STEWARDSHIP 2011
TOUGH LOVE
The law of Christ based on
godly love does not supplant a
law based on justice. It goes
further. It demands the living
out of what we say in the Lord’s
Prayer: “Forgive us our
trespasses as we forgive those
who trespass against us.” Isn’t
this “hard bargain” really the
“tough love” of the Holy
Trinity? Beginning always with love, God calls,
encourages, and strengthens us to share the
great mystery of divine life. By our actions we
express our answer to God’s call.

Word, it speaks to us for the times that we are
currently experiencing. Our Lord, Jesus Christ gave
His life for our salvation. Let us take time during
Lent to reflect on that great sacrifice.
“The Acts of the Apostles”
In the Easter Season, Maggie Martin will offer a
scripture study course on “The Acts of the Apostles”.
Acts is an anonymous book, attributed to the author
of Luke. It takes us from the disciples, frightened in the
upper room, to the Ascension, Pentecost, the early trials
of the Apostolic Church, the outward mission from
Jerusalem, to Paul’s 3 journeys, ending with Paul’s
ministry in Rome. It begins where the Gospels leave off,
and helps us to understand the trials and triumphs,
challenges and blessings, as the early Church took root.
A full reading of the Gospel of Luke & Acts is
recommended. Dates and time for this course are to be
announced. If interested, please contact Maggie Martin
at 234-4040.

Dear Father Christopher Nowak
and Parishioners of St. John of God,
The students of 8th Grade would like to take
this opportunity to thank you for all of the support
that you give to the school of Our Lady of
Providence. It is because of your sacrifices that
we are able to receive a rewarding education in
an atmosphere of peace and Christ’s love.
At Our Lady of Providence we experience
growth in a friendly, caring, nurturing
environment. But, we are also able to grow
closer to God.
Again, we would like to tell you how we truly
are grateful for your sacrifice and support to
keep our education and relationship with Christ
ongoing.
Sincerely,

Society of St. Vincent de Paul
234-6535, ext. 103
In the Gospel, says: “Whoever
fulfills and teaches these
commands shall be great in the
kingdom of God.”
Holiness demands that we live who
we are because our identity and mission
cannot be separated. “Doing” who we are,
letting our identity express itself in mission, is
lived out in feeding the hungry, sheltering the
oppressed and clothing the naked.
Let us pray today for the grace to be
generous with our gifts to help those who are
suffering. By your gift to the Society of St.
Vincent de Paul, you indeed put your faith into
action.
Join us and be at the heart of Jesus’
preaching. Our next meeting is Tuesday,
February 15th at 12:30PM in the
Conference Room of the Parish Center.

TÚ DECIDES
“Si tú lo quieres, puedes guardar los
mandamientos”, nos dice Eclesiástico (Sirácide).
Dios “ha puesto delante de ti fuego y agua;
elegir nuestro propio camino.
nuestro amor. Si vas más allá del asesinato verás
la ira que corroe nuestra compasión. Si vas más
allá del falso testimonio (perjurio) verás las
mentiras y engaños que producen este
comportamiento.

From Father Chris:
Why are we counting the attendance at all the masses and publishing it in the
bulletin?
Several people have asked this question recently. First, let me say that information is a good thing.
The Ushers have been asked to count all the adults at all the masses because it is good to know how many
people are attending each mass on a weekly basis. Also, the Diocese asks us for specific mass counts on
occasion. No, I am not going to use the information to justify omitting a mass due to numbers. One
individual has expressed (his opinion is probably reflective of several) that they are a little concerned of
seeing the large numbers of people at the Spanish masses and the declining numbers at the English masses.
If you feel this way, please let me know and we don’t have to put the mass counts in the bulletin. I would
image that the attendance at mass is reflective of the demographics here in Central Islip. This is why we
need to further develop Lay Leadership in the Spanish and English communities and why we have the
numbers we do, enrolled in the Pastoral Formation Institute.
Today’s readings challenge us to choose freely and wisely to observe the laws given by a loving and
caring God. He revealed His laws to His Chosen People through Moses and the prophets in the Old
Testament, and through His own Son, Jesus, in the New Testament. For the Israelites, the Torah was not a
set of laws but the instruction or teaching intended to promote the holiness and wholeness of each believer.
It was the revealed will of a caring God, for the people with whom He made His covenant.
In the selection from the Sermon on the Mount in today’s gospel, while challenging his disciples to
live a life of justice and righteousness which should exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees, Jesus, as the
new lawgiver, sets forth his own position with regard to the Law given through Moses, by providing new
interpretation and meaning for the old laws. In today’s gospel passage, Jesus explains the real meaning of
three Mosaic laws concerning murder, adultery and false oaths.
God’s Blessings Always, Fr. Chris N.,
