Duxbury Doings - Duxbury Senior Center
Duxbury Doings
May 2016
Greetings from the Director—
A Nationally Accredited
Senior Center
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY
Mother's Day in the United States is annually held on
the second Sunday of May. It celebrates motherhood
and it is a time to appreciate mothers and mother
figures. Many people give gifts, cards, flowers, candy,
a meal in a restaurant or give treats/gifts to their
mother and mother figures, including grandmothers,
great-grandmothers, stepmothers, foster mothers,
sisters and friends.
I celebrated early this year! During the first week in
April I traveled with my Mom and sister to
St. Thomas. It was my first trip to this beautiful
island. It was a time to kick back, enjoy a meal, have
a good laugh without the constraints of time and life
commitments.
I hope as you celebrate this day with the special
women in your life you get to “stop and smell the roses” and really enjoy how wonderful they are and how
much they mean to you!
Happy Mother’s Day!
♥Joanne

Melanoma/Skin Cancer
Detection and Prevention
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the
United States. Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation from the
sun is the main cause of skin cancer. UV damage can
also cause wrinkles and blotches or spots on your
skin. The good news is that skin cancer can be
prevented, and it can almost always be cured when
it’s found and treated early.
Take simple steps today to protect your skin:
Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m.
and 4 p.m.
Use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher.
Put on sunscreen every 2 hours and after you
swim or sweat.
Cover up with long sleeves and a hat.
Check your skin once a month for changes.

May is Older American’s Month!
Every year since 1963, May has been the month to
appreciate and celebrate the vitality and
aspirations of older adults and their contributions
and achievements. It is a proud tradition that shows
our nation’s commitment to honor the
value that older adults continue to contribute to our
communities.
The 2016 Older Americans Month theme, “Blaze a
Trail,” emphasizes the ways older adults are
reinventing themselves through new work and
passions, engaging their communities, and blazing
a trail of positive impact on the lives of people of
all ages.
Older Americans Month is an opportunity for us to
celebrate all that you do and this vibrant
community that you have created at the Duxbury
Senior Center! Donna & Ellen, Outreach

Veteran’s News
May, 2016
Attention: Vietnam era Veterans who served in Southeast Asia.
Hopefully, by August of this year many more thousands of Vietnam War Veterans, those
suffering from bladder cancer, hypothyroidism, Parkinson’s-like symptoms and even high blood
pressure, could learn they will be eligible for VA health benefits and disability compensation.
While not assured, Congress has mandated that the Institute of Medicine (IOM) continue to
conduct reviews and research that supports changing the strength of association to herbicide
exposure for these ailments. For bladder cancer and hypothyroidism, it found “limited or
suggestive” evidence of an association, an upgrade from previous “inadequate or insufficient”
evidence.
The IOM review also considered whether conditions resulting in Parkinson’s-like symptoms,
apart from Parkinson’s disease itself, should fall into the same limited or suggestive category of
evidence. Yes it should, the IOM concluded, finding “no rational basis” for the current exclusion.
If you have questions about your military/VA benefits, please contact the Duxbury Veterans’
Service Officer, Mike Thorp, located at the Senior Center, 781-934-5774 X5740.
