STORY OF
THE
IN
Youngstown State University’s penguin mascot
is the only one of its kind among Division I
Universities in the country. Why a penguin?
Prior to 1933, YSU did not have a mascot or
nickname for their athletic teams. On January
30, 1933, the men’s basketball team played
West Liberty in West Virginia. It was a cold night
and the roads had been hit with heavy snowfall.
Many of those traveling had to stop and push
vehicles out of snow drifts, so they were very
cold when they arrived. Team members were
stomping on the gym floor and waving their
arms around to warm up. Someone in the
crowd commented that they looked like a
bunch of penguins. The fans took a liking to the
penguin idea and the student body formally
accepted the name later that year.

MetroParks’ three lakes, offers 60
acres of open water and 40 acres of

Mill Creek MetroParks
Mill Creek MetroParks encompasses approximately 4,440
acres, 20 miles of drive and 15 miles of foot trails. Ranked
among the largest metropolitan-owned parks within the city
limits of any US city, Mill Creek MetroParks is a Youngstown
favorite. If you enjoy biking, take a quick ride on the East Golf
or East Cohasset Hike & Bike Trail. Both trails are 1.5-mile long
and are perfect for a mid-day ride. The 1.75-mile East Newport
Hike & Bike wraps around Lake Newport and provides
beautiful views of the Newport Wetlands and Daffodil Meadow.
Feeling adventurous? The MetroParks Bikeway is an 11-mile
paved trail that offers a variety of scenery to cyclists and
runners alike. If you’re going on-foot, the Mill Creek Preserve
has 2 miles of wetland and upland habitats to explore.
Stavich Bicycle Trail
Locals, especially those in training, favor the 12-mile Stavich
Bicycle Trail which starts in Struthers and runs all the way to
New Castle, PA. The trail is quite scenic and its continuous
rolling hills provide a good workout.
Boardman Park
Boardman Park occupies 227 acres of greenspace in the
heart of Boardman. Discover the beauty and diversity of the
park along the ADA-accessible North Trail via the Eisenhower
Branch. Constructed of asphalt pavement, the path offers a
smooth, peaceful experience totaling over 4 miles in length.

Local Favorites
Reasonably Flat 4.4mi Short Course
The 4.4 mile loop starts at the Newport Wetlands
and makes a counter clockwise loop (or clockwise
if you want to live life on the edge). The course
includes the cut-through trail that eliminates a busy
Sheban Dr. section. It’s a little shorter, but safer.
Hillier 10mi Long Course
This course takes in the hillier northernmost section
of Mill Creek MetroParks. Start at Newport Wetlands
and head north to Rt 62. Turn right across the
bridge, make a quick left at the light back into the
park, bear right on East Park Dr. and run the closedto-traffic section (1.8 miles gate to gate). Cross
Old Furnace Rd., run down Slippery Rock hill to
the Lake Glacier bridge, head left over the bridge,
then right along the lake to the Glacier boat docks.
Turn around at the stop sign and head back south
along the lake. Turn right at the Wall Garden near
Glacier bridge and follow it to the dividing sycamore
(Bears Den Dr. and West Dr.). Stay left, run around
the horseshoe bend back to Old Furnace Rd.,
cross Old Furnace and head down the staircase
along Lake Cohasset. Bear right up Big Bear hill,
turn left at Scholl recreation area, run down the hill
toward Chestnut Hill pavilion and continue to cross
Rt 62. Run the 1.5 miles back to Newport Wetlands.

Youngstown makes pizza like

owners share their favorites...
It’s a white pizza that does not
taste like a white pizza. It is the
perfect combination of meat
and veggies, and the way the
toppings are layered on it makes
it almost taste like there is still
sauce. It is one of our most
popular pizzas - and it’s also my
father’s favorite!
Filomena Riccioni (founder’s
daughter), Wedgewood Pizza
The Spinach and Tomato Pizza
It all starts with our dough made
fresh daily. It’s brushed with oil
and garlic, layered with spinach
and fresh-cut local tomatoes in
season, smothered with cheese
and most importantly, baked to
perfection!

SPORTS
What are some local spots to
play or watch sports?
Mahoning County offers
tremendous facilities for all levels
of sports. From Youngstown
State’s Stambaugh Stadium, one
of the best at their level in college
football, to high school stadiums
featuring state-of-the-art video
boards. In the spring and
summer, there is no better facility
than the Bob Cene Baseball
Complex, featuring three “major
league dimensional” diamonds
for play during the day and night.
Dana Balash, Sports Director

I relocated to Mahoning County
this past summer and love the

place to watch a game, get a cold

I enjoy golfing at Mill Creek Golf

ABOUT THE FUTURE OF YOUNGSTOWN
The “reinvention” of Youngstown creates an energy level
that encourages our graduates to pursue their careers in the
Mahoning Valley. The quality of professional opportunities and
the quality of life drive a successful future. Our entrepreneurial
climate, the diversification of our economy, the expansion
of global markets and our vibrant arts community make
Youngstown a great place to build a career, raise a family and
pursue your dreams.
Dean Betty Jo Licata, Williamson College of Business
Administration, Youngstown State University
Come to Youngstown and enjoy world-class entertainment
at the Covelli Centre, the DeYor Performing Arts Center and
Stambaugh Auditorium. Here in YOUngstown, you can set
your own stage, control your own destiny and create your own
YOUngstown. We’re defining what Youngstown means to its own
residents and to the rest of the country as well.
Mayor John McNally

22 | www.youngstownlive.com
The future of Youngstown resembles its industrious past, though
not with steel and smoke that folks often associate Youngstown.
Rather, Youngstown is strategically reintroducing itself as a hub
for education, technology, advanced manufacturing, innovative
research and intentional investment in our quality of life indicators
such as recreation, preservation and modern housing. These are
the same entrepreneurial and innovative approaches that have
always enabled Youngstown to punch above its weight class
and compete. The authenticity and resiliency of Youngstown’s
people that never left, combined with the tenacity and resurgence
of leaders and “doers” that are coming back and choosing
Youngstown, makes the future a place worth working towards.
Dominic C. Marchionda, NYO Property Group
Mahoning County is moving forward focusing on initiatives to
rebuild not only Youngstown but all townships, villages and
cities. We are a county on the move with great things happening.
Youngstown, being the hub of our county, has been reborn with
everything happening from entertainment to new, innovative
state-of-the-art business creation.
