DEADLINE FOR
KNIGHT NOTES
10th OF EACH MONTH
KNIGHT NOTES
January 2015
Grand Knight Comments
I want to personally thank all of you for your
thoughts, prayers, cards, flowers, and love
you showed my family and I during the care
and death of my Father. My Dad was a proud
member of Father Saylor and supported the
council and me, more than you know. He
even made sure that we paid his dues for
2015. Tom Crete, a very close friend, Building Association VicePresident, and Manager of Martenson Funeral Home came in
on his day off to handle the arrangements. Father Tom
conducted the Mass when I asked and did a wonderful service
in honor of my Father. These are a couple of extraordinary
Brother Knights who I am proud to be surrounded by.
The State Bowling Tournament is here and will remain for 7
weeks so the Council will be busy. We have events and specials
every Saturday for the next two months. We expect many visiting Brother Knights and families from around the state to stop
by the Members Lounge. I ask that we greet them with a big
smile and make them feel at home. We know that we clean up
after ourselves but our guests do not; so if you see garbage,
glasses, debris outside please pick it up.
I want to congratulate our Knight of the Year, Family of the
Year, Angel, Behind the Scene, and our Shining Armor award
winners. I will not give out the names till next month so as not
to spoil the surprise since the party has not taken place as I’m
typing this.
Just take a look at all the articles and pick an event or two to
help with or attend. I invite all Brother Knights to stop by the
Officers reception on January 10th n the hall.
Unfortunately, it is time to prep the snow blower and get the
shovel ready. Stay safe, warm, and happy travels to our Snow
Birds.

Chaplain’s Corner
It’s hard to believe that we are at the
beginning of a ‘new year’ and a new
commitment to our Faith. And soon
enough (twelve months from now) will
bring this year to a close. How we face
the year before us depends on how we
have seen the year that has already gone
by. What are your recollections of last year (2014)? What do
you regret; and, more importantly, for what can you be
thankful?
My Faith in what lies ahead rests on my Faith in what has
gone by. This is as important to my life as a “Fr. Saylor
Knight” as it is to my spiritual existence. What we accomplish
in this year ahead of us depends on that Faith. We have
accomplished much in the past year. It is only in the light of
that Faith which we hold to as followers of Jesus. Our
Christian lives empower us to be who we claim to be as
Knights of Columbus. There are many projects and activities
that will come before us and demand our involvement. We
will be involved to the extent we have that Faith that guides
us as Catholics. One will only be involved to the extent that
he is also practicing his Faith. One depends on the other.
Our commitment to our Fr. Saylor Council and to the Knights
of Columbus is most important. We have built upon the years
behind us, one year moving up from the previous year. There
will be many activities and demands upon our time and
talent. This applies to every man who claims to be a member
of our Fr. Saylor Council. I hope and pray for you, the men
who call themselves ‘Knights of Columbus’, that you show
your Faith as followers of Jesus and, likewise show your Faith
in our Fr. Saylor Council by your active involvement in our
meetings ,our programs, and projects.
Fraternally,
May God bless you and your families in this New Year with a
renewed Faith and a new dedication to who we are.

Father Saylor will be conducting 2 Church (Membership)
drives this month. The first event is at Our Lady of the
Angels Parish on January 10th and 11th 2015, after each of
the masses. Saturday mass is at 4:00 pm and Sunday masses
are 8:00 am, 10:00 am and 12:00 pm. The following
weekend, January 17th and 18th we will be at Saint Frances
Cabrini Parish. Saturday mass is at 5:00 pm and Sunday

drives are important to keep our Council moving forwards.
We will have the new membership forms (form 100) with us
after each mass and as always, in the Members Lounge.
Father Saylor 3774 has many things to offer to our worthy
families, so why not spread the word and bring in a candidate
or two!!!

DID YOU KNOW?
Just by attending our monthly meetings you have the potential to win not one but two cash prizes? That’s right
– two chances to win some extra spending money and who couldn’t use that right after the holidays. And when
Jerry Teed missed out on our $259 door prize last month that means our January door prize will be even bigger!
Our attendance drawing pot will also grow by another five bucks in January because Iannucci Giuseppe was not
there to claim his prize of $460.
The next winner could be you! All you have to do is be there when your name is drawn. So come on out to enjoy the fellowship
of your brother Knights and share your thoughts about the many programs we have planned in the new year. After the
meeting while you enjoy the free snacks and refreshments, you could play some cards, or watch a bit of the game on the big
screen, or just join in some lively conversations. And you may just go home that evening with some extra cash in your pocket.
“Through my Eyes”
I saw…big boxes filled with sweatshirts carted off to help keep children warm this winter sponsored by our own Michigan
Knights of Columbus Holy Cross program.
I saw…over 100 of our little family members come together to enjoy a fantastic afternoon. They got entertained by a wonderful
magician got their faces painted, enjoyed some cookies and juice boxes, received a special gift from the Council and then
brought the house down when the big guy himself showed up - none other than Santa Claus! What a great day of fun for
everyone.
I saw…the Executive Board and Building Association board members come together for the annual joint officers meeting where
very little business was discussed but everyone enjoyed a great meal, drinks and fellowship as they wrapped up outstanding
2014 and began to anticipate a fantastic 2015.
I saw…a Saturday evening with two great events. It began with our own Mass presided by our very special Chaplain, Father
Puzio. And it ended with over 150 family and friends at our annual Christmas party and the announcement of our Family and
Knight of the Year winners. What a great evening for everyone.
I saw…our friends, family and brother Knights stopping by the lounge on Christmas Eve to enjoy some free refreshments, deli
delights, and fellowship as we wished everyone a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year!
I saw…all those folks who like to party hearty ring in the New Year at our annual lounge New Year’s Eve bash! It was a fantastic
party as the lounge rocked all evening long with everyone having a blast.
It was another great month of events and projects that your Council conducts for the benefit of our Council members and the
community. And there is so much more to come in the months ahead. So come on out and be sure to bring your family and
friends.
Happy New Year to you and yours,
Bob Cooper - DGK

Giving Calendars 2015
Thinking of something to buy the person that has everything for Christmas or are you just looking
for a great gift idea for their birthday? Why not buy them a Holy Cross Children’s Services
Calendar. These calendars are only $25.00, with 378 chances to win! There are: 365 - $50.00
prizes, 12 - $500.00 prizes and the Grand Prize of $5,000.00.
What a great way to help the Knights of Columbus’ number ONE Charity in the State of Michigan! It’s so easy just purchase one
of these calendars. With your purchase, you are helping Brother Francis Boylan and his staff, affect a positive change in the
lives of so many young men and women not only now, but well into their future.
If you would like to purchase a calendar or two for yourself or for those “hard-to-buy-for” people in your life, come down to
the Members’ Lounge and see any of our friendly bartenders. They will be more than happy to help you. If you have any
questions regarding these calendars, please contact the Grand Knight Scott Kolpasky or Mark Gaworecki (734-320-6083).

The Hearts of Giving
Happy New Year! We will be open to enjoy all of the football
games so come on in and please consider bringing a dish to pass!
Starting with the weekend of January 10, we will host the
"State Bowling Tournament". There will be lots of specials and
different events occurring so read the flyers around the Lounge.
If you would like to help in any way, I know we could use your
assistance, just ask! Well, we learned a lesson last year with the
cold and snowy weather, so we are going to do something
different this month and in the month of February. Instead of
our usual Steak Dinner, we will offer a Family Dinner inside the
lounge prepared by Tony Lalli and crew on the last Wednesday
of the month. I hope you can make it! Please be sure to tell all of
your family and friends! Of course we will have the Acoustic
Knights on the first and third Fridays of the month so come and
enjoy a night out! Don't forget Super Bowl Sunday which is on
February 1st, enjoy the big day with us and as always feel free to
bring a dish to pass. I'm sure we will be running some sort of
special! May we all have a great year!
The Downriver Crisis Pregnancy
Center is looking for help. They are
always in the need of baby items:
baby formula, baby food, baby wash
clothes, baby furniture and most of
all baby diapers. Father Saylor
Council will be collecting these
items for the center. You all have
heard of the giving tree for
Christmas, where you take an ornament from the tree
and purchase the item. Well, our council will have a heart
in the lounge and on this heart will be little hearts with
the items needed at the center. All you have to do is
choose a heart, purchase that item and return it to the
council by February 14, 2015. We will deliver the items
collected on. February 16, 2015
Until next month,
Jim

STEAK COOKOUT OF THE YEAR
January 28, 2015
(Except this time we do it Italian style)
Last year it was so cold at the end of January that we had to cancel our steak cookout. This year we are taking no chances
and moving the cooking inside. Instead of steak, we are unleashing our deadliest cook – Chef Tony Lalli – to do his
best. It will be an Italian-themed dinner but not the same old, same old pasta in red sauce that you are used to. This will
be a
Cacciatora! It is a chicken fricassee that would make Marcella Hazan, the dean of Italian
cook
ing, blush. So you don’t associate chicken with Italian, well then come out at the
last Wednesday in January and experience something totally different. You
will be pleasantly surprised! It is multo bene!!!
Chicken Cacciatora with pasta and sauce, the best salad in Downriver
with an Italian slant this time, and warm Liberati’s garlic bread.

Super Bowl Party
Come hang out at the Father Saylor Lounge on Sunday, February 1st as
we gather around the big screen for the biggest football game of the
year. Super Bowl XLIX is not far off and the Father Saylor Council will be
celebrating this final game with happy hour pricing during the game. We
will be asking for people to bring a dish to pass like last year. We will
have a sign-up sheet in the lounge a few weeks before the big game.
Crazy commercials and hopefully a close and exciting game will be on
display along with some 50/50 raffles for everyone’s enjoyment. Hope
to see all of you on Super Bowl Sunday and as always keep checking
your monthly Knight Notes for up-coming events.
Sincerely,
Joe Martinez (Warden/Activity Director)
LTC Is an Important Piece of the Puzzle
There are many financial consultants and retirement
authorities who emphasize the need for a long-term care
(LTC) product for estate preservation and family
protection. While many commercial life insurance
companies have gotten out of the long-term care
business, the Knights of Columbus considers LTC a very
important piece of the family protection puzzle. The
Order has been actively offering our members this
product for nearly 15 years without a premium increase
on current policyholders. Members who wisely
purchased an LTC plan from the Knights in 2000 are still
paying the same premiums today. Even better, our LTC
coverage is backed by the full strength of the Order,
which remains rooted in our strong Catholic values. Talk
about stability when it counts.
If we have not spoken about your need for LTC coverage
in your family portfolio, please take
some time out of your schedule to
meet with me.
Remember, long-term care policies
are underwritten based on your
health, and you most likely will
never be any healthier than you are

SPECIAL LOUNGE EVENTS
Just a reminder to everyone that January starts the State
Bowling Tournament and also a variety of events in the
Lounge. On January 17, I will be the D. J. in the Lounge
for our guests, followed by Trivia Night on the January 24.
Then on Saturday, January 31, there will be a steak
cookout for the bowlers as well (not to be confused with
our normal steak cookouts that will begin again in March).
We will celebrate Super Bowl Sunday on February 1 with
a party in the Lounge as already advertised.
Our Grand Knight Scott Kolpasky will host our Second
Annual Mardi Gras Party on February 7. February 14th is
Valentines’ Day, there are plans to bring in some Karaoke
(not yet determined, stay tuned for more info). We have
already confirmed Karaoke for February 21st. Please be
sure to welcome our guests during this time period and
show them why we have such a wonderful Council. I hope
you enjoyed the Holidays! Have a safe and Happy New
Year.
Sincerely,
Joe Martinez (Warden/Activity Director)

Knight Notes Expense
It is so important to our Council to provide all of the information about what
is happening at Father Saylor Council and the important work we are doing
for the church, community, and our members. That being said, we are
always exploring ways to reduce cost to the membership. We currently
spend approximately $600.00 per month ($7,500.00 per year) to publish
and mail the Knight Notes. To the many members who have signed up for
the email on-line version of the Knight Notes, thank you! You are helping us
in our cost reduction efforts. To those of you who have access to
computers, we ask you to please sign up for the on-line edition. The on-line
version is exactly the same as the one being mailed except it is in color. You
really get a much sharper newsletter and you can print any or all of the
pages as you wish from your own computer. As we look for suggestions to
help further reduce our cost an idea submitted is to print and mail a one
page calendar of events to keep you appraised of what is happening in our
Council and publish the full version of the
Knight Notes on-line only. This would be
a savings of approximately 9,350 pages of
printed paper each month which equates
to 112,200 printed pages per year, not to
mention the reduction in our mailing
expense. As you read this, please
consider signing up for the on-line version
as well as suggesting other ways to help
our Council reduce the cost of operations.
Thank you,
The Knight Notes Committee
