Lost Bible
Albert Douglas was
serving in the British army
during World War 2 and had
been posted to northern
Africa when the Germans captured him.
Putting him on a boat and sailing across the
Mediterranean, Albert was sent to a prisoner
of war camp in southern Italy where he and his
fellow prisoners were sent out each day on work
assignments. Throughout the entire time Albert
carried his Bible, a pocket New Testament that
contained a picture of him and his new bride as
well as a note that gave his home address and
a request to return the book should it ever be
lost.
During one of the daily work assignments
Albert and a friend decided to escape and in
doing so he left behind a few personal effects
including his Bible. One of Albert’s fellow
prisoners, George Boanas, remained as a POW
until the end of the war and he then tried to
return the Bible in 1945 but the house at the
address in the Bible had been bulldozed.
Albert and George eventually passed away,
however George’s daughter knew that her
father wanted the Bible returned and so a
few months ago Margaret Boanas returned the
Bible to Patrick Douglas – Albert’s son. After
travelling through north African battlefields,
Italian POW camps and finally to a social club
in Hampshire, southern England, the Bible was
finally returned after more than 70 years. Both
Margaret and Patrick enjoyed the emotional
reunion brought about by a common connection
that linked their families – a Bible.
Today the Bible is the world’s best selling
book with an estimated five – six billion copies
having been sold. The second most published
book is: Quotations from Chairman Mao Zedong,
a mere 900 million.
So today it can still connect families and
also keep a family connected. The opportunity
to read the timeless passages found between its
covers and to study the remarkable life of Jesus
Christ truly is transforming.

The VALUE for Week 5 of Term 2 will be :
SELF-DISCIPLINE
Self-discipline is training and control of oneself and one’s conduct,
usually for personal improvement.
“By constant self-discipline and self-control you can develop greatness of character.”
Grenville Kleiser
It’s worth a thought.
Mark B Vodell
Principal
“Happiness is dependent on self-discipline. We are the biggest obstacles to our own
happiness. It is much easier to do battle with society and with others than to fight our
own nature.” Dennis Prager
“For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields
the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”


SPIRITUAL EMPHASIS
WEEK
There should be something coming from
our students for this.
NAPLAN - MAY 12 -14
Next week on Tuesday, Wednesday
and Thursday, Years 3, 5, 7, and 9
students will participate in the National
Assessment Program - Literacy and
Numeracy (NAPLAN). The real purpose of
NAPLAN is for the data from this program
to assist our school and staff to understand
how we can work to improve and develop
our future learning and teaching programs.
NAPLAN is only a one-point-in-time
assessment and therefore only one piece
of data that we add to the many pieces of
data we need to inform our direction for
enhancing students’ achievement. We ask
therefore that parents are positive with their
children during next week in regard to their
NAPLAN assessment, encouraging them to
do their best and helping them to regard
these tasks as just another form of the
regular assessments they take part in during
their day-to-day learning.
TEA

MOTHER’S DAY HIGH
“It was an honour and a privilege to
be invited to the annual Year 4 Mothers
Day High Tea on Monday. Special guests,
including the mothers of Yr 4 students and
residents from the Taylors Hill Retirement
Village, were treated to tables laden with
an impressive selection of tasty delights.
The students were magnificent hosts
and included poetry and singing in their
repertoire of performances. A representative
from the retirement village concluded this
event by thanking the students and teachers
for their hospitality and remarked on their
outstanding levels of manners and courtesy.
Congratulations to our Yr 4 teachers, Miss
Pratt, Ms Taylor and Mr Lawty, along with
their team of helpers, for conducting such
a successful event which has now become
part of the Seniors Connect initiative.” Mr
Farquharson
MATHS FUN NIGHTS FOR
PARENTS AND STUDENTS
On Tuesday night the Year 4, 5 and
6 parents and students met to have fun
playing Maths games, and to discover how
we teach Maths as well as how parents can
most effectively support their children in
this learning area.
“An enthusiastic group of parents and
students braved the cold and wet to spend
the evening stretching their mathematical
brains by engaging in a wide variety
of challenges and problem solving, in
addition to methods and examples of how
mathematics is taught in the 21st century.”
Mr Farquharson
We have three more Maths Fun Nights
planned over the next three weeks catering
for various year levels. These Maths Fun
Nights will now be held in the Year 5 and 6
building at 6:30 pm on the following dates:
Year 1 – Wednesday 13th May
Years 2 and 3 – Wednesday 20th May
Foundation – Tuesday 26th May
Your child should have brought or
soon will be bringing a letter home about
these events closer to the date relevant to
your child’s class.
Please note the change of venue,
there will be signage to assist you if you are
unsure where the Year 5 and 6 Building is.
WET DAY PICK UP
PROCEDURE
Parents, please note that we have
changed our wet day pick up procedure
from previous years. As our student
numbers have grown we find that it is no
longer feasible to open the gates early and
allow parents to collect their child from
their classroom. We end up with too many
parents in the school grounds, and this
causes congestion at the entrance, making
it difficult to get other students through.
It also creates confusion as to where all
students are, and this creates difficulties for
teachers to ensure sufficient duty of care.
Please note the following procedure
for wet day pick up.
The gates will NOT open early. They
will open at 3:20pm.
Parents are NOT to enter the school
grounds to get their children from class
UNLESS they have gone to the office and
signed them out early as per our regular
process.
We suggest parents stay in their car
if it is raining and drive through the pick
up bay. If they have parked outside the
school grounds or in the car park and wish
to walk to collect their child, again we
suggest waiting in your car until the gates
have opened at 3:20 pm to do so. We also
need parents to stand back from the gate
entrance so that we can ferry children to
cars and waiting parents as needed.
When it is raining students wait to be
collected in the following places.
PRIMARY PICK UP: Foundation
students will wait in the classroom closest
to the entrance gates (Foundation SJ). All
other classes will line up under the shelter
between the Foundation classrooms.
Teachers will ask which child you are
collecting and will bring them to you or
your car.
FAMILY PICK UP: Students will wait
under the shelter outside the library.
Teachers will ask which child you are
collecting and will bring them to you or
your car.
BEFORE SCHOOL
REMINDER
We would like to acknowledge and
thank the parents who wait with their
children at the front of our primary school
gates until the duty teacher opens them at
8:20 am each morning. However, we have
noticed an increased number of students
being dropped at the front of the office
and then walking in to the playground via
the library and canteen pathway. Please
remember that there are no teachers on
duty until 8:20am each day, therefore
students are not to enter the playground
until the gates are opened by the duty
teacher at this time. If you need to drop
your child off at school before this time,
please sign them in at OSHC or wait with
them at the front of the school.
SCHOOL PHOTOS
Please note that School Photos will
be on May 28. ALL students are required
to wear their Full Winter Uniform. If your
child normally wears their sports uniform,
or if they are a House Captain for Sport,
they will need to bring their sports uniform
in their school bag to get changed into.
POKEMON CARDS
Students should not be bringing Pokemon
cards to school. There are several reasons
for this. We have in the past experienced
problems as the cards encourage “trading”
which sometimes result in fights and
accusations of stealing. We also encourage
students to be active at recess and lunch time.
Pokemon does not fit nicely with our school
ethos.
EARRINGS – STUDS ONLY
TO BE WORN
Just a reminder that only stud earrings
are to be worn at school, as per the uniform
policy. Loop or dangly earrings are not
permitted. This is not only a uniform
requirement, it is also a safety issue as there
is the risk of them getting caught while
children are playing and tearing the ear
lobe. The studs are to be small, up to 4mm
in diameter.
SCIENCE DAY
Next Friday, 15th May, our
Primary classes will be having lots of
fun experimenting and developing their
scientific skills. Mrs Mackay has organised
lots of fun experiments for everyone. We
need your help in supplying some materials
for this. Please send in to school:
* Empty and clean 2 litre clear plastic
bottles and
* Plastic bread clips
to another successful outcome, whether
that be just an opportunity to enjoy using
learned skills in nature, or returning with
the trophy.

Rogaining
Challenge
We have accepted
an invitation to join Adventist Schools
Victoria (ASV) in the annual Rogaining
Challenge. Last year (with the smallest
group of students) Gilson College won
the trophy, much to the dismay of other
larger groups. Awards to be gained include
winning school, girls group and boys group.
Rogaining is much like orienteering
but collecting as many checkpoints as
possible within a set time limit. This is
a bush challenge relying on map-reading
skills as primary navigation and a compass
as a tool to assist. There are 6 teams of
3 students each and staff will be roaming
in the field to supervise. We look forward

OSHCafe Program
Hello to all our families and students
Welcoming Fred JNR the Frog
The children have been learning about animal care and the environment. They
were lucky enough to have a visit from a frog who they have kept as a pet. They
learnt about habitats, diets and creatures comforts necessary to ensure the
survival of the frog. The children were highly involved in making the decisions
on the aquarium set up including making a mural and deciding what habitat the
frog would like most. They look for him every day and enjoy finding food and
watching him adapt to his new home.
