THE OXFORD QUILTERS GUILD
September/October 2016
President’s Message
I would like to take a few sentences to introduce myself to the guild members. I am relatively new to quilting. I
made my first quilt two years ago for my son who was moving away to University. I’m currently finishing my 7 th
quilt. From my first introduction to the Oxford Quilter’s Guild, I was made to feel welcome. I’ve enjoyed meeting so
many new and interesting people. I truly appreciate the opportunities for growth as a quilter and the opportunities for
friendship and fellowship that the guild offers. For this reason, I have accepted the challenge that the role of
president requires. I definitely welcome ideas and suggestions from you the members for how we can make
participation in the guild enjoyable and rewarding.
I hope all of the members have had a wonderful summer. Your Executive has been busily making plans for this year.
We’ve begun our Red and White challenge to celebrate Canada’s Sesquicentennial Anniversary of Confederation.
You will be happy to hear that there will be a fall retreat on the first weekend in November. This year the retreat will
be in Stratford.
I’ve had a sneak peek at a few of the quilts for our 2017 quilt show. Gwen Tracey and her team are progressing full
steam ahead on plans for the Quilt Show. We still need members to volunteer to help with the preparations for this
year’s show. In particular we need a small team willing to work together on our advertising sub-committee for the
quilt show. Margaret Hawkin has developed the most comprehensive advertising campaign platform for this
committee. If you are interested in helping in any capacity, we welcome your help.
The program for this year’s meetings has been finalized and it should provide inspiration for your current and future
projects. I’m definitely interested in hearing the advice of our first speaker, Elaine Theriault, on “Organizing Your
Studio” as I’ve just recently moved my working room from our dining table to an actual room dedicated to quilting.
For September’s meeting, bring along a snapshot or a picture of your quilting space for a show and share activity.
Bring your challenge questions and issues for Elaine.
I look forward to meeting each of you in person.

we have members that are
very sensitive to fragrance
and scents which can lead to
asthma attacks.

‘decluttering ‘ process. You will get some great tips to help get your room in order and how to keep it that way!!
Wow, Starting the year off with a well -organized studio would be awesome, wouldn’t it ??? Check out her blog cazyquilteronabike.blogspot.com .

‘Sources of Inspiration ‘- Tracey Lawko
Using slides as well as actual pieces, Tracey will reveal how her textile art has developed, inspired by childhood
interests and continual experimentation. An embroiderer, quilter, longarmer and textile artist, her work has been
juried into numerous national and international shows. Her finely stitched landscapes celebrate the beauty of rural
Ontario. Her dimensional still-lifes combine modern longarm stitching with traditional hand embroidery. As
Tracey presents her journey, she invites you to consider your own ‘Sources of Inspiration’.

Welcome Committee
It has come to our attention that we don’t always do a good job of recognizing life events
and outside recognitions of our members, so we are asking you to help us to do a better job.
Email our V.P. with any information that you think we should know about e.g. death of
family members, awards/recognitions received, special circumstances, etc.

Oxford Quilters’ Guild—Quilt Show
Mark your calenders! May 11, 12 & 13, 2017 is our bi-annual quilt show! We are
excited to feature Red & White quilts in the show to celebrate the Canadian
sesquicentennial year. The challenge for the show will be revealed at the September
meeting by Ann Thomas. The vendors have been arranged and committee members
are hoping to make this show a very memorable event. Please dig out those UFO’s
and get them completed for the show and get working on that “next project”.
Whether you are a beginner of advanced quilter – all quilts are welcome and will be
proudly displayed.
The committee is looking for someone to assist with the publicity for the show, and
if you would be interested in assisting, please contact Gwen Tracey.
