RECOMMENDED PACKING INSTALLATION
Packing a pump correctly cannot be stressed enough. Many packing failures are due to incorrect installation of
packing. The following steps have been formulated to ensure effective installation of the packing.
1. Remove all the old packing from the stuffing box. Clean both the box and the shaft thoroughly and examine them
for wear or scoring. Note the location of the lantern ring if there is one.
2. Use the correct cross section of packing. To determine the correct size use the following formula:
Stuffing Box Diameter – Shaft Diameter = Cross Section ÷ 2 The proper size of packing to use
3. To cut the packing into proper lengths do not determine the length of the packing by winding the coil into the box.
Instead please the coil around a tube having the same OD as the shaft. Hold the packing firmly, do not stretch it,
cut the first ring and try it out to see if it properly fills the space and make sure there is no gap where the ring end
meets. Cut the additional rings using the first as a standard. Rings can be butt cut or diagonally cut. If the rings
are diagonally cut use a mitre board to that each successive ring can be cut at the correct angle. If the packing is
soft and tends to fray apply a small piece of Teflon tape where the cut is made. If the tape alters the ring joint OD
remove the tape. It is very important that the rings to be cut to the correct size, otherwise service life will be
reduced.
4. When installing the rings make sure to install one ring at a time and that they are free of dirt and other debris. If
desired, lubricate the shaft and the inside of the stuffing box. Stagger each successive ring joint at 90° degrees.
Seat rings firmly in place using a tamping tool. When enough rings have been seated that the follower can reach
them the tamping can be supplemented using a follower. Individual tamping ensures proper seating of all rings
and can avoid erratic packing performance. (Note: PTFE filament and soft graphite yarn packing should be
snuggled up very gently then tightened gradually after the pump is on stream.)
5. After installing the rings, make up bolts finger tight. Do not jam packing into place by excessive gland loading.
Start the pump and take up bolts until leakage is decreased to a tolerable minimum. Excessive leakage during
the first house of operation will result in a better packing job over a long time period. Adjustments should be
made by tightening the nuts flat one at a time. Stopping leakage entirely at the point will cause the packing to
burn up.
6. When specified or possible a lantern ring should be used to lubricate the shaft and packing by supplying the
water, oil, grease or liquid to the stuffing box. It is important that this ring be in line with the exterior lubrication
fittings.
Replace the packing when leakage can no longer be controlled by further take-up on the follower gland.
On the majority of pumps the first five rings do the majority of the sealing but the remainders of
the rings are needed to fill the space inside the stuffing box. The advantages of fewer rings in a
stuffing box are less rod wear and the stuffing boxes are normally simpler and they take less
material. Rod wear is not only the problem. With high temperatures, high pressures, corrosive
and abrasive materials more rings may be the only solution for some services. In these cases
the bottom ring contacting the fluid will have the most wear from these sever service
conditions.
PACKING VALVES CORRECTLY
1. Carefully perform steps 1-4. Generally rings used on valves and extension joints are diagonally or skive cut. As
for cutting rings for pumps, once again test the first ring on the stem after carefully cutting.
2. Bring the follower down on the packing to the point where heavy resistance to wrenching is felt. During this time,
turn the valve stem back and forth to determine the ease of turning. Do not torque down to the point where the
stem won’t turn.
3. After the valve has been on line for a day or two, even if there is no detection of leakage, the follower should be
tightened slightly. If leaking is occurring, that means the follower must be tightened.

STYLE #50/50 PACKING©
Description
A combination of 50% DuPont Teflon-impregnated and
treated Kevlar Aramid yarn and 50% fiberglass. These are
twisted together to form individual strands, creating a
continuous interaction between the two fibrous elements, the
strands are then cross-lock braided. The finished braid is
PTFE-impregnated and a silicon oil starter lubricant is then
applied.
Characteristics
The intimate “all-points” combination of the fiberglass and
Kevlar yarns permits the fiberglass to conduct heat away from
the Kevlar throughout the packing mass, thereby building in
increased dimensional stability and constant sealing
effectiveness. The added fiberglass and substantial PTFE
permeation increases chemical resistance. This is a denser,

CENTRIFUGAL PUMP PACKING
Remove Old Packing:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Loosen the Gland Adjusting Bolt Assembly and swing out to the side of the stuffing box.
Remove both halves of the Gland Pack Assembly.
Using a packing hook, remove all packing and the lantern ring from the stuffing box.
Flush the stuffing box with fresh water.
Install New Packing:
1. Coat the rings with a light coating of oil or grease.
2. Twist the woven packing ring and slip it over the shaft. Push into the stuffing box with the split on the bottom and
push it to the back of the stuffing box with a blunt rod.
3. Repeat with three more packing rings.
4. Snap both halves of the lantern ring on the shaft. Orient the split up and down and push into the stuffing box.
5. Take the last two packing rings and slip over the shaft.
6. Re-install both halves of the Gland Packing Assembly and the Gland Adjusting Bolt Assembly. Tighten the nuts
down finger tight only. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN! This will greatly reduce the life of your packing and shaft.
7. Grease liberally through the grease zerk with a water pump grease.
8. Start the pump and allow it to run approximately 15 minutes. Re-adjust the tension on the Gland Adjusting Bolt
Assembly to allow between 15 and 20 drops per minute to leak from the stuffing box. This leakage will keep the
packing cool and will increase the life of the packing and the shaft.
9. Re-grease the stuffing box once every 24 hours running time. This is subject to change depending upon your
operating conditions.
KING – TYPE PACKING
When installing the rubber lip rings, the lip end should be towards the bottom of the stuffing box on the first three
rings. Next, add the lantern ring and then the final two rubber lip rings placing the lip end opposite to the bottom
rings. The braided packing ring goes at the top of the stuffing box.

ADJUSTABLE PLUNGER PACKING
Adjustable plunger packing requires some type of manual adjustment, as the name
stipulates, in order to work satisfactorily. Gland arrangement compresses the packing and
affects a seal on the plunger and the inside of the stuffing box. Adjustment is critical due to
the possible build up of frictional heat caused by over adjustment or excess leakage from
insufficient gland adjustment.
Adjustable plunger packing should be tightened snuggly before putting pressure on the
pump. Some pumps require flooding of the fluid end before pressuring up and if this is not
done the pumps will usually over-heat. After pressuring up, the gland should be adjusted to
seal off the “V” type packing.
Braided rings type packing should be adjusted to allow a slight leakage of fluid. If the ring
type is sealed off completely the packing will over-heat.
Adjustable packing is made up of either “V” type packing which can include pressure rings
and a header ring, pressure rings, a header ring, wiper ring and o’rings, or pressure rings
with a top and bottom adaptor given the application and style of pump. Adjustable packing
can also be made up of braided packing with either pre-formed rings or cut bulk packing.
Pre-formed ring sets can also have Teflon spacers to allow for greater pressure. Various
types of braided packing can be used depending on the application of the service.
ADJUSTABLE BRAIDED PLUNGER PACKING
Adjustable braided plunger packing is made in all types of braided packing materials (see
braided section in this book) dependant on the service of the pump and materials pumping
through it. All sizes to fit any plunger pump are available from 1/4" up to 6” plungers. These
sets can be made with or without Teflon spacers and with any number of spacers requested.

PRESSURE RINGS & HEADER RINGS
Pressure rings and Header rings come in a variety of sizes and materials. For general service a
Nitrile Duck packing is used. Sets can be made in a variety of ways to fit the given application
or the style of the pump.
SF Style
SSF Style
Standard SF or single stack pressure
rings are used in a wide range of pressures
media, and temperatures.
SSF or double stack pressure rings have a
heavier cross section ring for more
demanding mechanical applications.
Recommended for use in large diameter
applications, and where excessive loads and
pressures are present. They resist rollover and
distortion, therefore improving packing life.
HEADER RINGS
Header rings wiper the O.D. of the shaft or plunger. Used primarily where slurries and fluids
containing large particles are being pumped. Keeps fluid being pumped from working its way
into the seal ring area and causing premature failure. They can also act as a spring to create a
non-adjustable packing set which adds greater life to the packing service.

NON-ADJUSTABLE PLUNGER PACKING
Non-adjustable plunger packing is a molded nylon
and fabric segmental packing which is an
adaptation of compression rod packing. It also can
be a spring loaded Vee type packing. The benefits
of using non-adjustable packing are that it does not
require constant attention in loosening or tightening
a gland to maintain an effective seal. The molded
seal rings have sufficient interference to affect the
initial seal. The operating pressure helps maintain
the seal after start up.
Non-adjustable packing should be tightened as
much as possible with the pump running under
pressure. The gland wrench furnished with the
pump can be used without fear of crushing the
packing. The gland should be kept tight at all times
to ensure satisfactory packing life.
