Summer Safety Tips for Seniors
Good Questions for Your Good Health
Slow down. Strenuous activity in extremely hot
weather adds strain to the heart. If you must be active,
choose the coolest part of the day.
Try the “Ask Me 3” questions when you talk
with a doctor, nurse, or pharmacist, to
better understand your health.
Take regular breaks when engaging in physical activity on warm days.
What is my main problem?
What do I need to do?
Stay cool. If you don’t have air conditioning, spend
time at an air-conditioned shopping center, senior
center, library or movie theater.
Why is it important for me to do this?
Developed by the National Patient Safety Foundation .
Plan outdoor activities in the cooler early morning
or evening hours. Stay in the shade. Wear a
wide-brimmed hat and umbrella to protect yourself
from sun overexposure. Use U/V skin protection.
Stay cool in your home. If you must be at home
without air conditioning: Stay in the coolest part of
the house. Close curtains or shades on sunny
windows.
Stay hydrated. Carry water or juice with you and
drink continuously even if you do not feel thirsty.
Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which dehydrate the
body.
Eat small meals and eat more often. Avoid foods
that are high in protein, which increase metabolic
heat. Sandwiches, salads, fresh fruit and vegetables
are good choices.
Dress for the heat. Wear lightweight, light-colored
clothing.
Discuss with your doctor how medications and/or
chronic conditions may affect your body's ability to
manage heat.
Take the heat seriously. Rapid heartbeat, dizziness,
diarrhea, nausea, headache, chest pain, fatigue, clammy skin, mental changes or breathing problems are
warning signs that you should seek immediate medical attention. Frail seniors who live alone should be
looked in on often during hot weather by family members, neighbors or friends.
Adapted from American Red Cross in Greater New
York.
In addition, spend some time developing your
own questions prior to a visit, have a pen and
paper handy to write down answers and consider
bringing a family member or a friend with you to
help you get the most of your visit. Don’t be
afraid to ask your medical provider to SLOW
DOWN or to speak in “plain English” vs.
medical jargon. See Donna or Ellen in
Outreach if you need more information.
The “Coping with Loss Group” will NOT meet
in July and August. Contact Ellen Gillis, LICSW
at Ext. 5731 for information about the group
and September start date.

Veteran’s News
July, 2016
We are fortunate to live in Massachusetts. Our state provides the best Veteran’s benefits of any in our United
States. Not only are we entitled to VA benefits but also to a number of state benefits as well. Each city/town,
all 351, in the Commonwealth is served by a Veterans’ Service Officer available to answer questions and guide
you through the benefits application process.

Massachusetts offers housing benefits, financial assistant benefits, education benefits and other programs.
Housing units are based in Bedford, Boston, Gardner, New Bedford and Worcester. There are soldier
homes in Chelsea and Holyoke.

Veterans who have been granted a disability are entitled to a tax abatement on their town property taxes. If
you have lost a limb and eye sight in one eye in connection with your military service, you may be exempt
on motor vehicle excise tax and sales tax.

Welcome home bonus is provided to Veterans who served in WW II, Korea, Vietnam, and Persian Gulf
wars.

Tuition waivers are available to all state colleges and universities. Guard members are included in this
benefit as well.

There is Veterans preference for all civil service exams.
This is only a brief summary of benefits. There are more. See: www.military.com/benefits/veteran-statebenefits/massachusetts. If you have questions about your military service or benefits, contact Duxbury’s
Veterans’ Service Officer, Mike Thorp, located at the senior center, 781-934-5774 X 5740.
