Help Support Riverside Students!!
Parents of 6 grade students please be aware that a new immunization requirement went into place at the start of the 2013-14 school
year. A Tdap immunization (tetanus and pertussis) is now required
BEFORE the first day of a student’s 7th grade school year. The Tdap
immunization must have been after the child’s 7th birthday and before they start 7th grade. Following is an excerpt from a letter from
the Iowa Department of Public Health:
The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), Bureau of Immunization, has completed
the administrative rules process to require tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap)
vaccine for students enrolling in 7th grade. The administrative rule change is effective
January 16, 2013, and will be implemented at the beginning of the upcoming 2013-2014
school year. The change will require a one-time booster dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis-containing vaccine for applicants in grades 7
and above, if born on or after September 15, 2000; regardless of the interval
since the last tetanus/diphtheria containing vaccine.
Please send documentation of a Tdap immunization to Mrs. Palmer
as soon as possible. If you are unsure if your child has already met
this requirement please contact Mrs. Palmer by phone or email
([email protected]).
Riverside Fashion Students Explore Business Opportunities
Members of the Mrs. Bentley’s Fashion class have started a business called the
Riverside Closet Exchange for the high school students at Riverside. We have
included the classes brochure:
Donkey Basketball is coming to Riverside on March 21, 2014. Stay tuned
for details. This event is sponsored
by the Riverside Booster Club.

Yearbook News 2014 Jr. Sr. High Yearbooks Go On Sale
The 2014 yearbook staff continues to finish its ad sales and is gearing up for book sales. We have completed the design for the cover. The 2014 book is
emphasizing that this book is a 20th anniversary edition because the first Riverside yearbook was published in 1994. We plan to feature photos from the
past 20 years of Riverside as well as the current events at Riverside Jr.-Sr. High School. The junior high students and their activities will be included
in this book. The book is delivered in the fall usually during the month of September.
Books will go on sale February 3rd and will continue to be for sale until March 3. Books may be purchased through the staff at school or online
at www.yearbooksforever.com. We have decided to keep the cost at $45. Stay tuned for more details. If we missed any business that would still like
to purchase an ad in the yearbook, please contact Mrs. Stempel at Riverside Jr.-Sr. Riverside High School or email her at [email protected].
Mrs. Stempel is the yearbook sponsor. The Riverside communities have always been a great supporter of the yearbook and we thank you very much.
Dance Team Show
Riverside Girls Track Preview
(Hannah Henderson)
The Riverside Dance
team has a dance
show every year to
raise money for the
next year’s expenses.
The show includes all
the teams’ dances
from that year, the
Kids camp performs,
and they may have
other schools come
perform, too. They
even include other
fun dances that they don’t perform at basketball games!
Bonni Hering, the dance coach, says that the dance team has worked very hard this
year and wants everyone to come cheer them on! The theme for this year’s show
has not been decided on, but they have quite a few ideas! The show will be March
8th at 7 pm. The Kids camp will begin at 10 a.m. and go till 3p.m. on March 8th as
well (prices later to come). The Kids camp is for kids in pre-K all the way up to 8th
grade. This is a great opportunity for the kids to see if they want to try out in high
school! If there are any relatives or friends in another school district that would like
to join, feel free to take an extra form and have them join the fun!
Last year the team invited the IWCC Dance Team to come perform. It should be
interesting to see who will be invited to perform this year. The team does a lot of
dances at the show. A few crowd favorites are the bag routine, guys routine, and
light routine. The show is jam packed with awesome dances and is definitely worth
coming to! It will also be the two seniors on the teams’ senior night, Reagan Gaynor
and Tiffany Wichert. So, please come out and support the dance team! It is their
one big fundraiser and they worked very hard for this! The prices to enter will be
$3 for students $5 for adults.
(Taylor Frain)
Track season it just around the corner! Doing track is tough work, but it puts people into
shape. With new drills and technique this year the Riverside Girl's Track will be unstoppable.
However, there are some conference teams who will not go down without a fight. Griswold's
Rebekah Topham will be a strong competitor in the distance races while Tri-Center will be
tough in the sprints.
On this year's team the coaches are looking at Bailey McCready, Sheyenne Smith, Tiffany
Wichert, Grace Gleaves, Alexa Wilber, and Taylor Frain to all help lead the team to victory.
Each of these girls has witnessed what it is like to go to the State Tournament. They know what
it takes, and they will push the younger girls to do their best to reach their goals.
“We welcome anyone and everyone. We will work hard and put you into shape, according to
your body shape,” commented, girl's track coach, Steve Allen. “We are going to push individuals
to their potential. By doing this, years down the road the students will be able to say they accomplished something that is difficult and will think it easy to do when they are older.”
Riverside Girl's Track team is look at returning events to state, and they will put on some great
races for everyone in the stands. Come on out to support the girls, and see if some records will
be broken!
For more information please contact: Liz Graves: [email protected] Casey

Senior Portfolios
(Trae Kelly)
Senior portfolios are a required assignment for the entire graduating class. This gives the seniors
a chance to have all their information in order for colleges or possible employment after high
school. The portfolios are due on May 8th. This should not be that difficult due to the fact that
Mrs. Hardy and Ms. Sturm are giving class time for those who are taking an English class to
work on the portfolio. The others must find their own time to finish it, but Mrs. Hardy and Ms.
Sturm are willing to help. The portfolios consist of a collection of samples of the student's best
work along with important documents such as a resume, a sample cover letter, and two written
references. They have different choices of formatting the portfolios such as: a hard copy version
in a binder, an electronic folder of documents, or a password-protected website. Mrs. Hardy
would like to say to all the students especially the upcoming seniors that although some students think of the portfolio as just "more work," that is not the aim. As seniors create their
portfolios, they have an opportunity to practice the essential skills involved in showing the
world, on paper and in person, who they are, what they can do, and why they deserve a helping
hand to succeed in whatever comes next.
Seniors, The yearbook is in need of your senior pictures!!
See Mrs. Stempel if you have some concerns.
News From Mr. Meek at Riverside Elementary
Did you know that our school buildings get used on a regular basis by the community? We
always try and bring people and groups into our building to see what is happening in our
schools and one of the best ways to do that is to get groups into the building for their activities and then let them see all the great things happening in the school. Look at everything
that happens at our schools that is not a school function:
Riverside Youth Sports Basketball (6 Teams), Volleyball (3 teams), and Indoor Soccer at
all of the schools
Riverside Youth Sports holds monthly meetings at the Intermediate school
A Basketball tournament sponsored by the Riverside Optimists Club at the intermediate school
A Select Football team uses the area behind the Intermediate school
Select Basketball teams (2 Teams) at the Intermediate and Jr./Sr. high schools
A local fitness group (6 times a week) at the Intermediate and Elementary schools
A local Republican event will be at the Elementary school this year
Bountiful Baskets, a local food cooperative, distributes from the Intermediate school
The Riverside Booster club holds a monthly meeting at the Intermediate school
4-H groups - K-3 Clover Kids (2 groups), Lego League
Faith and Fitness, elementary students, from the Carson Methodists Church meets
monthly at the Elementary school
The Post Prom committee is meeting to get prom in order for this year
If you add in the school’s activities: sports, musicals, band performances, speech, student
councils, cheerleading, and some that I cannot think of, the schools are busy all the time. We
are very happy to have our schools be used with our community events so that we can have
so many option for our students and families.
The Principal’s Cabinet will be sponsoring its annual Donuts for Dads. It slated
for Wednesday February 26, 2014 at the Elementary school from 6:30 AM to 8:00
AM. This is a great time for students and their families to come see all the great things happening at our school.
Students are reading more and more and if you get a chance look at the AR board and look
at all the students who are working hard on reading and then taking comprehension assessments over their books. It is a fun thing to see around the school when student see their
picture on the board and then tell you that they have been moving up the boards with more
points.
News from the Library
(Callie Kallsen)
The Riverside Elementary School and Riverside Intermediate Libraries will be hosting Scholastic Book
Fairs February 24th-27th, during Parent-Teacher conferences. Hosting Scholastic Book Fairs allows our libraries
to earn books to add to our collections. Please come and
support your child's school library by visiting the book fair
during parent-teacher conferences.
Please not wait until the February Parent-Teacher conferences to ask questions about your
child’s progress in academics or maybe some behaviors that you are seeing at home that
might be occurring at school. For 4th-6th grade students you can see grades as they are
entered into our system via the JMC Parent Access portal at, https://
riversideschools.onlinejmc.com/, click on the Parent icon, enter your username and password
and you can see grades. The more staff and families that are on the same page, the more
successful a student will be.

Riverside Links Seeks Works for a Community Creative Writing Book
This year Riverside Links will publish a creative writing book of work collected by classroom
teachers. Entries are due to Gayle Strickland on Feb. 1, 2014. A group of editors will select
poetry, essays, or short stories to include. Riverside Links also invites adult writers to submit work. Every person who is published will receive a book, and other copies will be on
display at various businesses in the three communities. Additional copies will be for sale.
Writing Workshop To Be Held in March
The second activity is a Writing Workshop to be held at Eckles Memorial Library. Students in grades 2-6 will meet on three consecutive Saturdays: March 15,22,28. If
there is sufficient interest, a middle school group will meet at the same time.
Writers will develop their own story to illustrate and have published. Older writers may
prefer to concentrate on the text rather than illustrations. Books will be available for purchase at Oakland’s Fourth of July Celebration, the Carson Rodeo, and Donia Days. Writers
will participate in book signings at those events.
There will be a $5 fee for the workshop which includes a copy of the final book for each
participant. See Patrice Vance at the library to apply for the workshop, pay the fee, or check
on scholarships available. Additional forms are available at riversidelinks.com which should be
presented at Eckles Library or at the Macedonia, Carson, or Oakland city halls.
Participation is limited to fifteen (15) writers, so apply early. We will accept applications through March 1.

My Dream. . .

Parents of Seniors: Good News. . We will have FAFSA day
at Riverside. See letter below!!! Please call guidance office to
set up an appointment to meet with FAFSA personnel.
January 14th, 2014
Dear Senior Parent:
I would like to invite you to participate in our Free Fill-Out the FAFSA Day at
Riverside High School. The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is
the form needed by every college/technical school, and some scholarships, before financial aid can be given. A representative from the College Planning Center in Des Moines will be at the high school Monday, February 17th from
10am to about 7:00 PM. He is trained to be an expert in filling out the FAFSA and answering your financial aid questions. The representative will help
students and parents file their FAFSA forms electronically over the Internet.
Each appointment will last about 30 minutes. The representative will be in the
On-Line Study Hall located on the lower floor of the high school. If the financial aid priority date of your student’s college(s) is earlier than February 17 th,
you will want to complete the FAFSA on your own before the priority date.
If you would like to take part in FAFSA Day, please fill out the enclosed sheet and return it to me by February 7th . The guidance office
will notify you on or before February 12th of your appointment time
and materials to bring to that appointment. If you complete your
2013 tax form by February 17th it would be helpful, but it is not required. You can do an estimate of your income to file the FAFSA; however,
some colleges will require your actual tax results before giving a final award
letter.
I hope that having a Fill-Out Your FAFSA Day will be helpful to many of you.
Sincerely,
Chris Conover

Scholarship Opportunity for Seniors Sara Wede
A great scholarship opportunity has arrived for Seniors! The Riverside Optimist
Essay Scholarship is being offered again this year, with the topic of “How Dreams Lead to
Success”. The winner of this scholarship receives $500 at Senior Night. The essay has to be
between 700-800 words, not including the title, footnotes, and bibliography; the essay is due
by April 1, 2014.
There are a few rules about how to write the essay:
1.
Each entry must begin with a title page containing a topic, number of words, writer’s name, address, phone number, name of school, and the date of birth.
2.
At the top of the first page, there should be the official topic, and the number of
words. There is a penalty for lack of the topic and failure to identify the total number of words correctly.
3.
Essays must be typed and double-spaced.
4.
Hyphenated words count as only one word. There will be a deduction for every 25
words over or under the given limit.
5.
Each page of the essay must be numbered starting with page 1, not the title page.
the numbers must be centered at the bottom of each page.
6.
Any quotations or copyrighted material used in the essay must be identified
properly. Failure to identify non-original material will result in disqualification.
7.
No reference must be made in the essay that identifies the student or parents.
8.
The entry must be stapled together in the upper left-hand corner. Covers of any
type are not accepted.
This is a great opportunity to all of this year’s Seniors! Remember, the topic is “How
Dreams Lead to Success” and it is due by April 1st. If you have any other questions or concerns, you may E-mail ReAnn Hildebrand at [email protected].
Gute News From the Junior-Senior High School
On January 3rd, most of the K-12 teachers at Riverside gave up a workday to attend professional development training on a student progress tracking program. This program can help
teachers track students’ progress on the Iowa Core Standards that the teachers are using to
drive the learning in their classroom. This new program is called Mastery Connect and many
of the teachers have already used it in their classrooms. Ms. Robin Daugherty from Mastery
Connect conducted the training. It took most of the day on the January 3rd for the teachers
to set up their accounts and begin to explore or create assessments they could use for their
classrooms. On January 22nd we used the time during our early dismissal time for teachers
to have more time to set up their accounts. The ultimate goal with this new technology for
the teachers is to try and make sure your student is learning the standards the teacher is
expecting them to learn.
Iowa Student Loan Scholarship Opportunity
By: Mandie Reynolds
Iowa Student Loan has launched a new scholarship for Iowa high school seniors, and
three Riverside students have qualified as some of the highest achieving students.
High school seniors were given the opportunity to take an online test of financial literacy
skills and those who achieved the highest scores are entered into a drawing for 20
$1,500 scholarships from Iowa Student Loan. All seniors at Riverside took the test in
early December.
Three Riverside students, Tom Peterson, Austin Morrisson, and Brian Gordon scored
high on the test are candidates for a $1,500 scholarship that will be awarded to 20 Iowa
high school students. We will find out at a later date if these boys were lucky enough to
win one of the scholarships!
Good luck boys and great
job!

Junior High To Study Olympics (Callie Kallsen)
The Jr. High teachers will be doing a mini cross-curricular unit over
the Olympics. The 7th and 8th grade students will be studying the
Olympics in all of their core classes: Science, History, Math, English,
and Reading. This will be a great opportunity for students to learn
more about the Olympics and it is also exciting for the core teachers
to have the chance to collaborate.
Our winter activity seasons will be wrapping up at the end of February/first of March. If you
haven’t had an opportunity to come out and support our students, we do have several home
events at the start of February for you to attend.
Please remember that parent-teacher conferences will be held from 4pm to 8 pm on both
Monday, February 24 and Thursday, February 27.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call.

Keep These Dates in Mind:
The ice skating and bowling field trips for the intermediate
school students have been set for the following dates:
6th grade January 31, 5th grade February 7 and 4th
grade February 12
This unit is part of their physical education class.
Did you know that our school buildings get used on a regular basis by the community? We always try and
bring people and groups into our building to see what is happening in our schools and one of the best ways to
do that is to get groups into the building for their activities and then let them see all the great things happening
in the school. Look at everything that happens at our schools that is not a school function:
Riverside Youth Sports Basketball (6 Teams), Volleyball (3 teams), and Indoor Soccer at all of the schools
Faith and Fitness, elementary students, from the Carson Methodists Church meets monthly at the Elementary school
The Post Prom committee is meeting to get prom in order for this year
If you add in the school’s activities: sports, musicals, band performances, speech, student councils, cheerleading, and some that I cannot think of, the schools are busy all the time. We are very happy to have our schools
be used with our community events so that we can have so many option for our students and families.
With the melting snow comes, the appearance of trash around our communities. It magically appears around
our schools also so we try and take some time and clean up around the school and the blocks that are around
us to help keep our campus and the area around it. The 5th grade went out recently and cleaned a little
around Carson and the 6th grade now has adopted Highway 59 from the cemetery, north 2 miles as their
community project. We will also be looking to clean up our courtyard and get rid of the weeds, random bushes, and other vegetation and get it clean up so we can use it as an outdoor classroom. The front of our school
has a Rain Garden that we will be replanting and cleaning up to help match the great vegetation we put around
the main entrance of the building last year.
Please not wait until the February Parent-Teacher conferences to ask questions about your child’s progress in
academics or maybe some behaviors that you are seeing at home that might be occurring at school. For 4th6th grade students you can see grades as they are entered into our system via the JMC Parent Access portal at,
https://riversideschools.onlinejmc.com/, click on the Parent icon, enter your username and password and you
can see grades. The more staff and families that are on the same page, the more successful a student will be.
Riverside 5th Graders Do Community Service
The Riverside 5th graders participated in the school-wide community service project for the month of December. Mr. Bluml and Mrs. Stott's classes decided to pick up the streets of Carson as their project. The
students were tired of seeing trash in their town, on the street, in the alleys, and around the school. Students
were put into four different groups and sent to the north, south, east, and west sides of Carson to pick up
trash.
The community service project went hand-in-hand with OLWEUS, the school's bullying prevention program.
The students worked together, putting aside their differences, for the betterment of the community in which
they live and go to school.
As a reward for going over top of their food drive goal, Dr.
Sutton (left) and Principal Mr. Meek (right in apron) served
lunch to intermediate students.

District News from the Superintendent
By James Sutton, Ed.D.
The latest news on the new building.
Our new assessed valuation numbers came out this week. Our overall valuations increased from $331 million to $345 million (with gas and electric) which is an
increase of 4.22%. Our bondsman from Piper Jaffray was pleased with the numbers. This puts us on track with our estimates we made during the campaign and will
not be a deterrent when it comes to generating the $15.15 million we hoped to get from the bonds. Our next hurdle will be the next sale of bonds. We will sell
about $8 million on February 24th. The interest rates remain fairly low. By selling another $8 million, we will leave about $3.25 million left for the following calendar
year and will allow another increase in valuation to happen. I have a lot of confidence in Piper Jaffray and believe if anyone can make sure we get every possible dime
for the new building, they will.
I’ve been talking with DLR multiple times over the break and since we’ve returned. They wish to put plans out to bidders on February 6th. We are dealing with details daily --- auditorium curtains, technology details, etc. We will have bids for the building returned in March and will start to see physical progress before long.
Safe room grant
The safe room grant continues to progress, and the lady that has been providing me with directions from Des Moines is pleased with where we are on it. It is hard
to get a number from the feds about what FEMA will provide if the grant goes through. In a perfect world, FEMA should provide 75%, the state provide 10% and the
other 15% coming from us. But the FEMA rep continues to say they don’t have much money, so it will be less than that. When asked for a number, even ballpark,
she’s hesitant to commit.
Entry to the new building
We continue to make progress on finalizing the entry to the new building. I continue to be thankful for the great cooperation from the transportation department
and everyone who has been involved in helping us to make the main entry the absolute safest it can be for our students and stakeholders. It is going to be even better than we had hoped during the campaign.
Other news
Believe it or not, there are other things happening in the district.
I visited at the Farm Bureau group at their monthly meeting (at their request). The session was basically to talk about progress of the new building, but we also
talked about realignment of the buildings, enrollment, and what went into the tax rates. It was nice of them to ask me to attend, and I told them I would be happy to
return any time. I am happy to visit with any of our local groups or organizations to talk about Riverside and the latest news. Just give me a ring.
We have several teachers who have made their retirement official recently. Mr. Washburn will be retiring after six years with Riverside and decades in the teaching
profession. Mrs. Wax, who has taught health and physical education at Riverside for many years, will make this one her last year as a teacher. And Mrs. Elliott, who
is currently teaching kindergarten but has taught at the middle school as well, will be retiring at the end of the year. It is tough to find the words of gratitude for
folks who have given their lives to give our children the hope of a better tomorrow and especially for those that have made the Riverside area a part of their lives,
making our communities better as well as our schools.
Large Group Speech competed on Saturday, January 25. Stay tuned for results!!!
