IMPORTANT NOTICE
NOMINATING COMMITTEE REPORT
This is the time when we look back and what was,
and forward to what will be. We thank all of those
who have stepped up to help during the past year,
and we ask for member participation to continue in
the new year. With Fort Vancouver, the results are
always positive. Our squadron is remarkable. From
classes, cruises, and potlucks… Lady Skippers, Sea
Scouts, Reel People, Water Trails, and Fort Vancouver Paddlers; there is never a dull moments for our
members. If you are new to Fort Vancouver please
get to know us. What you will learn is that lifetime
friendships have been formed within this group. We
genuinely care about our members, and we look forward to the time we spend together.
The following members are nominated to serve Fort
Vancouver Sail & Power Squadron during the 2011-12
Bridge year, and will be voted on by the squadron
membership at the Annual Squadron Meeting, to be
held on 16 February 2011. Additional nominations can
be made from the floor prior to voting.
We ended 2010 with the Annual Holiday Party. The
food was delicious and the Lady Skippers outdid
themselves with this years raffle. All Lady Skippers
contributed to the prizes and Gayle and Althea
added the finishing touch to the special gift bags and
contribution raffle baskets. Then there was Janett
Chandler and Marge Smith. Janett is our squadron
treasurer, and both Janett and her mom, Marge, are
members of the Lady Skippers. Throughout the year
they knitted, cross-stitched, collected and created
numerous baskets and Christmas displays (including
several beautiful wreaths), AND they spent hours
decorating the facility for our holiday party. Everything was beautiful! Thank you so much for all your
hard work.

Our first big event in 2011 was the Portland Boat
Show. Once again, Fred Taylor and Bob Cravens
worked tirelessly to make the D32 booth welcoming
and productive. Many thanks to everyone who took
part in this project.
The annual meeting will be held at Juliano’s Pizzeria,
15606 SE Mill Plain Blvd., Vancouver.
The pizza is FREE (plan to purchase your own drinks
and side dishes). Please plan to attend.
I looking forward to seeing many of you at the annual
pizza feed and election of officers for the 2011-12
Bridge year. Come join us… the pizza is free.

2010 has ended and now we begin 2011. Not such a
bad thing if you consider we had great turnouts for
most activities.
2009 Recreational Boating Statistics
Boating statistics have just been released by the
USCG. The reports are ALWAYS compiled one full
year back, therefore the latest report, released in
2010, is for 2009.
With a fabulous turn out at the Government Island
Turkey Feast, we had a lot of fun. Our turnout was
counted at 35, people not boats. Hopefully this year
will bring even a larger crowd. Take a look at the
2011 Cruise Schedule and make plans to take part.
In 2009 the U.S. Coast Guard counted 4730 accidents that involved 736 deaths, 3358 injuries, and
approximately $ 36 million of damage to property as
a result of recreational boating accidents.
We have done well in all departments and I am sure
it will continue. We’ve already had a lot going on to
start the year off. The excitement began at the boat
show. With the fire extinguisher enactment as a MAJOR draw, we had a great opportunity to increase
awareness as well as membership. The seminars
advertised at the show should also help bring USPS
into the public eye. I hope to see this as a year of
real excitement for present as well as new members.
The fatality rate was 5.8 deaths per 100,000 registered recreational vessels. This rate represents a
3.6% increase from last year’s fatality rate of 5.6
deaths per 100,000 registered recreational vessels.
Compared to 2008, the number of accidents decreased 1.23%, the number of deaths increased
3.81% and the number of injuries increased 0.81%.
Almost ¾ of all fatal boating accident victims
drowned, and of those 84% were not reported as
wearing a life jacket.
I would like to thank all the vessel examiners and instructors for all your hard effort. It takes time to examine boats and educate the boater while doing so,
but that is what we do best… educate. It also takes a
lot of time to prepare and teach a class or seminar. I
want to thank Fred Taylor for all his hard work and
time spent in the education front, and for all his PR
work and efforts in coordinating the boat show. I
hope he continues in 2011.

I am not a typist and it would take me a week to type

Cook-off Jan 19. Janett Chandler won the Chili
Cook-off by a large margin, with George Eaton

Portland Boat
Show is now
just a memory. But it's an interesting memory at that.
For sure it looked like everyone had fun doing their
part. Here is a list of some of the great things that
took place.
We met before the boat show and trained 56
squadron members in the correct operation of the
Bullex fire extinguisher demonstrator.
Bob Cravens, who made himself indispensable
when it came to organizing the training, setting up
and tearing down the booth, and visiting the
booth each morning with change for the raffle
ticket sales. In addition to all of that, Bob served
3 shifts in the booth. The show booth would not
have been the success it was without Bobs selfless efforts.
We passed out over 600 copies of a JanuaryFebruary USPS class schedule that covered all of
D-32.
So I want to thank Bob Cravens and everyone else
who worked to make this effort the success that it
became.
We passed out an equal number of "Federal Requirements for Recreational Boats"

We had at least 1500 people visit our boat show
booth.
USPS got 2 minutes of air time on Channel 12.
Raffle Sponsors
In addition to an uncounted number of adults, we
trained nearly 200 children in the correct use of a
fire extinguisher.
Special thanks to the individual and local businesses
that sponsored our raffle at the 2011 Boat Show. All
of these business deserve our support.
We sold perhaps 240 raffle tickets, making 12
people winners, and raising $280 after expenses
for the squadron.

Did You Know This?
The Boat Show organizers have enthusiastically
asked us to bring the Bullex back next year, and
to also consider setting it up at the Sportsman
Show, Feb, 2012.
If you find a web site advertising needed boating
items for a really good price, take the information to
West Marine. They will match prices with any web
site.
Everyone that played a part in this effort can be
proud of the results. There are several members that
deserve special mention for their behind the scenes
efforts to make all of this happen.
Barbara Petersen, who tirelessly stamped each
hand out from USPS National with Ft Vancouver's website information. Well over 2000 documents were stamped.

What is Change of Watch? Each year in March, Fort Vancouver Sail & Power Squadron celebrates the accomplishments of the past year, and paves the way for the year to come. The 2010/11 Officers of the Bridge will be honored for their services and dismissed from their duties, and the newly elected 2011/12 Officers of the Bridge
will be sworn in.
This year we will keep the price down and ramp up the good times by preparing the meals in-house and kicking up
our heals afterwards. As an added bonus, our Change of Watch is being held a week early this year, and that
means that our own Phyllis Sines will be swearing in our new Bridge. The following weekend, Phyllis will step down
as District Commander at the District Conference and Change of Watch.

Chili Cook-Off Winner
Look for us to be organized in time to attend the Alder
Creek kayak clinic on Vancouver lake this spring. After that we might go to the Marshall pool on a Sunday
afternoon, to practice self rescue and Eskimo rolls in a
warm pool.
