The fact that this is the 51st year for this event is a testament to the work by the Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce and vendors selected to display their crafts. I hope you will thoroughly enjoy the works of art provided by the exhibitors from all across the O’Brien State as well as our Appalachian entertainment and exceptional hospitality. There will be crafts, artists, quilts and a quilters country store, food, fun and entertainment for the whole family. 51st Arts, Crafts Festival offers fun, entertainment for everyone Come join us for the 51st annual Appalachian Arts and Crafts Festival Aug. 28 to Aug. 30 at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center (formerly the Armory), 200 Armory Drive, Beckley. There will be crafts, artists, quilts and a quilters country store, food, fun and entertainment for the whole family. For those who want to get a jump start on their Christmas shopping, this fair is the place to be. Arts and Crafts, Fridays in the Park entertainment schedule • Friday: 1:30 p.m. — Lost Cannon Bluegrass Band will perform on Friday, Aug. 28. They will appear at two locations on Friday: Fridays in the Park at 11:30 a.m. and again at the Arts and Crafts beginning at 1:30 p.m. • Friday: 3 p.m. — Shane Ingram & Friends will perform bluegrass and folk music. They will appear at two locations on Friday: Fridays in the Park at 12:20 p.m. and again at the Arts and Crafts beginning at 3 p.m. • Friday: 4: p.m. — Beyond Therapy will perform beginning at 4 p.m. • Saturday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. — The Lilly Mountaineers will entertain visitors at the Arts and Crafts Show Aug. 28 from 1 to 5 p.m. • Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. — The Lilly Mountaineers will entertain visitors Aug. 30 from noon to 4 p.m. ••• Convention center doors open Friday, Aug. 28 and Saturday, Aug. 29, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 30, from noon to 6 p.m. More than 100 exhibitors will display, demonstrate and sell their handcrafted treasures. As part of the Appalachian Festival, Tamarack artisans will demonstrate how they make their products starting Friday, Aug. 28 through Sunday, Aug. 30 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each Schaerer day. Basket maker Elaine Sinclair, who has been working with Tamarack for three years, will be weaving her beautiful baskets. Marty Schaerer will be creating her lovely, original jewelry designs in many different styles. On Aug. 29, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., strolling musician John Wyatt of Rainelle will be telling stories and singing songs of the mountain state. We will wrap up the weekend with Tamarack’s Sunday@Two featuring The Poor Tators performing Rock-’n-Roll with a Banjo on stage at the Governor Hulett C. Smith Theater. Poet’s Cafe As part of the Appalachian Festival, the Beckley Art Group will host a “Poets’ Café on Friday August 28, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Cynthia Bickey Art Gallery. The event is an informal gathering that brings together live music, storytelling, and spoken-word poetry surrounded by local fine arts and fine crafts in a beautiful gallery setting. On Aug. 29, the Beckley Art Group will demonstrate yarn bombing throughout the day. The gallery will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. AppalachianFestival2015 www.register-herald.com 3 ‘Tweet All About It’ Festival’s 2015 Quilt Show features appliquéd quilts The 41st Appalachian Treasures Quilt Show (ATQS) in conjunction with the Arts and Crafts Fair will be held at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center Aug. 28-30. The goal of the Appalachian Treasures Quilt Show is to showcase the traditional art of quilting and provide educational programs dealing with all aspects of the traditional art of quilting. This year’s show theme category will feature appliquéd quilts that are constructed by hand or machine. At various times throughout the three day event, quilters will demonstrate various techniques of appliqué that they like and have mastered. The color to be featured this year is turquoise. All quilts with turquoise fabric in them will be considered for this award based upon use of the color, design and construction techniques. Each year quilters are encouraged to submit a “story” about each quilted item entered in the quilt show. The quilts were made for needy infants. Anyone interested in helping with this community project, may contribute a quilt(s). The Quilters County Store will have three vendors. Members welcome back Quilts and More, English Cottage and Itchin’ 2 Be Stitchin’. Stop by to see the latest quilting items, fabric and patterns. Find out who won the Best of Show, Judge’s Choice, Theme Category and Color awards. Make sure to vote for your favorite quilt so some lucky person will win the People’s Choice award. Music, food and ghost tour among events at Taste of Beckley As one of several events planned for the Appalachian Festival, Taste of Beckley will be featured on Saturday, Aug. 29 from 6 to 9 p.m. in uptown Beckley. The festive block party will offer a variety of food, entertainment and fun for all. Entertainment will feature the Chris Oxley Quartet at 6 p.m. near Main and Heber Streets. 2 Johns will perform on Neville Street at 6:30 p.m. and Piney Creek Canyon Band will take the stage near the intersection of Fayette and Main Streets at 7 p.m. Southern Communications will have an Oreo stacking contest on Main Street around 6:45 p.m. Faith Community Church will offer activities for children to enjoy. Restaurants, organizations and event vendors will set up booths along Main, Heber and Neville Streets selling their specialties to the community. Vendors sell items on their own, so tickets are not required. From restaurant specialties to fair food favorites, a variety of cuisine will be available. A panel of celebrity judges and the public will vote for their favorites. If judged as the best in any of the categories, the entry will receive a certificate to display. Celebrity judges will vote for individual categories including best appetizer, entree’, sandwich, dessert and most attractive booth. The public can vote for the Peoples’ Choice Booth. The ballot box will be located at event headquarters’ booth near the courthouse steps. Other Appalachian Festival activities held uptown include the Aug. 28 Friday in the Park held at Word Park on Neville Street. Events planned at Exhibition Coal Mine and Youth Museum Festival activities are planned at the Exhibition Coal Mine and Youth Museum during the Appalachian Arts an Crafts Fair. The Exhibition Coal Mine is the largest and most popular coal heritage destination in the region. The focal point of the complex is the Rahall General Store featuring a visitor center, gift shop and Fudgery. An extensive collection of mining artifacts, photographs and mining memorabilia can be found on the second floor of the General Store. The main attraction is the underground tour that journeys through the dark passage of a vintage family coal mine. Visitors board an authentic “mantrip car” that travels 1,500 feet beneath the hillside. Throughout the tour, veteran coal miners provide information on the mine, mining history, and the various pieces of equipment on display. ••• The Youth Museum offers a rewarding and educational experience for people of all ages and interests. Kids can just drop in with their Grandview tours Join a Ranger on the Rock at Grandview National Park at the Main Overlook on Aug. 28, 29 and 30 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Experience the superb views from the rim at Grandview and the resources of the New River Gorge. A ranger will have binoculars, maps and brochures to share with those who stop by the Main Overlook for an evening visit and view. This ranger-led activity provides an opportunity to learn more about the natural world that surrounds us and about the people who have shaped our past Appalachia. parents and Make-N-Take a traditional craft. Also, featured at the Youth Museum (which opens Aug. 24) is an “I Feel” exhibit. It is based on The Way I Feel Book Series written by Cornelia Maude Spelman. This exhibit fulfills an important need in the community by helping young children recognize and cope with their feelings, and by helping parents and caregivers better understand the inner emotional life of children. By initiating parent-child dialogue about feelings, this exhibit helps parents and children develop a vocabulary to identify, describe, understand and manage their emotions. Professional educators can use this exhibit to generate discussion to facilitate this learning. Visitors may also tour the restored Coal Camp featuring the Helen School, the Superintendent’s House, the Miner’s Shanty, the Miner’s House and the Pemberton Church. The Appalachian Heritage Exhibit will be on display for visitors to enjoy at Crossroads Mall on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 28 and 29 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sunday, Aug. 30, from noon to 6 p.m. ••• Walk through time with photos by George Bragg. The exhibit includes historical photos along with modern day Appalachia images. Take a leisurely stroll and check out more than 100 classic autos from yesterday and today at the Shade Tree Car Club’s car show at Crossroads Mall on Sunday, Aug. 30, from noon to 6 p.m. This show is open to all classes of cars, motorcycles and trucks. Registration starts at 10 a.m. Trophies will be awarded. All profits to Hospice of SWV and the Jackie Withrow Hospital. Wildwood House tours Built in 1835, Wildwood House Museum is the home of Beckley’s founder, General Alfred Beckley. Wildwood was the home of Beckley and his family until the 1901 death of his second wife. The home was restored by Beckley ancestors and re-opened as a museum in 1987. It has been operated by the City of Beckley since 1993. The Wildwood Advisory Council, along with the Raleigh County Historical Society, conducts tours of the museum. If you wish to tour Wildwood House during the Appalachian Festival, the cost is $3.
