Hearty Congratulations go to Wendy Hudson and her dedicated team! The
many helpers and supporters together with a very large number of locals and
visitors came together on Saturday 22nd August for the opening of the great
new courts for the Club. A fun day was had by all with many activities available for both adults and children to join in and displays of the next stage depicting the new clubhouse.. Of course, two of the most important visitors

The Kendall National Violin Competition has announced the
young violinist and composer Jonathan Mui as the recipient
of the Competition’s Watermark Composition Prize gifted to
the competition by the Watermark Literary Society. The Prize
of $ 2000 was contested by composers from around Australia
who submitted a composition for either Violin Solo or Violin
and Piano to be performed by all finalists of the Kendall National Violin Competition on September 12 in Kendall. Entries
must have been specifically written for the competition and
the compositions would not have been performed in public.

Don't think we've forgotten you William
For that fact is simply not true
Our lives may go on as usual
but often we're thinking of you
You may not have lived in our area,
But now you are known in these parts
Your name is forever soft spoken
And your image is deep in our hearts.
Following a process of blind review renowned Australian
composers Paul Stanhope, Georges Lentz and violinist and
contemporary music expert Ole Bohn reached an independent and unanimous decision to award the composition prize
to Jonathan Mui. The judges praised Mui’s winning entry for
its idiomatic nature, its fine structure and stylistic creativity.
Goetz Richter, Artistic Director of the Kendall National Violin
Competition said: “We were thrilled that the judges’ decision
was so clear and convincing – Jonathan Mui’s Watermark
composition is a great artistic achievement and it emphasizes
the competition’s attention to Australian music and Australian
composers. We have always insisted that young Australian
performers must also play the new music of their country.”Mui’s Rhapsody No 2 will feature in the final round of this
year’s Kendall National Violin Competition. For Jonathan Mui
this will be a return to Kendall after winning the Kendall National Violin Competition himself in 2007 as a violinist. Mui
comments: “I still recall clearly my experience in the Kendall
Violin Competition. It represented an important milestone in
my development as a violinist. In particular, I remember vividly the series of recitals I presented as the KNVC winner- the
opportunity to present myself as an artist, to share my musicmaking with the public. What a wonderful surprise it is then,
for my composition to be selected as the winning entry for the
KNVC's compulsory Australian piece this year. I am looking
forward to hearing my piece performed by some of Australia's
brightest young violinists.”
The Watermark Composition Award was made possible
through a generous donation from the Watermark Literary
Society and honours the work of the founders of the Watermark Literary Muster Elaine van Kempen and the late Australian writer Eric Rolls. Jonathan Mui’s Rhapsody No. 2 will be
performed on September 12 by all four finalists of the Kendall

chairs on Friday 7th August, when Elly Franchimont and her
fabulous singing group ‘Wednesday’ performed.

the piano. He lives in Lake Cathie
and regularly plays his beautiful
piano music at the Glasshouse

he is very much looking forward
to playing for us at Kendall. ‘I
believe Kevin is working on a little surprise for us, too!’ says Alison.

The CHUMS Story
The following month, on Friday 2 October, we have the
pleasure of a lovely Ukulele Group ‘CHUMS’ as main guest
artists.
As always, you are very welcome to bring your instrument
along and share a couple of songs or just come and listen
to all the wonderful music.

each other, went to
learn ukulele with
Ken Yates at Camden Haven Adult
Education.
We
loved playing so
much and realised
then if we didn’t practice all we had learned would be forgotten! So, with encouragement from Ken, on 5th July 2012
CHUMS (Camden Haven Ukulele Musicians) was born. We
continued to play at each other's house and finally, by word
of mouth, our group began to grow.
Now CHUMS are at Laurieton United Services Club (LUSC)

Passing of the Guard at The Kew Corner
Store
The Kew Corner Store has been a long standing icon of the area used by locals and travellers
alike. Many people knew the previous owners Paul
and Sue Macindoe well. It was therefore a sad occasion when Paul Macindoe passed away last month.
There was a very large gathering of family and the
wider community who came together to pay their
respects and celebrate his life. We all send a heartfelt sympathy to Sue and the family at this time.
————————————————The new owners of the Kew Corner Store
owners Staffan and Bronwyn have spent many tireless hours placing developing their vision of the future. Their ethos appears to be sourcing as much of
their produce as locally as possible. Keeping it local,
is important to ensure that we keep as much of our
money in the community as we can. For example
they stock some incredibly tasty hand smoked freerange bacon, ham and chorizos from Tanglewood
farm in Comboyne. Cheese and Yoghurts from
Comboyne. Rose’s cakes from Lorne valley. Fruit
and vegetables direct from Kenny Little who also
aims to keep it local where possible. Recently the
store stocked some Kendall Kiwi, fruit that was so
sweet with almost a sherbert twist. The joy of the
produce section is you never quite know what delights you might find.
Staffan and Bronwyn have great future plans
for the store including extending out the back so
that you can have your takeaway overlooking the
beautiful golf course. They also plan to develop
wheelchair and pram access by summer. In the
meantime they have put considerable money back
into the community by employing over 12 people.
If you haven't been in the store yet go check it
out. It certainly has something for everyone with
cosy seating and even a giftware section for those
last minute gifts. They are up early feeding hearty
breakfast takeaways for the early workers with
some solid hot food.
The most enjoyable thing about stepping into
the Kew store is the vibe. Staffan, Bronwyn and the
crew all seem to be quick with a smile and eager to
meet your needs. We wish them well on them well
on the start of their venture.

Escapades, Friday 1st May, volume 12 issue 5.
Hi my name is Bob.
I'm one hell of a dog.
Apologies for any distress I've caused.
You see I'm a travelling hound,
Got my nose to the ground
I don't mean to break no laws
I sing the blues
while doing twos
on your neighbour's front lawn.
It's been 15 long years now
It's a thing I can't shake
like R.E.O Speed Wagon once said
"it's a hard habit to break."
Now my past has caught up with me.
As my owners gavel fell,
their jury found me guilty
gave me sixteen years in hell.
But I'm gunna make a kennel break,
and I'm looking toward your lawn.

there's nothing like a dog scorned.
And thanks to the good folk of Kendall
Those who kept me safe from harm.

On the 14th Sept Kendall Kettles Craft
Group have arranged for the mobile scissor
sharpening man to visit us from 9am until he is
finished. Bring along any scissors, (Including
pinking shears), knives, garden shears, secateurs,
etc that need sharpening. He charges around
$5.00 per item. If you could tag your items (either
with a piece of coloured ribbon or masking tape
with name written on it) beforehand it would be
very helpful).
Any community members that would like their
items sharpened they are more than welcome to
bring them along also- he will be parked in the car
park or in the driveway near the auditorium.

The half price sale that ran for the last two weeks of
August was a huge success. Now we have the room to
fill the shop again with new stock. There is a variety
of men‘s suits for all sizes and occasions. As always
the children‘s clothing and ladies wear racks have a
great variety to choose from. Books, toys, games,
DVD‘s and CD‘s have all been restocked. Shoes,
handbags and carry bags shelves are topped up. So
now is a really good time to come to the shop.
The Kendall Op-Shop was honoured to host the annual Women in Service luncheon at the Kendall Services and Citizens Club on Wednesday 12th August.
Eighty ladies from 17 Services Clubs in the Port Macquarie and Camden Haven region attended. A spokesperson from each club presented a two minute talk
about their organisation. One outstanding theme that
came from every group was the satisfaction that the
ladies gained through their volunteer work and the
friendships that flourished in their organisation.
The Bells of Haven provided entertainment while the
ladies were being seated and Adam played background music as the luncheon was served. The food
was excellent and the view just perfect, as always.
June Le Pla OAM our guest speaker, spoke of the
service provided by Fawna – For Australian Wildlife
Needing Aid. That includes the rescue, rehabilitation
and release of birdlife and wildlife in our area.

Happy Fathers Day Dads. Remember if you have run out
of time for that gift for Dad there are hand knitted Beanies
in footy colours, books, clocks with roman numerals, pens
and coffee tables made by ―The men‘s shed‖ Paintings and,
if Dad has a sweet tooth, Honey, Nuts and those famous
Riccardo‘s Pickles, we also have hand-made gift cards.
Volunteers with the ―Driver Reviver‖ will be swinging into
action with School Holidays soon approaching in September. With the warmer weather coming, the Volunteers are
expecting a large amount of travellers to call for a rest and
refreshments, the amount of people calling each holiday
time is growing.
This month at the Information Centre we have had people
call in from all over the world including a large amount of
Irish, German and Japanese travellers have called in. The
regular nomad pilgrimage from the south heading to the
warmer climate of the North has grown, seeing many vans
taking advantage of the installation of the Toilet Dump site
for vans and calling into the Information Centre to collect
that map or two.
A meeting was held in August with the Volunteers voicing
their opinion on the Colour and design of the T-shirts about
to be purchased for them displaying our logo ―The Big
Axe‖ , a committee is about to be formed for plans to take
place for the layout of gardens at the Centre, we hope to
make travellers stay as eye catching as possible.
The gallery still has on display and for purchase many
beautiful quilts, the travellers are delighted with the display
and many quilts have been purchased. Many wonderful
paintings by local artists adorn the walls and would be a
talking point to any home when purchased.
Our newest addition to our local range is the wooden pot
stands made so decorative and so sturdy, we have tea
cosy‘s to go with the stands in all pretty colours. We will
be receiving in the near future lovely fridge magnets with
our icon ―The Big Axe‖ on and selling at a very cheap rate.

and is highly delighted
that he chose to be in
the club on that lucky

The combined jackpot
has ten clubs participating and a member must be present in his club to be
eligible to claim the prize. So, after having to go
round all the clubs, Kendall Club was number 6 on
the list and Michael was the very lucky member.

CWA Kendall August Meeting

Spring Fashion Parade Coming to Kendall
Guest speaker for our August meeting was Ian Wall,
hearing support teacher with the Dept of Education. We were astounded to hear that a barrage of
tests done on babies at 6 weeks of age can diagnose
hearing impairment, including to what degree that impairment may be! No longer do children go the first 5
or so years of life hearing impaired before being tested
when they enter school. So many years to develop
strategies for development, have hearing aids or cochlear implants and learn to speak and/or sign. The
support teachers work with the parents and children
right from this young age through their whole education. A wonderful initiative! As part of this a deaf kids
camp is held annually. This gives the kids a fantastic
opportunity to network socially in an atmosphere
where all the children have a hearing impairment and
are therefore on a level social playing field. Ian reports
that at these camps many lifelong friendships are
formed and the children regularly network using email
and texting. Kendall CWA is proud to support the annual camp.
Quota International of Camden Haven is having its annual Fashion show on Saturday the 19th of September
at 2 pm at the Kendall Services and Citizens Club. The
Fashion Show is a major fundraiser for the club.
Quota InternationaI is a non-profit organisation empowering women, children, the deaf, hard of hearing
and speech impaired in local communities and around
the world. Quota provides assistance directly to those
in need.
All are invited to come along to enjoy our Fashion
Show fundraiser to view the new spring fashions from
J & A Fashions which will be modelled by ‘real
women’, with the program hosted by Karen Pini. Afternoon tea comprising hot foods, sandwiches and cakes
will be catered for by Club Chef Craig and the very talented “Blokes Notes” will round out the entertainment! Tickets for this afternoon of entertainment,
supporting a very worthwhile cause, will cost $20.00

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY:
September 10 - CWA Awareness Week, Kendall will
hold an open day from 9am at their rooms next door to
the club. Come along and have a cuppa and chat. CWA
NSW focus this awareness week is domestic violence. To bring attention to this Kendall CWA has
asked Port Macquarie Hastings domestic and family
violence specialist service to joining us for the morning. They will be available from 10-12 to answer any
questions. We will also be promoting organ donation
and asking that you "have that talk" with your family.
September 15 - Birthday picnic at Cowarra dam. Instead of a meeting we are celebrating with a picnic. Meeting at the dam at 10am, bringing a
plate. Visitors, husbands, significant others all welcome! In case of rain we will meet at our rooms. If

Kendall District Gardeners Club July/August Report
The July meeting commenced with a moments silence to commemorate the loss of two of our members - Pru
Stitt and Cassie Bannerman.
This meeting also marked the 11thanniversary of the club. Doug presented an interesting slideshow of various places he
and Di have canoed. Highlighting just how wonderful the Camden Haven River is for paddling and the Kendall Community
Boatshed welcomes any new paddlers. Phone Diann 6559 6740 for more details about the Boatshed.
The August meeting was held on 17th August where John welcomed everyone and thanked Richard and Christine for organising the horticultural speakers day along with all the helpers. A profit was made for the club which helps expenses.
The boardwalk over the camphor laurel roots has commenced and the club has agreed to contribute $1,000 towards the
cost. A cheque will be presented to the Hall Committee at our Christmas Party. September’s speaker will be on soil science and October will cover how plants are judged at horticultural shows. November may be an excursion to the Addictive
Landscape Nursery and we have been invited to the Gardens of Australia trip to Kariong on 26/9/15 cost: $60pp.
The speaker for this month was none other than John Carter on Minerals and Fertilizers . He pointed out that gypsum
(available from the club) was good at breaking down the clay soil, ground limestone reduced soil acidity; slaked lime
(calcium hydroxide) was quicker acting but not controllable. Microfine lime stays in suspension when added to water and
can be applied by watering can. Dolomite and magnesium sulphate is generally not recommended for this area as there is
sufficient magnesium in our soils and too much can cause issues. Dinofertt is composted bird poo. A similar product is
Super Katek available from the club contains trace elements. Multigrow pellets are good for spinach and beans. Blood &
Bone is a good natural fertilizer & potassium sulphate can be added with it. Water in around the drip line. Aquasol & Seasol improve the soil. Check ingredients in Fertilizers: Nitrogen (N) promoted leaf growth, Potassium (K) promotes flowering and Phosphorus (P) kills most native plants. You can use cow , horse, sheep ,poultry manure plus garden compost.
Next meeting will be held on 21 September, 2015.

Report on Horticultural Speakers Day

What a fantastic day this was with four eloquent speakers covering a range of topics and
hosted by John Carter the president of the Kendall District Gardener’s Club.
Up first was Kath Gadd who is a horticulturalist specialising in native garden design. She
spoke about the various garden styles and pointed out that a garden is a process and not a
product. The plant format and texture takes priority over colour. To determine what plants
to use observe plants in their natural habitat and what grows in the area. The styles cover
small, natural, formal, and wildlife. Small gardens can use dwarf species and groundcover
natives incorporating one or two tall elements. Naturalistic or bush gardens tend to use

local indigenous plants. Formal gardens may have clipped shrubs. Wildlife gardens may
have a dense understory with leaf litter, or may be heath land, open grassy woodland. Nesting sites and access to water is provided. Trees with hollows and connecting canopies help wildlife. When planning a garden develop a
wish list and obtain pictures of plants you like. Structure is important, providing focal points, scale, symmetry/asymmetry, masses/
voids and repetition are tools used to enhance gardens. Art and sculpture personalise a garden. For more on garden design see

After a generous morning tea the next presenter was Kim Gollan from Dingo Creek Rainforest Nursery. Kim initially started to grow rainforest plants to reafforest her own property and developed a
nursery. Mid north coast was originally a flood plain rainforest. Once the timber went and in came the
dairy farmers there was no thought to plant conservation. Fortunately, some plant seeds were collected and are now goring in Melbourne’s Botanical Garden’s magnificent arboretum. There are three
pockets of floodplain rainforest left in this area – Wingham Brush, Coocumbac Island Nature Reserve
in the Manning River, and the Landsdowne Reserve. There are different species in all three as well as
some common ones. Some examples of floodplain rain forest plants include the plum pine which is a
native conifer with edible fruit, Pepperbush and Bolwarra. Environmental weeds particularly vines are
detrimental to our rainforests. Floodplain plants can be grown anywhere.

After lunch Angela Millet talked about fungi. Angela developed her interest in fungi and photographing fungi through Landcare. The fungi kingdom has DNA more closely relates to animals. It has no leaves roots or chlorophyll. What we see above the ground is the fruit of the
fungi. It breaks down organic matter and can have parasitic or symbiotic relationships. It
needs a critical mass of nutrients, moisture and oxygen which is absorbed through the mycelium. There is a large variety of fungi and stages of the same fungi can look quite different. It
is important to see the lifecycle of fungi to help classify them. The largest living organism on
earth is said to be a fungus covering 2500
acres.

The final speaker was Frith Peters who
was ABC gardener of the year in 2010.
Frith showed us slides of the development
of her garden during an extended drought period and through sandstorms and grasshopper plagues. Frith’s story is well documented on the ABC website. She is now
developing new garden at Comboyne. It will be quite a different story with different
sorts of challenges.
