Gerry Adams Launches
Sandra McLellan's Campaign
Speaking at the launch of Sandra
McLellan's election campaign
Gerry Adams said that with the latest developments in the peace
process Sinn Féin has shown it can
and will deliver.
Gerry Adams said: "In the coming
weeks Sinn Féin and DUP ministers in the north will be sitting
down with Ministers in the new
government in the south taking
government decisions on the AllIreland Ministerial Council. This
is a hugely important development
which will fundamentally change
politics on this island."
"Sandra McLellan is one the
vibrant young female candidates
we are putting up in this election. I
look forward to the prospect of Cork East voters making her part
of a strong Sinn Féin team both north and south which can bring
a new a new energy and a new dynamic to Irish politics"
"Health is one of the issues I find comes up time and time at the
doorstep" said Sandra McLellan. "People are fed up to the teeth
of poor services and even lamer excuses. Health will be one of
Sinn Féin's priorities in the next Dáil and I would like to be there
to ensure that reform is delivered. We want to get rid of the two
tier health system and put in place a health service which is free
and provides a good service"
"A symptom of the malaise in the Health Service is the present
nurses' dispute. Nurses work in very difficult circumstances on the
frontline of our health services. Their job has been made even
more difficult due to the inadequacy of the health services as a
result of the government's pursuit of a two tier health service. It
is they who have to cope with a lack of resources, constant overcrowding on wards and delays at A&Es. I have no doubt that the
fact that the majority of the nurses are women plays a large part in
the outgoing government's attitude to this dispute.

Aura Youghal Leisure Centre and Barretstown Announce
New Partnership
Fun Day out to raise funds
AURA Sports and Leisure Management are delighted to announce
their partnership with Barretstown as the company's designated
charity of choice.
As part of the 'Barretstown Serious Fun Day' which is taking
place on May 12th the pay-as-you go Aura Youghal Leisure Centre
will be hosting a lot of fun activities to raise money. 'Serious Fun
Day' is all about raising funds for Barretstown and having fun in
the process.
These activities include a sponsored swim. This will take place
on Friday 11th May and Saturday 12th May and members of the
community will have the chance to swim the total distance from
the Aura Youghal Leisure Centre to the Aura Cobh Leisure Centre!
The total distance is approximately 33.5 kilometers which is 1,340
lengths of the pool.
Everybody is encouraged to participate in this fun activity on
Friday 11th from 3pm - 8pm and Saturday 12th from 2pm - 6pm.
All donations are welcome!
Barretsown is a specially designed camp, providing a programme of adventure, activities and fun - backed by the medical
world - which helps children with serious illness regain their confidence and self-esteem. Aura Sports and Leisure Management are
delighted to organise these events at their seven Aura centres that
the whole community can get involved in while raising much
needed funds for this special cause.
Aura centres offer a unique pay-as-you-go option and this
ensures that all members of the local community can enjoy the
state of the art facilities. A series of courses including slimmers
programmes and an extensive range of fitness classes are available
daily, all taught and monitored by the professional Aura staff. Aura
also provides Swimming Lessons for all ages (under 4 to adults)
and all levels of abilities.
The centre is expecting a huge turnout from the local community and is encouraging as many people as possible to participate
in the fun day out and fundraising activities. Barretstown bandanas
will be on sale throughout the centres. They will cost €2 and all
money will go to Barretstown.
Aura Youghal Leisure Centre is focused on providing opportunities for the whole family to enjoy. Its facilities are accessible to
all members of the family, both young and old, and a series of
exercise classes including aqua fit and fitness classes are available
daily.

Killeagh Man Wins

Sunday Fundraiser at Quality Hotel
Photos Michael Hussey
ON Saturday, 28th April, the Area 3 "Tall Tales" competition was
held at Vienna Woods Hotel in Glanmire. Area 3, which includes
all clubs in east Cork, came together with their respective club
members to contest this highly rated area final.
Youghal Toastmasters Club's representative and champion was
Dominic Tatten who hails from Killeagh. Dominic, a recent and
worthy representative and a very prolific toastmaster and member
of Youghal Toastmasters Club, took the stage by storm and won
this area competition.
Dominic's win is a great milestone for Youghal Toastmasters
Club. He takes his place among the other Youghal Toastmasters
who have made their mark at Area 3 level, Tommy Collins and
Chris Bailey.
Chris Bailey also represented Youghal Toastmasters Club in
the Division D, Speech and Evaluation contests at the Tower
Hotel, Waterford, as a test speaker for the Evaluation contest.
Youghal Toastmasters Club is proving itself as a club of winners when one considers that since its beginning in October 2003,
it has produced such a team of excellent public speakers. You too
can achieve and realise your potential as well as having a fun
night, by coming along to one of our meetings.
Next meeting is on Thursday 24th May at 8pm at The Walter
Raleigh Hotel.

Youghal Tidy Towns Committee
“No Election Posters Call”
AT last month's meeting of Youghal Tidy Towns Committee the
Committee Members agreed to write to all Election Candidates in
the forthcoming General Elections to request that they refrain
from erecting election posters in Youghal Town. The Committee
has noted that regrettably this request has not been acceded to by
any of the political parties as of today's date.
Ned Brennan, Committee Chairman, said that election posters,
despite the candidates’ best efforts, are fragile and will deteriorate
and cause litter in wet and windy weather.
He continued that with the start of the Litter League
Competition a few weeks ago it is imperative that the community
maximises its efforts to do our best to win this year's competition.
Youghal has been remarkably successful in the Litter League
Competition in the last few years, outright winners in two of the
last three years, 2004 and 2005.
“The absence of election posters would greatly assist the Tidy
Towns Committee's Campaign,” he commented. “The Tidy Towns
Committee is a voluntary group and totally depends on the good
will, support and co-operation of the complete community,” the
committee continued.
Today, Youghal Tidy Towns Committee again calls on Political
Parties to be responsible and remove their unsightly posters,
which detract from the beauty of our Town.

My Fair Lady
YOUGHAL Musical Society's production of My Fair Lady will
run from the 21st of May for seven nights in Bun Scoil (still fondly referred to as 'Pres'!) Tickets for this lavish show are now on
sale in Cree's Card Shop at €12 for adults and €7 for the under 12s.
My Fair Lady is directed by the highly respected Terri Byrne
who produces a very successful musical show every year in Cobh.
The Musical Director is Youghal's own very talented Tracey
Symon.
Everyone is familiar with My Fair Lady, made famous by Rex
Harrison and Audrey Hepburn. The musical numbers are all wonderfully nostalgic, and include 'I could have danced all night',
'Wouldn't it be loverly'. 'I'm getting married in the morning' and
'The street where you live'. Our reporter accepted an invitation to a
rehearsal with alacrity, intrigued to see how Youghal Musical
Society could possibly take on such a challenge. We don't need
Rex Harrison. Andy Jackson is the consummate Professor Higgins.
Not only does he bring a wealth of acting experience and a wonderful singing voice to the part, but he has the stature and authority to make this very demanding role his own. The part of Eliza is
being played on alternate nights by Ruth Hayes and Caroline
Fraher, already well known performers. They truly shine in this
very difficult role in which Eliza is transformed from a cockney
flower seller to 'a consort for a king.' They bring beauty, charm and
glorious singing voices to the show. If you have a favourite Eliza,
Cree's will be able to tell you on which night each will be performing.
The lovable Alfred Doolittle is played by Brendan McCarthy,
another seasoned performer with all the wit, humour and excellent
timing needed to carry off this comic part to perfection. We missed
seeing his dance routines, but we are reliably informed that they
will be talked about for many a long day! A newcomer to the
Youghal stage is Father Patrick Winkle who is playing the nervous,
patient and long-suffering Colonel Pickering. He is excellent in this
role and handles it with great delicacy and humour.
Youghal Musical Society encourages new talent and there are
several new faces in the show. Everyone who turned up for audition was warmly welcomed and a place found for them. This community spirit is to be applauded. The Committee, who work so hard
in the background, are deeply indebted to the local business and
professional communities for their continued support. Musicals
cost a great deal of money to produce and My Fair Lady, with its
lavish costumes and wonderful music, costs more than most.
Formed in 1993, Youghal Musical Society has had many hugely
successful shows, including Sound of Music, Oklahoma, The King
& I, Magic of the Musicals, Oliver, Annie….the list goes on. My
Fair Lady promises to be the best yet. It sparkles with wit and is
guaranteed to send the audience home singing.

YOUGHAL TOWN COUNCIL MAY MEETING
Meeting with Garda Superintendent, Flor Horan and
Sergeant, John Sharkey as requested by members.
Prior to the monthly meeting, Councilors met with local gardai to
discuss ongoing issues of law enforcement in Youghal. Councilors
were invited to put questions to the newly appointed
Superintendent. Cllr. Burke opened the session by raising several
concerns affecting the town. He began by asking if there will be a
garda reserve for Youghal. He coupled this with a query on the
strength of numbers in the current local force and remarked that
there is a 'perception of no cover at night' due to the closure of the
barracks after 10pm. He then cited a number of other issues, which
included, drug use, anti-social behaviour in Green Park, boy-racers and the possibility of monitoring jet-ski activity during the
summer months. The Superintendent responded to the queries in
turn. He said. "The competition is open for the Garda Reserve.
Applicants from Youghal can serve in their own town but will not
be assigned to their own estates. However, we have no applications as yet." On the matter of garda numbers operating at night,
he replied. "The numbers have gone up recently with more than
two working at night. Units at night have 4-5. There is also the
traffic core in Midleton."
On the drug problem he asserted. There is a drug squad in
Midleton that can advise and assist. We recently had a seizure of
9,000 ecstasy tablets in Youghal." The Superintendent added that
there has been a 'good few minor detections'. While he stated that
Youghal is 'typical' of other towns for it’s size, he had 'noticed' the
anti-social behaviour since his arrival . He said that Anti-Social
Behaviour Orders (ASBOs) are now in place and complaints made
by the public will be acted on. On the matter of jet-skis the
Superintendent admitted to being unfamiliar with offences in relation to their use but would investigate the problems. The boy racer
complaints brought no new response and frustration was evident
from both the Superintendent and members of the Council. He
remarked that it is a nationwide problem that brings complaints
from all quarters but that action can only be taken in the event of
a breach in the road traffic act. He said that, oftentimes, complaints
are not followed up by a statement. He added that a 'majority' of
boy racers are 'law abiding' but recognised the concerns of the
public by affirming 'more attention over the summer months',
adding that they (gardai) do breathalyse drivers.
Cllr. Casey informed the Superintendent that jet-ski users regularly flaunt the local bye-laws by breaking the speed limit of 5 knots
within the designated zones of the harbour. He asked if speed
radars could be used to detect offenders. The Superintendent said
he was 'unsure' if the radar would work over water and cited the
difficulty of converting knots into kilometres. Cllr. Casey replied
that this was a 'simple' procedure. The Superintendent was also
informed that the local Gardai are the enforcement agents of the
harbour bye-laws. The Superintendent said the gardai have 'no
equipment at the moment' but agreed to try the radar on a trial.
Cllr. Savage said that 'speeding is a big problem'. He said that
speeding is prevalent in residential areas and expressed his hope
that enforcement would happen in the event of the recommended
speed limit changes being implemented presently. This request
was received positively with an assurance to monitor speeding. It
was also suggested by the Garda that the Council consider ramps.
Cllr. Savage responded by stating that many residents 'do not want
ramps'. The Superintendent added that an 'unmarked van' would
also be used to detect speeding in residential areas. He said the
public would receive prior notification about its use through the
media to encourage them to heed the law.
Cllr. Savage then cited the recent trend of young people congregating in large numbers. He said it was a 'side-effect' of having one
large school as opposed to three separate social groups as before.
"You now have a mass of up to 100 kids coming together," he said.
With the recent meetings of large sections of the youths in Green
Park the Superintendent was quick to state the consequences for
young people involved in anti-social behaviour. "They (youths)
will get a caution if they are caught drinking. They will be referred
to the Junior Liaison Officer and put on the system straight away.
straight away. We will try to find where they get the alcohol. Older
youths or adults will buy it for them and we will give it attention,"
he said. Cllr. linehan-Foley urged a balanced view of the youth
when she stated. "Most kids aren't doing anything wrong. They are
not trouble makers, they're just hanging out. There is an amount of
drinking but not everyone is doing it," she said. The
Superintendent said the gardai 'fully accept' her point. However,
he also stated that one difference between Youghal and other
towns is the 'wanton damage' perpetrated in the area such as damage to property. Cllr. Linehan-Foley moved the discussion from
youth anti-social behaviour to the adult brand that is currently
afflicting a number of estates. The Superintendent urged resident
associations to make complaints. The Cllr. replied that 'people are
intimidated' and they are 'told to watch their backs if they make a
statement'. She asked if anonymous statements are admissible. She
was informed that information has to be disclosed in court, but
people can ring the Gardai anonymously. The Cllr. remarked that
it is 'sad' for decent people to be afraid of a 'small element'.
Cllr. Murray added that one of those 'element' is from private ownership. She said residents 'find themselves helpless'. "It is at the
stage where this individual would be regarded as the neighbour
from hell," she said. She also expressed concern that public knowledge of trouble areas would devalue houses there. The
Superintendent again urged residents to show a united front. The
Cllr. then asked if there would be a 'foot patrol' visible on the
streets. She was informed that there is an application for four more
Sergeants. "We will try to get ones that want to live in town. That
will give them a chance to get to know people," he added. Cllr.
Beecher asked if the station could be 'opened for the summer
months'. He cited the growth in the population, the knock-on
effects of anti-social behaviour and the incidents of people calling
to the station to find it closed. The Superintendent insisted that
prior to the closure at night the statistics showed that the station
received 'very few' calls. He asserted that having the station closed
at night meant an extra garda on the beat.
Cllr. Beecher then asked how many undercover officers are operating to fight drug crime in Youghal. He was informed that there
are one Sergeant and two officers based in Midleton that assist gardai in Youghal. He said Youghal 'has a number of serious criminals' that are being monitored. Cllr. Beecher then revisited the jetski problem and asked if the Gardai have an 'aqua-unit'. The
Superintendent replied that there is a sub-aqua unit in Dublin that
assists diving. Cllr. Hennessey reiterated the frustrations the public feels about boy-racers and stated that locals have told her that
when they ring the Gardai they don't go to the boy-racers. She also
asked whether it would work if the Gardai called to boy-racers
having obtained registration numbers. The Superintendent
explained that the car owners would only ask what offence they
have committed, or what speed they were going. The Cllr. suggested that the visit might give the younger drivers 'a fright'. The
Superintendent said they want to make public places as 'unattractive as possible' to boy-racers. On complaints not being followed
up he said the public should ring the Sergeant the next day and
inform him about it. "If a call is not answered I will follow it up,"
he promised.
Cllr. McLellan cited quad bikes on the beach as a danger to the
public. She also brought up anti-social behaviour stating she had
'calls from three estates' last week and that it is not 'all children'
causing problems. She then asked what drugs are being used in
Youghal. She was informed that the drugs of choice are Cannabis,
Ecstasy and Cocaine. When asked how much cocaine, he replied,
'small amounts'. Cllr. McLellan then asked if heroin is in use the
Superintendent said. "No, there has only been one detection of
heroin in the district so far." Cllr. Revins then asked if the local
force will be added to outside of the extra Sergeants and if the
interview room at the station has been updated to deal wiith drink
driving offences. The Superintendent said extra Gardai will be
drafted in for the summer months and that recording equipment
has been installed in the interview room. He concluded by saying
crime in Youghal is down by 27% in relation to last year's figures.
Youghal News.....May 17th 2007
Youghal Town Council May Meeting continued . . .
crime in Youghal is down by 27% in relation to last year's figures.
He declared burglaries are down by 50% but anti-social behaviour
is 'slightly up'. Sergeant Sharkey was invited to contribute to the
discussion by the Mayor. With most of the ground already covered
he made a brief statement. "Regarding anti-social behaviour, I
don't get a lot of calls. People have no problem ringing Councilors
but they won't talk to me. People will give some information the
next day but the ideal time to call is when it is happening," he said.
The discussion ended with the Superintendent expressing his
desire to work closely with the Council to try to make Youghal a
better place to live through guidance and advice, with no little
amount of enforcement when required.
Votes of Congratulations.
Cllr. Linehan-Foley wished to congratulate the Town Clerk on his
work in bringing the Walled Towns Conference to Youghal. "He
did work he didn't have to do and I hope it all goes well," she said.
Cllr. Murray congratulated the Youghal Vintage Club for their
ongoing work and wished them the best for their event on the 27th
of this month.
Cllr. Beecher declared Mr. Finbarr Hannon a 'genius' and asked
that the Council afford him a civic reception for his efforts in stage
productions over the last number of years and most recently with
'Showtime'. Cllr. Linehan-Foley suggested that all the theatre projects come together for such an appreciation.
Cllr. Revins congratulated his brother, David for his work with
Munster Rugby team as masseur and hopes to see him enjoy successful World Cup campaign with the national squad.
Town Foreman’s Report
Cllr. Burke requested that the diving board and hand rail be erected at the diving rocks. He raised the issue of an unfinished footpath at the corner of Windmill Hill/Cross Lane. He also asked for
a sign notifying the town walls to be erected at the junction of
Raheen Road and Cork Hill. He reminded the Council of a pot
hole on Nile Street and that works are required at Green Park
regarding the replacement of cap stones and seating. Cllr. LinehanFoley asked if walkers could bring their dogs into the French
Gardens. She said, at present, they cannot, despite being diligent
about picking up dog foul. The Town Clerk said dog owners are
diligent when there is an attendant present but less so when the
gardens are unattended. He said the situation is so bad that grass
cannot be cut there because discarded feces could 'get into the eyes
of workers causing blindness'.
Cllr. McLellan asked that 1 - 2 signs stating 'children at play' be
erected at the playschool on the 'bad bend at Cork Hill'. She said
locals who visit the quayside are asking for more benches. She
conveyed the concerns of residents in the strand area that a derelict
building on the old rectory road is being occupied by teenagers
with possible dire consequences. The Mayor said the owners 'are
aware' of the situation. Cllr. Murray requested a bollard for the
bottom of Windmill Hill to stop taxis from parking on the footpath.
"A taxi pulled up just as I was receiving a complaint about it," she
said. Cllr. Beecher said the information signs at Greencloyne and
Ballyvergan East need immediate replacement. He added that
while the new car park at Blackwater Heights is very welcome, he
bemoaned the decision to lay pebbles in the garden there. "That
was a bad idea," he said. He added that the jail steps is being badly
littered. He asserted a young couple with a family are willing to
have a CCTV camera fixed to their house to record illegal dumping. Cllr. Hennessey asked if a pot hole outside the residence of a
elderly lady at Kennealy's Court can be filled. She was informed
the court is a private residence. Cllr. Casey asked if maintenance
of the Grotto at Sarsfield Terrace had begun. The Town Clerk said
it has not.

YOUGHAL CYMS
Ken Doherty former World Snooker Champion makes a welcome
return to Youghal CYMS. This is Ken Doherty's 4th visit to the
town such is the popularity of the former World Snooker
Champion. Challenging the cream of the society's senior and junior players Ken as usual entertained the capacity crowd with his
world-class snooker skills on the green baize. This is the 6th consecutive year that the society has hosted exhibitions at its landmark premises in the centre of town with World Champions like
Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry enjoying the warm Youghal hospitality in the past. Ken said this was his last exhibition of the current season and he was really looking forward to playing in
Youghal as he has fond memories of the town. Youghal Town
Council accorded Ken a civic reception in 2002 when he first visited, Ken is one of Irelands leading sporting ambassadors and one
of the games top players. The society is again proud to host these
exhibitions due in no small part to the hard work of the committee. Our sincere thanks to Jim and Mary Browne and staff of The
Old Imperial Hotel and to Seamus and Richenda and staff of the
Quays Bar for hosting the reception, thanks to sponsors Tommy
Walsh, Cashman's Bookmakers and Noel Mackey from The
Central Star and to Kieran McCarthy of Web Media Ireland who
provided the fantastic PA system on the night and Sean Murphy for
his Trojan work and also Patrick and Dave on the door. Thanks
also to the local press, Eugene Crotty, CRY's sporting commentator; Youghal News for their extensive coverage. The society would
again like to thank all our sponsors and loyal supporters and look
forward to the new season. Fortes In Fide.

The Green Party are offering real solutions to
the lack of jobs in East Cork, says Iremonger
Snooker Champion Ken with President Mr. William Kelly, Mayor Sammy Revins
and Mr. Brendan Cooney, Hon. Vice President
Snooker Champion Ken with Geraldine Landers, Emma Sheridan and Richenda
Kelly
Green Party candidate for Cork East, Sarah Iremonger, said today:
"The lack of jobs in the East Cork constituency, from Youghal to
Cobh, and up to Fermoy and Mitchelstown, is a real threat to the
future prosperity of the region, and is a major issue on the
doorsteps in this election campaign. The Green Party are offering
real solutions to maintain the future prosperity of the region."
Ms Iremonger continued: "The renewable energy sector in Ireland
is only in its infancy, and is lagging badly behind our European
counterparts, in spite of our huge potential in this sector. In ten
years of Government in Germany, the German Green Party helped
create 170,000 jobs in the renewable energy sector there, and the
Irish Green Party in Government would help develop the renewable energy sector here, with a large number of jobs created. As
part of this, the Green Party proposes to make East Cork the centre for the biofuels industry in Ireland, with its abundant fertile
tillage land, its proximity to the only refinery in the country at
Whitegate, the availability of various industrial sites, such as the
former sugar factory at Mallow or the former IFI plant in Cobh.
Only the Green Party have the ability to understand the renewable
energy sector, and its potential to create jobs and prosperity into
the future."
Ms Iremonger concluded: "We should treat this not as waste, but
as a resource to be reused, and instead of exporting it, we should
be using it here to create jobs and wealth. With their central locations within Munster, towns such as Fermoy and Mitchelstown
should become major centres for the recycling industry in
Ireland."

Well-known Youghal man honoured

Lifeboat Service
Youghal Golf Club
Presentations
Harvey Dewan Memorial: Seamus Kearney Captain; Gareth Dewan, Sponsor;
John Murphy 1st prizewinner and John Walsh President
Tadgh Kelleher, LOM and the Youghal RNLI shore crew congratulating Albert
Muckley, DLA, who will receive the Gold Badge Award for 32 years dedicated
service to the RNLI. Albert will travel to the Barbican Centre London on May 17th
where HRH the Duke of Kent, the RNLI President, will present him with the award.
AT the Annual RNLI Presentation of Awards meeting at the
Barbican Centre, London on the 17th May, the H.R.H Duke of
Kent on behalf of the Lifeboat Institutions Council will present to
Mr. Albert Muckley of Youghal, Co Cork the Gold Badge in recognition for his long and devoted service to the RNLI.
Albert first became involved at an official level with the
Youghal Lifeboat Station in 1975 when he was appointed Deputy
Launching Authority, a position he holds to this day. Over the years
many changes in the Lifeboat Service have taken place. The
Offshore Liverpool Class lifeboat Grace Darling was replaced in
1984 by an Atlantic 21 Class inshore lifeboat and in 2002 a new
Atlantic 75 plus a brand new boathouse was built on the site of the
old station.
New paging systems mean that when Albert is alerted to a callout, the crew can be put on standby at the touch of a button, a far
cry from the firing of rockets to alert a crew.
A keen angler and sailor in his day, Albert achieved National
honours in the wayfarer class.
The lifeboat service is a community service in the best sense of
the word and the annual awards serve to honour these men and
women in our midst, who do the ordinary thing in such an extraordinary way. They will have faced joy and tragedy at different times
in the service of the RNLI, seeking only to comfort those in need.
Married to Anne they have two children Marie and Leo and are
proprietors of the well-known Muckley Jewellers in Youghal. Anne
is Treasurer of the fundraising Branch of Youghal RNLI. Albert’s
contribution to fundraising and in particular to flag days has been
remarkable over the years.
And so it is very timely and fitting that Albert and his co recipients take there place in the sun, where their good deeds are validated and due honour awarded.
Deputy Welcomes Youghal
Sewerage Scheme Award
DEPUTY Ned O’Keeffe TD has welcomed the announcement
recently by Minister Dick Roche TD that €14m has been
approved in respect of Youghal Sewerage Scheme. Deputy
O’Keeffe has confirmed that this scheme will involve the repair
and upsizing of existing sewers, together with the construction
of new pumping stations and rising mains to serve the town and
its environs. Minister Roche’s approval now clears the way for
Cork County Council to prepare contract documentation with a
view to seeking tenders at the earliest date possible, concluded
Deputy Ned O’Keeffe.

MOTOR INTO SUMMER 2007
9. Be sure to have some help with navigation unless you know
exactly where you're going, and plan your route in advance.
10. Don't scoff a large meal before setting off, as this can make
you drowsy. And it goes without saying - don't drink alcohol!
PREPARE THE ROUTE
11. Don't put pressure on yourself, allow lots more time than you
think you'll need. The last thing you want is for a minor delay to
cause a stressful and dangerous race against the clock.
12. If you are aware of any traffic blackspots along the way, it's
useful to have a back-up route prepared. There are plenty of online
route finding services to help and give you a realistic idea of your
arrival time.
13. Travel outside busy periods if possible. Sometimes you can
make better time if you can travel during the week or very early in
the morning.
14. The radio is handy for warning about hold-ups. National bulletins are sometimes useful but often an obstruction will have
cleared by the time it makes it onto the airwaves. An RDSequipped radio can be set to pick up traffic reports from local
radio, so learn how to turn it on by consulting your in-car entertainment manual.
15. Start your holiday early, stop off and visit some towns on the
way there and back with an overnight stop en-route. Who knows,
you might even find somewhere you want to return to next year.
18. Prepare games or amusements for children. I-spy is an old
favourite or spot different kinds of car ('Next one to see a Smart
gets a Smartie'). Use your imagination, remember arguing is part
of the game, but don't distract the driver. Hand-held computer
games are good (if they have headphones attached), but try card
games and books, too.
19. Travel sickness can be a problem. Symptoms can be eased by
keeping the car cool and well ventilated, driving steadily and
keeping the sufferer distracted. Sitting in the front helps sometimes. Avoid too much food and fizzy drink.
20. If you are taking a pet with you don't forget they have special
needs. Make sure they are comfortable, not too hot, sensibly
restrained and that they get an opportunity for a drink and to
'stretch their legs' along with the rest of the family.
TOP TIP
If your car overheats, steam will rise up from under the bonnet.
Pull in to the side and switch off the engine. Give the engine plenty of time to cool (at least 15 minutes) before touching it - otherwise you risk burns or scalds. Don't pour cold water on it - you
could crack the engine block.
PREPARE YOUR PASSENGERS
16. Talk about the journey before you set off. You know you're all
going to be in the car for a long time, so agree not to argue (or at
least agree to try not to argue) and keep a sense of humour.
17. Take music to listen to. Let everyone have their own choice of
music or radio station for an allotted time.

Top Tips for Summer Motoring
THOSE lazy, hazy days of spring and summer back when we were
children. Being herded into the car at first light, squabbling over
who got to sit on which side of the car, getting miles down the road
only to turn round to grab the forgotten picnic and then several
hours sat in queues of cars full of further fighting families.
Now of course it’s you behind the wheel and your kids screaming in the back seat. Here is our summer motoring guide to take
the heat out of holiday travel and to kick things off we have below
a plan for success:
PREPARE YOUR CAR
1. Check whether your car is due a service before you set off.
Ensure the car is properly serviced in line with the manufacturer's
recommendations. If possible, have it done a couple of weeks
before you're due to go, just in case they find a major fault that
needs fixing.
2. If a service isn't due, make sure you check your car over before
setting off. Pay close attention to the condition of hoses, make sure
the coolant level and mixture is correct and ensure that the belts
that drive the alternator and power steering are not loose or
cracked. A couple of euro for some summer coolant or a new rubber belt could save a fortune in breakdown fees. Many dealers
offer free or low-cost summer checks that take minutes to perform
and provide welcome reassurance that you won't splutter to a halt
halfway to the beach. Remember to check the spare tyre too.
3. Check tyres for pressure, tread (don't forget the spare) and for
splits or bulges. Refer to your handbook, too - it's likely that you'll
need to increase tyre pressures if you're carrying a full load.
4. Don't be caught out - carry spare bulbs and a selection of fuses.
It is extremely annoying being stranded for want of the tiny fuse
needed to keep the radiator fan or headlights working.
5. Fill up with petrol, check the oil level and make sure the screen
wash tank is full to cope with all the dust and dirt you'll encounter
on a long journey. You'll get through screen wash at a prodigious
rate in summer conditions, so it might be worth carrying a spare
bottle. Read instructions carefully to see whether it can be used
neat or needs to be diluted.
PREPARE THE DRIVER
6. Driving overnight? Be sure you've had sufficient rest. Working
all day and trying to drive all night is a recipe for disaster.
7. Travelling a long way? Make sure there's more than one driver.
Change at least every three hours, two during the night. Don't try
to be a hero and do it all yourself. Plan rest stops ion advance so
everyone can stretch their legs safely
8. Stop for refreshments and comfort breaks. Don't eat or drink at
the wheel, but sucking some sugary sweets can give a temporary
energy boost.

The team played poorly in the first half with hill and breeze.
Things looked bad at half-time when only 2 points in front.
However, a remarkable fight back in the second half saw the side
lead by 2 goals with only twelve minutes to go. Unfortunately, we
were reduced to 14 players and Iniscarra drew level, only for us to
lead again with a wonderful point by Brendan Coleman. Luck
deserted us as we conceded a goal and a point at the very end.

Youghal U16 Footballers Victorious
Youghal 2-6 Fr. O’Neills 1-6
Killeagh was the venue for the East Cork U16 A League Football
Final on Thursday May 10th. Youghal had qualified for the final
with good wins over Carrigtwohill, Glanmire, Erins Own and
Killeagh. They also had good wins over Dungarvan and
Abbeyside in challenge games.
A strong wind blew down the field and Youghal decided to play
with it. The Youghal boys dominated the first half and after some
erratic shooting they eventually got their opening score, a point,
after 10 minutes of play. At half time Youghal lead 2-4 to 0-2. The
scoreboard did not reflect their first half dominance and playing
into the strong wind in the second half would test their ambitions
to win this final.
However a very determined second half performance and a great
display from the Youghal defence left Youghal victorious at 2-6 to
Fr. O’Neills 1-6 at the final whistle.
Team captain Brendan Twomey was presented with the trophy
much to the delight of his team mates and supporters. This is a talented bunch of boys who train very well and are a pleasure to
work with. The following panel of boys deserve congratulations
for their great display on the night: Mark Thuroe, Anthony Mason
(vice-captain) Brendan Twomey (captain), David Ryan, Dylan
Power, Aaron Kenny, Paul O’Sullivan, Bleu Corbell (0-1), Conor
O’Sullivan (0-1), Paul Quill, James O’Mahony (0-1), Michéal
Cronin, Adrian Curtin (0-2), Shane O’Flynn (2-1), David Scanlon,
Victor Cahill, Stephen Cheasty, Kevin Coyne, Tiernan Brennan,
Aaron o’Keeffe, David Cashman, Declan Quinn, Aaron O’Connor
and Ryan Tobin.

Kinsalebeg/VEC Awards Night A ‘Clean Success’
National Alzheimers Day
at La Bella Roma
MEMBERS of the Kinsalebeg community received the Certificate
in the Primary Course in Food Hygiene from the Environmental
Health Officer's Association on Thursday 3rd May.
Kinsalebeg Community Hall, Piltown, situated in the rural hinterland of the Waterford/Cork border, was the venue for both the
course and the Awards Night. The Food Hygiene course ran as part
of a cookery course set up and organised by the Community
Education Facilitator of Co Waterford VEC, Ms Áine Whelan,
with assistance from Ms Joan Curtin from the Kinsalebeg community. The course was primarily aimed at the Hall's food catering
team to help them see and understand where problems could arise
in the preparation, handling and service of food.
The overall objective of the Primary Course in Food Hygiene
is to create an awareness and knowledge among food workers of
the reasons for the importance of good food hygiene practices.
With the introduction of new food hygiene legislation the need for
formal training of food workers in good hygiene practices has
been enshrined in law.
Under the direction of specially qualified trainer, Ms Mary
Fennell, the Kinsalebeg group studied the food hygiene law along
with a range of food hygiene topics. These included food contamination, food delivery and storage, food preparation, cooking and
serving, cleaning procedures and personal hygiene, pest control
procedures and hazard analysis critical control points.
Fourteen participants successfully completed the Food
Hygiene course and could not wait to receive their certifcates. To
that end, the group rallied round to host the awards night, drawing
from the skills, talents and qualities of its members and those of
their families and friends to organise a night to remember. Top
class skills in leadership, teamworking, public relations; natural
talents in Irish cuisine, music, song and dance, along with qualities of genuine warmth and hospitality were all in evidence.
Supporting National Alzheimer's Day were standing: Maria Barry, Margaret Carey,
Ann Rae and Marjorie MacDonald. Sitting: Mary Hayes and Loreen Sweeney.

MEXICO A WONDERFUL
EXPERIENCE
Until the arrival of Ceolta Si in Mexico City for the Ollinkan
International World Cultures Festival here was a huge lack of
knowledge amongst the Mexicans of Ireland and Irish traditional
music. A few had heard of Riverdance but many had not heard the
music. During Daithi Kearney's talk on the history of Irish traditional music, the greatest reaction came in relation to the diversity
within Irish traditional music and the amazement at the popularity
of Irish traditional music in Ireland.
Between the formal concerts Ceolta Si members took delight in
playing sessions in the Lobby Bar of the Hotel each night, much to
the amazement and enjoyment of the staff and many of the other
visiting international musicians and performers. Some took great
interest and musicians from the Basque Country of Spain joined in
for one session. It was at these sessions that Don Brockie came into
his own, one night he even thought he was Ardmore's answer to
Micheal Flatly.
The concert venues (all outdoors) provided a wonderful atmosphere where people could sit or stand in comfort, protected from
the threat of rain by a simple tarpaulin covering. The first two concerts were at Explanada Delegacional Centro De Tlalpan, which
was the more intimate of the two venues that we performed in. It
was in a park near the museum in the centre of Tlalpan where
approximately 800 people attended each night. The Saturday night
concert was at Bosque De Tlalpan a much larger venue, more of a
festival setting with food and drink stalls. The organisers told us
before going on stage that a crowd of over 8000 people were waiting for us. When the music started the huge crowd enthusiastically
welcomed us and with a little encouragement they clapped and
even danced along. Once they started dancing there was no stopping them. According to Ciara Lynch "it was very emotional and so
uplifting, as a musician I never before felt such a wonderful experience. To see so many thousands of people delight in what we
played for them, I was so proud of our Irish music and culture."
The diversity of music at the Ollinkan International World Cultures
Festival was to be admired in itself. It provided the audience with
a very eclectic nights entertainment but it also provided the performers with the opportunity to experience the sounds of other folk
cultures. Other countries performing during the week at the festival were Iran, Israel, Cameroon, Hungary, China, American Indian,
Mexican groups, Spain, France, Netherlands, El Salvador, Mali,
Argentina and many more.
A key part of the performances by many groups was musical fusion
and attempts to overplay to the audience. As a group of Irish traditional musicians Ceolta Si presented a night of typical jigs, reels
and hornpipes, etc with little pandering to the temptation of modern technology and rhythms. The cheers from in excess of 8000
people at the final concert proved that Irish traditional music, in its
purest form, played on a solo fiddle or whistle, can reach the hearts
of any audience.
Ceolta Si members have not only received an invitation to return to
Mexico but they are invited to Spain and Budapest, and also to
Portugal in April 08. The groups talents and spectular skills
attracted large media coverage over the week, including intrerviews and coverage by international airways and telivision
crews. The Ceolta Si concert will be broadcast on Mexican telivision during the month of June.
The group stayed at Hotel Fiesta Inn and they were treated like
royalty during their stay in Mexico. A special word of thanks to
Emma Leonard Attaché to the Irish Ambassador and her boyfriend
Mike who ensured that we got a real taste of Mexico. They guided
us to all the important tourist spots. We also had a lovely evening
with the Irish Ambassador Dermot Branagan when we were treated to a typical Mexican meal of tortillas, guacomola, Arracerra (cut
of beef), veal, soft cheeses and we even sampled the delicacy of
'ant eggs' soaked in butter. Ceolta Si have now returned fully energised to help Comhaltas celebrate 25 years of promoting Irish
music and culture here in Youghal. Watch this space for details of
a hectic programme of planned summer events.

CIE CHERNOBYL CHILDRENS PROJECT
On Friday 20th April a group of Bus Eireann drivers from Cork,
Waterford and Tralee Depots along with other personnel left
Capwell Bus Garage in Cork for their annual Humanitarian Aid
Convoy to Grosovo Orphanage in Belarus. Once again this year
they brought a Bus Eireann coach with them so that the children
of the orphanage will be given day tours for the duration of the
drivers stay in Belarus.
Aid which brought this year included blankets and bed linen, towelling, clothing, toys, as well as a fully equipped outdoor playground for the orphanage.
The Youghal Chernobyl Group has strong links with Grosovo
Orphanage as it is mainly from this Orphanage that children come
to Youghal and West Waterford twice yearly for rest and recuperation. John Houlihan who is one of the drivers on the convoy is a
member of the Youghal Group and takes two children over on holidays every year.
A considerable amount of hard work has been put in by this group
over the last number of months in organising this convoy. They
would like to thank everyone concerned for helping make this
convoy a success. Pictured above is the Bus Eireann Coach outside the Walter Raleigh Hotel on its way to Belarus.

Under 10
On Saturday 5th May the under10 hurlers played Bishopstown in
the semi final of the Decky Guickan League. On the day
Bishopstown took the honours. The lads can now look forward to
the East Cork league after a good run in this league.
Under12
Our under 12 footballers took on Castlelyons in the first round of
the championship. This game was played in Youghal, and proved
to be very exciting game. Both sides gave everything, and after
putting in a strong performance we came away with a win, on a
score line of 4-13 to 2-9, to progress to the semi-final against
Killeagh. Best for Youghal were Ollie Dempsey, Tomas Coleman,
Danny Walsh, Jake Power and Aidan O'Neill.
On Tuesday the 8th May we played Killeagh in the Semi final of
the under12 football championship. After an outstanding game of
football Killeagh took the honours by 2pts to advance to the final.
The 1st half was played at very fast pace with both sides playing
very good football. Killeagh started the 2nd half the stronger team
with Dylan Mason keeping Youghal in the game. But after the
opening 10mins we got back into the game with Ronan O'Sullivan
at centerback and midfield pairing of Danny Walsh & Colin
Keenaghan leading the way. Then with 5mins to go Aidan O'Neill
scored a great individual goal to bring us to within 1pt of Killeagh,
but time ran out and killeagh advanced to the final. Best for
youghal were Dylan Mason, Ronan O'Sullivan, Colin Keenaghan,
& Conor Finn.
Under14
Our under14 hurlers played Midleton in Copperalley on
Wednesday last and recorded their first win in the league. Best for
youghal were Andrew Curtin, Colin Sheehan, Lee McCarthy,
Ryan Lane & David Cashman.
Under16
Our under16 footballers took on Fr O'Neill's in the final of the
East Cork League on 10th May in Killeagh. Youghal were in control of the 1st half with James O'Mahony & Shane O'Flynn leading the way. Ten minutes into the 2nd half James O'Mahony went
off injured and Fr O'Neill's came more into the game. The Youghal
defence lead by Aaron Kenny and Dylan Power kept Fr O'Neill's
at bay to record a great win. Best for Youghal were James
O'Mahony, Shane O'Flynn, Aaron Kenny, Dylan Power & Paul
O'Sullivan.

CAT COMES TO THE DOGS!
By Christy Parker
Many a man has declared that women have sent him to the dogs.
Now, in Youghal, there is a woman to greet him when he gets
there. Kathleen Lennon became Bord na gCon's only female racing manager when she assumed the post at the local greyhound
track last month. She is also, at 25, one of Ireland's youngest managers.
Oh, and she's a Cat.
The youngest of three children from Threecastle, Kilkenny,
Kathleen was, so to speak, to the kennels born. "My father Denis
has always kept dogs. I love them and as a child I remember as a
child bringing them swimming in the river with my brother and
sister".
Out of the water, the Lennons' dogs won the Guinness trophy in
Cork as well as other trophies, "but we've had our share of bad
ones too!", says Kathleen. Denis, wife Pauline, a retired schoolteacher Kathleen's brother Tom still cater for over 60 dogs,
through breeding, rearing, racing and retired animals, while her
accountant sister Aileen retains a strong interest.
During her secondary school days at Loreto, Kathleen helped
develop photos in the judge's box at Kilkenny track where, on finishing school, she then took an administrative post. At 22 however, itchy young feet saw her leave for a year in Australia with
friends. She spent much of her exile as a traffic controller on a
road & tunnel project in Sydney. "I had a brilliant time", she
enthuses, a-twirling blonde locks while retrieving warm memories.
Back in Kilkenny in 2005, she successfully answered a recruitment advertisement for assistant manager at Cork's glamorous
Curaheen Park. Resisting all temptations to direct traffic under the
Jack Lynch tunnel, she prevailed and learned alongside former
Youghal manager and legend, Brian Collins -himself not much
more than a sapling. Then came Youghal.
Settling into her top tier appointment, Kathleen describes the seaside venue as "a bit like Kilkenny in that its very relaxed and
friendly and more of a grassroots track than Cork. Everyone is
very helpful". Following the doldrums years of the 1980's and
early '90's the efforts of Youghal's owners & patrons have placed
the track on a sound financial footing. Kathleen intends "to continue to seek more sponsorship and also to encourage more benefit nights" as part of maintaining good economics.
Ably assisted by her equally pedigreed administrator Finola
Power, she is relishing and wise to her challenges. "The racing
side of things is in good fettle but like every rural track, we need
to attract non-doggy people too to generate revenue and sell the
sport. I believe Bord na gCon are drawing up plans to upgrade
amenities here and I very much look forward to that".
Meanwhile an avid hurling fan (what would you expect?!)
Kathleen has just established accommodation in Youghal. By way
of integrating and learning our unique and wonderful ways, she is
tempted to re-awaken a dormant passion for camogie. Welcome to
Co. Cork Kathleen. Can we help you with your hurling?…

Fine Gael Commits to
Children with Autism –
STANTON
East Cork Fine Gael TD, David Stanton, is taking a clear, and
costed, commitment to children with autism. FG financial
framework provides substantial increase in funding for autism
education “Fine Gael is committed to meeting the needs of
children with an intellectual or physical disability. Our recently published General Election Manifesto put forward a number
of key actions that Fine Gael will prioritise in Government after
the election. “With regard to autism, our manifesto explicitly
states that where a period of intensive education – like Applied
Behaviour Analysis (ABA) – is professionally recommended for
children with autism we will support this approach.
“For too long children with autism have been shamefully overlooked by Fianna Fáil and the Progressive Democrats. Special
autism units are working for some children with autism, but for
others a more intensive approach is needed. However, this
Government refuses to fully acknowledge the benefits of ABA
education, leaving many children with autism without the education that fits for them.
“Fine Gael believes that, in education, one size does not fit all. In
Government we will recognise more ABA schools for funding,
giving children with autism who need this type of education the
assistance they are currently waiting for. “This is no empty preelection promise. Fine Gael has budgeted for increased financial
support for the education of children with autism, and our financial framework shows Fine Gael will spend an additional €45 million on autism education over the lifetime of the Government.
“Fine Gael is putting its money where its mouth is – our commitment to children with special educational needs means we have
made specific financial commitments to support children with
autism.”
