Dr. Walter L. Walker
WKNO is deeply saddened
by the recent passing of Dr.
Walter L. Walker. As a former
president of LeMoyne-Owen
College and a distinguished
member of the WKNO Board
of Trustees, Dr. Walker has
c o n t r i bu t e d m u c h t o t h e
Memphis community and
leaves behind a legacy of
f u r thering education and
awareness.
Gallery 10: The WKNO Art and Antiques Auction spanned
two weekends in November, raising more than $70,000 to help
WKNO continue providing quality television to its viewers in
Memphis and the surrounding areas. Up-and-coming artists,
like Gadsby Creson, Dwayne Butcher, Elizabeth Owen, Siphne
Sylve, and more, were highlighted during the Emerging Young
Artists segment.
Awards
The Mid-South Regional Emmy Award nominations were
announced and WKNO was honored to have received three
nominations: Pierre Kimsey, in the category of Sports Programs,
for Joe Scott: Memories of the Negro Leagues; Susan
Grissom, in the category of Documentary/Historical, for Call of
Duty: WWII in the Mid-South; and Russ Abernathy, Kip
Cole, Angela Dejong-Angelici, and Pierre Kimsey, in the category of Public Affairs, for It Matters: Are We Prepared?
Winners will be announced in January.
Memphis Parent readers were recently asked to vote on “Best

featuring music by Ensemble Galilei, A Universe of
Dreams is an extraordinary multi-media concert that evokes
all the wonder and mystery of the universe through dazzling
images from the Hubble Space Telescope, readings of
authors such as Mary Oliver and Isaac Asimov and music
from Ensemble Galilei that speaks to the heart in ways that
transcend mere language.
WKNO recently presented Senator Mark Norris with the
“Tennessee Legislator of the Year” for 2008. The Senator was
honored with this presentation for his help in securing state
appropriations for the six public television stations in
Tennessee and for being instrumental in getting the financial
support necessary for the Tennessee stations to complete their

So You Think You’re Ready for Digital Television?

As of January 1, 2009, there are now 48 days of analog broadcasting remaining. According to a recent article in Current
(October 14, 2008), people who are not aware at all of the digital television transition dropped from 60% in 2006 to 2% in
spring of 2008. That’s good news, but there are still a lot of misunderstandings about how one should be ready.
At WKNO, we have been highly engaged in the digital television education process. We have fielded hundreds of calls from
viewers and have found a few common beliefs from people who believe they are ready for digital, but may not be.
1. I have cable/satellite. I don’t need to do anything.
Is EVERY television set in your home hooked to your cable/satellite service? If not, you may need to do more. Also, I have
talked with some viewers who have satellite service, but watch their local channels over the air with an antenna. These
viewers may not be fully ready for digital television.
2. I have a new digital (or HD) television set.
Have you scanned in your digital channels (if you’re using an antenna)? If not, then you may be using your digital (or HD)
television to watch analog broadcasting.
3. I’ve got my converter box now but I don’t need to hook it up until February 17.
Digital broadcasting is on the air now. We advise viewers to hook up their converter boxes now as individual issues may
interfere with a good digital signal, which may then mean you need to do something more to be able to watch digital broadcasting.

For the past several years the WKNO Travel Auction has been presented online and on-air. This year’s
Travel Auction will be online only, without auctioneers or volunteers in the studio taking bids over the phone.
Bidding will take place at wkno.org beginning Monday, January 12 at 11:00 a.m. with packages closing on
Tuesday, January 27.
WKNO will present the travel packages that will be available for online bidding in television spots airing on
Channel 10, leading up to the day and times these items will close. Bidders will also be able to visit all of the
donor properties’ web sites from the Travel Auction site to learn more about each of the travel packages.
Bidders without access to a computer who would like to bid may call the Auction Office at 901-458-2521, no
later than noon on Friday, January 23. The callers will be registered for the online auction and a one-time,
maximum bid will be placed on the packages in which they are interested.

WKNO presents a new six-hour comedy epic showcasing the most hilarious men, women
and moments in American entertainment and why they made us laugh.
Make ‘Em Laugh: The Funny Business of America, premiering Wednesday, January 14
at 7:00 p.m. on WKNO, is hosted by funnyman Billy Crystal and narrated by Amy Sedaris.
This powerful new documentary explores the currents of American comedy throughout a
century of social and political change, illuminating how comedy has tackled and poked
fun at our political system, race relations, gender issues and the prevailing American
standards and taboos in everyday life.
Melding performance, biography and history, Make ‘Em Laugh features
interviews with more than 90 comedians, writers, producers and historians,
including Judd Apatow, Roseanne Barr, Anne Beatts, the Smothers Brothers, Carol
Burnett, Sid Caesar, George Carlin, Larry David, Will Ferrell, Leonard Maltin,
Cheech Marin, Steve Martin, Chris Rock, Mort Sahl, Dick Van Dyke and many,
many more.
Each one-hour episode focuses on a distinct genre of American comedy — from
the most ingenious physical schtick to fast-talking wiseguys to incisive satire
and parody — re-acquainting viewers with some of their favorite classics.

Join host Bonnie Kourvelas this month on Southern Routes for a journey back to the golden age of radio, a conversation
with author Jon Meacham, and more.
Today synthesizers and computers make audio production and elaborate sound effects as easy as pushing a button. However,
back when radio ruled the airwaves, when families kept their ears glued to their sets to hear the latest episode of “The
Shadow” or “Fibber McGee and Molly,” the sounds that brought the stories to life were all done manually — using
whatever tools and objects happened to be available, creating emotions out of thin air, eliciting dread, horror, sadness and
laughter from listeners. Chatterbox Audio Theater produces audio plays utilizing the same methods as the old time radio
masters. Producer Larry Dunn spent some time with this Memphis-based group and takes us inside a world created with
sound.
When asked to name his favorite President, Abraham Lincoln never hesitated. “Andrew
Jackson!” was his answer. It was Jackson, after all, who held the Union together long
before the Civil War. The man from Tennessee who was given the nickname of “Old
Hickory” never shied away from a fight. He once wrestled a would-be assassin to the
ground on the Capitol steps. Recently Producer Pierre Kimsey sat down with Pulitzer
Prize winning author Jon Meacham to discuss his new book about Jackson entitled
American Lion.

This monthly series, produced and hosted by Cris Hardaway, will
not only deliver valuable information but also include interviews
and advice from professionals in many different fields.
The Best Times, produced in cooperation with the monthly publication, premieres January 22 with a cover story on
“Surviving the Economic Storm”, giving information and insight into protecting the nest eggs of 50+ viewers. It will also
spotlight the digital television transition and feature an interview with Lester Gingold, editor of the publication The Best
Times.
The Best Times will premiere Thursday, January 22, at 7:30 p.m. It will repeat Saturday, January 24 at 3:00 p.m. and
Sunday, January 25 at 9:00 a.m. on WKNO. It also airs Saturday, January 24 at 8:30 p.m. on WKNO2.

a night of storytelling
On April 3, 2008, the National Civil Rights Museum held
a powerful and emotional evening of storytelling to honor
the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on the occasion
of the 40th anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination.
In collaboration with Harrah’s Entertainment and the
National Civil Rights Museum, WKNO will premiere a
television version of this compelling event on Thursday, January 22, at 9:00 p.m. to pay tribute to one of the greatest figures in the
nation’s civil rights movement. Production for this broadcast is sponsored by Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee.
In Remembrance There Is Life features interviews and biographical accounts from multiple nationally renowned speakers from
the Civil Rights Movement, several of whom intimately knew Dr. King. WKNO invites you to share in their experiences as we
look back upon the past forty years since King’s assassination through the eyes of those who lived and walked by his side.
Featured guests and storytellers will include one of the drafters of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, Clarence B. Jones; Myrlie
Evers-Williams, the first woman to chair the NAACP; Reverend C. T. Vivian, founder of the Nashville Christian Leadership
Conference; talk show host and Civil Rights organizer, Tony Brown; and many more. Reverend Billy Kyles will also recount the
last hour that he spent alongside Dr. King prior to his death.
In Remembrance There Is Life: A Night of Storytelling will premiere on Thursday, January 22 and Thursday, February 12, at
9:00 p.m. on WKNO/Channel 10. It will also air on Friday, January 23, and Friday, February 13 at 9:00 p.m. on WKNO2.

kno kids Is Turning on the Power with a New
The popular series that aired in the 1970s is coming back, in a new form. The
Electric Company aims to entertain children between the ages of 6 and 9 while
simultaneously teaching fundamental reading skills.
Like the original show, the series draws from pop culture — music, comedy,
technology and celebrities — to create a playful, hip, multi-media experience.
The series includes many modular elements: sketches, animations and songs.
The Electric Company itself is a group of friends from a New York neighborhood
bound by a love for language and sworn to do the right thing. They are the Fantastic
Four of Phonics, the Conquistadors of Connected Text, the Virtuosos of Vocabulary.
They will be called upon to solve problems that have been created by a naughty
group of neighborhood pranksters. In every instance, the Company prevails against
the pranksters by employing superior dexterity in the use of the words.
The problems and situations can be fantastical and the solutions may border the
ridiculous, but each episode will follow a psychedelic logic that is playful, funny and
musical. In fact, each episode is a little madcap musical comedy all its own.
The Electric Company will air Fridays at 4:00 p.m. beginning January 23. Don’t
miss a special marathon preview on Monday, January 19, 3:00 - 5:00 p.m., on ‘KNO
Kids/Channel 10.

on Saturday, Januar y 31 at
11:00 a.m. The team, comprised
of familiar faces and newcomers,
rigorously tests more than 50
new recipes to help chefs find
success in the kitchen.

decorating activities that are
