Kaytek the Wizard
Kaytek, a mischievous schoolboy, is surprised to discover that he is able
to perform magic spells and change reality. He begins to lead a double life
as a powerful wizard in the dress of an ordinary boy. Kaytek has great fun
using magic to cause strange incidents in his school and neighborhood, but
soon his increasing powers cause major chaos around the city of Warsaw.
Disillusioned, he leaves the country and wanders the world searching for the
meaning of his unique abilities and their consequences. Centering around the
idea that with power comes responsibility, this story speaks to the childhood
dream of freeing oneself from the control of adults, and shaping the world
to one’s own designs.
Korczak
Janusz Korczak (1878-1942) was a Polish pediatrician and child
psychologist who famously ran a Warsaw orphanage on innovative
educational principles. Korczak left behind an extensive written legacy. His
works include books on education, plays, and essays, in addition to his classic
King Matt the First and other novels for children. The Polish Parliament has
declared 2012 as The Year of Janusz Korczak, marking the 70th anniversary
of his death in the Holocaust and the 100th anniversary of the founding of
his orphanage for Polish Jewish children.
