Managing Director's
message
Dear fellow Bousteadians,
Indeed time passes fast and we have already finished the
first half of this year. I am pleased to inform that albeit
trying circumstances in the global economy and the
pressures facing the Malaysian economy, the Boustead
Group has succeeded in delivering profitability despite
these conditions.
mencatatkan keuntungan sebelum cukai sebanyak RM86
juta, iaitu satu peningkatan berbanding RM20 juta pada
suku tahun sebelumnya. Walaupun keputusan adalah
lebih rendah berbanding tahun sebelumnya, adalah
sangat mustahak agar kita kekal menguntungkan, seperti
sedia ada.
In March this year, the Curve was named the ‘Best
Commercial Building’ by the Petaling Jaya City Council for
its open-air concept and emphasis on al-fresco dining.
At a time like this, our strong corporate brand presence as
a reliable and stable Government Linked Company with
strategic investments in key segments of the Malaysian
economy bodes well for us. As a brand, we have grown
on the premise that in order to succeed, there must be a
clear vision. This culture has kept the Group resilient and
has seen us through many challenges.
I am happy to note that the strength of our brand has been
acknowledged and earlier this year, we walked away with
the BrandLaureate Award for Best Conglomerate category
which sealed our position as one of Malaysia’s largest
corporate brands.
Moving forward, we must not view this economic downturn
as a barrier to sustain earnings but as a good opportunity
to evaluate our strategies and undergo positive changes to
make us more resilient in the long term.

tempuhi.
For the first quarter of this financial year, we registered a
profit before tax of RM86 million which is an improvement
over the preceding quarter’s profit of RM20 million.
Though our results were lower than the previous year’s
corresponding period, it is imperative that we remain
profitable, of which we are.

seharusnya menganggap kegawatan ekonomi kini
As we move into the second half of our financial year, I
urge all Bousteadians to continue to work hard, be prudent
and I caution all of you never to be complacent. We have
to excel to greater heights with efficient teamwork and
commitment in the face of the challenges that lie ahead.
Ketika kita menempuhi pertengahan tahun kewangan,
saya menyeru agar semua staf Boustead sentiasa bekerja
anda semua agar jangan sekali berpuas hati. Kita perlu
cemerlang untuk mencapai kejayaan yang lebih besar
melalui kerja berpasukan dan komitmen yang cekap
dalam menghadapi cabaran-cabaran yang mendatang.
Thank you.
Terima kasih.

Govt improves
policy related to
oil palm schemes
Director's
Profile
KANOWIT: The government has improved the policy involving oil
palm schemes on native customary rights (NCR) land here with the
presentation of cash incentives to scheme participants.
Mr Koo Hock Fee
Rural Development Assistant Minister Datuk Gramong Juna said
yesterday that one year after the commencement of the project, the
participants would be paid an incentive of RM150 per hectare.
“The incentive payment will be made annually until the company
makes profit to enable it to pay the actual dividend amount. This is
done for the benefit of the participants as soon as the project started,”
he said.
He was speaking to reporters during the presentation of cash incentive
of Teamplete Pelita Sdn Bhd, Boustead Pelita dividend payment and
Land Title Confirmation Document at Kanowit District Office. Kanowit
MP Aaron Ago Dagang and Kanowit District Officer Bobbie Yamoh
were among those who attended the function.
Gramong, who is Machan assemblyman, said the cash incentive
payment was made because the payment of dividend at times
took a long time due to certain reasons. He said besides the
incentive payment, the participants would also be given the land title
confirmation document as a warranty that their land was not taken
by any party.
The document, among others, contains details such as the name of
owner, land location and size. “But this is not a land permit and also
not issued by the Land and Survey Department. This document is only
recognised by Pelita,” he said, adding that the document also served
as a record for the owner other than to solve the land border issue
among the scheme participants.
On NCR land development in Kanowit, Gramong said he was
positive about the future of all the oil palm projects there despite the
challenges and problems faced. “I’m positive about all the oil palm
projects here. They are for the benefit of the people,” he stressed,
adding that several companies had shown their interest to invest.
The assistant minister added that the oil palm plantation project
in Kanowit, the pioneer for similar projects in the state, would be
expanded to other areas after the first phase started in 1996 ended.
Meanwhile, cash incentive amounting to RM70,180.50 was paid to
174 participants from 22 longhouses by Teamplete Pelita Plantation
Sdn Bhd. Teamplete Pelita plantation which was designated as Block
A involves Ranan, Lukut and Penyulau areas and has an estimated
total area of 17,300 ha. Of that total, 460 ha have been planted with
oil palm.
For Boustead Pelita plantation, oil palm has been planted on 12,639
ha out of the overall total of 14,000 ha. The project involves Block B
and D. The dividend payment totalling about RM1.7 million involved
1,701 participants from 126 longhouses in Bawan, Tuah, Jih, Pedai
and Mapai area.

anaknya. Namun pada tanggal 7 Oktober 2008 yang lalu,
pihak IJN telah melakukan pembedahan menutup lubang
pada jantung anaknya bagi mengelakkan implikasi yang
lebih buruk.
Bantuan kewangan yang diterima daripada kakitangan
Boustead yang prihatin sedikit sebanyak dapat meringankan
bebanan Halim untuk menanggung kos pembedahan yang
agak tinggi itu.

Jokes of the day
Wife
enyedari masalah kewangan yang dihadapi
oleh En Abdul Halim Mohamad dari Boustead
Shipping Agencies Sdn Bhd (cawangan Kuantan)
untuk menanggung kos pembedahan jantung berlubang
(Ventricular Septal Defect–VSD) anaknya, Kelab Sukan
Boustead (KSB) telah membuat kutipan derma bagi
membantunya. Kos pembedahan berjumlah RM18,000
Sebanyak
RM6,250 telah berjaya dikumpulkan. Wang tersebut telah
diserahkan sendiri kepada beliau oleh Pengarah Urusan
Boustead Shipping, En Bernard Khit di wad Institut Jantung
Negara (IJN). Saudara Halim kelihatan gembira bercampur
terharu dengan bantuan yang dihulurkan sehingga
menitiskan air mata.

A popular motivational speaker was
entertaining his audience. He said:
“The best years of my life were
spent in the arms of a woman who
wasn’t my wife!” The audience was in
silence and shock. The speaker added:
“And that woman was my mother!”
Laughter and applause.
warga Boustead kerana sudi menghulurkan bantuan
kewangan bagi meringankan bebanan kos pembedahan
jantung berlubang anak kami Syamel Hazeem.
Sekian. Terima kasih daripada kami
sekeluarga.
A week later, a top manager trained
by the motivational speaker tried to
crack this very effective joke at home.
He was a bit foggy after a drink.
He said loudly to his wife who was
preparing dinner, “The greatest years
of my life were spent in the arms of a
woman who was not my wife!” The
wife went “ah!” with shock and rage.
Standing there for 20 seconds trying
to recall the second half of the joke,
the manager finally blurted out “...
and I can’t remember who she was!”
By the time the manager regained his
consciousness, he was on a hospital
bed nursing burns from boiling water.
Paternal payback
On the day I received my learner’s
permit, my father agreed to take me
out for a driving lesson. With a big
grin, he hopped in behind the driver’s
seat. “Why aren’t you sitting up front
on the passenger’s side?” I asked.
“Kirsten, I’ve been waiting for this
ever since you were a little girl,” dad
replied. “Now it’s my turn to sit back
here and kick the seat.”
Confident vs.
confidential
A young boy asks his Dad, “What is
the difference between confident and
confidential?” Dad says, “You are my
son, I’m confident about that. Your
friend over there, is also my son, that’s
confidential!”
Looking good
Even at age 88, my mother was vain
about her looks. At a party, an old
friend exclaimed, “Edith, you haven’t
changed in 20 years.”
“Oh,” said Mom, horrified. “I hope I
didn’t look like this 20 years ago.”
Papa bear
My husband’s cousin married a former
Marine who now works for United
Parcel Service. They bought their fouryear-old son two stuffed bears - one
in a UPS uniform and the other in
Marine garb. When the boy seemed
confused, his father brought out a
picture of himself in full Marine dress.
“See, Connor?” he explained, pointing
to the photo and then to the bear.
“That’s Daddy.”
Connor’s eyes went from one to the
other, and then he asked in a puzzled
voice, “You used to be a bear?”
