October 2008 On behalf of the faculty and staff at Northridge High
“Welcome to our new home”
October 2008
On behalf of the faculty and staff at Northridge
High School I want to take the opportunity to say
“Welcome to our new home”. As you know by now, we have
occupied phase I of our new high school facility and are
running at full speed. I have said to many groups recently
how inspiring it is to work in this new facility. The
completion of this facility is a tangible example of the
results that can be achieved when a group of people plan
and persist towards a big goal. I offer a big thank you
to the many people who played a role in making our new
facility a reality.
High attendance at our August registration was a clear
indication that all stakeholders in the Northridge
Community were eager to begin school this year. I
appreciate the fact that so many volunteers were able to
work those days and the time that families took to come
and preview the school with their students. Our transition
has gone well. Teachers and students have quickly become
accustomed to their new spaces. Each day represents a
step closer to a healthy and positive routine in the school.
The next big community event in conjunction with our
new school will be a community open house on Sunday,
October 12th, 2008. All are invited to the dedication
ceremony and tour that afternoon.
As always, thanks
for all the support we
receive. Please do not
hesitate to call with
questions or concerns.
We will do our best
to assist you.

Senior Conferences 2008-09
Each year members of the senior class has the opportunity to meet individually with their guidance counselor in
what is called a “Senior Conference”. Every senior student meets with his/her counselor for nearly 45 minutes.
Several important issues are discussed during this time. First, graduation and endorsement requirements are
reviewed. Secondly, discussion on options for the future is shared. Ultimately, when college is the next step, a lot
of time is spent looking into various colleges and universities and the degrees which they offer. Finally, a student
is given information concerning the filing of the FAFSA (Free Application For Student Aid) form and the
appropriate steps to follow in order to pursue possible scholarships. Students choosing not to further their
education at this time can dialogue concerning future employment options, job markets and common employment
trends. Each student will receive information about Indiana colleges and universities, both public and private.
They will also receive publications relevant to life after high school, a list of helpful websites, and a Northridge
Financial Aid Directory which lists numerous scholarships. Parents are strongly encouraged to talk with their
senior student about this meeting and the information given to them. Senior conferences are very rewarding to
students and counselors alike. It is a time to celebrate the coming graduation and look toward to the future.

Northridge Chosen as 1 of 1000
Northridge High School has been chosen as 1 of the 1000 schools in the US and Canada to be granted a
chapter of the O Ambassadors. This organization is affiliated with Oprah Winfrey’s
Angel Network and the Free the Children organization.
The main goal of all these organizations is to eliminate
extreme poverty by 2015. Northridge has been assigned
to concentrate on East Asia (China, Korea, Japan, and
Mongolia), but they will also learn and assist in projects
locally and within the US. O Ambassadors focuses on four
Millennium Goals: poverty, education, health, and
sustainable development. It will be the goal of the NHS O Ambassadors to raise funds toward these goals
in order to provide clean water, health care, and education for children in the East Asia area. If you have
organizations/groups that would be interested in learning more about the O
Ambassadors or their work, please contact Carolyn Lamble or Ellen Augustine at the high school. Members
will be glad to provide information and make a presentation.
Lilies of the Field to Be Presented
The 2008 Northridge H.S. fall drama is entitled Lilies of
the Field, a production made famous by Sidney Poitier in
the film by the same name. The plot focuses on a
wayfaring stranger who travels the country, stopping here
and there to work or enough money to keep him going.
When he encounters a farm full of nuns, he has no idea
what lies ahead. Mother
Maria Marthe is a devout
sister who believes God
has sent this man to help
them succeed against all odds.
Homer, on the other hand,
swears he is a free man and can come and go as he
pleases. But somehow his mind is always swayed in favor
of the sisters. This wonderful and spiritually uplifting
production will be presented Friday and Saturday,
November 21st and 22nd in the Northridge Middle School
Auditorium. Ticket information will be available at a later
date. This is a good production for church youth groups
to attend as it deals with the questions of faith, love,
charity, and humility.
National Honor Society Induction… Soon
National Honor Society will induct its
new members on Monday, October 13th.
Students who are chosen must first have
a GPA of 3.6 or higher. Then they must
complete an application indicating their
involvement in co-curricular activities,
leadership, and community service. These
applications are then screened by a faculty
committee and scored on a scale to
determine which
students will be honored
with membership.
Students who have
applied should be notified
by October 3 as to their
status. Induction will be
held in the Middle School
Auditorium at 7:00 pm. All family
members and community members are
invited to attend.
