Classroom Updates
ALL ABOUT ME THEME
One of the themes in August was All About Me. This educational theme enhances learning and
encourages self-awareness. At Tedako Preschool, teachers’ meaningfully integrate the arts into
children’s learning experiences. The children really enjoyed creating things out of their own image and
likeness and can also recognize each other in their art. Check out the art that was created during our
All about me theme and is currently displayed in the classrooms.
KUGANI and SHINKA children made their
3D self-portrait for the ALL About Me
theme! First, Shizuka Sensei asked the
children what their face parts are and
then they cut the circle for the face
and glued it on a piece of paper. Next,
they drew their faces while looking at the
mirror. After they drew their faces, they
added hair with yarn which they
chose. The next day, the children
measured each other's heights with yarn
and taped it on their own 3D self-portrait.
Shizuka Sensei hung them on the wall at
their heights. They loved comparing each
other's heights and looking to see how
different their faces are.
For the NUUJI Class, Akia Sensei wanted
to design an activity that she could build
on. The first part was tracing the
children. Once she hung up their
silhouettes at eye level, right away, the
children compared the sizes of
them. Next, they could draw on them
anyway the wanted to decorate it. She
wanted to add more “favorite things”
such as favorite foods. Children drew a
picture of their favorite food and were
asked to post it on their
silhouettes. Many children had
interesting logic, they place the drawing
of their favorite food on their stomach,
because that is where the food goes once
eaten!

FALL 2016
Once the KANASAN’s All About Me
Art was complete and hung on the
wall the children were really
excited and enjoyed looking at
what they helped create. The
children first stamped his or her
hands and feet, then they painted a
body. They really enjoyed this as a
sensory activity! Teachers then
took pictures of the children, cut
the faces out, cut the painted body
and stamped hands and feet and
put all the pieces together.
YUI class teacher, Ryoko’s
inspiration for the All About Me
activity for her class came from the
traditional Japanese New Year
Game called Fukuwari. In this
game, face pieces are arranged in
funny ways on a blank face. Ryoko
took pictures of the children and
cut out their eyes, nose and mouth
for them to place onto a blank
face. They children did not
recognize their own face parts, but
they are still wonderful works of
art.
You can see many toddler silhouettes
high above the CHURASAN
classroom. Teachers traced each child
individually and were impressed with
the variety of poses and how the
children understood that they needed
to be still. After this activity, the
children loved to be traced and asked
many times using chalk while playing
outside. In the second part of this art
project, the children could decorate
their bodies. Finally, Kanako put their
names on the art and hung them up
on display. They cannot read yet, but
the children in this class know the first
letter of each of their classmates, so
they can tell you who’s body you are
looking at.

FALL 2016
As KUKURU Class babies become mobile, children
become very interested in exploring. They investigate
everything they can get their hands on. This desire to
explore and play motivates the babies to move by
scooting, crawling, and even walk to what they are
interested in.
In a group setting YOUNG KUKURU Class
infants like to watch other babies and older
children. They get excited when they can be part
of the action too!
