D
ear Western Nation,
It is with great pleasure that this year I can say we asked you to
Western Up, and you did.
With renewed goals and purpose comes new challenges. Western has
accomplished many goals this past year and continues to strive to improve
our unique and remarkable institution of higher education.
We have witnessed many firsts. The first Running of the Red received
recognition by the BBC as one of their top photographs of the day. Our
recognition is climbing from the likes of US News & World Report, we are
increasing our enrollment and developing degrees that produce real
opportunities for our graduates.
Another first, as described at the back of this report, is letting all of us
take home our very own piece of the “W.” This year the President’s Club
level donors ($1,000 and higher) can have their own piece of the “W” to
remind us every day about this special place in Gunnison.
And while not a first, we as a Foundation readily accept the challenges to
step up and deliver on our mission: “To provide financial leadership and
support of the Western State Colorado University vision while offering an
ever-improving and remarkable learning environment.”
We applaud you for this past year’s support and cheer you on in your
efforts to join us in the ongoing pursuit to lead, nurture and grow Western.
Let’s keep the momentum, and Western Up!
Gratefully,
Art Harter (‘78)

President, Western State Colorado Universit y
When I accepted the position of President at Western
State Colorado University, I knew that many of
our supporters were worried about our institution, as our
enrollment has trended primarily downward over the last
couple of decades. But thanks to a tireless faculty and
administration working on an expedited schedule, our entire
campus, Board of Trustees, and the Western State Foundation
are now aligned behind a new strategic plan that will lift our
University in size, status and quality. As I listened to Governor
Hickenlooper address our graduates in May, I sensed a growing
energy, a reawakening perhaps – and indeed, as the year
unfolded, it became clear that 2014 was a launching pad for
Western, and that our finest days still lie ahead.
4
In 2014, Western was one of the very few Colorado schools
to increase its year over year enrollment. Our graduation rate
was not only up this year, it is now higher than our peer group.
Our retention rate was not only up, it is now higher than our
peer group. We now have the most diverse class in our history.
We added two new graduate programs this year, an MA in
Creative Writing and a Master in Environmental Management.
We built the new Mountaineer Field House – a state-of-the-art
recreation and athletic facility with climbing walls, weight
rooms, workout rooms, a unique high altitude performance
lab, and the highest collegiate track in America. And all of this
is provided to students at a cost that is dramatically lower
than most of the four-year public institutions in Colorado – our
tuition is actually third lowest in the State. This is a big part of
why our students graduate with a debt load that is consistently
the lowest or near-lowest of these schools.
Our supporters have sensed the momentum of 2014 as well,
and our donor base has been re-awakened. Paul Rady is a
1978 graduate who came to Western as a struggling student
with a 2.3 GPA out of high school. He is now Chairman and
CEO of Antero Resources and just donated an additional $1.5
million to our Petroleum Geology Program. Sean Markey is a
1993 graduate who wasn’t happy driving trucks for a living and
hoped that his education here might allow him a new career
opportunity. It did. He is now a renowned neurosurgeon in the
Denver metro area. Dr. Markey generously donated $300,000
to Western this year. Steve Borick, a 1975 graduate who has
already funded our new business building which bears his
name, stepped up even further this year with yet another gift.
All of these supporters and many more recognize that Western
is an incredibly rare and special place. Our uniqueness stems
not only from our breathtaking natural beauty in the heart of the
Rockies, but from our unparalleled student experience guided
by some of the best faculty anywhere – some 87% of whom
have the highest degrees possible in their fields.
Since our inception more than a century ago, we have relied
almost exclusively on word-of-mouth for promoting Western.
But starting with 2014, it’s time to take the gloves off. We hired
John Kawauchi as our new Vice President of Marketing. He will
lead our outreach and communications teams as they build
new capabilities for telling the Western story. We have one of
the most compelling stories in higher education, and it’s time
to let the rest of the world know.
2014 represents a sort of rebirth for Western – and we are
already seeing the signposts of progress toward some of our
goals. We now have the right plan. We have the right people.
And we have the right spirit and conviction. I look forward to
joining you in our continued efforts in the coming year.
Sincerely,
Greg Salsbury

Executive Director, Western State Foundation
D
ear Friends,
As I reflect on 2014, I’m reminded of a quote that’s especially
appropriate to describe the efforts of Western Nation and how so
many of us approach life.
The quote—and I’m paraphrasing—goes something like “It is better to
struggle aiming high than to succeed aiming low; so high that even falling
short will still provide an echo of glory.”
All things big and small here at Western demonstrate that we take the path
less travelled, challenge convention, push our fellow human beings to be
better, expect more and give even greater.
This past year, I saw it in the joy of a student donning a red morph suit to
welcome USA Pro Challenge Cyclists; the astonishment in Barry Clifford’s
(‘69) discovery of the Santa Maria; the rise of Western in the US News
& World Report college rankings; the over-achievements of our wrestling
program in the Better Than Good Graphic Awards competition; the pride we
all felt when the BBC called out our Running of the Red as a top 10 Picture
of the Day; and the outpouring of gifts from Western alumni and friends
totaling $4.3 million!
The list of examples—big and small—goes on and on, providing so many
inspiring moments that help define our amazing institution.
We thank all of you for contributing in so many ways to this amazing institution. For supporting
students who would not be here if not for your assistance. And for setting the example that
instills the ambition in us all to never settle.
To all members of Western Nation that Western Up, thank you for allowing us to aim high.
And helping us experience our own echo of glory.
Warmly,
Thomas F. Burggraf, Jr.
Executive Director, Western State Foundation

Despite an uptick in enrollment recently, Western remains significantly behind its historical levels and
current potential. Meanwhile, competing institutions have spent heavily on outreach, while state funding
for higher education had dropped dramatically.

Western WElcomes Dr. Greg Salsbury
All of those factors—and more—have driven the need for and helped shape a new multi-faceted proposal
to lift the Western brand and significantly increase awareness and enrollment.
Western Up! For Dr. Greg Salsbury
T
he Board of Trustees of Western State Colorado
University has selected Dr. Gregory Salsbury to be the
school’s 14th president.
Salsbury brings 37 years of professional experience, including
executive management of a multi-billion dollar business,
teaching engagements at eight institutions of higher learning,
nearly two-dozen publications, several master’s degrees and
a PhD in Organizational Communication from the University of
Southern California.
“While Dr. Salsbury has an impressive past and an effective
command of the present, our appointment of him to lead this
great institution was made for his vision and enthusiasm about
the future of Western State Colorado University,” says Todd
Wheeler, Chairman of Western’s Board of Trustees. “Dr. Salsbury
demonstrates a passion for leading the institution toward a
unified vision of success, which is balanced throughout the
enterprise, and a steadfast commitment to improving student
outcomes, while holding the institution accountable to our
values: quality, achievement, innovation, fiscal responsibility
and growth.”
hile Western has experienced unprecedented success in the last several years, one area ripe
for improvement is awareness, especially among Colorado high school students. In fact,
research shows only 36 percent of those students are even aware of Western.
“Western is a remarkable institution, with equally remarkable
people behind her,” Salsbury says. “The deep level of commitment of the multiple stakeholders – the Foundation, Board of
Trustees, faculty, staff, administration, alumni and community –
was evident in the extraordinarily thorough due-diligence
process. I am both honored and thrilled to be joining the team
and look forward to contributing.”
Salsbury has worked for the Jackson National Life Insurance
Company since 1997. He has functioned as Jackson National
Life’s Executive Vice President of Distribution and Head of
Sales for Banks and Wirehouses. Earlier in his career Salsbury
was an instructor at several institutions, including: University
of Southern California, California State University, Fullerton,
University of California Los Angeles, Santa Barbara City College,
and St. Mary’s College in Moraga. Salsbury holds a PhD in
Organizational Communication from the University of Southern
California, a Master of Arts in Communication Management
from the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism,
a Master of Arts in Communication from the University of Illinois,
and a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech Communication
and Psychology from Southern Illinois University.
Major aspects of the advancement
effort include:
•Development of core branding messages.
•Creation of a robust arsenal of communi-
cation tools—not the least of which would
be a compelling video presentation.
•A robust, targeted email and direct mail
campaign.
•A comprehensive advertising effort aimed
at prospective students, their families
and gatekeepers.
•Events to engage alumni, high school
counselors and campus visitors.
•Elite scholarships aimed at attracting
academic “starts,” both in-state and
out-of-state.
It’s a comprehensive, multi-faceted advancement plan that
will require significant support. Luckily, the Western State
Foundation has made sure that support is already underway
with a commitment of $1.5 million to the University.
Dr. Sean Markey (’93), Foundation Board Member, has provided
a lead gift of $300,000. Gerry Shear (’92), Vice President of
the Foundation Board, has committed $75,000 to the effort.
“Individual giving is important to our University but when we
all come together to collectively support a strategic initiative
we are showing the strength of the Western family and our
commitment to a strong future!” says Gerry.
“Like any important effort, this won’t be easy,” said Maxine
Pierce (’74), a Western State Foundation Board of Directors
member who was instrumental in inspiring fellow Foundation
Board members to join her efforts in the campaign. “But given
increasing competition and decreasing state funding,” she
said, “it’s critical to Western’s continued success.”
Maxine, and the rest of the Foundation Board, encourage all
those who support Western to help support this effort to make
Western even better.

W
estern State Colorado University graduate Paul Rady has donated his second
gift of more than $1 million to Western’s
Petroleum Geology program, bringing Mr. Rady’s
total donations to $2.5 million. Mr. Rady, Chairman,
CEO and Co-Founder of Denver-based energy
company Antero Resources, graduated from Western
in 1978 with a degree in Geology and has had a long
and successful career in the energy industry.
10
“This major gift is a game-changer for Western’s
Petroleum Geology offerings, and allows us to
elevate what was already one of the best programs
of its kind in the country,” says Western State
Colorado University President Dr. Greg Salsbury.
“Mr. Rady’s generosity will help generations of
future Mountaineers begin great careers, and we
couldn’t be more grateful.”
The average annual salary of a recent graduate
working as a petroleum geologist is $96,000 per
year, according to the American Association of
Petroleum Geologists. Western’s Moncrief Petroleum Geology Program is designed for geoscientists
pursuing careers in the oil and gas industry, as well
as careers in resource assessment and energy
policy. The program was created in 2002 thanks to
Paul Rady’s charter gift of $1 million.
“In today’s world the job market is more competitive
than ever before for recent graduates. Mr. Rady’s
generosity will help ensure that Western students are
given the best possible education and remain a top
choice for employers within our specialized field.”
Nathan Bennett Junior, Geology
Mr. Rady began his career working for Amoco in
Denver, before moving on to eventually become CEO
of Barrett Resources, then Chairman and CEO of
Pennaco Energy. Paul then co-founded his current
company, Antero Resources.
“Western State Colorado University’s Petroleum
Geology program is outstanding, and my experience
at Western gave me a great start,” Mr. Rady says.
“Giving back to Western has been one of the greatest joys of my life. With this gift, Western will be able
to grow its cutting-edge Petroleum Geology offerings
and launch many more careers in an industry that is
hiring large numbers of highly-paid geoscientists.”
“Everyone present at the birth of the Petroleum
Geology program can only marvel how Paul has
anticipated the growth in industry careers and
innovation over the past decade and gifted accordingly,” says Dr. Jim Coogan, the first Rady Chair of
Petroleum Geology. “His latest investment will truly
take Western’s offerings to the next level.”
Western’s Petroleum Geology faculty and students
work and learn in Hurst Hall, one of the most technologically sophisticated science buildings in Colorado.
The indoor and outdoor Petroleum Geology lab is
equipped with the state-of-the-art instruments, software, and data sets. During their time at Western,
Petroleum Geology students learn in small classes
taught by professors with top-notch experience.
Students spend significant time researching in the
field and developing professional contacts within the
energy industry. Nearly all of Western’s Petroleum
Geology graduates are either offered employment
in the industry after graduation or accepted into
graduate programs.

any of the Western Nation know of the Harters’
commitment to Western with Art’s years of service
to the Western State Foundation Board of Directors,
and most recently holding the position as President.
If that was not enough, Art and Susie have made a significant
financial commitment with a gift of $100,000 to the Western
University Center. In addition to their gift, Art was instrumental
in securing an Enterprise Zone classification for the University
Center. The Colorado Enterprise Zone program provides for
special tax considerations making gifts more advantageous to
donors and the University.
The Art and Susie Harter Meeting Room is on the second floor
of the University Center Building. The University Center is a key
gathering place for students providing a unique environment
on campus for students to engage and develop their leadership skills.
Combined with the State and Federal Income Tax
deductions, that means that Colorado tax-payers
may make gifts to the University Center at a significant discount! This is a powerful way to steer your
State tax dollars exactly where you want them to go!

In 2012, the last time the race rolled through Gunnison, Western

kick-start a new tradition and capture the attention of the world
in the process.

Running of the REd
We all know the old adage in sports,
“We’ll get ‘em next time.” Well, during
the 2014 USA Pro Cycling Challenge we
did exactly that and more.
One hundred and fifty-plus represented Western during the first Running
of the Red. The energy was infectious, prompting racers, students and
spectators to high five, fist pump and celebrate the moment and their
pride in Western.
And if that wasn’t enough, the race director created a hand written sign—
“USA Challenge loves Western!”—while the British Broadcasting Company
posted a picture of the Running of the Red, calling it one of their top
pictures of the day.
Relive the Running of the Red by checking out the YouTube video
capturing the preparation and execution of a special day in the
history of Western. The Western State Foundation is proud
of the small spark we were able to provide
at this year’s Pro Tour Cycling Challenge,
and even prouder of our participants in the
inaugural Running of the Red.

“When I reminisce about the four years I
spent at Western one word always comes
to mind – People. The fellow students,
professors, administrators and Gunnison
Valley citizens had a very positive influence
on my character then and in turn has carried through to today. I was a student that
enjoyed being active and involved in many
areas at Western. From sports to academics
to church to theater to student activities
to the business fraternity there was the
fellowship of others that I was able to share
with the joys, trials, disappointments and
accomplishments. ‘Giving back’ is something
that has always been very important and
fulfilling to me. Not out of obligation or
duty is it important for me to help Western
students, but from passion and compassion. Being a donor and Board member
of the Western State Colorado University
Foundation are ways that I and fellow Board
members help students at Western.”
“I enjoyed my time in Gunnison and explored
a one-of-a-kind outdoor environment with
people who would become lifelong friends.
As my future goals came into focus I found
professors who were passionate about
education and generous with their time to
provide a quality learning experience.
It is not always possible to thank those who
helped and gave selflessly early on in my
journey. So the best expression of gratitude
is to come back to help and give selflessly
to those who are early into their life journey.
I want to help students by fully supporting

“Being the first one from my family to go to
college I was ill prepared for the experience,
not only the academic requirements but the
financial burden. As a result I spent a disproportionate amount of time working and
not enough time preparing for classes or
participating in campus activities. ‘Fair to
poor’ would best describe me as a student.
I was, however, very fortunate to have Dr.
Mateik as my advisor, my role model and
someone who demanded a lot from me. My
experiences with Dr. Mateik prepared me to
enjoy a challenging and rewarding career.
I cherish my memories of Western and there
is not a thing I would change about my
experience. But I do know students of today
handle stress differently than I did. I believe
it is important to remove the stresses/
obstacles that rob them from being fully
integrated within the Western community
and limits their ability to excel as students in
their chosen fields of endeavors. For these
students it is important for me in some little
way to help them financially to meet their
academic goals and to be prepared for their
first exposure to the business community.
I am unfortunately unable to assist students
financially as much as I would like. To supplement my financial assistance I spend
my time coaching and mentoring young
accounting students, whether it be traveling
to Western to perform mock interviews,
reviewing their resumes electronically or
meeting with them for coffee in the city.
Western students are our future and I see
them as a good investment of our time
and money.”

Western. Having never lived on campus, the

until I left Gunnison and compared notes
with other colleagues. I’m trying to tell the

“I was an independent 17 yearold looking to attend a school as
far away from home, but still in
Colorado. A student that wanted
the best education with the outdoor experience mixed in for
some fun.
It is important to share my
Western experience and enthusiasm; to encourage young students to develop life-long skills
and a commitment to learning.
It was a huge part of my life that
means so much to me; I feel
every young student should
have the same opportunity.
I volunteer as a member of the
Foundation to make sure the
Western tradition carries on.
And I contribute in any way I can
so that every student that has
the desire to attend Western,
can.”
“I was a junior college transfer
student. I came to Western on
a football scholarship. I majored
in Accounting with the intention
of going to law school. While at
Western, more than one fellow
student told me that I would not
be able to get into law school
from Western. I felt that was ridiculous. I finished my Accounting
degree, took the LSAT, and was
accepted to five law schools in
three states – three private law
schools and two large state law
schools. I graduated from law
school cum laude and have
been practicing law for 31 years.
I was a good student with a
strong high school record and
high ACT scores, but I needed
the scholarship to cover the
expense of a college education.
And I loved to play football. I
would like to encourage Western’s
student-athletes and pre-law
students, especially those that
are both.”

a lost soul with zero direction in
my life. I tried to go to college

Western by focusing on opportunities that Western provided,

time at Western. My professors
believed in me, even at times
when I did not believe in myself.
They were connected to me
personally as well, often giving
me invaluable advice about life.
They also would challenge me
in order to prepare me for the
rigorous testing, etc. that was
soon to come. Subsequently, I
was incredibly well trained for
med school. I had learned that
‘I don’t know’ is not an answer,
which has served me well in my
current career. I now enjoy helping Western students believe in

that anything is possible.”

“I think I was a fairly typical student while at Western. I studied,
had fun, and experienced a lot of
growth in a lot of different ways.
Some kids come out of high
school wanting that ‘big college’
education (my two sons included), but a lot of kids are just
like I was. I could not thrive in
classrooms with 500 students.
I did NOT want to be in a huge
metropolitan area. I feel that it
is very important to get these
kids into a college setting that
they can succeed in – before
they give up and start working in
jobs that probably will negatively
impact their lifetime earning
potential. That does not mean
that Western can’t get the ‘best
and brightest’ students as our
alumni list will prove – some
kids just don’t realize how much
potential they have.
The two reasons I joined the
Foundation Board were to (1)
give something back to the
place that changed my life and
(2) help some of those ‘lost soul
kids’ find out how amazing they
can be.”

“I was a young freshman from
a small high school. I toured
CSU and CU prior to deciding
on Western. The small class
sizes and excellent staff made
it an easy choice. I think there
are many students like myself
that feel swallowed up by an
enormous auditorium full of students. In addition, the fact that
a person is being instructed by
a professor and not a teaching
assistant makes all the difference. Western has the perfect
environment, both inside and
outside the classroom, to create
a meaningful experience.
By serving on the Foundation
Board, I can have a voice that
will be heard regarding the
direction that Western takes.
Individuals on the Board can
infuse their particular passion,
and help create programs that
benefit students. I have done
this by starting, what we hope to
be, an annual trek to Nepal for
Western students and staff. We
are the Mountaineers after all.”
“I originally selected Western
because I wanted to major in
Accounting and the Accounting
Department had a good reputation. It was also affordable
and that was very important to
me as I was going to be paying
my own way. It was my original
intent to complete the first year
at Western and then consider
a transfer to a large business
school. During that first year,
however, I realized the personal
attention and direction I was receiving in structuring my classes
and developing my study habits
would not be possible at a larger
institution. I was learning all the
basics and enjoying my classes
and professors. Due to the small
class sizes and devoted professors, I continued to receive personal direction throughout my
time at Western and it was invaluable. The educational foundation I received at Western provided me with structure, tools
and confidence to successfully
achieve my goals.
Over the years, I have been
proud to financially support
the Foundation in achieving its
goals. In particular, my financial
support of the Borick Business
Building has helped to provide
current students with a learning
environment that enables them
to maximize their potential.”

The Colorado Classic trophy is back home
in Gunnison for the first time in 13 years.
The annual Western State Colorado
University and Adams State University
matchup ended with the Mountaineers
winning 39-37. Western defeated rivals
ASU on Homecoming, with a last minute
drive, scoring the winning touchdown with
just six seconds remaining on the clock.
A packed house stormed the field after
the win, holding the Colorado Classic
trophy high above their heads.

On Aug. 28, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Brad Baca
announced the University’s new Athletic Director as Jason Carmichael. Carmichael
had been the Associate Athletic Director at Western State Colorado University for the
past year and a half and held the interim Athletic Director role since late May of this
year. Carmichael officially began his tenure as AD on Sept. 2. Carmichael’s model
for success in Western Athletics begins with fundraising. Through a combination of
current fundraising strategies and new, more targeted messaging, Carmichael looks
to improve upon the Mountaineers fundraising successes. Building relationships
in the Gunnison Valley and on Colorado’s Front Range will be an initial priority for
Carmichael. Last year, 334 members supported the MAA (68 corporate members,
276 individual members), raising $278,031.

years to 1911. Since basketball started at Western, Mountaineer coaches and players
have created a legacy that has stood the test of time. This winter, one of those former
Mountaineer players will again be on the Western sideline in Paul Wright Gym.
However, this time it will be as the Mountaineers’ 27th Head Men’s Basketball Coach.

“Jim and I always felt it was important to support Western
students. This year in addition to cash donations I learned that
the Foundation could also accept non-cash gifts, such as jewelry,
which was just another opportunity to support our students.”
A strong advocate of education and champion of supporting
the aspirations of future women educators, the scholarship
will provide much needed aid with a focus on first-generation
students to attend a college or university.
In addition to their gift of $500,000 in 2007, Carol continues
to demonstrate the special place Western has in her heart.
Her generous actions to see Western receive 30% of her
estate will impact and shape the lives of future generations of
Western students.
The Haefelis’ efforts will provide for an annual scholarship now,
and an estimated $25,000 each year through their estate gift
to help many future generations of Western students.
30
Heritage Societ y
Benefiting from her generosity will be the University Center with
a designated gift of $200,000; the Borick Business Building
receiving $250,000; the President’s Club receiving $25,000
and providing $25,000 to the Jim and Carol Greenlee Business
Scholarship.
And as one more indication of Carol’s desire to give back, she
will be leaving two non-cash gifts in jewelry. The rings, valued
in excess of an estimated $25,000, are just another example
of how our donors can provide to our goals of improving a
remarkable learning environment in Gunnison.
In an article from 2007 honoring Jim’s passing and gift to
Western, Carol provided us with a quote and we felt compelled
to repeat it here again.
“Live life, love life!”

and with her husband, John, is establishing the
Delia Fay Haefeli Scholarship in K-12 Teacher Education.
The generosity of the Haefelis will ensure a legacy of future
educators from Western and the students that hail from
Colorado’s Western Slope.
“My time at Western was very special and important to me. It
helped me develop as a person, educator, plus gain valuable
worldly experiences. The people I encountered caused thought,
supported my needs, and challenged me to become better,”
says Delia. “Without my time at Western I would not be the
educator, community activist, or person I currently am. Due
to Western’s impact I believe that it is my responsibility to pay
forward the rewards I reaped in the form of a scholarship for
future educators. I look forward to following the careers of the
educators I assist.”
Delia F. Haefeli is a Colorado native who graduated from West
Grand High School in Kremmling, Colorado. She graduated
from Western in 1985 with a B.A. in Elementary Education.
Delia received her Master’s degree in Special Education in
1991 from the University of Northern Colorado. She was the

Delia has taught elementary and middle school for 33 years
and is an ardent Boston Red Sox fan.
Willard Wayne “Skip” Hunter, Jr

I
f we could go back and ask Skip Hunter to describe the keys to being
successful in business and life, his response would most likely be
keep it simple. Keep an eye on what is important, stay humble and
work hard.
The Western Nation lost Skip in 2013, who was preceded in death by his
wife, Virginia. In honor of Skip, his family and friends have taken steps to
make sure Skip’s presence will be felt in supporting other hardworking
students that choose to pursue an education at Western. This generous
scholarship will assist Western students with a preference for those who
graduated from a Colorado high school and are majoring in Business,
Accounting or Economics.
Skip graduated in 1953 and was grateful for the skills and experience his
Western education provided. He would be thrilled that his efforts over the
years will now benefit other like-minded hardworking students pursuing
degrees at Western. Over the years Skip was quick to share a few words
about being successful:
“I don’t give up easily.”
John and Delia were married in 1993 and have surrogate twin
daughters: Nicole, who is a middle level educator and Ashley,
who is a nurse at the Mayo Clinic.
We would like to pass on one bit of advice Skip would be providing if he
was here to current and future Western students:
We thank the Haefelis for their remarkable gift that improves
Western’s ability to attract and provide both the educational
and life experience to launch the careers of our future teachers.
“Don’t give up; keep working
towards your goal.”

ohn Wacker, a much-loved Western Music Professor, died May 11, 2014 following a tragic
car accident near Fairplay, Colorado. He was 55.
John began his musical journey at age 7 with piano lessons. He learned to play the trumpet
in 5th grade and played for the rest of his life. After earning his Bachelor Degree in Music
Education in 1983 from the University of Northern Colorado, John served as a Music teacher
and Band Director.
John left public school Music Education to pursue and obtain a Juris Doctorate from the University

Following graduation from North Texas, John became Director of Bands at Western, where
he taught for nine years.
John is remembered for his command of music, humor and unwavering support of those
around him. He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Nancy, the Movement and Music teacher at
Lake School in Gunnison, and their two children: son Brian Wacker, 13, and daughter Elizabeth
Wacker, 11.
“John was the most outstanding person, knowledgeable, helpful and supportive colleague that
I have had the pleasure to know in 24 years of Music teaching,” said Ken Todd, Senior Lecturer

renamed the scholarship the Dr. Kenneth H. and Mary Alice Hansen Memorial Education Scholarship.
Mary Alice also made a gift of mineral interests in Oklahoma to Western through a life estate.
Mary Alice received her B.A. in English in 1937 at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. She
married Ken in 1939, a marriage that lasted 56 years. In 1949, Ken and Mary Alice moved
to Gunnison, when Ken accepted a Professorship of Education at Western, where they raised
their three sons. Mary Alice lived in Western Colorado for 60 years. In 2009, she moved to
Hendersonville, North Carolina, to be near family.
Mary Alice was a gardener, a baker, an artist, an avid reader and loved a good game of Scrabble.
She developed a passion and skill for watercolor painting, and for nearly 40 years pursued her
art, winning several ribbons for her work. Most important, Mary Alice was a superb, loving and
beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She is survived by her three sons,
six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
M
irta Coleman, who along with her husband, Paul Coleman, Jr., was a longtime employee
and friend of Western, passed away on August 22, 2014.
The Paul Coleman, Jr. and Mirta M. Coleman Memorial Scholarship was initially
established by Mirta and Paul’s two sisters, Julia Cockrill and Hazel Dickey, to provide scholarship
assistance to students of Western State Colorado University. After Mirta passed away, the family
honored her memory by adding her name to the scholarship. The scholarship assists Western
students who graduated from Gunnison High School.
Paul married Mirta Meade Coker in 1951, and the couple and their two children (Rob Wallace
Coleman and Marta Jo “Jody” Coleman) moved to Gunnison in 1969. Paul began his duties at
Western instructing Health, Physical Education and Recreation. He also served as Head Baseball
Coach from 1970-76, and then became Head Basketball Coach from 1976-1978. He retired in
1987, after 17 years of service.
Mirta, who earned her Associates Degree in Accounting from a college in Harrison, Arkansas,
worked for the accountants Yale and Yale. Soon after, Mirta was employed by Western as an
administrative clerk and eventually as the Purchasing Agent.
Mirta is survived by her older brother, her younger sister, and her two children. She will be
dearly missed.

M
ountaineer Sports Hall of Fame Lifetime Award Recipient Pete Rodriguez (’63) passed
away November 30, 2014 in San Diego, California. Pete, one of the first Hispanic
coaches in professional football, passed away at the age of 75 due to a very rare
complication after a routine surgery.
Pete went from a Western State Colorado University football player to one of the top assistant
coaches in the National Football League. Pete played for the Mountaineers for three years under
Head Coach O. Kay Dalton.
Following his playing career, Pete got his coaching start at Stratton High School where he served
as both Assistant High School Coach and Head Middle School Coach for all sports that the
Middle School provided. After a two year stop as Head Football Coach at Harrison High School in
Colorado Springs, Pete moved up to the college game. He held assistant jobs at Western Illinois,
Florida State, Iowa State and then again at Western Illinois.
Joining the NFL in 1988, Pete spent 19 years with the organization as one of the top Special
Teams coaches in the league.
Twice during his career he was voted Special Teams Coach of the Year by his peers and he
was also named Special Teams Coach of the Decade (1990’s) by the Dallas Morning News.
While in the NFL, Pete coached for the Los Angeles Raiders (1988-89), Arizona Cardinals
(1990-93), Washington Redskins (1994-97), Seattle Seahawks (1998-2003) and Jacksonville
Jaguars (2003-2006). Pete retired from coaching in 2006 after coaching for 43 years.
Pete is survived by his wife, Sherry, and two daughters, Marla and Gina.
D
r. Tim Wawrzyniec, Adjunct Professor at Western and former Moncrief Chair in Petroleum
Geology, passed away on Thursday, November 6th, 2014 after a valiant two and a half
year battle with brain cancer.
Tim earned his B.S. in Geology at the University of New Mexico. He continued his education
obtaining his M.S. degree in Geology and Earth Science at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.
Tim went on to earn his Ph.D. at the University of New Mexico.
A Geologist with Antero Resources since May, 2014, Tim also served as a Co-Science Editor for
the Geological Society of America – Geosphere.
Tim has been involved with the Geological Society of America, American Geophysical Union,
American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists,
American Institute of Professional Geologists and New Mexico Geological Society.
“The first time I met Tim Wawrzyniec, he made me laugh with his droll correction of my Polish
pronunciation, and I knew I found a colorful colleague,” said Jim Coogan, Rady Chair in Petroleum
Geology. “In the years that followed, I enjoyed and learned from Tim’s many tales of work in the
Rockies, Switzerland, Mexico, Iraq, and more exotic parts of Texas. Walking into Tim’s office was
an immersion in his life, with Wisconsin, Green Bay Packers, and Big Lebowski memorabilia, and
many photos of adventures with his wife, Amy. He brought a combination of academic excellence
and real-world experience to the classroom, which is evident in recent notes from his students
to express their gratitude for Tim’s role in networking them to the right graduate program or to
their first job.”
