Did you know that May is Older Americans Month?
Older Americans Month is a time to recognize all the significant ways that
seniors contribute their talents and wisdom. At Lanakila Multi-Purpose
Senior Center, we are so fortunate to have the most talented and the
wisest seniors around !
April was Volunteer Appreciation month and we had such a
great time celebrating with all of our volunteers—from the ladies who
work in the kitchen and the ladies who run the front desk/reception area
to all of our talented and skilled instructors and AARP volunteer tax preparers—the list goes on and on. The cumulative hours invested by all of
our awesome volunteers is staggering. The Center would not be the
smoothly running machine that it is without all the sweat and tears of our
amazing volunteers! Even though we don’t tell you frequently enough,
we just want to say, “T h a n k y o u s o m u c h f o r a l l t h a t y o u d o !
Y o u a r e s o d e e p l y a p p r e c i a t e d ! ” A special Mahalo goes out to our
fabulous Emcee, Augie T. who entertained our n ā k ū p u n a and produced much laughter with his hilarious jokes! Also, thank you to Joy
Bulosan from the Development Team at Catholic Charities Hawai`i;
Pastor Aaron Tseng from Calvary Assembly of God; Jerry Rauckhorst
from Catholic Charities Hawai`i; and, St. Theresa’s Childrens’ Choir!
What a memorable experience!
The month of May brings an exciting opportunity for our
members to visit a U.S. National Historic Landmark—the Kaiwaiaha`o
Church as well as exciting opportunities for our “foodie” members to
dine at Café Julia and Menchanko-Tei. We have more cooking demos
lined up (TBA) and our new iPad for Seniors class will continue this
month. So, please stay tuned for new learning opportunities!

Real Property Tax Credit
The City and County of Honolulu offers a real property tax
credit to property owners who meet certain eligibility requirements. If you qualify, the maximum real property tax would
not exceed 3% or 4% of your income, depending on your age.
For homeowners 75 and older the percentage is 3%.
To qualify for this tax credit you must have a home exemption
for the 2014 and 2015 tax years; you do not own any other
property anywhere; and the income of all titleholders does not
exceed $50,000.
To apply for this tax credit, fill out an application available at
the following locations:

Important reminder: The application filing deadline is
September 30, 2014. You must file every year for this credit.

Ink wash painting, also known as literati painting is an East Asian type of brush painting that uses black ink—the same
as used in East Asian calligraphy, in various concentrations. For centuries, this most prestigious form of Chinese art was
practiced by highly educated scholar gentlemen or literati.Names used in the cultures concerned include: in Chinese shuimo hua (水墨畫), in Japanese sumi-e (墨絵) or suibokuga (水墨画?), in Korean sumukhwa (수묵화), and in
Vietnamese tranh thuỷ mặc (幀水墨).

Portuguese Cultural Club

4/2/14 - Portuguese Club excursion. Went to aquarium. It was real exciting. All the sharks, eels, seals, jelly fish, and so
much more. It's an education in itself. I had a great time. Then on to Chan's or a buffet lunch of chicken, sushi, salad bar
fruits, stews, fried rice, ice cream, etc. Very good local food. Had to walk slow, ate too much. Ha! Ha!
4/23/14 - We thank Dianne and staff for our Volunteer Appreciation Day. Augie T. was good M.C. and comedian. St
Theresa did very good singing. Food was good and the best part: Everyone was happy. Very good prizes. The prize winners earned it. Thank you!

Hawaiian Cultural Club

Hello everyone. It's been a month of being cold, rainy and very windy; but, I just hope everyone is doing well and
in good health. I just want to thank our club president, Frances DelaCruz, for trying hard to do a good job in conducting
all meetings. Our meeting always begin with a few songs, flag pledge and Lord's Prayer. Our musicians didn't come for a
few weeks so Mei Newmann played the ukulele accompanied by Frances and Cecilia - thank you ladies. Frances opened
the meeting by welcoming everyone, God Bless All, even those who are not here. She talked about Show/Sell that's coming up in May - she asked for donations to make our pickled onions, and also for volunteers to help out. Treasurers report
was given - meeting adjourned. We had a little Easter Party - Frances made a piñata and everyone had fun hitting it. It
went down when Larry hit it. We ate food provided by Frances, Sharon and Florence. Goodie bags were made by
Sharon. Many thanks to those who had been providing refreshments weekly. Our last meeting was held, along with bingo
games and refreshments. Our newsletter will be done by Mei Newmann starting in May - Good Luck. Hopefully weather
will clear up. "ALOHA AND TAKE CARE''
The Hawaiian Cultural Club enjoys their Hawaiian music each week --- thank you musicians! Some of the interesting "happenings" are: learning all about Prince Jonah Kuhio whose birthday was celebrated on March 26th ---he sponsored the bill calling for Hawaiian Statehood. Reminder that once a month Bingo is played - with prizes. Fellowship, followed by some good food for snacking is always enjoyed and welcomed.
"Show and Sell" on May 7th will feature some ono food stuff for sale - hope to see you there".

“ W e P l ay, W e L e a r n , W e S e r v e ”
The Lanakila Multi Purpose Senior Center (LMPSC) offers a place for seniors to go for recreation, education, and social
interaction. Many seniors go to LMPSC to get away from home for a few hours a week; others think of it as their second
home. Every day at the center, senior citizens come, they play, and they give back to their peers as volunteers. LMPSC is
the largest senior center in the state and is available to seniors 60 years and older. It’s target population lives in the area
from Fort Shafter to Ward Avenue but is also open to those who live outside LMPSC’s defined population area when
there are no comparable services in their community.

The seniors don’t come just to play. They come to serve and learn. LMPSC members give back to the community with
service projects by volunteering and entertaining at area hospitals, nursing homes and schools.

Japanese Cultural Club

Kodomo no Hi (Boys’ Festival or Children’s Day) is celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month.
Traditionally, families with boys display samurai dolls or suits of armor in their homes and fly
carp-shaped streamers outdoors. It is a time to pray for their sons to grow up to be healthy
and brave. And that being said, a taste of Japanese culture is in store for the Lanakila Headstart
children who will be joining us to celebrate Boys’ Day. Colorful origami fishes handcrafted by
Mrs. Madeline Kageno, and headbands “Hachimaki” created by President Mary Sueda will be
gifted to the preschoolers. The headband is a symbol of both perseverance and effort within
traditional Japanese culture. Thank you Mrs. Kageno and President Sueda for contributing
these treasures. Adding to this festive event, a taisho koto group called “Melee O’Hawaii, will
provide entertainment to our special guests and to our May birthday celebrants, which include
our 90+ honorees Kenneth Nip and Sally Nakata.
Millions of people fall victim to fraud and many of these victims are our seniors. That is why it is critical for seniors to be educated on the different types of scams. The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) continue with Part II - “Avoid Being a Victim: Know The Threats That Investors Face”. Learn about how you can avoid becoming a
victim of investment fraud.
Unfortunately, germs, such as bacteria, fungi, yeast, and molds, are a natural part of our environment. The ones
that are generally at risk of getting ill from germs in food are young children, older adults, and those who are often sick.
Raenani Willing from “SNAP”, will present Part II on “Safe Food Handling”. Come and be enlightened on proper food
handling, and best ways to keep from becoming sick from bacteria in foods.

On March 27 Jeff Roache and Chris Bartolome from the Honolulu Fire Dept. spoke about fire safety
and the many things we can do to prevent life-changing falls. An interesting fact shared was that our fire department is
the only one in America with purple hearts as six firefighters who responded after the Pearl Harbor attack were recognized
for their bravery.
We enjoyed a sing-along on April 3 with Brian Suzuki and the Hawaii Kayo Tomo No Kai, a club of senior citizens who love to sing. Words to many of the old familiar songs were printed in a booklet for everyone to participate. As
music brings people together and is great for our physical and mental health, we all had a great time singing.
Another form of exercise for physical health and well being is “tai chi”, an ancient Chinese form of martial arts
which incorporates meditation. On April 10 we were impressed by the Nuuanu “Y” Tai Chi group led by Tom Amina as
they displayed the various moves and forms to music. The eldest of the 12 participants was 97 years of age and still active
in this art form. Want to stay young and healthy? Tai Chi may be the answer for you.
April birthdays were celebrated on April 17 with special recognition for Chieko Sugimoto (92) and Takejiro Higa
(91). God bless all of our celebrants with many more happy years. It was a special morning as Nelson Yoshioka and his
karaoke singers and dancers entertained us. Mahalo for the wonderful program!
On April 24 our speaker on “Elder Law Care in Hawaii” was Allan Nakata. We learned two important things: (1)
You have a right to appeal being released prematurely from the hospital and receive two extra days of care; and (2) You
can request for a written assessment to confirm your diagnosis if you are being referred to a skilled nursing facility.
