Duxbury Doings
September 2016
Greetings from the Director—
A Nationally Accredited
Senior Center
FINDING BALANCE AT
THE DUXBURY SENIOR CENTER!
As we prepare to celebrate National Senior Center
month with the other 15,000 senior centers around the
country, we are focusing on 4 key elements that
promote successful aging.
The first is PURPOSE. In a recent study it was found
that those who had a strong connection and a sense of
purpose tend to live longer than those who didn’t! If
you haven’t considered volunteering, we have many
opportunities and will match you to positions that will
be of interest to you!
The second is FITNESS. It has been proven that
moderate exercise at any age can improve your health
and wellbeing. Strong bones and muscles will also
help you maintain your independence as you age. See
the complete list of fitness classes on page 3.
The third is FRIENDSHIP. Having friends is good
for your health. Seeing a friend brightens your day
and it can also help protect you from Dementia;
lowers stress, aids in recovery from illness and helps
you stick to good habits. Meet a friend at the senior
center and grab a cup of coffee or sign up for a lunch
or themed dinner.
And finally, LEARN SOMETHING NEW!
Whether it’s learning how to dance, speaking a
foreign language, taking a Lifelong Learning class,
joining a book club—learning something new has
wonderful benefits for adults 50-plus. It helps to keep
your mind sharp, improves memory, and increases self
-confidence. (Check out the full listing of our
Lifelong Learning courses on page 12 and read about
our special educational programs throughout the
newsletter.
We are committed to assisting you in finding balance,
every day, 365 days a year! If you have an idea
regarding other ways that we can add balance to your
life and the lives of others, give me a call or send me
an email at [email protected], we are
open and excited to expand our offerings to meet your
needs!
Look forward to hearing from you or seeing you at
one of our upcoming programs!
♥Joanne

Flu + You
The single best way to help prevent the flu is to
get an annual flu shot.
For older adults, it is especially critical to get
vaccinated early in the season, which has been
shown to be associated with greater benefit
compared to later in the season.
We make it easy for you with convenient

LONG TERM CARE OPTIONS –
We are excited to announce a new monthly service at the
Duxbury Senior Center. Make an appointment and meet
with Elaine Buonvicino, Independent Insurance Agent to
review your existing Life Insurance Policy(ies) or Long
Term Care Policy. Are you concerned about your
coverage? Is your life insurance policy still in place and is
there a cash value? Are your beneficiaries
up-to-date? Do you have adequate coverage? Elaine is able
to inform and advise seniors on these matters.
Complimentary appointments are available monthly
beginning on Wednesday, September 28 beginning at
10:00 AM. Call the Front Desk to book an appointment
by calling at 781-934-5774, ext. 5703

Update on Veteran’s benefits:





Are you a Veteran? Did you serve a minimum of 90 days in wartime or 180 days in
peacetime after basic training with honorable service? You may qualify.
Do you have your DD214 or for WWII Veterans your discharge papers? For any benefit, you
need to provide this documentation. This document should be with your important papers so
that a family member can verify your military service.
Did you receive your “welcome home bonus”? If your home of record is from Massachusetts
and you served during a wartime period, you are eligible for a bonus. This is for all conflicts
going back to and including WWII. To verify whether you applied and received
compensation call the Massachusetts Treasurers office at 617-367-9333 X859.
As a Veteran you are eligible for VA healthcare. This would be in addition to your current
coverage. There is no monthly premium and full service healthcare is available via clinics or
hospital. There is an application form #10-10ez to apply. A copy of your DD214 is needed as
well.
You and your spouse are eligible to be buried at the National Cemetery in Bourne, MA.
Again, your DD214 must be provided for entry. Your funeral home knows the process for
entry.
If you have questions about your military/Veterans benefits, call the Duxbury Veterans’ Service
Officer, Mike Thorp, located at the senior center, 781-934-5774 X5740.
