Lobsterfest Poster - Jessea Gay Marie
The Lobsterfest art contest is a
competition I take seriously, and I
am excited and honored to have my
watercolor art selected as the face
of the 2016 festival. I am Jessea
Gay Marie, a permanent resident of
the Placencia Peninsula, and I admit
I did my research on the Caribbean
spiny lobster as I considered my
design, that wonderful crustacean at
the center of our fun lobster festival--not to be confused with those
big claw Maine lobsters. I found
inspiration in a photo of a Caribbean
lobsterman surfacing with his catch;
I also wanted to show that the spiny
lobster must be caught by hand
using only snorkeling gear, making
the hunt much more difficult.
I discovered Belize about four years
ago as I looked for a beautiful place
to retire, and realized my move
two years ago when I packed up
and drove down from California in
my Ford F-150, pulling my trailer
full of belongings. I’ve recently
resettled just north of Seine Bight
village and spend much of my time
exploring the variety and culture of
Belize. Unlike many expats here
who’ve fled bleak winters and cold,
I moved from the temperate, islandview enclave of Santa Barbara
where, as the graduate adviser of
global and international studies,
I sat in an office nearly on the
beach with a view of the Channel
Islands. Unfortunately as much
as I love Santa Barbara, it is one
of the most expensive cities in the
entire U.S. and not budget friendly
for retirement. I am so happy that
in comparison, Belize is perfect
for me for many reasons including
the wonderful Caribbean people,
great food, and many jungle/beach/
diving adventures.
graduate students through their
degree requirements, my core self
is that of artist. I went college as
‘a non-traditional’ student (polite
term for mature older student) after
my two sons had grown up and my
marriage had ended, completing
a total of four degrees before I
was done, including a AA degree
with Fine Art Student of the Year
award, 2 BAs magna cum laude,
and a MFA as well. I taught digital
art and web design nights at Santa
Barbara City College in addition to
my day career at the University of
California, Santa Barbara. And for
my own art creative outlet, I began
doing public art through street
painting at the local I Madonnari
festival each year at the Mission in
Santa Barbara, CA. The event is a
fundraiser for money for children’s
arts in the schools, and just
celebrated their 30th anniversary
May 28th – 30th, 2016. All the
street painting festivals around the
U.S. started from this one in Santa
Barbara, which in turn is based on
the one in Italy that is renowned
worldwide. My street paintings are
large (usually 8 feet by 12 feet),
created over two or three days, and
then are either purposely washed
off or wear away afterwards so
photos are all that’s left. Prior to
retirement, I attend festivals several
times a year as an invited artist,
volunteering my artistic creativity,
colorful chalks, and the physical
pain involved in the back-breaking
work to festivals in many locations,
including Puerto Vallarta, MX
where I created a colorful iguana,
San Rafael, CA with my Leafy Sea
Dragon seahorse, or my octopus
‘escaping’ from its square in Santa
Barbara, CA.
I sincerely hope the residents of the
Placencia Peninsula and visitors
from elsewhere enjoy my artwork,
the fantastic festival food, dances,
music, local art wares, and all the
fun activities of Lobsterfest. And I
wish to add my appreciation to all
the other artists who entered their
designs, as well as to the sponsors
and raffle prize donations for
making our Placencia Lobsterfest
one of the best festivals anywhere!

Placencia Lobsterfest Artwork
Many, many thanks to all the talented artists who submitted entries in this year's Lobsterfest Art Competition.
The Placencia BTIA Board of Directors served as the 2016 panel of judges for the contest, and though the
voting was very close, they chose Jessea Marie's “Snorkler with 2 Spiny Lobsters” to be the official image for
this year’s Lobsterfest Tees and Tanks. The other 4 entries are shown below for your enjoyment.
We encourage all artists, and aspiring artists, to compete for the honor and the prize of $500 in next year’s
Lobsterfest Art Competition.

PENINSULA VOLUNTEER FIRE
DEPARTMENT DEVELOPING
NEW FIRE STATION
By Wanda Stakutis
In 2006, a group of concerned
residents
started
discussions
regarding the construction and
operation of a Fire Station and
Emergency Medical Center to
serve the Placencia Peninsula. This
led, in 2007, to the acquisition of
land at the Placencia airstrip and
the formation of the Placencia
Volunteer Fire Department by the
Rotary Club of Placencia. Rotary
cannot own property, therefore,
the land was signed over to the

Placencia Sailing Club host its
4th annual Youth Sailing Optimist
Regatta. We had six BzSA authorized
sailing clubs initially registered
with 22 young sailors in total but
due to unforeseen circumstances
only five sailing clubs and a total
of 14 sailors were able to attend
on the weekend. For weeks before
the regatta we had been worried we
wouldn’t have enough wind on the
weekend to test the young sailors
skills but come the Friday morning
winds started picking up making
this year’s regatta a real testing
ground for these young sailors with
winds between 10-15kts shifting
direction during the day and choppy
seas, the young sailors had to put all
their skills to work. All the young
sailors displayed courage and
determination over the weekend but
there can only be three top places at
the end of the day in a regatta.

moved it to the site at the airstrip,
after which fund raising started
to bring the structure to a livable

Where in the World
is the Breeze?
Annalisa Clark took the Placencia
Breeze up Camelback Mountain in
Paradise Valley Arizona, USA. She
visited for her daughters college
graduation, Nicole LaCroix.
The cactus in the background takes
10 years to grow one arm and it is
called a saguaro cactus. It can grow
up to 70 feet (21 m) tall. It is native to

Seine Bight
Women’s Softball
Team,
The Flames!
By Lorris Moreira
Thanks to the effort of several women in Seine Bight there is now
a Women’s Softball Team. They have proudly named themselves
The Flames and expect to be on fire! The ages are 18-40 and the
objective is to get fit, keep their minds and bodies occupied and
to think positive thoughts. Some of the women currently are not
working and having some trouble finding a job and having something
like this to look forward to helps keep them balanced and optimistic.
The members so far are Lorris Moreira, Christy Martinez, Shannon
Augustine, Laverne Valerio, Andrea Valerio, Beata Guzman, Tiffany
Moreia, Jacey Williams, Janelle Ramirez, Rosita Valerio, Briannie
Augustine, Allana Castillo, Paula Martinez, Norma Leslie, Naomi
Moreira, Muriel Moreira, and Merl Palacio. They are already entered
in a competition headed by the Zabanehs in Independence.
As with everything, funding is needed for equipment to keep a
program like this going.
Please cheer these ladies on for this brand new wonderful program in
Seine Bight Village!
