contact any member of
our committee.
"That Youghal Town Council call on the NRA to investigate as to
why no route is sign is posted for Killarney Via Youghal on N25".
Speaking on this motion Cllr. Murray said. "A lot of our business
comes in from Rosslare but a lot of it is going via Fermoy and
Lismore. We have an opportunity to do business in Youghal and
we should take it up with the NRA." Cllr. Beecher supported the
motion.
Any Other Business
Under any other business there was an expression of strong disappointment from a number of Councillors to the news that Dancing
Thru the Ages will not be performing their seasonal show at the
Mall Arts Centre this summer. The traditional troupe has opted to
take the show to Cork. Cllr. Revins said he was ’very upset’ at the
turn of events and was forthright in pointing the finger of blame at
Youghal Comhaltas. "We provided them with a site, they perform
in the Walter Raleigh, Brœ na S and Gazebos, do they want the
whole town?" he asked. The Cllr. was referring to a dispute over
Comhaltas booking Thursday nights at the Mall Arts Centre,
which was a regular night for Dancing Thru the Ages in the past
two years. The Town Clerk explained. "Both companies made
applications for the same dates. Neither company was willing to
accommodate the other. I asked the Arts Officer to mediate. A reconciliation meeting was set up. Both agreed but then one
(DTtheA) pulled out and decided to move elsewhere. The Mall
Arts Centre is there for everyone. It would be unfair to pick one
over the other. It’s not good for either show and not good for the
town. It is unfair to put the Council in this position." Cllr. Revins
said one individual ’wanted Thursday nights’. Cllr. Casey said it
was a ’sad day when two groups can’t reach agreement’. Cllr.
Murray said there would be a ’huge loss of revenue to the town’.
"Dancing Thru the Ages were working under a lot of pressure and
they have invested heavily in props and lighting and they didn’t
want anyone else using it without supervision. Let’s hope
Comhaltas can follow the act on Thursday nights. There is a lesson learned regarding bookings. We definitely lost the better
show," she said. Cllr. Hennessey also bemoaned the loss of revenue. "It brought in money, even if it was just people buying fags.
It was a great night out. You dressed up and not in t-shirt and jeans,
went to the show, then went to the pub for a couple of drinks to
talk about it. Comhaltas have Bru na S . They knew they Is Mise
(DTtheA) had Wednesday and Thursday nights," she said. Cllr. Micheal de Buitleir

The late James Jim Mulcahy
Rath Kinsalebeg
With sadness we recall the recent passing of Jim Mulcahy Rath
Kinsalebeg, which occurred on January 31st in the loving care of
the matron and staff of Youghal Community Hospital, he was in
his late 80’s and had been ill for just a short time prior to his death.
An industrious and hard working man Jim Mulcahy was a man of
the soil and he toiled honestly all of his life on the family farm in
Rath. Jim was a very strong willed and positive person, family and
friends recall the early years of Jim’s life when he ploughed with
horses, the pride he took in his work and counted the spoils of a
good days work in the perfection of a job well done and in the
warmth of a neighbourly turn. Typical of his vintage everything
was hard earned and Jim was very protective of his passions he
loved his car and the freedom to travel it brought to his life. He
lived life to the full he loved to dance and enjoyed nothing better
than a night of traditional music and song, or watch our traditional games on the telly.
Reposing at Egan’s funeral home Youghal Jim’s removal took
place on Friday evening. On Saturday morning requiem mass was
celebrated for the happy repose of his soul, Jim’s sister May Kelly
presently a patient in Youghal Community Hospital was silently
remembered in our prayers during the mass. Following mass Jim
was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.
He is sadly missed by his sisters Julia and May his brother Matt,
all his relatives neighbours and friends; to each of you we extend
our deepest sympathy. May he rest in peace.

been very successful.
Thanks to all who helped out during the winter months in organising the sessions and to parents for the many lifts in and out.

Yoga with Susan in Youghal
"I’m really looking forward to teaching Yoga in Youghal"
Yoga teacher and writer Susan Ni Rahilly says that she thinks
Youghal is a lovely place to teach such a wonderful thing as Yoga
to people. "It brings such relaxation and feeling of well-being,
that holding classes and courses at the Quality Hotel in Youghal
can only enhance the whole experience for everybody."
"I think that today, perhaps more than at any time during our history, people in the West are facing stresses and tensions that seem
to be so beyond our control. Living with family pressures,
finances and illness can make life hard to cope with. But thankfully Yoga, an age old system of working with the mind, body and
spirit, gives a way of taking some of the control back - giving ourselves time for rest, relaxation and renewal. And sometimes it’s
great just to get away from it all and be yourself, even if only for
a couple of hours or so stretching and feeling good in the space a
Yoga class provides."
Yoga also helps you to understand your body and recognise when
it’s time to do some preventative breathing or stretching. Of
course if you have, say, back pain due to major damage you’ll need
intensive one-to-one yoga guidance - but if aches and pains are
due to stress or minor injury you can learn quite quickly your own
simple yoga routine to relax. And learning about relaxation and
posture is so important.
"Just think about when you’re driving" says Susan, "you have a
stiff upper back. You reach behind you for something from the
back seat. What happens? Well, the chances are you’ll feel pain in
your lower back. That’s because the upper back is so stiff the
joints in the lower back are forced to move beyond their natural
range to stretch that extra inch." Yoga helps to get the whole spine
moving again. Bad posture is such a Western cultural thing now,
but once you feel that freedom of a spine that moves with ease, it’s
amazing what happens to your confidence and enjoyment of life.
There’s a wonderful lift to the spirits when you don’t have to live
with stress or pain any longer.
Susan’s classes and courses will start on Saturday 29th March and
there will initially be 4 Saturday mornings on the 29th and the 5th,
12th and 19th of April. "We’ll be in the Redbarn Suite on the first
floor which is a lovely room with views over the beach and bay.
The Gentle Yoga Class is at 9.30 to 11.00am and the Introduction
to Yoga course will be on at 11.00 am to 1pm." Says Susan.
Gentle Yoga is a slow and easy class taught in Susan’s own relaxed
style and is suitable for back problems, arthritis, the inflexible,
unfit and overweight. This class includes some slow, gentle Hatha
Yoga postures, breathing, meditation and relaxation. The fee for
this class is 60 euro for 4 classes and Susan says that hopefully this
will be an ongoing class if there’s enough interest.
The Introduction to Yoga course (part I) is a 4 week introductory
course to Hatha Yoga and is suitable for absolute beginners or
those wanting to refresh their practice. It includes Hatha Yoga postures, breathing, meditation and relaxation and again, if there’s
enough interest there’ll be an Introduction to Yoga part II course.
The course fee is 80 euro for 4 workshop sessions.
You won’t need any special equipment for your Yoga if your just
starting out as a beginner and want to try it, just wear something
soft that you can move easily in (not jeans preferably) and bring
something to put on the floor such as a large towel or blanket, and
also something warm for relaxation - again a blanket or fleece if
you have one. Susan has been teaching Hatha Yoga for over 8
years but, as she says "I was initially a Meditation teacher, I’ve
been teaching for over 18 years and used to do lots of work with
Relaxation. I think that learning Hatha Yoga in a lovely beachside environment at Redbarn will be a special experience and to
emphasise that I’ll leave you with this quote from Swami Vishnu
Devananda of the Sivenanda tradition of Yoga teaching: If you
never tasted honey, no matter how often I tell you that honey is
good you won’t understand until you try it. Yoga is not a theory
but a practical way of life, put yoga into practice and you will see
the benefit for yourself."

ANOTHER SNOOKER STAR FOR
YOUGHAL CYMS
Michael Hennessy son of Christy and Karen Hennessy of the
Market Square has all but qualified for the Irish U-14 snooker
team to play against Wales in June of this year. With just the championships left to play in April, Michael stands at No.5 in the rankings. 6 players qualify and Michael is far enough ahead of the 7th
ranked player to ensure his place in this year’s Irish team.
The grandson of the late Christy who for many years gave sterling
service to the C.Y.M.S. Michael has put in great effort over the
season and is well deserving of his place in the spotlight. He has
continued the C.Y.M.S. representation over the past 3 years following his brother James and his fellow member Christopher
Cooney. It is indeed a great honour for the C.Y.M.S. and particularly for his family.
Kenny Wight grandson of the late Jack Trihy another great stalwart of C.Y.M.S. teams over the years has an outside chance of
making the team. He currently lies one place off in 7th. This is a
superb achievement from a player who is underage again next
year. Kenny still has everything to play for in his final tournament
and we wish him every success. Other players involved and all
underage next year are Mark Flaherty at No16. Aaron Tobin at
No18 and Alan Revins at No 20.all these young boys have been a
credit to their families and the C.Y.M.S. and long may it continue.
The town is really proud of their achievements.Final confirmation
of placings will be given on completion of ranking events.

MCDONALD TREAT AS MARY LOU TAKES LISBON
WITH A PINCH OF SALT
By Christy Parker
Sinn Fein MEP Mary Lou McDonald ignored the parking space
reserved outside the Town Council offices Hall for her Youghal visit
and availed of the nearby car park instead. It may have been unintentionally symbolic but Ms. McDonald’s demeanour very much pronounced her a woman of the people as she greeted supporters in casual, chatty style. Not that there were many people about, common or otherwise, with just a handful of constituents accompanying SF Town
councillors Sandra McLellan and Michelle Hennessy.
Wrapped in a pitch-black coat offset by a healthy complexion, the articulate Dublin Central politician was on the Cork leg of a nation wide
mission to decry the impending Lisbon Treaty on which Ireland is the
sole EU country holding a referendum. The EU says it won’t recognise
a democratic ’No’ if Ireland delivers one but that’s for another day,
Senor. Meanwhile, Sinn Fein is the only Irish parliamentary party
opposing a Treaty that Mary Lou says is "particularly bad."
Q: So what’s wrong with it?
ML: We’ll lose our commissioner and half our voting weight at
Council of Ministers and hence our influence on European institutions.
Public services like health and education may become prone to marketing and competition, which is wrong. There’s no advance in terms of
workers’ rights or the environment. It supports nuclear energy and the
nuclear industry. Then there are unwelcome complications around
Defence and Single Foreign Policy...
Q: Oh. But doesn’t EU Commission Vice-President Margo
Wallstrom say indigenous nations can decide their own Defence
strategies?
ML: Only in terms of troop commitment. The government may want to
narrow it down to our ’triple lock’ system but this Treaty is also about
how you fashion foreign policy. ’Triple lock’ hasn’t stopped belligerent
American troops passing through Shannon airport. Lisbon will ask that
we increase our military spending and sign up to a common foreign policy, i.e a foreign Minister and a European diplomatic corp. I don’t think
Ireland’s foreign policy interests coincide with a British, French or
German foreign policy.
Q: Name three changes you’d make to the Treaty?
ML: 1. I’d insert a clause recognising the rights and responsibilities of
the new military neutrals, giving them equivalence in law with the
NATO members. NATO is all over this Treaty without one mention of
the military neutrals, except a torturous formation of words that marks
us out as an oddity.
2. Insert a clause that defines and protects public services. I’d recognise
the market and competition but draw limits and say in law that the market will not intrude into health or education. These are basic services
that citizens have a right to expect and its inappropriate to turn a profit
on them.
3. Discard the institutional changes in terms of the Commission. I think
every member state has a right to have a commissioner. But there’s a
dozen changes I’d make
Q: Is it practical for every country to have a commissioner?
ML: It’s practical and necessary. It’s insane that the key agenda setter
in Europe doesn’t have representation from each Member State. The
trick in political influence is to be in early. If you intercept something
way through the programme, its very difficult to change it. That’s the
value of being at that table.
Q: Do people really care?
ML: I think once people see how big and central the issues are they will
take a bigger interest. I think overall Irish people very much have a
desire to be part of Europe though its difficult to get them to engage
with it.
Q: Do you think the Treaty is deliberately presented as complicated?
ML: Very possibly. I think a decision was taken among European leaders to let it creep up on people. A political cabal holds a view of where
Europe should go but also know that their view differs with what people want. Political elites and power structures protect themselves. Some
politicians believe they now better than the people. I see it around me.
SINN FEIN:
Q:
What lessons have SF learned from the last general election trauma?
ML:
We’ve learned a lot about the necessity to project our political
message in a way that’s relevant, contemporary and accessible. We’ve
learned to go back to basics in terms of what we’re good at -organising
and community activism. We’ve also learned that things can turn very
quickly and we need to have a much better capacity to read things.
Q: Does SF have a big problem with voters associating it with 30
years of Northern Ireland’s problems?
ML: Yes, because we’re an all-Ireland party and yes because there is a
hangover from the conflict. But in the course of the election, though the
results didn’t reflect it, I found the level of goodwill from people much
more significant than I had expected.
Q: Will issues surrounding the Gerry McCabe, Jean McConville
and Robert McCartney murders continue to affect your election
performances?
ML: I think people of a certain mindset might try to exploit those tragic cases. The truth is, a lot of people suffered and people lost their lives.
The truth is, none of that will go away, nor should we wish it to go
away. We’ve been saying for some time that we need some sort of a
truth recover process to feed into that sense of reconciliation.
Q: But are these issues compromising your position in the South?
ML: I don’t think so.
Q: You’re dragged into them nonetheless
ML: Look, we’re coming out of an incredibly difficult cycle of violence
over decades. Anyone who imagines emerging easily from that or that
a peace process is un-problematic is wrong. But I don’t feel either or the
party or me are damaged by these things.
Q: Isn’t being an All-Ireland party a two-edged sword because
what happens on one side will affect the other?
ML: Absolutely. And we seem to be constantly fighting elections. Prior
to last year’s election we were incredibly busy in negotiations with the
British and DUP and the issue of policing. Then we faced into a
Southern election. That’s a dilemma in being an All Ireland party. But
Irish politics is in transition and Sinn Fein is in the process of becoming mainstream. I think that throws up challenges for other parties and
for us.
Q: You brought baggage into the South; some associate SF support
with beer-swelling, Celtic supporting, confrontational yobbos.
Agree?
ML: Nationalists don’t all correspond to that image. I’m not saying we
don’t have young guys in Celtic shirts but it’s not the typical image.
Republicans and SF are a very diverse group. People say, ’you’re not
very typical of what we’d expect of SF’ and I say, ’Why not? Are you so
caught up in your own stereotypes? I’m not untypical; lots of women of
my age and background support Sinn Fein.
Q: Do you think you get a fair media representation then?
ML: There is a very definite bias.
Q: Why?
ML: Lot of reasons. Censorship ended officially but for many people it
carries on unofficially. For some elements, the status quo is a comfortable place and we’re seen as new kids on the block and irritants. We
argue a different type of politics and I think a lot of people would prefer we weren’t doing it. But as the phrase goes, (smiles) ’We haven’t
gone away you know."
IMMIGRATION:
Q: You have said that ’people turn against each other people but
it’s the system that causes it’. Explain that in terms of immigration.
ML: If we allow a racist outlook to develop here, we’ll cause a catastrophe that will diminish us all. Nobody will win. Secondly, in areas
like equal pay, conditions, and public service, this government must get
things right. When Irish workers can be displaced by exploited foreign
labour, it’s setting up a nightmare collision. Equally so regarding access
to school places, housing and so on. If the government doesn’t deal with
the bread and butter issues, then its not serious about creating a harmonious, integrated Ireland.
Q: What are your views on the current immigration process?
ML: We need to modernise an archaic system. It’s difficult to get into
Ireland even for work purposes! But if you have a booming economy
people are going to come here and Irish people must understand we are
a diverse society now. There is no turning the clock back. Obviously
anyone looking at the phenomenon of such strong emigration from
Africa needs to be concerned about it; not just because of Europe but
because its bad for Africa. That’s one area where Europe can be very
effective if we get the politics right.
Q: Finally, as an MEP and having an in-depth knowledge of the
pan-European psyche
ML: Yes?...
Q: Do you think Dustin has any chance?
ML: "I’ve seen less talented turkeys doing well in Europe."
(Ok, I made up the last bit)

HALL OF FAME WELCOMES
WILLIE O’MAHONEY
By Christy Parker
Athlete Willie O’Mahoney was inducted as
the 2007 Usual Place Hall of Fame sports
personality at the recent Annual Awards
ceremony. The 62-year old grandfather
received the accolade for outstanding
commitment and contribution to his sport
over a career spanning -thus far- almost 40
years. Former Olympic silver medallist
and Sports Council of Ireland CEO, John
Treacy, presented the Inch native with a
Clashmore crystal trophy.
Willie, a salesman at Broderick’s hardware
shop on North Main Street, has remained a
member of Youghal Athletic Club since joining as a 14 year old.
"I remember a bunch of us from Inch called to (the late) Paddy
Cooney to join what was then the Youghal Athletic and Cycling
Club," he recalls. Their mission, he says, was inspired by such
achievements as those of Youghal’s Paddy Coleman, an Irish
champion over a mile and across country.
A lot of track, field and road has bridged the years between that
knock on Paddy Cooney’s door and his most recent circuit representing his club in a four-mile Masters (over 60’s) County Road
Championship, earlier this month. March also saw him complete a
seven-kilometre Munster cross-country Masters race in Tralee and
a Ballycotton 10.
Through the years, over all grounds and distances, indoors and
outdoors, Willie has raced, triumphed and lost against a vast array
of friends, strangers and admirers the length and breath of Ireland.
Sprints and seven Irish marathons have been amongst the milestones on the road from Inch to the Hall of Fame.
Off the track, he has been treasurer of the East Cork Board since
1970, forming part of an administration that has nursed through
athletes-cum-acquaintances like Sonia O’Sullivan, John Treacy
and Marcus O’Sullivan. "I’ve filmed a lot of their happy homecomings too," says Willie, in reference to a secondary passion for
video, which he sometimes aligns with athletics.
In 1974, Willie moved to Gortroe where he and Macroom-born
wife Breda, -also an athlete- reared two girls and two boys. The
children inherited their parents’ affinity for sport (daughter Sharon
has represented Ireland in athletics and orienteering) and Willie
recalls weekends "when the whole family would head off to compete in one competition or another somewhere in Ireland."
Teetotal and a non-smoker, Willie’s early career saw him focus
largely on track & field and cross-country. He was part of the
Youghal team that won County Junior, Intermediate and Novice in
the mid 1960’s. In that same era, when television sets were three
to a street, road running became immensely popular in Ireland
both amongst runners and spectators. As Youghal Athletic Club
treasurer, Willie played a role in inaugurating the annual and legendary New year’s Eve ’round-the-houses’ race, in which the runners set off with the old year and returned with the new one.
Up the road, another race awaited. In 1978 Willie and John Walshe
from Ballycotton lined up with 29 others for the first
Ballycotton10 road race. This month the two friends were amongst
the 2,200 to compete, having not missed a single year in between.
Individual rewards were mostly participatory through Willie’s
peak years but he began to pick up a lot of indoor and outdoor
Team and Individual County and Munster medals, from ’over 35’s
level upwards. Then in Nenagh in 2007, after "umpteen 2nd and
3rd’s" came that elusive first All Ireland title in the Masters 400
metres. Forty years of training had paid off!
He was quickly back training of course, relishing those long, fulfilling hours along Gortroe’s roads, Redbarn’s strand and
Glenbower’s woods. He trains mostly alone nowadays but the
yearly schedule remains almost unchanged since 1962.
"Winter is cross country, indoors in January, Ballycotton 10 in
March, Munster track& field in May and road races through the
summer, with the Masters in Tullamore in August," he reels off
enthusiastically. His philosophy remains unchanged too. "It’s all
about the joy of competing. If you win that’s brilliant but it’s primarily a fantastic way of life. I’ve been blessed," he says.
It would probably not be inaccurate to say the 2007 Hall of Fame
inductee has, accumulatively, run to the moon and is nearing home
on the way back having diverted round Mars for the scenery. But
what else would a star do?
AQUATREK NAVIGATES
ITS FIRST AWARDS DINNER
By Christy Parker
Sixteen students from Aquatrek’s inaugural Day Skipper
(Navigation) theory course received their certificates at the business’s first Awards Dinner at the Walter Raleigh Hotel last weekend. The sixteen represented the course’s full contingent and
ranged from 16 to 70 years.
Wexford’s Justin Slattery, the first Irishman to win the world’s
most famous yacht race, the Volvo Ocean Race, in 2005-06, presented the certificates. Revenue from the 30 per head event, plus
raffle proceeds for many prizes kindly donated by local businesses, went towards the Lifeboat service and music came courtesy of
Martin & Jason.
John Innes who, along with fellow lifeboat crewman John Griffin,
established Aquatrek last year, complimented all who undertook
the course, which ran twice weekly from October to February at
the Quality Hotel. "They gave it everything and when it got tough,
we rowed in behind them," said John with apt analogy.
The syllabus covered "navigation to a middle/high level" according to John and covered such aspects as, sea safety, survival and
life saving techniques, on board fire safety, navigation, racing and
life jacket procedure. "Every boat owner or sailor wants to reach
Yachtmaster qualification, which divides into shore based -which
is theory- and practical. These people are now way there, having known nothing about it last October," John explained.
The students ranged from experienced to novice and one of those
surprised to know what he didn’t know was Peter Murray, who has
had four decades of rocking boats, so to speak. "Its unbelievable
what we learnt. This course will make a huge difference to me but
I also know there is much more to learn and I will be signing up
for further courses," he said.
Peter, who co-owns a 22ft Trophy powerboat, at times found the
three-hour sessions less than plain sailing. "There were difficult
parts and the homework reminded me of my schooldays," he
laughs. "But it all ties in with what Aquatrek are doing, which is
the best thing to happen in Youghal for many a year.
Justin Slattery, congratulated all present. Later, the man who has
raced round the world several times, including as crewman on a
world record 58-day odyssey in 2004, recalled his first boat experience. "As a teenager I asked someone at my local club to let me
take a dinghy out. I spent half the day upside down and swimming
in the harbour. I decided to take a sailing course immediately!
Justin, 33, recommends doing courses before purchasing a boat.
"That way you learn safety and also may find out the boat you had
in mind is not actually what you need at all," he says. "On courses you meet people who will give you very good advice before its
too late."
Meanwhile, its almost launch time for Aquatrek’s summer 2008.
"Last year was extremely successful and to be honest the poor
weather gave us a chance to learn as we went along ourselves,"
says John. He adds. "Things are looking extremely promising for
this year and a if we get a good summer I can see the harbour
teeming with boats."

ROOM PLANS
CREATING an
accurate plan of a
room is vital
before undertaking a redesign
project to get a
clear idea of the
space
you’re
working
with.
Estate
agents
would estimate
that 90 per cent of
homeowners don’t
know the dimensions of their rooms. Most people base their calculations on an exaggeration of how they view their rooms.
So, they are surprised that the "box bedroom" is actually larger than they guessed, but a "spacious conservatory" is often smaller. This mistaken view reinforces another truism of interior design
that "box bedroom" clutter makes a space look smaller, while
"conservatory" light creates a feeling of space.
Measure up and draw a plan
Before making any changes to the room itself, measure up and
draw a to-scale floor plan. Drawing a room floor plan will clearly
outline the kind of space available:
SMALL - if either dimension is less that 3m (10’), then the room
would be classified as small, but don’t panic, efficient use of space
and a few design tricks will overcome this.
Long and thin - if the length of the room is more than three times
the width, then this is known as the "corridor" effect and, if there
are windows at each end, inventive use of lighting will be needed
to "open up" the space.
LARGE - most homeowners see large rooms as a blessing, but if
either dimension is greater than 9m (30’) furniture placing will be
vital to overcome the un-welcoming "warehouse effect".
Note the immovable
The key to successful design is to detach yourself from what is
currently in the space, however, some things can’t be moved without a great deal of extra work, so note the position of doors, windows and radiators on the plan.
It is also important to mark "sweeps" on the plan - the space
required to open doors or French windows. Be careful not to place
furntiure in the path of sweeps. The same is true if the furniture
has drawers or doors that need space to open. Power points, telephone and aerial sockets are less important, but may influence
some decisions, so it might be a good idea to note them on the
plan.
Furniture cut-outs
If large items of furniture must remain in a room, but you would
like to experiment with locations, measure the item and cut a card
to scale, move this around the floor plan to assess the options. It’s
a lot less tiring than physically moving the furniture!
Function and traffic
Consider carefully what the room is actually used for and how frequently different areas of it are used. For example, a dining room
is likely to require a table, but the space may double as an office
and the room may serve as a walkway for access to other areas. So
don’t place a table where it will block traffic and remember to
leave space for a work station. There are more specific tips on
these principles in the room sections.
Creating a floor plan in this way ensures you are aware of the correct dimensions of a room and the constraints of power points,
radiators and household use, but it frees the imagination to completely re-arrange the contents of a room.

FIND A TRADESMAN
What to look out for
- High pressure sales people from so-called specialists.
- Do not sign anything you have not read or do not understand.
- Advance payments, particularly at the start of the job, should be
avoided.
- Demands for cash payments. You are only fuelling the black
economy and putting yourself at risk from rogue traders.
What to do if things go wrong
- Speak to your builder if you think things are not right. Try and
resolve problems quickly, do not let them fester.
- If your builder does not sort things out after you have spoken to
him, put your complaint in writing.
- If there are still problems, get further advice. Depending on the
problem, consult a solicitor or building standards authority.
IF you’re looking for a good builder but don’t know where to start,
follow these helpful guidelines to make sure you get the right person for the job.
Recommendation
- Ask for references and names of previous clients. Speak to them
and look at their previous work, if possible.
- Deal with an established firm
- Make sure they have an office address, telephone number and use
headed notepaper.
- Check they are a member of a reputable trade association, and if
VAT is being charged, make sure there is a VAT number shown.
- Be clear about what you want
- Get a written specification and estimate.
- Agree any stage and final payments before work starts.
- Get more than one estimate.
- Avoid changing your mind halfway through a job - it usually
costs more and causes delays.
- Ask for an insurance-backed warranty for the work.

Youghal Town Council has a large programme of housing works upcoming in the immediate and near future.

PLANNING
AVOID a home improvement nightmare by following our essential guide to DIY preparation. Follow our tips to ensure you
achieve real improvements, while saving time and money.
Planning your decorating
Planning sounds boring but it does save time in the long run. It
helps you think the job through, make all those difficult decisions
about colour-scheming, and get together everything you need
before you start work.
Budget
If you’re going to redecorate a room, begin by deciding how far
you’re going to go. Will you just repaint the walls, ceiling and
woodwork? Will you be papering the walls for the first time, or do
you want to replace the paper you already have? And how about
changing the carpet and curtains, even the upholstery and the lighting? These decisions will often depend on the size of your budget.
You can probably do a quick room repaint for £50, but add
some new wallpaper and you’ll at least double the spend. More
extensive changes than this will definitely have you dipping deep
into your savings. The choice is yours, of course, but be sure you
know what you’re in for before you start.
Start a file
Unless you like white rooms, you’ll need paint colour charts, wallpaper and even fabric samples to help you decide which products
to use. Buy a cardboard pocket file or a scrapbook from a stationer’s to keep them all in.
- Pick up free colour charts from the DIY stores
- Ask for samples of unwrapped rolls of wallpaper and borders on
display
- For fabric samples, try the curtain shops and department stores in
your local high street
- Local markets can be an excellent source of cheap fabrics
- Tear pages out of monthly home magazines for colour-scheme
ideas
- Many magazines have separate stockists lists at the back for all
the relevant product details
Plan your time
Your time is the free ingredient of any project, but you still have
to work out how much of it is needed for the job. Don’t underestimate how long things can take. Just preparing a room for redecorating - clearing the furniture, taking everything off the walls,
washing down surfaces, patching up any damage, covering up the
carpet or stripping it and so on - could take a day at least.
Allow a whole weekend for a simple repaint, and two if you’re
paper-hanging, tiling or laying new flooring as well. This might
sound a lot, but you’ll feel much better if you set yourself a realistic timetable and are able to keep to it as you go along. Everyone
hates a job that drags on and on when you thought you could be
done in a day.
Get organised
Last but not least, make sure you know exactly what you’re up
against by reading through the appropriate DIY project in our
guide.
For example, a bathroom makeover could involve replacing all
the old wall tiles (or tiling over them), painting the ceiling and the
woodwork and putting down some new cork tiles. You could even
fix that annoying dripping tap while you’re at it.
By doing this now, you’ll be able to work out what order to do
things in and then organise your shopping and work time accordingly. For this particular job, you should do tiling (the messiest bit)
first, then painting and finally flooring. But before you can begin
work, you have to estimate how much of everything you need.

PLANNING
M. Lyons
BEFORE embarking on a DIY
project, it s essential that you
take the proper safety precautions. Remember that, if in
doubt, always consult a professional. Here are some tips to
help your home improvements
go smoothly and safely.
Paving Contractor
Safety tips
- Wear protective clothing including safety goggles, gloves and
dust mask when working with potentially hazardous materials
such as glass or spray paint. It is also advisable to wear a mask
when working in a dusty environment e.g. sawing wood or MDF.
When painting, or using any material that generates toxic fumes
or dust, keep the room well ventilated. Never smoke while painting or standing close to a freshly painted area.
- Always use the correct tools for the job. It is worth investing in
high quality equipment as this will be safer and will probably do
the job quicker.
- Store tools in a safe place, out of the way of children and pets.
Keep them in a box or a rack.
- When using knives, always cut away from you. Use a baton as
a guide and run a sharp knife along the edge of it. Always store
knives securely.
- When fixing or checking electrical appliances or connections,
always switch off the power and remove the fuse or circuit breaker (MCB). If you’re fixing an electrical appliance, switch off the
appliance at the socket and pull out the plug. Wear rubber-soled
shoes when working on electrics.
- Always keep a chemical fire extinguisher in the house. Never
use water to put out a fire in an electrical appliance. Gas and electrical work is best left to a registered professional.
- When using a power drill, choose a model that has a plastic nonconducting body. Unplug the drill before fitting parts and remove
the chuck key before switching it on. Avoid wearing loose clothing or jewellery, which could get caught in the drill.
- Ladders are one of the main causes of DIY accidents. Erect the
ladder according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Never lean to
one side as you could lose balance.
- Don’t rush as you’re more likely to have an accident. Carefully
plan the job before you start work. Know your limitations and
consult a professional if you are unsure. It’s also a good idea to
ask someone if they can help you.
- Take extra care when removing artex or textured paint from
walls as these materials may contain asbestos. Safety precautions
must be followed when handling and disposing of asbestos.

Victorious St Patrick’s
Weekend for Comhaltas
The local branch of Comhaltas receives a brace of awards over St
Patrick’s weekend. Having received first and second prizes in the
Grupai Cheoil competition on Saturday evening the branch top up
a great weekend when they won the Fr O Sullivan Trophy for beat
cultural group in the Youghal Parade on Sunday.
Feis Matthew
For the first time, Feis Maitiœ, a Cork institution in the world of
the arts and the development of young talent, included Irish traditional music in its programme. On the evening of Saturday 15th
March, a bus of nearly fifty young musicians left Brœ na S in
Youghal and returned as champions.
The Youghal branch of Comhaltas Ceolt ir
ireann has been promoting Irish traditional music in east Cork for twenty five years
and its junior ranks have seen a recent upsurge of interest. The
under 16 competitors, a group of more than twenty young musicians collectively named LÆr na Cruinne, won the top prize at Feis
Maitiœ, coming first in the Grœpa Ceoil competition.
A younger group, named Dra ocht an OileÆin, had their first performance on the city stage. Together only a matter of weeks, their
progress has been phenomenal and they achieved second place in
the under 13 competition. Both groups played a carefully
rehearsed medley of tunes, many of which had local lore and significance attached.A large number of parents and supporters were
in Father Matthew Hall for a wonderful evening’s entertainment.
With more events and competitions ahead, plans are being put in
place for these young east Cork musicians to perform in Youghal
for the summer. They are also making links with other groups
around the county, as well as in Wales and further a field, all of
whom hope to visit Youghal and Brœ na S in the coming months.
Congratulations to Jo Burke and Aidan Morrison who were also
prize winners in solo competitions. All competitors did their mentor Daithi Kearney proud on the day. Branch teachers Aisling
Pearce, Louise Keating, Sinead Mansfield, and Aoife Butler also
supported Daithi in turning out both groups.
Youghal Parade
"Hats and flags from around the World" was the theme selected for
this year’s Youghal parade. Influenced by the global exploits of
Ceolta S, branch members donned hats from many countries
around the world. Flags from the various countries visited by
Ceolta Si were also on display. These countries were Ireland,
Wales, France, Mexico, Italy, China, and Check Republic.
Having travelled the world in the promotion of Irish Culture,
Comhaltas is always proud to perform here at home in Youghal,
for events like the Annual St Patrick’s Day Parade, the turn on of
the Christmas lights, Festivals, the tourist season, monthly concerts at Bru na Si, and other social and charitable events.
After the parade Comhaltas returned to the Local GAA Centre for
the Annual Mol an
Oige Concert and
Ceili. Everyone
was in a celebratory mood and

Alfie Considine, section secretary CWU presents the scroll in appreciation for his service to the union
Youghal interest in the Mens Novice Munster Championship
ended Thursday 6th March when Wayne Fitzgerald was defeated
by Din Carey of Templederry in their semi-final meeting. In what
was proved to be a very competitive match Wayne and Din kept
very close on scores, however at the end of the day it was a strong
serving game from Din that separated the two and ended up with
Din qualifying for the Munster final. Next up for the Club will be
the Fermoy Open which is being held on the weekend of March
29th & 30th. Please note that this competition has moved out a
week due to the conflict with Easter Weekend. To date we have
seven adults signed up and going to compete in the men s novice
section. For four of these players this will be their first competitive outing. More details will follow in coming weeks.
Further out on the horizon the big event from the club will be on
the weekend of April 5th & 6th when we have the honor of cohosting the Munster Junior Doubles Championships with
Touraneena Racquetball Club. This is already lining up to be a
great weekend and we are expecting in the region of fifty youths
to be competing locally. We are well on the way to ensuring a
good Youghal welcome to all those visiting.
The club continues to grow and over the past few weeks we had
no less than nine people join (5 men, 2 ladies & two youths: U10
& U12). We look forward to seeing them in the coming weeks and
months. In an effort to integrate new players into the club and
widen your circle of players we are also planning on holding a
closed competition for local members. Further details will be

KILLEAGH/INCH COMMUNITY COUNCIL
A meeting of the above was held in Inch Community Hall on
Thursday 6th March with 19 members in attendance. This was the
first meeting of the newly elected committee. Newsletters were
distributed to members for distribution to all households in the
Parish.
The results of the Needs Survey which was carried out in conjunction with the recent elections was then discussed. Topping the
survey were road improvements, crime prevention, amenities for
the youth and community care. A number of sub-committees
were then established to work in these areas.
- A NRA sub-committee was established to deal directly with the
National Roads Authority with regard to the proposed upgrading
of services in Killeagh. These services include water, sewerage,
traffic calming and footpaths. A public meeting is being sought
with the National Roads Authority to discuss the proposed works
and to allow the people voice their concerns regarding the disruption of traffic and the inconvenience which will arise while the
proposed works are in progress.

Question
I’m unhappy with a recent experience I had when hiring a taxi.
Where can I make a complaint?
Answer
The Commission for Taxi Regulation has overall responsibility for
regulating taxis, hackneys and limousine drivers.
It deals with complaints relating to:
Š Overcharging or other problems with fares
Š The conduct or behaviour of the driver
Š The condition or cleanliness of a vehicle
Š The hiring of the vehicle.
The Commission operates a consumer information line that provides information on the hiring of taxis, hackneys and limousines
and advises callers about making a complaint. If you wish to make
a complaint, you can obtain a form from the information line at
Lo-call 1890 60 60 90 or you can download it from www.taxiregulator.ie.
When the Commission receives the complaint it will send an
acknowledgement letter. Once the complaint has been investigated, the Commission will decide whether to take further action. If
it does, it can either issue a formal warning or proceed with prosecution in court.
If the complaint is about a driver who was smoking in the vehicle,
you can report the details to the Office of Tobacco Control compliance line at Lo-call 1890 333 100. If the complaint relates to
criminal behaviour then it is a matter for An Garda S ochÆna and
you can contact your local Garda station to report it.
An Garda S ochÆna is also responsible for property that is lost in
taxis and hackneys. Lost property in Dublin is stored at its office
in Dublin Castle and you can make enquiries at the Property
Room or (01) 666 9857. Outside Dublin you can enquire at your
local Garda station.

By Christy Parker
It’s not quite -or even nearly- flying to the
moon but Ian Broderick’s career is certainly taking off with Nasa. The Youghal electrician has just embedded himself with the
American space agency on a three-month
’upskilling’ course being run in conjunction with FAS.
The futuristic electronics programme will
focus on the science of alternative energy
and require the 24-year old to study variously at Florida’s Institute of Technology
and the University of Florida, alternated
with work practice at the Florida Solar
Energy Centre at Nasa’s base in Cape Canaveral, 30 miles from
the Kennedy Space Centre. "People naturally associate Nasa with
space travel but there is a lot more goes on there," he says.
There were 120 applicants nationally for Nasa’s expenses-paid
places and the Youghal man is one of seven electricians amongst
the chosen 20, which also includes seven plumbers and six heavy
vehicle mechanics on relevant courses.
Ian, who lives at Carleton village with his brother Colin, is the son
of Dennis and Bettie Broderick and works for the family hardware
& electrical store in North Main Street. Bright and talkative, he
qualified as an electrician with FAS last March, following a brief
stint studying civil engineering at WIT that ultimately didn’t
appeal.
Last December, his former Cork FAS co-ordinator Ken Quinn
interrupted Ian’s dreams of a travelling trip to Canada to recommend he apply for the FAS/Nasa opportunity. Anything involving
America’s Space Agency seems sure to be kick-ass intense and so
it proved with Ian’s "gruelling 40-minute interview" in which
"they wanted to know everything about my life!"
They probed as to what he knew of solar energy. "Technically very
little," the former busker, disc jockey and drummer informed
them, before announcing his awareness that "renewable energy is
going to be a big part of people’s lives in years to come." He told
them his dad’s business would have to react to those needs. He let
them know why felt he should be chosen, that he was honest,
hardworking, eager to learn and wouldn’t waste their time. They
had no reason to doubt him and two weeks later Nasa had replaced
Montreal on his immediate horizon. Had he not quit smoking
months previously he’d probably have lit up a cigar.
Some of Nasa’s top technicians and engineers will tutor the
course, which swathes four modules: solar photovoltaic (converting solar energy into electricity), wind turbines for houses and
small businesses, fibre optic cabling for communications and
smart systems for homes. Ian is not unaware of their significance.
"Nasa is at the cutting edge advanced technology. Their engineers
are scientists. The experience, knowledge and certs I get here will
be very important to my future," he asserts.
He sees the future already present. "Top hardware and building
suppliers like Chadwicks now have renewable energy sections and
employ engineers," he muses. "Solar panels for houses may not
yet be practical because it takes a lot to power one house," he proceeds, "but they are now deployable and beneficial in big businesses where there is ample space."
For his own part, FAS/Nasa requires he send reports hone every
three weeks before actively "spreading the word" in his workplace
on his return. Meanwhile it won’t be all about overheating at Cape
Canaveral. "We have weekends off and Miami is only three hours
away. Orland, Disneyland and Universal Studios are just down the
coast," he ponders. Sounds like he’ll be investing in energy all

The Emer Casey Foundation Update:
The inaugural Emer Casey memorial 10k, which took place
on the 27th of May 2007 was a phenomenal success. There
was tremendous support, goodwill and generosity in the
build up to the race and this resulted in a very well organised
and enjoyable day. The 800 plus participants in the race came
from all over the country together with representatives from
Scotland, the U.K., Australia, Switzerland, Germany and the
U.S.A. The 10k was very kindly sponsored by Matheson
Ormsby Prentice Solicitors, Dublin. Gerard Galvin’s goodybags also ensured that nobody went home empty handed. The
overwhelming support from the local community ensured
that everybody was well fed after the race with musical entertainment provided by J.J. Cooley and his band. The local
Pobalscoil na Trion ide was a very welcome haven from the
unforgiving elements with hot showers and teas all round.
The Emer Casey Foundation would like to thank everybody
who participated in the run/walk and to acknowledge the
very generous donations and sponsorship received.
Following the establishment of the Emer Casey Foundation,
friends and supporters have generously organised and run
several significant fundraising events. Thanks to this overwhelming support and enthusiasm from donors and fundraising organisers, The Emer Casey Foundation is now able to
make an initial donation of 160,000 to the DISCOVARY
research consortium. This research group is directly engaged
in addressing the pathogenesis of the most silent and deadliest of all cancers affecting women.
This consortium is composed of researchers from several
Irish institutions, whose aim is to develop a test for the early
detection of ovarian and uterine cancer. These cancers are
two of the most difficult cancers to detect and the development of an early test for their occurrence has the potential to
save many lives in Ireland and abroad. The director of this
consortium, Professor John O’Leary is director of pathology
at the Coombe Women’s hospital and professor of pathology
at Trinity College Dublin. The DISCOVARY research team
is composed of gynaecologists, oncologists, pathologists,
molecular biologists, bioinformaticians, cell biologists, surface chemists, pharmacologists and nurse specialists who
have constructed a research pipeline that enables them to
carry out individual yet linked projects. In this way, the consortium is broad-based with investigators from University
College Dublin (UCD), University College Cork (UCC),
Dublin City University (DCU), University College Galway
(UCG) and Trinity College Dublin (TCD). The consortium
has also established substantial research links with worldleading professors in the USA both at the George Mason
University Centre for Applied proteomics and molecular
medicine and the department of obstetrics and gynaecology
at the University of California in Los Angeles.
The Emer Casey Foundation has agreed to fully fund two
post-graduate researchers on a full-time basis for three years.
These researchers will be based in TCD and UCD and will
focus their research on (a) protein signatures in early and
recurrent ovarian cancer and (b) developing novel therapeutic approaches in cisplatin resistant ovarian cancer patients.
The good work of the Foundation continues with the second
Emer Casey memorial 10km road race in Youghal, Co. Cork
on Sunday May 25th 2008. Many thanks to all the wonderful
friends, supporters and contributors who have given of their
time, money and efforts to establish and develop the important work of the Emer Casey Foundation.

Youghal s Anne McAuliffe is
Young Bookseller of the Year
Anne McAuliffe, of Youghal, has been
chosen from among contestants across
the whole of Ireland as the first ever
winner of the Cathal Elliott award for
the "Young Bookseller of the Year".
The award, established in the memory
of popular book trade guru Cathal
Elliott, who died in 2007, aims to
recognise and reward hard work and
talent amongst Ireland’s young book- Anne with Richard Madeley
sellers.
Anne received her trophy and her prize cheque at the Irish
Booksellers Association dinner dance, held in the Galway Bay
Hotel on Saturday the 1st March.
The judges were particularly impressed with Anne’s commitment
to customer service. Maria Dickenson of the Booksellers
Association said Anne is a deserving winner of this new award.
She has worked hard to build relationships with her customers and
has contributed to many events at Eason Dungarvan. The judges
felt what distinguished Anne and Eason Dungarvan from all of the
their nationwide competitors is their ability to provide an effective and efficient service on one-off book orders at one end of the
spectrum, whilst at the same time having the capability to evoke
local interest, through such events as their hugely popular Harry
Potter parties, excellent book signing events with both Irish and
international book authors such as Jung Chang, Gerry Adams and
Micheal O’ Muircheartaigh.
Guest speaker on the night, Richard Madeley of "Richard & Judy"
fame, was particularly impressed with Anne’s passion for books
and interaction with local schools and agreed with Anne’s primary
objective of encouraging young children to begin reading at a very
young age.
Defibrillator For Club Vitae at
The Quality Hotel Youghal
Club Vitae the Health & Fitness Club at the Quality Hotel Youghal
held a members fund raising night on Friday 29th February in
Lannigans Restaurant at The Quality Hotel Youghal. The evening
was a chance for members to get together and socialise and raise
funds to buy a defibrillator for the Club
Recently the staff at Club Vitae have been aware of some of the
tragic accidents that have happened around the country that could
have had a different outcome if defibrillators had been available.
With this in mind Jo Collins our Club Vitae Manager decided to
raise funds for a defibrillator for the Club.
A total of 1700 was raised between raffles, auctions and donations from members who were unable to attend. The night was a
huge success and there was enough money raised for the defibrillator and the cost of training for this apparatus.
Jo and her team would like to extend a huge thank you to all the
members of Club Vitae who attended on the night and also to the
members and staff who made donations for this very worthy event.

East Cork Junior ’A’ Football C/ship
Fr. O’ Neill’s 7-1 Youghal 0-6
Two goals within the first five minutes set up Fr. O’ Neill’s for a onesided victory over Youghal in the first round of the Ml. O’ Connor
sponsored East Cork Junior ’A’ Football championship in Killeagh.
Youghal, who were defeated by Bride Rovers in a preliminary round,
were under pressure from the word go as O’ Neill’s had too much fire
power in their forward line in the opening exchanges. However,
goals win games but a worrying feature of the game was that there
was no point scored from play in 66 minutes of play - O’ Neill’s only
point coming from a 30M free from the boot of Eoghan McCarthy
after 12 minutes.
Kieran Wall opened the scoring with a goal on the 4th minute and
Eoghan Mc added a second a minute later when he took a pass from
Shane Harrington. Shane Spillane raised Youghal’s first white flag on
the 10th minute when he pointed after Eoin Coleman played a short
pass to him from a 13M free. Eoghan Mc’s pointed free came two
minutes later but the other ’Eoin’, Eoin Coleman countered that point
with another pointed free on the 15th minute. Kieran Wall added his
second score of the game when he kicked a rebound into the Youghal
net to extend the O’ Neill’s score. John O’ Mahoney and Eoin
Coleman (free) reduced the O’ Neill’s lead with two points on the
24th and 26th minutes. Shane Harrington got his name on the score
sheet when he goaled on the 28th minute and Johnny Flav scored his
first goal when he took a good pass from the industrious Kieran Wall,
who had deftly sidestepped a Youghal challenge. John Flav finished
the first half with another goal on the short whistle to let the half time
score 6-1 to 0-4.
Kieran Wall bagged his hat trick on the 33rd minute when he left
Youghal goalie, Kevin Lonergan, in his wake as his shot hit the back
of the Youghal net for goal number seven. Mid way through this half
John Flavin received a leg injury and had to be carried off and he was
replaced by the ever dependable, Martin Lawton. Shane Spillane
pulled a point back for Youghal on the 36th minute and the ever
green Vince Murray had Youghal’s sixth point on the 47th minute.
This was the last score of the game and it was amazing that with so
much possession O’ Neill’s didn’t score for the remaining 27 minutes
or Youghal for the remaining 13 minutes. This was not a game for the
purist but from an O’ Neill’s perspective, a win is a win.

FR. O’NEILL’S 7-1 v YOUGHAL 0-6
Played in Killeagh the score doesn’t reflect the true path of this
game. O’Neills scored three soft goals in the first 10 minutes that
effectively ended this as a contest, but Y oughal regrouped in the
second half and made a real contest of it keeping O’Neills scoreless but the damage had already been done. Their were a lot of
heads hanging but the positive is it was 8 scores to 6 which shows
territorially and possession wise this was a close enough affair.

Youghal dominated throughout but for some complacency in the
second half which let the Gaels back into it. It was inevitable that
switches needed to be made as the selectors get to know their

JUVENILE CLUB
UNDER 14 FOOTBALL CHALLENGE 03/03/2008
YOUGHAL 4-1 v ARDMORE 2-7
A good outing for the ul4’s against our near neighbours from Co.
Waterford. Some very good football was played by both sides in
what was a very exciting game and both sides deserved to get
something from it.
YOUGHAL Ul4 3-2 V YOUGHAL Ul5
A warm up game for the U15’s ahead of the East Cork Final saw
them take on their young Club Mates in what proved to be an
excellent way to get the blood running for the Final three days
later
Ul5FOOTBALLEASTCORKFINAL
YOUGHAL 1-8 V KILLEAGH 1-2
The ftrst fmal of the Year played in Ballymacoda saw a large
crowd gather to witness a great game. Y oughal were fairly comfortable in the ftrst half playing against the breeze but conceded a
late goal to go in trailing 0-3 to 1-2. A serious injury to the impressive Ross Desmond who broke his wrist just on half time left
doubt in the mind of the Y oughal supporters as to whether we
could take this one home. But to their credit the Boys came out
for the second half deteqnined to win this one for Ross and with
the excellent Colin Sheehan kicking 1-3 in the second half and an
overhead score from Ryan Lane the outcome was never in doubt.
Killeagh were held scoreless in the second half as Youghal
defended doggedly from no. 1 to nO.15 and ran out winners by 18 to 1-2. Captain Christopher Cooney paid tribute to his fallen
comrade and dedicated the title to him.
Ul3 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
YOUGHAL 4-3 V FR. O’NEILLS 3-4
Fr. O’Neills must be getting fed up of the Youghal Jersey as once
again they were overcome by a narrow margin. Five points down
at the break Y oughal were upbeat about their prospects as they
played into the "scoring goal" for the second half. Y oughal went
4 points up with five minutes to go and to their credit O’Neills
threw everything at the Y oughal Boys and but for some excellent
defending by full back Ollie Dempsey and a Magniftcent display
of goalkeeping by Dylan Mason who will have a big future
between the sticks might not have held on.
Team: D. Mason, C. Finn, M. Flaherty, J. Power, R. O’Sullivan, C.
Savage, A. Ledingham, C. Keenaghan, A. O’Neill, T. Coleman, K.
