2016 August Newsletter - Duxbury Senior Center
Duxbury Doings
August 2016
Greetings from the Director—
A Nationally Accredited
Senior Center
Did you know on December 31, 2016 the number of
Massachusetts residents 60 or older will be greater than the
number of residents under 20, according to David Stevens,
President of MA Association of Council on Aging.
We are seeing the growth of the senior population at the senior
center—classes are full, lunch counts are up and the number of
people using our transportation services has increased.
To meet the expanding needs and to continue to offer new and
innovative programming, we have allocated resources from the
state funded Formula Grant to hire a Program Coordinator to
work 10-hours a week with the Programming staff. Our new
staff person, Andrea Brandeis will assist in the implementation
of wellness programs including teaching a falls prevention
exercise class called “Balance for Life” , Tuesdays and Thursdays @ 10:00 AM.
And, as our transportation services continue to grow, we have
hired a new bus driver to provide service on Friday. Molly
Schaeffer will provide transportation for the participants of the
supportive day program, medical transportation and daily
transportation. We are also looking for another part time bus
driver to augment transportation needs. If you have a clean
driving record, valid MA driver’s license, successfully complete
the CORI check, and are willing to complete required training,
this might be the perfect job for you. If interested, stop by the
senior center to get a copy of the official job posting.
To accommodate the new staff, we have moved some things
around in the building and have created additional office
space. We will be moving the computers from the Computer Lab
to the alcove on the 1st floor and we will be creating offices for
the Medical Transportation Staff in the space next to the
Outreach Office. This change should be completed by
September. Stop by and see Becky, Bob and Reb in their new
space.
We are excited to begin the new fiscal year and are busy
planning programs, activities and expanding services to meet
your needs! I have a suggestion box outside my office and am
always pleased hear from you! If you’d rather email me your
ideas and suggestions/comments, my email is
[email protected].
Enjoy August! And I hope to see you at one or more of our
upcoming events. Don’t forget to get your Passport to Summer
Fun @ the Duxbury Senior Center. Look for activities with the
passport logo and join the fun!
Bon voyage,
Joanne

Is clutter taking over your home?
Effecting your relationships or
creating safety problems?
What is Clutter?
Clutter is anything we don’t need, want, or
use that takes our time, energy or space,
and destroys our serenity. Objects may be
thrown about or neatly stacked or stowed
in storage.
Our clutter seems to have a life of its own,
to multiply without effort on our part. We
may feel overwhelmed, controlled by our
possessions, and/or doomed to be hopelessly disorganized. No matter how we
deal with our clutter, it can be a source of
pain and shame to us and to those we live
with.
Despite this pain, we fear throwing things
out. We think we might need it, fix it, or
wear it again. We don’t want to be wasteful
or ungrateful. We don’t know what to keep
and what to discard and how much is
enough.
Decluttering is not merely eliminating, but
gradually transforming our space so that
we surround ourselves only with things
that express our purpose and who we are.
Although we may cling to our clutter, what
we really yearn for are surroundings of
beauty, order, serenity; a balanced life; and
harmonious relationships. Reprint from Clutterers Anonymous
Clutter becomes hoarding when the rooms in
your home can not be used for their intended
purpose, your possessions make your home
unsafe and put you at risk for eviction or
your personal attachment to your belongings
become so great you cannot let go of them
without great anxiety and distress.
Getting Help with Clutter or Hoarding There
are many clutter reducing and
organizing books available at your library if
you assess your problem can be
handled by yourself. Downsizing and
organizing professionals often do
presentations in the community, take
advantage of these programs.
If your situation has become a significant
problem in your life, please reach out for resources and support.

Veteran’s News
August, 2016
The Austrian government has posted online a listing of 1,715 U.S. and British airmen who died
in Austria during World War II- along with the time and place of death. Among the number are
1,582 Americans. This first comprehensive accounting also contains the names of 113 who are
missing in action.
U.S. Ambassador Alexa Wesner said “the listing will serve as a valuable resource to the U.S.
government and professional historians, as well as to the many family members who wish to
know more about their loved ones, their sacrifice, and the people they committed their lives to”.
A commemoration book entitled “Missing in Action: Failed to Return” lists the names and
locations of the missing. It was noted that these service men had been forgotten. The
commemoration book honors them now as those “whom Austria and all Austrians owe their
freedom”. “They were very young men, who fought in a war – far away from their hometowns
and families – in order to liberate Europe and therefore also Austria from a tyranny and
dictatorship”.
If you have questions about you military/Veteran’s benefits, contact the Duxbury Veterans’ Service Officer, Mike Thorp, located at the senior center, 781-934-5774 X 5740.
