he Great War should of course be commemorated, but memories of this conflict
should also provide an opportunity for reflection.
The Veneto Region and in particular the Dolomites were the theatre for some of the
many horrifying, tragic events that marked the Great War.
The Dolomite front played a major part in hostilities as evidenced by the battlefields,
fortifications, cemeteries, monuments and memorials in these sites of historic interest that trace the seemingly endless 29 months of conflict for Italy, rendering the
stupendous landscape of these mountains even more atmospheric, offering visitors
a unique opportunity to observe, ponder and learn.

he tourism consortia Asiago 7 Comuni, Belle Dolomiti, Marca Treviso
and Vicenza have banded together to form a specialpurpose organisation whose aim is to design, coordinate
and manage the project “Great War Tours - Journeys in
History”.
As part of this project, the Consorzio Dolomiti, using the 3D
RTE platform, has mapped out some itineraries enabling
visitors to discover those places that symbolise these momentous events, places laden with historic and emotional
significance. The list of tours includes some designed for
families with children while others focus on the literature
generated by the many writers who so movingly related
those troubled times.
In addition, many local hotels, restaurants and other service providers have got together to form a “club” with the
specific brief of creating special visitor packages and then
communicating, promoting and marketing these to the
tourist industry and the public.
Thus the Great War becomes not only a major historical
landmark to remember and upon which to reflect but it
also provides yet another reason to experience the umpteen
natural wonders of that unique landscape that is the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site, in all its seasonal guises.
