PRESIDENT’S COLUMN
APRIL 2012
I NEED YOUR HELP!
The JOC has been fortunate in the
last year to stem the tide of declining membership which we had been
experiencing for the previous several years. A lot of things tended
to cause this decline, not the least
of which was an aging membership
and folks selling their cars (or getting the heck out of California like
so many of us would like to do!).
Our membership has now stabilized at around 300 members and
cars, making us the second largest
Club in the country, but we have to
work at holding that spot. There is
a certain amount of natural attrition each year, so we need a steady
flow of new members to hold our
own (or even grow). And we need
YOUNGER members.
So I need your help in recruiting new
members. It’s really quite easy. We
have a large supply of JOC business
cards and brochures to help. I would
be happy to send a supply to any
member who would like them. Just
drop me a note. We all meet nonmember Jaguar owners from time to
time. Heck I even stick the business
cards under the windshields of Jags
I see in parking lots. I keep a supply
of cards in my glove box for just that
purpose.
Recently I was discussing the Club
with my next door neighbor, a nonmember Jag owner. He told me he
knew about the Club but thought
it was just for Classic Car owners.
When I told him that way more than
half our membership drove newer
cars, like his, he was very surprised.
Jaguar is doing a lot to attract
younger buyers, but we are not getting enough of those into the Club.
Young is good. We need young blood
to keep the Club vibrant. You don’t
have to own a classic Jag to enjoy
events like Saddle Peak or Yosemite…..you just need to love to drive
your Jag.
When you can engage a prospective
member, send them to the website,
www.lajagclub.com, (what could
be easier to remember than that?).
Suggest they click on the newsletter link and download the latest Jag
Tales and ask them to read about
our upcoming events. There is sure
to be something for everyone.
So I need your help. Help me recruit
new members and help keep our
Club strong. Drop me an email at
[email protected] and I will send
you those cards and brochures.

Hi Kevin,
I was pleased to see Frank Weikel’s gorgeous Vanden Plas on the cover last
month. I too, have an Series III XJ6 which
was bought new by my father and was
my daily driver for many years. Now it
is enjoyed regularly as a weekend car by
my family, but especially my son, Bryan.
I’ve enclosed a photo.
Does the Club have a recommendation
for tires for the Series III. I’m told that
the Pirelli P4000 is no longer made.
Coker Tires has a set of closeout P4000’s
in 225-70-VR15, will they fit?

Silver Hammerite
Under Hood Finishes
By Kevin Easton
In the continuing saga of the 1971 XJ6,
I found that the newly polished intake
manifold and freshly rebuilt ZenithStrombergs looked absolutely out of
place next to the original air cleaner
housing with its rust colored finish and
general greasiness.
The JCNA website indicated that the
original finish was silver Hammerite
but in the absence of that, suggested a
Rust-Oleum product that can be found in
most any hardware store. A trip down
to Home Depot and $7 later, I was ready
to begin.
The hammered paint yields a textured
but clean finish with lighter and darker
Volume 57 No.4
Bill and Bryan,
Your XJ6 is a lovely car. As you know,
I have a spot in my heart for XJ6’s and
there is nothing greater than sharing our
passion for Jaguar with the next generation.
The OEM P5’s were 215-70-VR15 and
while the 215-70-15 is commonly available, I haven’t been able to find a V-rated
or even an H-rated tire in that size these
days. The search becomes harder if you
are looking for a white wall. Ask me how
I know.
The XJ6 didn’t need the V-rating because
it could travel at speeds in excess of
140mph but rather because of the immense weight and appreciable cornering
ability for a Saloon. The original spec P5
was a hard tire that handled very well in
all conditions and was quiet at speed...
everything you expect from an OEM tire.
However, it wore quickly and it was not
unusual to replace them at 15k miles at
$175 each (in 1987 dollars). The later
P4000 was a decent tire which was also
available in an HR as well as the VR- rating. But, it appears that we have to live
with an S-rated tire and there are many
options. Yes, you’ll find that the ride is a
little softer than what you’re used to and
you will have to keep it under 112 mph. Keeping them
inflated to the manufacturers maximum
recommended pressure will help ride
quality and longevity.
shades. It was used in various Jaguar
parts including the round air filter canister on the early E-type and of course,
the rectangular air cleaner box on ZS
equipped Series II E-type that was borrowed from the XJ6. It also appeared on
the carbon canister, headlight scoops
and fan motors. The XJ6 oil filter canister was a green Hammerite and a similar
color is also available from Rust-Oleum.
When it comes to painting, preparation
is always important, but this product
doesn’t require a primer and because of
its inherently imperfect finish, the sheet
metal really didn’t require anything in
the way of bodywork. I prepared the
surface with a thorough degreasing and
then scuffed it a scotch brite pad and
brake cleaner.
Spraying the product is easy and it covers well. The manufacturer recommends
several medium coats. I started with a
light, dust coat on the first application
and then a couple of medium coats. The
resulting finish is one that looks durable
and can be easily touched up. We’ll see
how it holds up over time with the heat
in the engine bay but on the bench, it’s
much improved!
www. lajagclub.com I’ve used a variety of tires on my XJ6’s
but I’ve always liked the ride and wear
characteristics of the Michelin’s. I’m
told that the new Green X series offers
a lower rolling resistance and is a harder tire...both good things in my book.
They sell for about $125 each at Costco, so they aren’t cheap. I also like the
Bridgestone Turanza which is available
in a whitewall. It is a softer tire but still
handles quite nicely. I had a set of BFG
T/A’s once (No, black wall, not raised
white letter!) and they were as soft as
a pillow at the Four Seasons. The local
tire store suggested Kumho and Hankook (in white walls), again S rated, but
I’m undecided. I did put the Kumho’s on
my Denali and they’ve worn exceptionally well. So, those are options as well. I
hope this helps.
If you have a recommendation for Bill
(or a stash of NOS P5’s), email me at [email protected].

WESTERN STATES
EVENT RECAP
By Steve Kirby
The Club was well represented at last
month’s Western States Meet in Phoenix….and what an event it was. The
weather was perfect and the accommodations couldn’t have been better, but
the camaraderie that pervades an event
which covers thirteen states and Canada
simply could not be topped.
For those who didn’t attend the AGM
Meeting which preceded the WS, things
got cranking on Saturday night with the
opening banquet where all the attending regional and national award winners
were presented their trophies. The list
of JOC members receiving awards is too
long to mention, but suffice to say, we
hauled off a lot of hardware. A super
Silent Auction was held in the lobby,
featuring a number of black and white
photos of old movie stars with their Jaguars.
Sunday was Concours day. The city of
Chandler literally blocked off the main
street and even gave us the central
downtown plaza for our show, and what
a show it was. Over 70 cars in judging,
plus a mind boggling group of special in-
terest cars including C Types, D Types, an
XKSS, an SS90 and an SS100…and even
a Zagato bodied XK140, all side by side
with dozens of XK’s, E Types and all the
rest. What a surprise we all had when
we learned that our special guest speaker was none other than Norman Dewes!
Norman stayed around all afternoon
signing his book and chatting with all
comers. The Concours ran smoothly and
was tightly judged, which resulted in a
few disappointed contestants, but in the
end all was well and the best cars came
out on top. All contestants received a
very generous goodie bag of Western
States logo items.
Sunday evening we were treated to a
fine Mexican dinner and mariachi band.
Most didn’t retire early, as the bar was
full of friends, old and new, deep in Jaguar conversation.
Monday was Tour day. The route covered over 220 scenic miles through every imaginable Arizona habitat. A BBQ
lunch was served halfway through and
even Norman made the drive. Monday
night was the Beetles themed dance
party which drew a capacity crowd from
beginning to end. By the close of the
evening everyone was singing along and
more than a few suffered the effects of
too much time on the dance floor. One
highlight was a table covered with assorted candies most hadn’t seen since
the 50’s and 60’s….I enjoyed a Charleston Chew, while Cindi scarfed up the
Zero bars.
Tuesday was Slalom day and while not
heavily attended was fun for all. Many
others were spotted on the golf course
or around the pool where JCNA spon-
sored an impromptu party. That evening
the closing banquet featured awards to
all the winners of the various events,
presented by Norman Dewes. The next
morning’s farewell breakfast got us all
fed for the drive home.
A hearty congratulations are due to the
Central Arizona Jag Club, who picked up
the ball on short notice, and made this
Western States happen, when it was in
danger of lapsing for lack of a sponsoring
Club. For a smaller Club, they worked
tirelessly to be sure we all got the full
Western States experience.
JOC members attending included Ken
and Ann Smith, Art and Jackie Guzman
(over from their new home in Las Vegas),
Charlie, Colee and Harriett Hallums, Patti
Fox, Larry and Judy Graven, Franchon Lyons and daughters, Larry and Vicki Currie, Bill and Gingie Streitenberger, Richard and Sydney Darnell and yours truly
with wife Cindi. Numerous San Diego
and Inland Empire members joined Jag
lovers from all the western states, plus
Texas, North Carolina, Nebraska, Florida,
British Columbia and even one intrepid
fellow who drove his XK150 FHC all the
way from Ontario, Canada! And those
were just the folks I met. If you missed
this Western States, make a commitment
now to attend WS2014…..you won’t be
disappointed.

XK-RS Ride and Drive at Hornburg
Recently, the Membership was invited
to take part in a Ride and Drive Event at
Hornburg Santa Monica to celebrate the
launch of the 2012 Jaguar XK-RS super
car.
The XK-RS is a limited production version
of the XKR featuring revised body work
with a new deck spoiler and my favorite
detail, air intakes where the fascia meets
the bonnet. The RS also features the latest iteration of Jaguar’s adaptive dynamic suspension and bigger brakes.
Under the hood, the RS offers an additional 32 horsepower over the standard
R-model with 542 horsepower and 501
ft. lbs of torque thanks to aggressive
ECM mapping and a revised exhaust system. The exhaust note is somewhat docile at idle but thanks to variable baffles, it
quickly becomes raucous as the throttle
opens. Impressive indeed…
of ten years, John started with a bonnet
and cowl assembly from one of the original 12 Factory Lightweight cars. True to
the original, John recreated the body
panels out of aluminum. Unlike the original, this car is set up to run two ways; as
an open car with small Perspex screens
ala D-type or with a full screen and hard
top. The car was in D-type spec on this
day. Special thanks to John who brought
the car by trailer from Orange County for
this event and watch for a feature on this
car in coming months.

The dark grey metallic XK-RS featured on
our cover is still available for sale. Call
Nesh for special Club pricing on this rare
cat.
Jaguar delivered the two press cars that
have been making rounds at the major
auto shows across the US; a while coupe
and a blue convertible. In fact, this was
the only convertible in the world and
yes, we, along with Hornburg’s best clients, were allowed to take it for a spin.
Nesh Sekulic, the General Manager of
Hornburg Santa Monica, wanted to contrast Jaguar’s latest supercar with its legendary predecessor, the E-type. Thanks
to several members, we were able to exceed his expectations and enjoy a splendid day.

Hornburg cleared out the showroom to

John Murdoch’s 1968 E-type FHC
JOC Member John Murdoch’s
‘68 E-type FHC graces the
showroom at Hornburg Jaguar in
Santa Monica during the launch of
the XK-RS Super Car.
I acquired the E-type in ‘89 and the minute I
drove it out onto Mulholland, it found her
irresistible and bought it on the spot for the
asking price. I took it up to Big Sur a few years
back after PCH had been resurfaced making for a
silky-smooth, twisting, gorgeous visual and tactile
experience. This car was made for that road, whether
the Brits knew it or not.

The Desert Classic
Concours d’ Elegance 2012
by Paul McNabb
The Fifth Annual Desert Classic found a
new venue this year at the Rancho Mirage Westin Mission Hills Resort & Spa.
The location was super posh and the
weather, a bit on the cool side for the last
week on the coast, was pushing eighty
without a cloud in sight. Three events
were staged during the course of the
weekend. First up was a classic tour on
Saturday morning through the Coachella Valley and enough of the foothills to
make the old cars sweat a little. While
the cars were puffing up the hills The
Desert Classic Auction took place selling vintage and modern cars. The finale
was Sunday on the golf course where the
Concours d’Elegance was staged. Unfortunately, I was only able to attend the
concours.
plete and thorough rebuild. Originally a
California car but stored for 23 years until it was exhumed in 2005 with 70,000
miles, the paint was changed from yellow to black. This classic took first place
honors in the Jaguar class and counted
other honors as well. A few more wins
could spell a national championship.
Perhaps Black Beauty and Lucille should
meet for a coffee sometime?
(Continued on page 12)
Five or six classic Jaguars were driven
to the festivities and took refuge in the
“Car Corral,” a good excuse for not having to do too much cleaning before the
spectators were allowed to come by for
a look. The show cars were positioned in
a pleasant setting near the water on the
immaculate golf course. Several owners
were quite nervous early in the morning as the judges toured the cars looking
for crimes against the nature of Jaguars.
Later they were able to relax a little and
tell stories about their cars.
Walt Lima of San Diego brought a 1967
primose yellow SI 2+2 Coupe, chassis
1E77487. A remarkable car in practically
original condition, only 16,000 miles
showed on the speedo. A respray of the
exterior was done around 1990 but the
interior and drive train remained untouched. Close by an extremely early
outside lock coupe had been converted
to a lightweight look. A locally owned
car, aptly named “Black Beauty,” had
been restored to the highest level. Tom

As many of you know, my XK150 has
won numerous awards and continues to
be ranked in the JCNA top five annually,
despite being driven about 3000 miles a
year. Many people ask me, “how do you
keep a driven car so nice?” In this series
of articles I will share with you a few
tips and tricks that have been useful for
me……I hope you find them useful too.

THE SHOW FIELD
All prepped, all packed and driving onto
the Show Field. IT’S SHOWTIME!
Well, not exactly, unless you are lucky
enough to trailer your car to the Show,
you had to put some miles on it to get
there, so it’s no longer perfect. A little
last minute elbow grease will surely get
you a few extra points. So here’s a game
plan for the final prep of your car. We’ll
use the same top to bottom, inside to
outside, dirtiest to cleanest strategy that
we’ve employed from the first article.
I like to start with the interior, but first
open the bonnet so the engine cools.
Wipe down the seats and door trim
with leather or Armorall wipes (that we
packed in our go bag). Clean the inside
windows one more time and then use
the large bristle brush to “fluff” up the
carpet. Pay attention to any pedal pads
or switches you might have used on the
drive. Double check the door jambs.
Stand back and really STARE at the interior from the same angle as the judges
will.
Next go to the boot and repeat as above,
then on the engine compartment. This
is an area that tends to rack up a lot of
deductions even if driven only a few
miles. Check for leaks, drips and other
defects. Use that fat magic marker to
touch up any chips or dings you find.
Clean the bugs out of the radiator (with
those picks you brought) and touch up
any paint chips (or bugs you can’t get
out) with the marker. Use the leftover
Armorall wipes on all the
rubber parts.
Recently I picked up a new trick from
veteran Concours junkie, Mike Zavos.
Seems his 100 point XKS tends to leak
oil from the front of the AC compressor. The spinning clutch whips the oil
all over the engine compartment. So
after cleaning his engine bay at home,
Mike installs the highly sophisticated
“prophylactic” device shown below
with duct tape. The cardboard catches
all the oil and Mike simply pulls it off on
the Show field. I have seen old sweat
socks used on leaky hoses and various
other techniques used where parts tend
to rub together in transit. Be creative
but protect your previous work.
Next it’s on to the body and exterior
windows….any good speed shine product is fine, everyone has their favorite.
Just do the body first and then the windows so as to get any overspray off the
glass. (Continued on page 12)

El Hathaway brought his familiar and
highly restored XK150 DHC and survived
a near dunking in the water hazard to
earn a third in the Jaguar class. A 1956
XK140 DHC, chassis S 817720, was trailered from Salt Lake City by Gary and Sandra Lindstrom. Originally purchased by
Beulah Bailey, a WWII aviatrix and postwar racing driver with a win at Watkins
Glen under her belt, Gary bought the
car in 2006. He drove it for three years
but found some rust spots in the rear of
the body were in dire need of repair. He
affected a complete restoration, doing
much of the work himself, and finished
just in time for the show. Originally in
pastel blue the color was changed to a
rich burgundy.
Finally to the wheels and tires. PLEASE
use the brush to remove any grass clippings caught in the tire tread or flung
up into the wheel wells. I can’t tell you
how many deductions I have seen from
this oversight. Use your Back to Black or
Armorall on the tires. If you have wire
wheels, get out the big Q tips and spend
some time, but only on the upward facing surfaces. The judges can’t see what’s
on the underside, so don’t waste the
time.
The event was well organized and should
warrant consideration for club members
plans in 2013. Members might enjoy
checking the websites www.xkedata.

details on the classics mentioned in this
report.

The Muckenthaler is located at 112
West Walnut Avenue. Fullerton California. To get there get off the 91 FWY on
the EUCLID STREET exit “Go North” turn
left onto Malvern Avenue, go west, proceed past Walnut Avenue to Wesley Avenue “Turn Right” onto Wesley Avenue
and you will come to a special entrance,
on the right side of Wesley for the Jaguar
Owners Club. You will be greeted by a
club member with all the concours forms
you will need, after you receive your concours packet you will be directed to your
Jaguar Class area.
Finally arrange your extras (tools, manuals, etc.) in a tidy display behind the car.
And for heaven’s sake, organize your sitting area. Nothing detracts from a nicely
displayed car more than a Beverly Hillbillies picnic scene just behind it.
