and differences. We also must not forget that NAPLAN was conducted in May - just over 3
months ago - and students can make huge progress in that time.
If you wish to discuss any aspect of your child’s report don’t hesitate to speak to the
relevant teacher.
I was so proud of our students who performed Snugglepot and Cuddlepie last week at the
Goodwood Institute! Each one performed like a professional and looked and sounded like
they were made for the stage! I’m sure we’ll see more than one in the future with their
name in lights. Penny Baker needs a medal for her organisation, timeless energy, passion
and steadfast support of the students. The hours she has spent preparing, rehearsing,
Festival of Music Perform. directing and producing have been countless and the results were seen in an excellent

The Book Week parade was a great success as you will see from the photographs in this newsletter. The theme of
Australia - Story, Country was reflected in costumes such as Ned Kelly, a swagman, Tom Cruze, Grandma Poss and
an early settler. Congratulations to all the worthy winners on the day.
We celebrated SSO Week last week - “School Services Officers - The Heart of all Schools” was the theme in which
SSOs were recognised for the crucial work they do in our school community.
There are very few students in our school who haven’t been supported by one of our SSOs at some point. A huge
thank you to Franca Davies, Pat Velaitis, Narelle Taylor, Marie Leeder, Kate Alley, Linda Sullivan, Rachael Temby, Robyn Goddard,
Christine Conway and Sandy Newbold who all go above and beyond their job description.
Lastly, we are considering the installation of solar panels and, on behalf of the Finance Advisory Committee, I’d like to ask if
there’s a parent in our school community who could provide advice about our school’s potential capability and what the
requirements would be. If you can assist in this area please contact me via Sandy in the front office.
Deputy Principal’s News
Children’s University - Graduation is approaching!
The Graduation Ceremony for Black Forest Primary School graduates of the Children’s University will be held at 6.00pm, on
Tuesday 8 November. The ceremony will conclude at about 7.30pm, with a barbeque and music until 8.30pm. Please ensure your
child submits their passport for a count of hours to the front office as soon as possible. If they are on track to graduate, then they
will be sent a formal invitation shortly. On the 19th October, there will be a briefing for all graduating students, held at the school
by Children’s University representatives, to outline the process for the graduation ceremony. Stay tuned!
Please note that Softball, Orienteering, Soccer and Cricket are all now validated school sports for Children’s University hours.
Other school activities include Tech Cadets, Year 3-5 Choir and Family Maker Workshops. If there is another school activity you
would like to be considered, encourage the coordinator of that activity to get a “Record of Validation” form from Joel Catchlove.
Createx - Maths and Science Beyond the Classroom
On Friday 18 November, Black Forest Primary School will be holding its third annual Createx event.
Createx is a showcase of student creativity that builds connections between classroom learning, student passions and the
application of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) skills in the community. Through student-run
displays and workshops, practical STEAM experiences hosted by science and technology organisations and independent makers,
Createx celebrates ingenuity and problem-solving.
In 2016, the theme for Createx is “Maths (and Science) beyond the classroom”. Students from Black Forest will be encouraged to
present practical displays and workshops that articulate the mathematical thinking and problem-solving present in their personal
passions and interests, while organisations from outside the school are invited to participate by sharing their expertise and
highlight the connections between student learning and the world outside school.
This year, the school is also offering a range of mathematics-themed challenges and experiences, including mass collective
cardboard construction, the Cubbytown Maths Challenge, maths trails, chess tournaments and more!
Student applications to present can be completed online at https://goo.gl/forms/0rhlZCTwJUxNiYGH2.
Applications close on Friday 23 September (Week 9, Term 3).
For safety reasons, no food or drink related workshops will be accepted.
Family Maker Workshop - Exploring programming and robotics
Our Term 3 Family Maker Workshop is fast approaching. On Thursday 15 September, from 3.30-4.30, students and family
members are invited to explore basic computer programming and robotics. Held in the school library/I-Centre This is a great
opportunity to have an introduction to some of the key elements of the Digital Technologies curriculum that all students are now
participating in.
All students must be accompanied by an adult. Please RSVP to [email protected] to book your place. Family
Maker Workshops are a validated Children’s University activity, so bring your passports!

Room 17 News
This has been a most exciting term in Room 17. We have enjoyed
immersing ourselves in our research topic relating to the Rio Olympic
Games and have had fun creating a wonderful visual presentation of
features from the Olympics. We are currently going to embark on a
learning unit revolving around Indigenous Australians and participate in
a native food trail along the Botanic Gardens.
We celebrated Book week last week and extended an invitation to our
Grandparents and Special Friends to come along to school and share
stories and read favourite tales with us. Children arrived in pyjamas and
robes armed with teddies and favourite books in preparation to snuggle
in and enjoy a Read In!
Grandparents and Friends then joined in and shared a morning tea so
generously prepared by our class parents and when it was time, were
escorted to the Hall in readiness for our combined assembly
presentation. Our school hall was filled to the brim with our special
friends and grandparents who watched with pride as each class
presented an ode just for them. All classes thoroughly enjoyed the
experience and would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who
participated.
Room 17 children then shared their feelings about the morning and
here are some remarks they’d like to share.
…….”I liked my grandparents coming along because it felt nice to read to
them”. Eliza.
………”.I really liked my grandma coming because she looked at my work
and said I have lovely writing and that I’m very clever at maths”. Oliver
…….”My grandma told me how much she loved me and how proud of
me she was”. Matilda
…….”She made me feel special because she came”. Thom
What a beautiful reminder of how it really does take a village to raise a
child. Thank you again for taking the time to pop along and make the
experience so warm and wonderful for your grandchildren.

Thank you to staff, students, parents and grandparents for helping us to hold a very successful Book Week.
On Friday of Week 4 we had Splash Theatre visit to present their performance of ‘The Book Show 2016’
which was enjoyed by the R-2 children.
On Wednesday of Week 5 the Year 1-2 section held a very successful and enjoyable morning for both the
grandparents and the children in Years 1 -2 with many of the grandparents expressing their enjoyment and
appreciation of the event.
Thursday of Week 5 saw us holding our Book Week Dress-Up Parade. There were so many great, creative
costumes in all of the year levels but, unfortunately, we can’t give prizes to everyone. The prize winners
were chosen by our GRIP team of Year 6-7 students and the prizes went to Isabelle E - R13, Ben P – R15,
Violet W – R1, Kole L – R 2, Mollie O-Y – Rm 11, Jack T – R17, George D – R21, Tayla W – R21, Millie A – R23,
Ajax W-S – R22, Bella K – R22, Lachlan A – R22, Brooke H – R8, Oliver H – R5, Anastasia A – R6 and Boh W –
R5. We thank all of the students who participated and a big well done to all of you!
On Friday students participated in activity sessions with their buddy classes and a lot of fun was had there.
We still have a belated part of Book Week to come in Week 8 when we will have the pleasure of welcoming
Craig Smith, a well-known Australian Illustrator who is coming to Adelaide especially to hold sessions for our
children in years 3 – 5. We look forward to hearing from Craig and having the children participate in some
hands-on activities with him. We particularly look forward to hearing about Craig’s most recent experience
as a first time author, as well as illustrator, of his new book ‘Remarkably Rexy’.

Canteen News
Thank you so much for all your sushi orders. Over 150 were eaten on the day. Yum.
Our next sushi date is for Monday 26th September.

Matilda from Room 12 is this fortnight’s winner. Well done Matilda. You have a $1 voucher to use at the canteen. If
you don’t reach the canteen with your 10c containers find a tub in the school ground to put it into. A dishwasher for
the canteen is our target.
Term 4 will bring with it a new menu. Please advise us if you want to see any items incorporated into this menu. Any
suggestions are welcome.
