New this year, Ocee ES has set up the Ocee
Otter STEAM Lab. STEAM stands for
“Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and
Math.” Classes will be held every
Wednesday, with grade levels rotating
through about once every six weeks. The
STEAM lab facilitator is Ms. Ann Scott Hanks,
one of the teachers in our Talented and
Gifted program. Her lessons will incorporate each grade level’s
science/math standards and art standards, as well as standards
from the Talented and Gifted Program, including higher-order
thinking skills, creative problem-solving skills, and research
skills. The STEAM lab will be focused on inquiry-based learning
where the instructor starts by posing questions, problems or
scenarios rather than simply presenting facts or structured
information. Check out the STEAM website for a list of possible
topics, as well as links to many resource ideas that parents can
use to provide enrichment at home: http://

Debbie Pernice

Walk and Roll to School and Honor
American Heroes
Tomorrow is Walk and Roll to School Day! In
an effort to remember those American
patriots who have made great sacrifices for
our citizens in the past and those
who continue to support our
country every day, students and
adults are encouraged to wear
their Scout uniforms or red, white,
and blue as they conserve energy
by walking or “rolling” to school.
Thank You to Hearing and Vision Screening Volunteers
We want to thank Anna Needle and Rita Bechara, who spearheaded the
PTA’s efforts to support our Hearing and Vision screenings. Anna and
Rita rounded up volunteers, placed them into key roles, communicated
with them about details, and helped to coordinate who went where for our
screening day. We also want to thank Rachel Biller, who was following
up until the night before to ensure we had enough volunteers. Along with
Anna and Rita, we appreciate the following parents who volunteered a
morning of their time to come and help screen our first, third, and fifth
graders: Elizabeth Connolly, Scarlett Khoury, Tommy Thornton, Kelli
Maslova, Lauren Kemp, Magdalena Salameh, Joni Armbruster, Neal
Moro, Jill Volpe, Farinaz Salooti Hooshiani, and Robyn Sullivan. What you do makes such a difference
in the lives of children—thank you, thank you, thank you! We also want to thank our staff members
who added this event into their otherwise busy jobs: Rose Moro (our cluster nurse, who trained
everyone and even brought her husband to help!), Connie Harwood, Stella Brantley, Lauren Williams,
Lisa Scholberg, Fayth Kleg, Jenny Barnes, Linda Stein, and Jo Fowler. Thanks for all you do!
Career Day
The Georgia Department of Education has instituted a
comprehensive career development plan for all students. This
new plan will allow students the opportunity to learn about
Georgia's Seventeen (17) Career Clusters. Career Day provides
students with the opportunity to think about the concept of work/
vocation and the numerous work opportunities available in the
future. In order to expose students to the career world, Ocee
Elementary School is excited to announce Career Day for
students in grades 1 & 2 is on Thursday, October 29,
2015. Career Day for grades 3-5 will take place in the spring
(Wednesday, March 9th). Please be on the lookout for more information in your child's Thursday papers
on September 17th. If you or someone you know would be interested in participating in Career Day,
please have them contact Mrs. Aronowitz - [email protected].
