T he
biggest historical impact in Tolox took place in the decade between 1560
and 1570. From the Conquest of Granada by the Catholic Monarchs, the religious bigotry
was united with the greed of the conquerors. The te nse coexistence between descendants
of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada and old Christians who came from different places of
the Spanish geography generated a war to the death. This conflict ended up with the expulsion of Moorish people.
On 6 December, the village of Tolox remembers these facts with a rooted tradition since the sixteenth century. This festivity is known as the day of “Las Mozas”.
“Las Mozas. Fuego y Amor en Tolox”, a historical recreation what has been created to promote this festivity, helps visitors to travel in time in order to relive the tumultuous period in which ancestors of Tolox lived.
During the long weekend of The Constitution, costum es of Christian and Moorish people,
traditional meals and popular crafts will be able to be seen together with a spectacular
performance in which the local history come to life.
The neighbors are organising the event with great enthusiasm and dedication,
looking for information and documents what help them to be as faithful as possible to the
past of Tolox.
What can visitors find in Tolox from 16th century?
T
he visitors can find a setting where they will go back in time: they will travel
to Tolox from 1569. Christian and Islamic taverns will offer them a variety of different
“tapas”. These meals will be inspired by delicious food from 16th century. In the Christian bakery, people will be able to taste “bollitos preñados”, an exquisite snack.
Also, visitors will be able to drink infusions or coffee to get the heat in the cold
December. Traditional sweets and fritters will be cooked for delighting the senses. Chocolate has just arrived from New World and visitors will be the first to drink it. Foreigners
will be able to taste the local wine of Tolox in the wine cellar of the Church. A lot of
stands of Christmas craft products will be created and sold by the neighbors.
Visitors will enjoy these activities and learn more about history of Tolox in the
long weekend of The Constitution.

“Llegada de los cristianos”.
Con Caracolas y Cencerros, Los vecinos y vecinas de todas las edades recorrerán las calles
de Tolox, expulsando con sus sonidos a los Moriscos del pueblo. Todo el mundo está
invitado, la única condición es llevar su caracola o cencerro, haciendo el mayor ruido
posible.
