Festival’s 2015 Quilt Show
features appliquéd quilts
The 41st Appalachian Treasures Quilt Show
(ATQS) in conjunction with the Arts and Crafts
Fair will be held at the Beckley-Raleigh County
Convention Center Aug. 28-30.
The goal of the Appalachian Treasures Quilt
Show is to showcase the traditional art of quilting
and provide educational programs dealing with all
aspects of the traditional art of quilting.
This year’s show theme category will feature
appliquéd quilts that are constructed by hand or
machine. At various times throughout the three
day event, quilters will demonstrate various techniques of appliqué that they like and have mastered.
The color to be featured this year is turquoise.
All quilts with turquoise fabric in them will be
considered for this award based upon use of the
color, design and construction techniques.
Each year quilters are encouraged to submit
a “story” about each quilted item entered in the
quilt show. This documentation could include
motivation for quilt, source of fabric (if historical),

photographs and mining memorabilia can be
found on the second floor of the General Store.
The main attraction is the underground

parents and Make-N-Take a traditional craft.
Also, featured at the Youth Museum (which
opens Aug. 24) is an “I Feel” exhibit. It is based
on The Way I Feel Book Series written by Cornelia Maude Spelman.
This exhibit fulfills an important need in the
community by helping young children recognize
and cope with their feelings, and by helping
parents and caregivers better understand the
inner emotional life of children. By initiating
parent-child dialogue about feelings, this exhibit
helps parents and children develop a vocabulary
to identify, describe, understand and manage
their emotions. Professional educators can use
this exhibit to generate discussion to facilitate
this learning.
Visitors may also tour the restored Coal Camp
featuring the Helen School, the Superintendent’s
House, the Miner’s Shanty, the Miner’s House
and the Pemberton Church.
The mine is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

a museum in 1987. It has been operated by the City of Beckley
since 1993. The Wildwood Advisory Council, along with the Raleigh County Historical Society, conducts tours of the museum. If
